Good morning! Here's the link to the results of that Capcom survey: captown.capcom.com/en/super_elections/1 and here's where you can snag that sweet, sweet #HypeResponsibly tee: shop.superderekrpgs.com And check out the whole HitPoint JRPG showcase over here! ua-cam.com/users/live6Y-3SLrWREI
We RPG fans are absolutely feasting out here, so many cool titles coming from so many directions! As for the Capcom survey, I think Breath of Fire's position is far more positive than it looks! Unlike most other series listed, it not only hasn't had a new game (not counting ports/remasters) in over 20 years, but only the first two games are available on any sort of modern platform, and even then, it's part of the online subscription on Switch. Keep in mind, even Onimusha and Okami are on modern platforms and PC, so BoF making top ten in multiple categories at all is actually amazing
That's a very important takeaway. It's performing in the top-10, despite not having had a modern release in ages, and probably a good reason the game isn't even a blip on the radar for younger generations.
I think this is in part because BoF is the only major turn-based JRPG series by Capcom, so it's the only one people remember. They had more games like that, but they were mostly just released in Japan and have barely any following by comparison (some people may know Sweet Home because of its influence of Resident Evil).
Breath of Fire had an amazing showing in those results for a series that had its last physical game on the Playstation 2 in Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter aka: 5. That being one of the worst received as well considering many fans don't even know it exists. More still don't know there's a Breath of Fire 6. Any chance I got I brought up the Breath of Fire series as well as Megaman X: Command Mission as there wasn't any option for it anywhere which was a shame. Legends and Battle Network are the ones that get brought up all the time when it comes to Megaman RPGs but Command Mission is my personal favorite.
Breath of Fire needs to be a series sold to a decently funded indie company or outsourced at least. If Crapcom ever decided to make a new entry, they would fuck it up immensely. There's a charm to those games that just can't be emulated by such a large company as Crapcom. I don't see there ever being a new, good entry into the series, however. The gaming market has changed too much.
The last decent entry was BoF 4, that's 24 years ago, back when JRPGs were briefly not niche, but somewhat mainstream-ish in the West. It's quite telling that it did better in Japan when it comes to votes (well, general popularity at least). Also, the 20-30 y olds don't care about that series at all (logically, very few played it), so the chance for a revival is low, most likely; I doubt it'd sell very well either. BoF 6 probably killed it off - maybe not for good, but for a very long time. It's really too bad, I'd love to see a new "good" entry, but like you said, it's likely not happening.
Wonderful thing is, there are several indies working on games similar to Breath of Fire, and they don't have to pay Capcom royalties for the privilege. :)
I think the biggest problem with BOF not listing higher is that compared to the resident evils and devil may cry is they really haven't done much with it since 2000 (ignoring 5 and 6), which was 24 years ago, even the 30 years old were maybe kids back then. Compared to say Okami, which did better with a lot of the listing, compared to BOF, which they port over every console gen and is also a good game. It not really a surprise BOF didn't do better.
"An evolution of the JRPG" The Austin Jorgensen reward of whiteness in RPGs is theirs I think. Don't get me wrong it looks amazing and I will probably get it but that line gave me an uncomfortable chuckle.
That phrase can certainly give the wrong vibe when viewed through an American lens. I think I can see what they are _trying_ to say though; It's kind of like saying that JRPGs are _an_ evolution (not THE evolution) of Western RPGs. "Evolution" in this sense does not necessarily mean _better,_ but rather, _adapted._ And I think in that in _that_ light, the idea fits. But yeah, it gave me pause.
@@SuperDerek Yeah I didn't think they meant anything by it. My money is they were thinking of JRPG in terms of genre which is how most people use the word anyways.
Honestly, I'd love to see a new BoF in the style of Breath of Fire III or IV. I'm not sure what a modern technology title in the series would look like, but I think it'd be a tricky needle to thread.
visions of mana release date is my boyfriend's bday, i laughed at the irony, i know what im getting him. Oh wow thats your bday too? Haha awesome Expedition 33 is such wish fulfillment, I've wanted a new RPG IP turn based without the usual anime aesthetic. Obsucr delivered 🙌
I think it'll be really awesome to have a new turn-based RPG that might be able to help funnel more people in to the genre, and I think this one might help accomplish that. :)

Expedition 33 looks so good... Never thought I would see the day a western made JRPG(-ish?) would get me excited but here we are 👀
Right?! Here we are indeed!
You should check out Chained Echoes. It’s the best JRPG I’ve played in decades and it was made by a single person from the west.
Thank you so much for the shout out! 🥰 (4:30). Super appreciate you covering our game! (Helps greatly with the current Kickstarter campaign!)
Expedition 33 looks great. I'm very excited.
Love the chapters in the description. Sooooo helpful.
Some really cool games coming up! Expedition 33 looks awesome, should be a ton of fun!
You truly got my attention with Abyss x Xero being a ps2 Era style action rpg
Awesome to see you again Olivert Reise. That Expedition game giving me a lot of Shadow Hearts games in PS2.
Thanks! I'm actually planning on growing my hair out to about Olivier's hair length. Should make future cosplay endeavors a little less "wiggy" 🤭

Great minds, man. I will also be using Visions of Mana to celebrate my birthday. 🎉🎉
Really loving these weekly updates 👍🏼 keep it up!
Thank you Mercury!
We should all hail Baku for saving our sanity. Been eating good and going to keep eating good.
The Backlog is Real.
Damn. Barely had to attack that backlog.
As far as everything I’ve been playing lately SquareEnix & Falcom are essentially the only J devs I need
We are going to be eating good over the next couple years
What was that wonderful song playing in the background? Im a sucker for songs with sax in it.
Hey Derek! are you planning to update the streams channel with the gameplays and games streams you haven't uploaded?
Just set up Cold Steel IV playthrough to go live over the next 27 days. :)
Love this type of combat reminiscent of Dragoon and Mario rpg
Oooo brewing my tea now
Feels like everything is in August xd
Everything except September through July

"Raised my eyebrow." (Singular) 😅
🤨
I genuinely thought that's what you said. No offence intended. :)
lol, it definitely is exactly what I said. 😆
The story of Expidition 33 reminds me alot of Xenoblade 3! The game seems really good so I hope it turns out great.
Neat! I need to give Xenoblade a proper go sometime.

Hello, Do you want a Thumbnail editor?
Backed kingdoms of the dump 6 years ago !
I've been looking forward to this one for ages! I think I remember hearing about it from Daria. THAT's how long I've been waiting. 🥲

I think i prefer a new Breath of Fire than a remake. Not that the old one is bad (except you BoF V) but kinda tired of remake in general.

abyss cross zero
Think I'll just ask the devs and find out for sure. 😆
Update: Dev's have confirmed, it is "Cross" :)
