Dr. Maleeha Lodhi is Former Pakistan's Ambassador to the US, UK & UN. Dr. Maleeha Lodhi is among the most accomplished Pakistani diplomats with extensive experience in diplomacy, media, and teaching. She has served as Pakistan's envoy to the Court of St. James' and twice as its ambassador to the United States.
Dr. Maleeha Lodhi has been editor of two of Pakistan’s leading daily newspapers, The News and The Muslim. She served on the UN Secretary General’s advisory board on disarmament, taught at the London School of Economics and has been a fellow at Harvard University and at Washington’s Woodrow Wilson Center. She has been named by the Time Magazine as one of a hundred people in the world who will help shape the 21st century, and is a recipient of the Hilal-i-Imtiaz for her public service. She has PhD in Political Science from the London School of Economics.

The problem with people like Maleeha Lodhi etc is simple. They have been part of the establishment and therefore are responsible in part for Pakistan's present predicament. It's difficult to admit that they were wrong all their life. So all they do is mouth platitudes and cover up their mistakes. The solution they propose is to do more of the same, packaged differently. Brings to mind the saying of one definition of madness - to do the same thing repeatedly and expect different results.
Pakistan cannot have normal relations with India on the basis of Goli & Gaali. The ambassador needs to get real. Pakistani politician and the army expect other countries to change their policies to suit Pakistan. It is not about win win. He thoughts are utopian.
Pakistan has still not learnt their lessons. Their ruling elites still call Indian regime hostile when the World has recognised it to be peaceful country which believes in good of all humanity. Nothing can be done about a state which is bent upon self destruction. I really pity the people of Pakistan who have been fed with hatred towards India all these years so that these so called elites remain in power and loot Pakistan and this is despite the fact that several years or centuries back their ancestors were all perhaps followers of sanatam dharma.

Dr Lodhi's term in the UN was so horrendous and likely caused more harm to Pakistan's account second to Kargil. She was thrown out from the UN and Pak Armed force is so frustrated from her unprofessionalism that she isn't landing any position in current government. Good luck Maleeha and work on your english and you might get some cash composing articles for Dawn. Indian government should rethink their plan for lateral entry into civil services.

To be honest, that drive is an integral part of Islam. Now, some countries like the UAE, or Saudi Arabia now, might actively reject that part of Islam, but that is an exception and not the rule. And one wonders how stable that situation is.

It is a big task to bring normalcy and finding right path to fallow . Basic thing is to change government policy on law and order and keep better relations with the neighboring countries .
Pakistani definition of Problem analysis :
a) Never go near to the truth
b) Never even talk about the root cause
c) Deceive self and try to deceive the whole world.
d) Throw in few buzz words and few catch phrases to sound professional and knowledgeable.
e) Not even acknowledge the fundamentals of a problem.
f) Some how rationalise every wrong policy and wrong methodology and recommend more of the same and the new solution.
A year 10 student in India could do a better problem analysis and problem solving then a seasoned diplomat of this pure land.

India has “Restrictive trade policy” (ignore the MFN status given to Pak by India). India is the hostile border (ignore so many terrorist attacks / cross border infiltration that happens only one sided, the direction of which we know). Did not expect anything better from the lady who was flashing false pictures in UN claiming them to Kashmiri pallet gun victims..
She is trying to send message to their establishment talking like this..to give her a role in the near future when martial law would be introduced in 1-2 months.
Saudi wants to rent Pakistan for their own food security. Also they want to push/outsource their environment degrading fossil fuels industries to Pakistan but ensure to extract the benefits from it. It will also tieback Pak to Saudi oil and permanently and perpetually get struck with high-priced oil delinking from market oriented pricing. Of course Saudis will be a lot more fairer than Chinese..they don't play dirty unlike China.
The very SIFC is a short sighted approach. It's going to directly pit the resource rich regions in direct conflict with establishment unless a radical approach of inclusion and sharing of prosperity is adopted. But always your establishment cannot see beyond Punjab and a few key cities..
Unless you improve your infrastructure in terms of Railway, public transport etc you are not going to be able to bring some pride and appreciation from public about sincerety of the initiatives.

Uzair is by far the most balanced, credible and objective anchors of Pakistan. He would make a great ambassador to India given his Gujarat connections.

Ms Lodhi was one of the early invitees to GHQ at the dawn of Musharraf's coup. An accomplished woman albeit with a suspect diplomatic pedigree, her stellar profile has not prevented her from persisting with non-committal responses to important questions on her own social media accounts and op-eds. This begs the question "is she still hopeful of yet another job as a reward for being politically correct?" An honourable thing would be to start speaking her mind without acting like one of Pavlov's salivating creatures anticipating a meagre reward. An interesting question for the next episode will be "What does she think of Hussain Haqqani?"
P.S. I will vote for Maleeha Lodhi if she takes the moral high ground and sides with whatever/whoever she thinks is right.

Why should India want normal relation with Pakistan?
Because normal means continution of terrorism, still hegemony of China in Pakistan and creation of nuisance in every international platform.

There can be tactical arrangement between the two which benefits both. But on a broader sense I believe Indians have finally realised that Pakistan is a permanent hostile state (Pakistan will collapse without hostility towards India) so engage with the world keeping that in mind.

For someone with Ms. Lodhi's experience, intellect, and ring-side seat at any gathering of Pakistani (or even global!) elites, it is surprising that she played the diplomat. It's not that she is not insincere or that she lacks depth, Why then does not dig deep?! Why has she just talked at operational level and that which is obvious. Hearing her was like going through a news conf in which an envoy babbles for the optics of it. I'm sure she won't read this, but I fell for Uzair. (As someone said, he must have tried hard not to tear his hair... well, the brother has).
While wading through the same old same old talking points of what ails Pakistan. The same superficialities, the same verbiage, the same thing about governance or the lack of continuity of it, the mentions of sleights from the east, the rubble on the west... Has she addressed stuff that is structural, that which is organic? She mentioned state a lot but hasn't addressed the fundamental problems, philosophical foundations, and that the elites have not settled on a cohesive, comprehensive position around which to rally the whole nation or even build a nation around. She has not even mentioned how fractured, even nascent, the very idea and formation is - how has the idea of Pakistan been cultivated, grown... before it can cherished?! It is dead on arrival and rotting now but she has no sight of it. What about the organic foundation of a perverse state run by the venn of interests amongst the army, judiciary, and maulvis. I was listening to a young man on a Lahore street (in UA-cam) who articulated this with such depth of insight and precision that I was astounded. Why couldn't Hon Lodhi articulate it?! She talks of all the dynamic (a word she dropped a lot) people - youth, innovators, entrepreneurs - but she does not address the education system - not just institutional or resource problems but the very organic foundation of it.
In her mention of India, she talked of India's aggression and Modi's aggression and India's unwillingness to talk, her illegal annexation of Kashmir. Is that the truth? Even if she were talking about the present? Right when she was at the helm, things happened that should not and could not have been India's doing. She was already in the power and influence circuit when the TTP and the Taliban and the Mujahideen targeted Afghanistan and also India at another time. Nary a thought of that! Surely, she knows India's position (right or wrong, honest or duplicitous) on why they don't want to talk with Pakistan or them asking, "WHO do we talk with?". But she avoids that because she perhaps assumes that the audience will readily accept the India bogeyman. (I doubt it because, imo, the audience of young, exposed, thinking Pakistanis that are Uzair's audience can catch this in a whiff). Why such disingenuous dribble then?
Personally, I suspect it's because the older Pakistani elites particularly those that have skin in the game cannot come clean in public. There are several Pakistani intellectuals with the depth and integrity but they are neither popular nor have the megaphone. (It's sad to see the Hoodbhoys, Muzammil Shahs... being discounted and even hounded). Or perhaps they don't have the sophistication or nous of Ms. Lodhi. (I'm not for a second saying Uzair is purposely not bringing them in. He is indeed!). There are some elites that are plain duplicitous and misdirected. Some are just cognizant but just liars; they also lie to themselves! And this is the malaise of Pakistan - the lying to oneself. When they are able to get over this, it will be a different country with all its potential unlocked. And the hyper-religiosity will be killed and the grip of the myopic maulvis and self-serving army will be eased.
All that said, thanks to Uzair for bringing Ms. Lodhi on. We need to hear opinions from all directions and sections. I personally am open to some army and maulvi hefts coming to explain their positions. Hold them to it! And I believe that Uzair can do a wonderful job. He has a quiet but articulate presence and he is respectful as probing. He's able to extract thoughts from his guests and let's them talk. I hope this does not come off as flattery, it is not! When I listen to him, I'm reminded of another great interviewer I listen to often on NPR in the USA - Terri Gross. Keep on, Uzair, and thank you! [Please pardon this long and unedited ramble].

Although in my opinion her undertone of animosity towards India is a bit unfounded, I hold Dr. Lodhi’s narratives in high regard. And Uzair being one of my favorite economic analysts from the subcontinent, this was really an insightful discourse.
