I owned a '72 Chrysler New Yorker from 1977 through 1982.. 440 4-barrel... one of the greatest cars I've ever owned! I currently have a 2019 Lincoln Nautilus, and even with the Turbo engine in the Nautilus, it can't ever come close to the smooth power of that New Yorker. I sure do miss that car!
I had a 77 New Yorker. 440 four barrel. What a beast. Loved the look of the grill. Mine was a four door, and I think it might be the one time a four door looked better than a two door. It was a hard top and with all four windows down it was really something, just open space front to back. What a way to cruise.
They were stunning in their day. Like the 1976 ad says "The Chrysler New Yorker, it's the talk of the town". The reason the dash pad is two different colors has to do with sun damage. My grandmother's 71 Dart Swinger did that too. The reason that quarter window on the drivers side moved so easily is the 76 New Yorker came in two 2 door variations. The St Regis Coupe that you bought the engine out of. It had closed quarter windows and 3/4 padded vinyl top. Or you could get it in a 2 door hardtop with a halo vinyl top. No post. Quarter windows roll down. By 76 the rear windows may or may not roll down. In those days Auto manufacturers were trying to save a dollar by cutting corners. One way was by deleting roll down windows in favor of fixed rear quarter windows.
I bet that looked cool brand new if it was red with a black top and white seats. Them rims do look cool good choice. It is a big boat for a 2 door shame they give up
My Mom had one and she put a hell of a lot of miles on hers. That thing would get up and float down the road. It had some big Cadillac radials on it and when you punched it you could hear that big old 4 barrel kick down and suck copious amounts of fuel down it's throat. That thing had lots of power and it was the shit. Extremely comfortable in the front or the rear.
The diff should be a 9 1/4 12 bolt. Most likely a 3.21 ratio for that yr. The Mopar term for limited slip is Sure Grip. The 76 440 std T code engine was rated 205 Hp @ 3600 rpm with 320 lb ft of torque @ 2000 rpm. The hood rod as you called it is actually a type of torsion bar that rides those slides. Works great, but is a bear when you want to take the hood off.. 2 drs are rare. The reason you couldn't get the doors open was most likely because it had PL. Those are electromechanical. You need the key to operate them if there is no power or they fail in either position.. It's a bad design Chrysler used until '80. Glad you got the mill. You might've considered the trans too, it had the real non lock up 727 that yr.
Yes, we need to see the VIN. The VIN, the cowl tag and trim tag tell the whole story and then some. Here we go: VIN is C for Chrysler, S for Special price class, 23 for two door hard top, T for 440 V8 with 4 barrel, 6 for 1976 model year, C for Jefferson, MI assembly (which is closed, it was replaced by the Jefferson North facility in 1991, which still operates today) and the rest is the production sequence. The "mini" New Yorker is an '87 (10th digit of the VIN is an "H"). Looks like this 440 has a Thermobog, I mean Thermoquad Carter carburetor. Typical poor design in the 1970s and Chryslers were stallers as a result of them. You were too far from the tag for me to get everything. No, the original exterior color was Velvet Black as it is now (TX9), the roof is original (V4X), and the turn signal indicators on the fenders are original. It has a high capacity fan (probably heavy duty cooling), H53 is single air conditioning system, this car also had a door ajar indicator lamp too, E85 should be for the 440 V8 with 4 barrel as well. The "what's this?" is garage door hardware, namely the hinges and screws. I've put up/repaired a few doors in my day, so I know them when I see them. LOL. Good find on the Craftsman USA sockets. Yes, those appear to be V or V^ series sockets, made by Danaher/Moore Drop Forge for Sears.
Thermobog is right! Pre Lean Burn crap,is worst.Low compression 440 can till be woke up.By the way-your decoded really helps the video.VIN's are very necessary!
Yup I just love going through the junkyard cars and trucks when I am at they junkyard because you never know what would you find. Can't wait to get out of this dumb sickness with people and go back to the junkyard and find some cool stuff.
I liked the Chrysler New Yorker in red, yes I know some don't because of shrinking but to me still was a nice looking cars which I remember those perfectly & the previous design in the 80's.
I had a 1978 new Yorker 400 b motor I miss that car it was my father in laws wedding present to me and my wife..........now I can't find one in running condition for less than $8000.....my father in law paid $800 ......really loved that car!
My parents had a 1973 Newport Chrysler and you gave it to me for my first car everything was a boat but I kept it clean and put some keys toes on it 10 to Windows is robin egg blue paint and butt roast drive here in Cincinnati and drove it forever
The black, C Body, New Yorker may be considered cooler looking than the red, K Car, New Yorker. But from a business standpoint; cars like the black one were causing Chrysler to go bankrupt in the late 70s and cars like the red one are what saved them in the 80s.
No "they don't wright em like that anymore". That car is part of a era long ago and long forgotten. Good of you to document and highlight its positives. And as far as being any damage, that car was designed and manufactured knowing shit happens in an automobile. Slide off the road, slam into a tree. Hook onto it, drag the boat back on the road and be on your way. Let's see you do that in a prius. Nowadays you'll find mainly 90's era crap being replaced by 00's chrome plated plastic BULLSHIT. And that landough top was a mistake made by most luxury car manufacturers.
It’s a shame that you have to come across and find nice looking antique & classic luxury land liners in that kind of condition if if i had the room and the right proper funds i would have it restored the way that it’s supposed to be, it hurts me to see awesome rides like that be abandoned and found in junkyards. the reason you couldn't release the parking brake to move thee diff was because it has a automatic parking brake release and the manual release is high above the parking brake
Interestingly enough, the New Yorker St. Regis was the top of the line model in 76, higher than the Brougham model. They were standard with a 440, non lean burn, while the 400 lean burn was actually an option. Fine Corinthian leather anyone?
Looks like a tow package car so it should have the sure grip 8 3/4 ( might be a 9 1/4 which the fitted to 74-77 cop cars ) , the 440 had a low comp of 8 to 1 which they claimed made 220 net bhp , in reality it’s closer to 320bhp on the dyno , yeah you won’t get into a 74-77 if it’s been sitting a while . The handles break leaving you locked out ...... don’t yank on them , the climate 2 was an early version of climate control rather than air con , and the choreograph clock was a nice option ...... grab the crusie control whilst your there ( it’s on the drivers side wheel well )
