  • I wanted to share with you both WHAT I PACK for a Ndutu Serengeti Safari, and what bag I use to get all of my kit over there and back home safely!
This is the f-stop Tilopa Camera Bag, and I've been using these bags for around 5 years now. I am often asked what bags I use, and what bags are best for 400mm & 600mm telephoto lenses. This bag option is great as it fits both of these lenses (not together) and works well to solve your safari-packing concerns.
It's a quick video but shows just how I pack, and how I fit it all in. There are many bag options out there, but this is the one that I've found works best for me.
    Pro's:
    * Durable camera bag that protects gear from the elements.
    * Fits all of the gear I take on safari.
    * Very comfortable fit over the shoulders, even when the bag is heavy.
    * No costs spared in terms of materials used, everything is well made with quality construction.
    * I can custom the bag as I want. I can even buy smaller inner ICU's for weekend-trip, leaving space in the bag for clothes or other items.
    * I can take just my ICU unit on safari, and then leave the other shell at the lodge, saving me space on the car.
    * Fits well in the overhead compartment of most flights. I may need to remove the drone bag for some planes, but that slots in easily next to my bag.
    * Should I want, there's space for my laptop and hard drives, too.
    Cons:
    * Perhaps the only one I can think of, is that it does not have wheels. For me and many others, I don't see this as being an issue, but I know some folk prefer, or are not able to carry a bag like this over their shoulders.
I am a Sony Alpha ambassador so all of my gear is Sony.
Sony 400 f2.8 GM (including the 1x4 and 2x teleconverters)
    Sony 70 - 200 f2.8 GM
    Sony 16 - 35 f2.8 GM
    Sony A1
    Other goodies packed are:
    DJI Mavic 3 Classic
    Swarovski NL Pure 8 x 42
    Panerai Submersible 47mm
    Persol 714 sunglasses
    GoPro Hero 11 Black edition
    Holdfast Travel Wallet
Let me know what you take up to the Serengeti in the comments below, and what bag you use for your packing.

Nice packing, I need to re-think how I pack my Shinn after seeing your layout. And you didn't even fake touch an element :)

Do you leave the lens hood for your 400 at home ?

One question, how do you carry the cameras and lenses while on safari? Presumably you keep the bodies on the lenses rather than having to be take it all off on every drive?

Hi Jonathan, absolutely spot on. I mount all cameras and lenses on the first day, and keep the telephoto in hand out of the bag. What I love about the f-stop bag, is that the outer bag stays in camp (unless I suspect wet weather), and then I only take my inner ICU compartment with on game drive.
