Trekking into the backcountry on snowshoe, I headed out for 4 Days with my family. Heavy wind and bad weather was something we had to deal with on this trip, particularly on the walk out. We hauled a large canvas tent and woodstove, in addition to all the food and survival gear we’d need to be comfortable and safe on our adventure. Our route took us along frozen lakes and through the bush on the connecting portage trails. My wife Tori carried our 18-month-old son Wesley on her back the whole way. After setting up camp, we trekked deeper into the backcountry by snowshoe to explore more of the area.

Awe cutey pie Wesley enjoying his first winter camping trip, cosy in his sleeping bag napping. Wonderful orange safety orange colour jacket. I wouldn't worry about what others say as I know you don't, but are respectful enough to speak to the minority that worry. I guess they never think about how the Eskimo's, Indianas, and our own relatives from several centuries before us. How our own families travelled in heat and in cold, on foot, boat, ship, train and very hungry with little or no money living off the land protecting their babies as they go.

When I was a toddler back in the sixties, my dad would put me in an old army rucksack, pull the draw strings up around my neck so I couldn't wriggle free, and off we would go hiking in the mountains of the UK. We had an old converted ambulance and I would sleep on one of the stretchers that was still inside up top. Best days you will ever have, camping with mum and dad. Go Bairds, YEAHHHHHH!!

I have some friends in the community with children with a variety of sever to mild special needs the camp to boat even jet ski and have traveled thousands of miles even over seas. Yes it's a little extra work or planning they say but they team work is the dream work. Several have a health care nanny and she backs her bags travels along. Wesley is a beautiful precious soul that radiates brightly with your loving care.

Thanks a lot for that! Ya, Tori was reflecting in part of a few angry comments we’ve had in the past regarding camping with our son. Definitely though, it’s your thoughts that reflect the majority. Many of us nature outdoor lovers had experiences in the forest as children that played a large role in shaping us for the better.

I've never winter camped but every summer my mom had all 7 of her kids living in a 12 x 12 foot tent with a screened in porch attached. We got pretty good at packing up and moving from campground to campground. I think all big families tend to know which chores are theirs and just get it done. I think mom liked having a closer eye on us in this way and that we could just simply move to another place if any one of us was exposed to bad influences. Loved this family outing. LOL.

@@JimBairdAdventurer I agree! People would be much better off if they mind their own business! I trapped and hunted and fished Northern and mid Michigan my entire life starting at age 8 until I retired from law enforcement and sold my produce farm got a divorce and moved back to North Carolina where I was born then moved here to northern Arizona where the Elk are abundant and lots of trout in the lakes and streams here! I feel I’ve lived a rich life done a lot of things and loved it all! You Jim Baird are a rich man! Meaning you have a lovely family, I mean geez your wife cooks Elk and mushrooms and onions in butter LOL but not only that you have many skills of the outdoors! You are a true Bushman! Many do not have those skills! Not many of us around anymore! I miss fly in fishing in Canada we did it every summer for walleye! Michigan deer season and ice fishing! I miss it bro! Nothing wrong with taking the kid out, just as you said, be prepared, and don't be too far from help. Things can go sour for little ones a lot faster than with us. Best place for childhood development is in a natural setting, especially when he's more mobile.

Jim Baird what I appreciate about your final comments is what it means to love bushcraft. Every trip is a learning experience.
I believe I take away something new every time I am in the field.
Even on solo winter bushcraft trips you are pushing it to the limit regarding exhaustion.
Doing this trip with the family is impressive. Your wife is awesome with her positive attitude and physical endurance.
      You guys rock.
      Keep er going .

I for one, think it's awesome that you bring Wesley on your trips. I took my son fishing when he was 4 mos. Old. Guess what his favorite activity is today at 17?!! Yup, fishing. You're giving him a great start to a love for the outdoors. Looks like a beautiful place to camp. I love Jim's informative chats about the trees and history of the land. Thanks for sharing even when some can be harsh with your way of life with your son. He's totally fine and you're very attentive parents.

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  4 роки тому

Thanks very much and I’m glad to hear you enjoy the tidbits about the trees and stuff like that. We haven’t gotten many comments recently about taking our son camping but we’ve had a few pretty ‘interesting’ ones in the past. It’s reasons like that that come people say you shouldn’t even read the comments because they could sway how you do things and that could ultimately generate less authentic and worse content.

My son Alex went on his first camping trip when he was 7 weeks old. He did stay in my parents camper at night because my tent wasn’t a “hot tent”.
He Also went on a 40 mile/6 day hike when he was almost 2. Carried him on my back in a Kelty kid-carrier pack through it all. Pretty awesome memories!

Such an inspiring family. We all can learn so much from being outdoors. Most of my best memories as a child are from when we were camping. Tori is definitely a badass walking in snowshoes and carrying Wesley. Such beautiful scenery you’s showed us and great cooking. This was such an enjoyable video to watch and I think Wesley is getting the best care and love. Keep doing what your doing.🥰

What a great adventure! We are fortunate to live in Northern BC and while watching we were reminiscing about a camping trip we took with our twin boys years ago to the Yukon. We did a lot of hiking and their mum was always doing much “hey bear!”. The boys were always getting upset with her because “You’re scaring the animals away”. :) They were 4 years old, it’s an experience that they have vivid memories of today. Great vid, thanks for sharing and cheers!

Tmi bet that was a great and memorable trip for sure. From my observations, it’s amazing how little it can take to positively influence a child. I’ve been to Dease Lake and Telegraph Creek and canoed the upper and lower Stikine in 2007. Amazing country. I didn’t a big Yukon trip last year too which I have a video series up here on. So, I love these areas that you are lucky to call home!

Love the video! Wesley is so cute and it is great to see that you are taking him on some of your camping trips. I think that will prove to be very valuable for him later on. Love to see Tori she is such a natural out there in the woods. I hope to be half as good as her some day. She is aspiring . I miss Buck. I was thinking of him as you were pulling the toboggan sleds. Hopefully someday you can get another great dog. Thanks for the videos! Looking forward to another one.
