Portaging and soloing whitewater paddling up to class three was the plan for my short adventure this day. First, I go through some of my wilderness outfitting gear including my spraydeck, whitewater canoe, drybag and drysuit before heading out on my Magnetawan River canoe trip. My plan was to head downriver to a bridge where my wife would pick me up. The route would include two portages, a couple class 1 and a couple class 2 rapids as well as one big class three rapid. As soon as I ran the first rapid it felt awesome to be on the river. It was hot out for this time of year and after a portage around a big canyon and unrunnable rapid, I soon ran out of drinking water. Fortunately, it wasn't long until I found a natural spring with delicious and cold water. After dealing with the raging whitewater of a big drop, I paddled through a calm section and had a weird feeling like something was staring at me. I turned around to see a small, brand new log cabin built on top of a hill. It kind of struck me as odd that this would have given me the urge to turn around and look behind me. Before too long my trip was over and I met Tori at the bridge and I was home by dinner time. I felt tired but rejuvenated after the little outing, but more so I felt fortunate to live in the place that I do.

Thanks a lot for watching! Please like this video and subscribe to my channel for more! Next vid up - a documentary of a 14-day adventure in the Canadian North with my Wife Tori and the late, great dog Buck. That’ll be out Friday. Thanks again for all the support and have a great week.
Jim Baird - Adventurer -Hey Jim it was great to see you a canoe again! I’m a novice paddler to say the least but I have learned more about canoeing just watching your videos than I can really even tell you. Paddle strokes reading rapids, all of it!
Have you used that Werner Churchill paddle I saw you get in a past video yet? Or am I wrong about that? I have one and it’s unbelievable how I can maneuver my 11’9” canoe with in just class 1 rapids. I also have the same flat water paddle as well. Thanks for teaching me so much! I’ll be looking forward to more instruction & learning.
Can’t wait!
🌖🚣🏻💨💨🦟💨💨🤙🏽
Swift needs to send you a lighter canoe. And me one too. Lol.
No problem! I have a Werner Churchill too. Most don’t really recommend using an offset, or bent shaft paddle for rapids but I think it’s fine in class ones and every twos. It’s not a overly pronounced offset in the churchill. I used it to run several long rapids last spring on my Algonquin Trout fishing trip. I’d go with a more whitewater specific paddle to step it up with rapids and also, a longer shaft for your whitewater paddle is best, especially when you’re carrying gear in your boat.
I’ve covered a lot of water in a canoe (mostly BWCAW), and always appreciate watching your trips. Gets me out there when I’m stuck in reality!
Jim,,,Bucky was so laid back and so chilling his vibe,,,he can sleep eat and play alday loong now,,an sleep sum more
If he wants 🔥💙
Always enjoy watching your runs. Great to learn from you and especially enjoy when you break down your plan for tackling a rapid. That one in particular was really nasty looking. Great stills from it too!
Thanks a lot, ya it was a fun run. That intervalometer setting is a great one for stuff like this but you can’t program it to take pics faster than every 1 second or I’d have gotten better ones.
Thank you Jim and your brother. I work in a cubicle in front of a computer everyday. Watching you guys out there in the wild helps me going. Makes me feel I’m there and it gets me through the day. Take care and keep them videos coming :)
Awesome run Jim! You make it look easier than it actually is! Thanks brother! 🇨🇦
Great video Jim, Catherine says hi to you and Tori.
Just found you a few weeks ago and really enjoy your work. Your wilderness assessment skills are so spot on they lead me to make two comments. 1) I would trust you with my life in the wild, and 2) there's no way in blazes I'd get in that canoe with you! LOL, Thanks!
Haha, well I’d say many would agree that you’re wise man. Thanks a lot!
Take it out, put it in, take it out, put it in... that is dedication.
I have to recon it... i follow several canoer's channels, but you are probably the best rapids runner amongst them
Thanks a lot, ya I definitely enjoy it and have been paddling whitewater for some time.
You must be the Canadian version of me! I live on the Hiwassee river and often carry my canoe down to the river, and I also see pileated woodpeckers (my favorite bird) and bald eagles (second favorite bird) on my journeys. I can just sit on the back deck and see the eagles flying over the river
bahahaha all of a sudden im watching the rhino ace ventura clip, jesus your a comedic genius and outdoors man
Haha, thanks a lot and gosd yiu got a kick outta that one.
Lovely little guy you both have! So cute!
Thanks!
😎 wonderful story and imagery, great to see a close up local adventure, greetings Jim from Australia
I've been a kayaker for the past 10+ years but you really persuade me want to make the transition to canoe! I love the videos!
Gorgeous river, thanks for bringing us along!
Good to get out and shake the cobwebs off lol! That was quite the roller coaster. Doing the river in sections sounds like a fun idea. Cheers
Thank you for the great ride along. Camping was my favorite pastime. Stroke keep s my one arm not really working right ft paddling.
JIM I HOPE YOU REALISE HOW FORTUNATE YOU ARE TO HAVE THAT RIVER ON YOUR DOORSTEP,LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF THE VIDS SO FAR,MORE OF THE SAME PLZ
For sure! It was hard for me this spring with the covid-related camping bans in Ontario but I still managed to get on the water. More to come and thanks a lot. I am truly lucky for this and living hear was a goal we worked towards for some time. It’s a pretty remote location though we do have road access. It took some adjusting as we moved here with our new born and it’s a ways from family but we are just loving it! It can be scary for some to pick up and make a move like this even if they want to do it so, I’m very glad we did.
Man I don't know how your only at under 30,000 subs makes no sense love the content!
SniperWOODS awesome to hear, thanks!! Gotta keep at it I guess. YT can be a cruel mistress I suppose.
I keep saying this!
Agreed. The Baffin Island / Yukon Wild series are amazing!
I totally agree!!! The quality of this channel is utterly underrated. It is unbelievable how genuine and authentic all the content is being filmed. He shows spectacular stuff and great accomplishment with no arrogant attitude whatsoever - just a straight shooter... 👏🏻👍
Might want to actually *ask* people to subscribe. Agree on the quality. Enjoyed the Yukon Wild series.
Great video, great family! 👍👍👍💯💯💯
🙂 much appreciated
You Sure Know How To Work That Big Canoe . Was Fun For This Old Boy ! Thank You Jim :)
Roger Colette you’re welcome! Ya, it’s a tandem canoe but it does have a great rocker so it’s still maneuverable for solo paddling. Tough to get it straightened back out if you start to veer sideways though.
One of the things I like about Jimmy is his sensibility.
Thanks
What a place to live! 😮
Thanks a lot!
Whoa!! Great ride Jim! You're a lucky guy to have that in your back yard.
Thanks a lot and yes, I truly feel that I am
@@JimBairdAdventurer I lived In Dorset, Ontario for over 10 years, so I had lots of play areas all around me. Now that I'm near Saskatoon it's a 5 hour trip up to the Churchill River for playing.
Under three to La Ronge though but ya it’s a haul. Churchill has some awesome spots though. Have not paddled to get but drove over it on my way to Stony for the Porcupine. I’m actually posting a vid on that trip this Friday. I love Northern Saskatchewan.
Nice little day trip. Thanks
You’re welcome!
Big adventures for a big guy!! Love you Jim~
Thanks very much!
Big "TOYS" for big Men. When you carry the canoe through the branches I can feel the scratches all the way in my soul. Great video Jim...🤠
Thanks a lot!
Awesome video Jim. I love your canoeing videos.
Thanks!
Wow, what an awesome backyard!
Thanks! Ya, i love it.
Thanks for the trip Jim love that river
Holy shit what a ride! You got guts Jim! Well done!
Wow, great adventure... and video production.
Thanks!
i just love your videos and i am learning allot just by watching! Keep up the great work!
You are so fortunate to have all of that in your back yard...!
Indeed I am!
Very exciting river run. The Mag has many beautiful faces, the "Mississippi River" of Central Ontario. I believe the Mag starts in Western Algonquin Park and finishes at Britt. The Nottawasaga is a beautiful long river just less intense rapids.
Yes, that’s right. Best river! Also pretty wild
Mom and Wesley to the rescue! Great outing - very pretty area! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
Mate what an awesome spot, right on your doorstep!
Thanks a lot!!
Looks like a ton of fun! And hard work..
A river in your back yard! Now that is living! So awesome. Play safe.😉🇨🇦
Indeed it is for me
Just a great video - stay safe, Jim
Thanks!
Always great to watch you running rapids. Can’t wait for more. Thanks for sharing.
No prob!
Hey Jim, nice video. Clever, bigger canoe and shallower draft. Laugh, you shouldn't wash the waterproof suit so warm, because they get too small very quickly and it pinches everywhere. Oh yeah, looks familiar from my biker quad stuff. Grin, I have two sizes in the cupboard by now. Summer and winter. Every bear goes well-fed into the winter.
Please be careful, you have a wife and baby. Grin, avoid gardening, laugh and have fun. My kind of thing.
Take good care of yourself, Greetings from Frankfurt.
Thanks a lot and this is true
@@JimBairdAdventurer Jim, sure. With 66, of it also 7 years paratroopers and approx. 40 years, in the world professionally on the way, also in crisis areas worked, there an eye sees very much, laugh ( everything ). It was the same for me, with 25 years at 1.72 loose 80 kilos and not a single gram of fat. Oh God, today shorter and at least 10 - 20 kg more.
Take care of yourselves and family, please also greet your brother and wife.
Nice what you are doing in Canada and the nature is indescribably great.
Greeting from Frankfurt
Nice trip great looking home and fantastic location. Then the bonus of a taxi ride home ,your son looked so happy to come out and pick his dad up :)
I PUCKERED FOR ---- FOR YOU ---- BEFORE YOU ENTERED THAT RAPID! Outstanding ride Jim !! Great Great video. Looking forward to your next float.
Thank you for awesomeness.
Thanks!! Ya it was a wild one for sure. You’re welcome and very glad you liked it .
Loved the video Jim. Beautiful scenery, great commentary! Feel like you brought us all along!
Much appreciated!
I believe those eagles are mating .. Not fighting. lol. Spring
Some like it rough I guess 🤷♂️
What a backyard! And what a nice day ride, happy to have met you via youtube.. Greeting from Sweden
That is awesome that you have that river right in your back yard.
I totally agree!
Nice run and capture Jim! Jealous!
Thanks a lot!
Well that was another exciting adventure with beautiful scenery and white water rapids , better still the river is in your backyard , great way to spend some time during Covid. Thanks for sharinging .
You’re very welcome! It was a fun little run that I do at least once or twice every spring.
Hello Jim very nice pictures, I love your videos and the nature you show! My next canoutour will be in the Yukon! Until then I can watch your videos! Greetings from Austria Tom!
Really liked that video. At first I laughed and told my wife that the garden would have to wait on such a beautiful day. That was about the most awesome ride I have ever seen. I have only been out once myself, but it was more mellow. Calm water on the Ottawa River. Thanks for posting that. It really made my day.
No problem, ya it was a blast. It was a beautiful day too for sure. Almost too hot at times really. The weather took a turn for the worst in the coming days and we had snow if you can believe it.
Just beautiful Jim, B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L...!! .You make your own decision's in life, the people we love the places we go, and the attitude by which we live .. You make your own luck.. All power to you and Tori, and the wee man.. ATVB , my friend. Scott Somerset England
love the adventure available at your backyard!!!
Thanks a lot! Ya, we love having access to this river and all the backcountry around here.
I really love this area! This past winter my GPS took me down a Forest road instead of leading me to hwy 60 in Algonquin...it was a hoot going as far as I did..went past Kearney...it can be fun getting lost but not being lost!
Jim; nice spread, in one hell of a location. I don't think those Eagles were actually fighting, they just landed to finish some business they had going on. Great shots from the interval setting There's a lot of power in that water, mechanical energy by another name. great vid
You and Ted are becoming Legends in your Time. Great vid and Great editing. Your a movie production company.
I'm so jealous it hurts. Usually at this time I'm having fun with my Canadian and Northern US States friends because I've been paddling for most of the winter, but I haven't been out since Jan 1st!
Lovely run there Jim and some great technique. Don't forget, lucky to live the rapid, lucky to find the spring and lucky to have a lovely family to come fetch you! :)
That ride is what we call in Texas A YEE HAW!!
SheerWill Survival YEE HAW!! For sure!!
What a fun run, thanks for sharing! :)
Love the epic music approaching that big rapid. Made it dramatic and you still nailed it. Awesome canoe skills complimented by good editing of the video.
Much appreciated. Good thing that music wasn’t actually playing when I was out there or I would never have mustered the courage
Nailed it! You make something difficult look so easy!✌️
Thanks a lot!
Really enjoyed feel like iam getting better watching you down here in Ga
Your canoeing skills are awesome !!! Thanks for letting me tag along in my comfy chair .... LG NB
You’re very welcome and thanks!!
Like the scene from Ace Ventura 2! Ha!! Man I was crying from laughing at that.
Another great adventure!
Great video you are fortunate to live in such beautiful country but what a shock to find a garbage dump out there. Sorry to say that man is not the best steward of the earth. I also did not notice any bugs I guess is still early in the spring for those.
That’s right, it was a hot day but too early for bugs. Ya, I’m not sure what the history of that place was but it may have been an old logging camp or hunt camp. There were no municipal dumps back then so people often had a dump on there property and buried garbage. Even pushed it off a boat into a lake. But also people often just used to trash the bush.
Awesome adventure Jim. You never fail to impress. Enjoy your whitewater videos! Look forward to your next one!
Thanks a lot! More to come for sure
I was watching in the background, while doing other stuff in my house. I'm glad that you're managing to get out there, under the circumstances. I think that you are fortunate to live on the Mag! Awesome place to be.
Another great video mate, love your content cheers 👏👏
Thanks!
Крутой парень!Крутые сьемки!Крутая природа!Молодец!!!
I believe those eagles were mating and not fighting. I think that's how they do it, For real. Great show as always.
Beautiful home in beautiful country. Your sure footedness on those portages is as impressive as your paddling skills! ~~~
Thanks very much!!
Excellent trip and good job on proper safety!
Great video Jim! Amazing the power of water! Thanks for sharing.
Jim you have a piece of paradise where you live. Way more healthier to live and grow your own. Was a fun trip to watch!
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed it!
good adventure Jim really love your enthusiasm
Thanks a lot!
Now that I've watched you in some very tricky situations. your knack for the positive thinking and a grin after all is done is powerful.
Thanks, ya I think that attitude definitely has come in handy many times.
@@JimBairdAdventurer keep em coming I am also from TO grew up Willowdale. My father was a scout leader for 17years. So I can relate done alot of winter camping still enjoy it today.
Great video Jim. First travelled the “Mag” 51 years ago. Remember Needle’s Eye, Three Snye, Canal, Thirty Dollar over a series of trips. Thanks for bringing it back. All the best. Hope to get out on the Grand when they open the access points.
Much appreciated. Those are runs below Wawashkesh Lake that I’ve paddled several times. That’s the best part of the river.
Great video! I couldn't help but think of Buck when you first started paddling.
I know, me too :( ...I’m posting a full doc. video from a big adventure I didn’t with the late great Buck a couple years back this Friday.
One HELLUVA backyard, Jim !!
wonderful neighborhood..🏞
Thanks 👍
Big Jimmy! You answered a question I asked you about those paddles in the comment section of a past video, and now you've answered it mid video!
Thanks again brother. I'm going with the Journey carbon. Just waiting for a sale. Pricey 🤑
That’s right, and I believe it was you who inspired me to talk about that in this vid too. Enjoy the Journey
Hey Jim! Awesome video and great technique! That was some intense rapids! Keep filming and I’ll keep watching! Oh my gosh your boy is so cute! So is Tori! Till next time!!
Thanks a lot man! Ya, more to come for sure.
Nice to see you out on the river and enjoying yourself during the lockdown there Jim..
Man, amazing video as always. You make it seem too easy but it actually not. Love it!!
Half the paddles, twice the man! #PaddleOn
👍👍
Nice video , and great filming !
Thanks a lot!
Always a good watch with you. Great paddling and amazing scenery as always. Thanks for sharing your wonderland.😘
You’re very welcome :)
Nice run Jim !
Thanks!
I was relaxed and enjoyed watching you run that rapid, that looked like fun. Had that been on the Yukon trip I would have been on the edge of my seat!
Definitely higher stakes when you’re deep in true wilderness.
Loving your content... I've spent some time on the mag.... After 30 years it never gets old and is never the same. I know what you mean about the 7th sense.... great video.
Nice J Stroke and choice of paddles.
Love your content Jim, Thanks brother
You’re welcome!
Alright, some whitewater! I'll bet it's pretty cold water. Thanks for the video, can't wait to get out on the water!
No problem! Cold for sure but the day was hot! It felt awesome to get out for sure. First tome for me this season.
I bet you would make a great teacher
Thanks!
I'm exhausted from that portage. Wheew.
Lucky to have a backyard like that!!! I would so love to have a small cabin by the water!!
Going back for the camera must really suck, but holy cow, it made for a great shot of you zipping past!
I gotta move north. Need some of this in my yard. Good shit dude.
