It's like listening to a loudspeaker that has some small item that is not perfectly solidly attached, thereby adding a fairly high frequency buzz whenever he produces a vowel sound from the rear half of his mouth. One can only sing with the upper respiratory system with which one is born...
He had a great voice. That aria was desperately boring. Should we blame Verdi? Perhaps. Perhaps not. I'm inclined to blame Pav: he tended to chuck out the same kind of noise all the time. Nice noise, but the same. Lovely, but always the same.

@@pavarotti744 my recollection is that everything came over in a bored mezzavoce. I could be wrong: I was at the 1972 league cup final when Stoke surprisingly beat Chelsea 2-1 (dad was from Stoke). For years, I lamented that all three goals were at the other end. Then I found a highlights DVD and it turns out that it was 1-1 at half time. Memory-wise, it's been downhill since then.

I don't think you get Pavarotti but it is OK. Not everyone can afford nice things.
