Splendid! I never knew the half of this. Romantic tales and Hollywood films have mythologised the man out of all recognition.

Thanks Duncan. I've always been fascinated by him but wanted to get the true story. Hollywood certainly spins a good tale but lacks facts.

I am from Clan MacGregor. Our family moved to the states in 1700s because of the ban on MacGregors

They should never have been persecuted the way they were.

      Supposedly my family as well.
I have a 3 ring binder somewhere with much of this information but it is 80 years tucked away

Thanks for this. My dad was named Rob McGregor (Wilson) after this man. My nanna left for London (from Forfar) at 15 after tragically losing both her parents. She never returned. Never spoke of her family but was always a proud Scot.
My father then migrated to Perth. Australia.
I've not been able to find evidence of our relationship with this man but it is family folklore and now I have a grandson who also shares the Rob name..

Very interesting. Sounds like there's a connection somewhere. If you go to the website Scotland's People you may be able to trace back to him. Thanks for sharing and for watching!

David Stevenson, who wrote a biography of Rob Roy, drew a sharp line between the man and the myth. He noted that no one who had previously written about the man seemed to have read any of the relevant historical documents.

At the beginning you failed to mention that on 7th February 1603, Clan Gregor met a Clan Colquhoun force which was funded by King James VI in Glen Fruin. The King wanted to make an example to other highland clans of his power by destroying the clan that he regarded as the most dangerous in the highlands, Clan Gregor.
The Colquhoun force numbered around 800, 300 of which were on horseback and the rest were on foot, the MacGregor force numbered around 400 on foot. The MacGregor force split into two groups, as the Colquhoun's travelled up the glen one MacGregor group attacked them from the front and the other group attacked from the rear, thus cutting off the Colquhoun's way of retreat back down the glen, they were trapped.
As the Colquhoun force scattered to the sides of the glen the horsemen were forced into a bog, with the weight of horses and riders they sank into the bog, so the MacGregor's started their rout. At the end of the battle around 200 of Colquhoun's men lay dead, MacGregor fatalities were light numbering only 5.
Clan Gregor won the battle of Glen Fruin, but they lost their freedom after James VI proscribed them.

Rob Roy MacGregor did not steal any money from Montrose, FACT. Read the book Rob Roy MacGregor His life and time's, by WH Murray. This is THE most definitive book written about R.R. MacGregor.

@@scotlandshistory Also, R.R. MacGregor did not get to the Battlefield of Sherifmuire, hence he could not have run away from the Battlefield, he and his Gregorach were safe guarding a Ford across a river near the Battlefield and stopped a small force of Dragoons from crossing and pursuing any retreating Highlanders.
