I work for long hours job, but can still listen to your video. I have watched almost every video from your channel, it make me feel like i am in the wood with you and learn a lot on the field...hope i can join your workshop soon when i saving enough. Thanks a lot for your experience.
Fun video. I also watched your one from last year. I enjoyed seeing the differences. I’d be interested in also seeing what your plan is for photo storage. Thank you for sharing.
Inverted monopod, boom and remote trigger info is brilliant. Now that I'm thinking about it I've done similar with my phone or gopro for video. It never crossed my mind to try it for stills....DUH!😂 Have a fantastic trip!!
I took the 100-400 and a 24-70 to South Africa last fall. Wish I’d had more reach for the birds. Otherwise the 100-400 pretty much handled all the big wildlife.
Wow that's a lot of stuff! But you are a pro running workshops so to be expected. I've been to Kruger only a few times with minimal kit. It works for me both in the public Skukusa camp area where vehicles are limited to the roads and gravel tracks, and in a private reserve where the vehicles can go xc. The Z 400 f4.5 and 85 1.8 on Z7 & Z6ii worked well. Leveraging the crop ability of 45MP images to give higher effective range (85 covers 85-150, and 400 to 600). A two prime set with two bodies for no lens changes in the dust/rain. A compact and lightweight kit for long days out, and no issues with carry-on.
Steve, you might wanna check the new Z 400mm f4.5 prime lens… it’s Razor Sharp on Z9 and generates beautiful bokeh.. it’s same as 70-200 lens size. In short it’s Awesome.
@@SteveMattheis I assumed that, notice I said discuss, more as a means for anyone not knowing how to insure their equipment or the best way to go about doing it.
Good content one question as I’m heading to South Africa in a month (4 day safari). What camera insurance company do you use? As I still need to purchase insurance for my international travels. How comfortable is that Gura Gear Kiboko 2.0 30L bag, looking to purchasing one in the next couple days? Thanks
I know you are probably not going to vlog in Africa. However, I would suggest that with whatever videos you take, compile a short video and do an off-camera narration and montage of any relevant photos you would like to share after you get home. This would be good P.R. for next years Africa trip. Don't ruin your trip but if time permits It would be nice to see what goes on.
You can’t just put that photo in the background and not talk about it! Stunning! I know where you were when you took it, but what time of year? Late fall? Late spring? Come on Steve, share the skinny.😂
Hey Steve, I'm currently looking for a new bag that would fit both the 400 2.8 TC with hood reversed attached to a Z9 and the 800 PF with hood reversed attached to a Z8 or Z9. Would you be able to tell me if both of those combinations with the hoods reversed would fit in the Gura Gear Kiboko 30L 2.0?
Thanks for all the details...quesstion: do they turn the vehicle off when photographing or how do you deal with engine vibration and or heat haze? Lastly and most importanly, where you get that image behind you printed at? Metal or on maboard? :-D. Have a great time.
Wish I could be there in the back seat!!! would be interested to know how you manage the images at the end of the day? Are you taking a laptop and portable hard drive or drives or just loading cards? If so would be great to know what you use and trust on the road. Have a great trip Steve!!
You’ve got bigger cahonas than me to pack lenses into checked luggage…I don’t trust anyone with my bags. 😊 Have a great trip!! Can’t wait to see and hear about it.
Thanks for sharing. Does Nikon have a smartphone app for controlling the camera? I'm thinking that would be great for your shots using your monopod setup. Instead of having to look down at the screen a few feet below you, you could actually have a larger screen and have more control over the camera.
Great info especially about the monopod, upside down shooting. That is a great idea. I'm curious why one would opt for the 2xTC on the 400/2.8? Having the built-in TC, I would see much more versatility by using a 1.4TC instead. Then you can still take advantage of the flexibility and flip from 560/4 to 784/5.6 at anytime. Using the 2x limits you to 800/5.6 unless you are trying to get to 1120/8 which I doubt you are. I've seen some really detailed comparisons between using the 1.4 with built in 1.4 VS the 2.0 and the IQ seems to be nearly identical. Bringing a 1.4 would also give you more feasible redundancy for the 100-400 in case the 400/2.8 was broken. Then at least you have 560/8. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on that and why you chose the 2.0? Have a great trip!!
Great video. Very helpful, particularly the monopod trick. My question relates to weight restrictions. I have an upcoming trip which includes 2 camps in Tanzania, 1 in Botswana, and another in South Africa. At least 2 of the bush flights I will be taking have a total weight limit of 33 pounds for all luggage including camera gear. If your camera bag weighs about 25 pounds, how do you deal with the weight restrictions?
This was so helpful! I have one question. As far as light, it seems like when the sun raises and sets, it lights up and darkens quickly in Africa. Do you feel the 400 2.8 (as far a light availability) is enough, or do you feel a 5.6 would be sufficient for Africa? My first trip is coming up soon!
Hey Steve, been following you off and on for a couple years. Even hoped I would see you at Yellowstone during my last visit. How has that latest ruling requiring UA-camrs to get a permit impacted you?
@@SteveMattheis I was hoping there was as my middle name is Steven and I need all the help that I can get. Enjoy your trip and look forward to seeing the results.
Hi Steve! Thanks for that informative video. Question, since I am currently also planning my trip to Africa: What's the weight of your carry-on bag fully loaded, and which airline do you take, that is accepting that weight and bag dimensions?
Hi Steve. Any plans on getting the z600 f/4? I'm also a wildlife shooter but on the fence between the z400 and 600. Are you happy with the IQ from the 400 + 2X TC? Thanks and have a great trip!
FYI, the biggest human killers in Africa - apparently, because I haven’t actually been there - are not lions, leopards, elephants or hyenas. Watch out for hippos. Aaaaand, are tse tse flies still a thing? You’re welcome. Oh, and maybe watch out for the other critters too. Have fun and as always I’ll be watching for your shots.

Great info Steve. Always look forward to your videos. Awesome landscape in background!
Thanks 👍
I live in Salt Lake City, down the street from Pictureline. Great company for sure.
The dangling monopod is a great idea. I'd be terrified of dropping it, but it should make for great photo opportunities you wouldn't otherwise get.
I think this looks perfect for your trip and a well honed bag. Best of luck to you!

Good hunting. I look forward to seeing the images you bring home.
Great tips Steve, especially the monopod. Will give it a go.
Hope you have an amazing trip. Safe travels, hopefully I will join you in a couple of years. Currently saving. Have fun
It will really be unaffordable in a couple of years. Already there in my mind. Not a prudent thing to spend your money on.

Thanks. This was timely. Just planning for a trip this summer. Have a good time and look forward to seeing what you are able to capture.

Yes, I have used it and it is excellent
I’ll be using it a lot this year. Glad I got it over the zoom. It’s one of Nikons best releases yet because of the weight and size.
Amazing kit. Awesome.

The hood fit right in the bag after all so no problem 👍

Mamiya lens hood

Do you store gear inside the bag all the time ?
Great stuff… how do you focus on the subject when you hang the camera on monopod outside the vehicle?
Autofocus… subject and eye detection of Z9 works great.
