Should We Quit YouTube After Egypt? 🇪🇬

  • During our exploration of Egypt and its history and culture, I decided it would be fun to pay homage to “Hatshepsut’, one the the most powerful woman to have ever lived. Egyptologists generally agree that there were around 170 pharaohs, each with their own stories, I have found that this gives anyone exploring Egypt’s past the unique opportunity to go down a historical rabbit hole of their own choosing. Cleopatra is infinitely famous nowadays, however there are other ancient Egyptian women who were even more powerful and perhaps even more significant, Hatshepsut is the queen of queens on my opinion! However, we were prevented from filming our ‘movie’ about her before we even really got started! This episode takes a turn and instead I talk about the difficulties of travelling and filming in Egypt. Unfortunately there is a systemic issue within the country’s tourism sector; many Egyptians who operate in the sector treat tourists with very little respect and they prevent people from filming content for social media (I believe this possibly comes from governmental mistrust and suspicion born from the Arab Spring). To reiterate though we harbour no ill will against the Egyptian people! They are wonderful people and it is a wonderful country. It’s just a shame that it’s ruined by a select few in the tourism sector! This all leads me to question of whether the UA-cam journey we’re on is worth it? Not one to be deterred though I decide to persevere! Hopefully future trips will not be as challenging as this one!

Found you about a week ago from the YT home page, and the lessons you're giving and personal stories really makes it worth watching. One can always just go and show something, but the places you're going has such rich and deep history that you're really session teaching and I think it's great.
Side note: I recognize this temple from the game Assassins Creed Origins! Technically I've experienced it in the video game haha. So cool!
That game got me really interested in Egypt history in general, so my surprise when I see you navigating the places I've ready read upon myself, it's all incredibly interesting. Plus you're doing a whole bunch of other locations that have just as much history.

Thank you 🙏🏻 You get it! We’re trying to create travel content that gives people a real feel for a country and isn’t just generic! So many UA-camrs visit a place and tell their audience nothing about the history of culture.
I played assassins creed Valhalla and Odyssey a few years ago but I never checked out the Egypt one 🤣 I’m working full time AND making all this UA-cam content so unless our channel blows up and we can do it full time (unlikely lol), I just don’t think I’ll have the time to play it 😭 I saw the gameplay online though and it looks amazing! Anyway, checkout our Karnak episode, I hear that’s in assassins creed too!
      Thanks for the comment 🫡

We don’t consider ourselves a ‘shorts channel’ but we get subs from them, so the hope is always that those subs then watch our long-form content - so really great to hear this! Thanks for watching 😊

Don’t give up mate! Definitely keep cracking on and listen to Amy’s pep talks! I so enjoy the videos you guys make and what a great collection of home movies for you to watch down the track. Sorry about Hatshepsut, what a bummer. Onwards!

    • @less-travelled
      @less-travelled  3 місяці тому

Hahaha 'onwards'. I'm not sure I'm still saying that on stuff we've filmed recently - I need to bring it back 🤣 Yeah it was a bummer, there was a real effort to remove Hatshepsut from the historical record (they scratched her off the bas-relief carvings etc) and Egyptologists think one of the reasons was because she was a women. So once again she didn't get her moment on our channel, a MAN stopped us filming. It might explain why seconds after he stopped us filming the sky went dark and there was a small earthquake 🤣 👀 As always, thanks for watching!

What a shame that you couldn’t do this video. I was really looking forward to seeing it. I think I have watched all of your videos so far and think that you are doing a great job with educating and showing a part of the world that I’m interested in but would never see.

Wow! You really understand what we’re trying to do! What do you think we should do about Hatshepsut? The guy let me film the place without speaking so I could voice it over but it won’t be as good as our normal standard video and it looks like it’s only 15 minutes or so. Should I still upload it? Thanks again, so honoured that you’ve watched all our videos?!?

Please upload the video. I was thinking that one way around the problem was to just do a voice over of the video. I would definitely watch. Love your videos. I talk about them all the time to my family. I’m amazed that two people would take on such a scary trip. You and Amy are very brave. But I’m so glad you did this so you can look back on this in your later years and be so grateful you did. So please upload the video I would watch it.

@@stacey9501 🤣 that made our day, Amy said “Stacey knows my name!” haha! Ok ok we’ll do it 😅There’s also a very nerdy reason to do it, as mentioned efforts were made to remove Hatshepsut from the historical record, so it did occur to me that once again she doesn’t get her moment - I’m doing Hatshepsuts bidding 🤣 Getting all these comments does motivate us to keep going. We don’t usually get a lot of comments, so we don’t know if people really care 🤷🏼‍♂️ Thanks again!

We have great history from places like 3500 years old (choghazanbil zigurat) to persepolice 2500 yo. And we would be super happy if someone comes to our country and make videos for informing people about it! There is no content on iran because of our dictator regime, but people are super friendly! :)

unironically before i click on the video i was like mate you're 5 years too early for this title lmao. regards to your GoPro, that's probably (by probably i mean definitely) the AWB (auto white balance) kicks in, that's your camera trying to make the 'color white' looks white / base on the light temperature, all camera does that if you're not in manual mode or lock the color temperature setting prior to start recording, it's no biggie and less of a hassle for your style of long take vlogging, i doubt most of your audience would even notice the swift color shift, if anything the subpar audio recording / wind noise was way more disracting to your thoughtout narration
i would recommend you look into DJI Osmo Pocket 3 if you're considering switch gears, it probably has better image quality and better low light performance than GoPro, and low-er profile than the GoPro (tho the gopro was low enough profile already i would argue), and you can bundle with their wireless microphone ,would be quite nice for your style of vlogging (although microphone is a big no-no for traveling Egypt acording to other vloggers
i'm not trying to defend the guard, he's probably trying to frame you as filming for commercial purpose or television or something, but i doubt that he actually think that or actually care, he's prabably trying to make some quick buck from this teeny authority that he possess, it's futile to reson your way out of bribery seeking, besides, tbh there's not much 'there' there in Hatshepsut compare to other temple anyway 🤷‍♀, other than the stunning 'modernist' architecture of course
totally unrelated: when i and my friend visited a mall (next to ikea and decathlon) in New Cairo, they have a policy that's not allow to bring camera in, an effing mall! i have no notes. and then we kept it in the reception desk as requisted and collected it back after we left the premises
i like your vlog style pal, no annoying jump-cut, well articulated, the pacing was great, good cinematography etc., cheers mate

I’m glad you saw the irony in the title 🤣 Thanks for such an in-depth comment!
It’s shame you had a similar experience in Egypt. I think that cutting content every time you say ‘ummm’ or moving at a super fast pace to keep people watching is disingenuous, so in the same vein we aim to be completely honest about our experiences! So although I’m wary of slamming Egypts tourist sector too hard, I kind of feel like it needs to be said! 🤷🏼‍♂️
Funnily enough we’ve already bought the DJI mics (that’s what I actually used for the voice over in this video) and they are literally light years apart! I completely agree that the audio was actually the biggest problem. I never knew it was so bad until we returned from Egypt!!
We’ve been looking at the DJI osmo, so yeah your comment just confirms that it’s the right choice for us! Thanks for that explanation of white balance I would never have known that! I also think you’re right about the size etc for our style. When we walked across Jordan we couldn’t carry a massive camera and we have a similar trips planned!
Thanks again, glad you enjoy the content!! 😌
