Me too -- I got gen 1, my first-ever firearm. It really is an ideal first gun: easy to shoot, super reliable, super accurate, and not as loud as an AR-15.
I took my mother out shooting the other day with the intent to find her something that she can use for home defense. She is very small and in her 70's. She had a lot of issues with her grip. Not actually holding onto the gun, but just where to put her support hand and repeating a proper grip each time. After shooting several handguns she shot my AR-9 and said that was what she wanted. I told her about the Extar EP9 and that's what she settled on. I think it's actually going to be perfect for her. It's lite weight, inexpensive, low recoil, and should be easy for her to use. I'm looking forward to getting her out to the range with it.
Extar recommended against +P ammo, for the Gen 1 EP9 at least. A saw a comment on a UA-cam video posted by someone who said that +P cracked the polymer frame of his EP9; Extar was able to repair it, though. After reading that, I've totally avoided +P for it.
I bought 2 of them more than a few years ago, no issues. I've recommended them to at least 6 people and they've never complained to me about theirs. I have one friend that shoots a lot and he love's his, my only complaint is they never released the expected .45 ACP and 10 mm versions and those versions supposedly came with a NP3 coated bolt, which I think would be sweet for the 9mm platform. Simply, put there is no other firearm in this price point, which can do this but its not going to be near as cool without an arm brace. Also, why does this gun make sense, many people own expensive 9mm PCC's, not many will really go hard with them because they are so expensive North of 2k. This firearm is something you can make some memories with because you will literally take it everywhere with you and worry less about it getting scraped or dropped in a mud puddle, its polymer who really cares and it cost less than 5 bills.
Not sure why no one ever mentions the FM9 by Foxtrot Mike. I got mine for $599 with a side charging handle, 7" (they have 5", 7", 9" and 16") takes glock mags and has the last round bolt hold open. And they're aluminum. Not plastic. Excellent little AR9s and I'm super glad I chose it over the extar.
@@DronesUnder2A I've transferred at least one of them they are nice but at 25% more expensive some people just question why do I need to spend more when the plastic version just works.
Ok between Honest Outlaw and you... I'm sold on this firearm. Outlaw has a gen 1 with over 3k rounds and it's still going strong (and he's rough on guns) so this is now on my "must have" list. Thank you for a great video and stay safe.

@@DronesUnder2A While the FM9 may also be a good option the FM9 is getting close in cost to other good options such as what the Stribog SP9A1 sold for earlier this year. The price is a little higher now. The point is there is nothing else really at $450 or less other than Kel-Tec Sub2000 and Hi-Point 995. These are very different. One has a 16" barrel and is a folding firearm and the other only holds 10 rounds in a mag and many say is strange looking if not ugly and is not as easy to clean. The Sub2000 has a number of things that many do not like which is why MCarbo sells so many different upgraded parts. ExtarUSA with their Gen2 put many of the upgraded components into their product that Gen1 buyers were installing. Neither the Kel-Tec or Hi-Point have AR controls that many are very used to using.
I just purchased the second generation one unbelievable work with all my magazines very light shooting. I purchased it after seeing your video. I don’t think the price is going to stay that way for long. Extar owner has been designing and building this kind of stuff, he has been around a long time. I purchased a professional ordinance (EXTAR OLD COMPANY IN THE 90’S) back in the late 90s when the band was in a fact he was the one that came out with that carbon 15 late on Bushmaster bought his company. The owner of Extar, he’s been doing this for many years he knows his business for sure. I shot thousands upon thousands of rounds through that professional ordinance carbon 15 and I never had a problem back in the day naturally when the band was lifted I upgraded all my stuff and got rid of it. Like I said the owner of Extar Has been in the firearms business and making these polymers for many years if they can hold up to a 223/5.56. Way back in the 90s which everyone knows plastics over time have improvements on T&D. The life of the Extar will have been no problems like I said I had over 3000 rounds out of the 5.56 that he used to make years ago and this is just a 9 mm. Many people have between 10 and 20,000 rounds through these guns I know someone personally that has close to 10,000 rounds first GEN.
This was my first gun I just bought a couple of months ago , im 22 I just got into guns this year , and let me say for 500 bucks its totally worth it I'm under a older guys wing , a arms expert in military and police , and he was suprised of how good the thing is fornthe price
In the years past, I've ordered a few of them for customers at the store. While I've historically turned my nose up at plastic rifles and handguns, this one is sturdy where it counts. I honestly never heard a complaint from the people who bought them, and Extar was proactive in letting me (personally) know exactly where that gun was during the shipping process. A great option if you don't want to invest $1500 in something before you know you're going to use it - or like it. Today's 9mm PCC's are going ever-higher in prices, and this one is a refreshing respite from the tired argument of price versus utility arguments that people love to have here on these platforms. At this price point, you can buy several and a lot of folks can enjoy shooting them rather than having to take turns. Thanks for a great review on this GB!
I purchased a gen 1 a few years ago and have beat the heck out of it! It runs everything, no misfires, or jams. The gen 2 has addressed all the issues I was going to change on my own. Now I can just buy the parts from Extar. Great gun! This is truly one of the funnest and most accurate guns in its and above it's class. And the price is amazing!
I’m looking forward to your practical accuracy test. I only have a sample size of one. I’ve owned my gen 1 years now and it’s incredibly accurate. Aside from the shell deflector being a bit chewed up it’s holding up amazingly. Only part I’ve replaced it the buffer retainer holder thingy. Went from a polymer to a steel one
I'm looking forward to picking one of these up. I have a range of my land for pistols, rifles and bows. My son in law and myself are both ex military, and teach my grandkids shooting and gun safety. I think they would absolutely love shooting this. Thanks for the video.
6 months, 500 rounds and no issues. No misfires, failure to feed/eject or any other issues. I swapped the buffer, spring and tube with a standard AR-15 buffer, spring and tube... Much better!
Thank you so much for this video! I've been going back and forth for several weeks. Finally ordered one and less an than hour, my FFL was confirmed. Now I play the shipping wait game!
Hey Graham! Just swapped out my Extar Gen 2 grip with a MAGPUL K2 XL. IT FEELS GREAT! The B5 is a great grip but it is tiny. It really helps working the trigger too.
I almost bought one of those, but, instead, decided to get me a Ruger PC model 19122 tactical (collapsible stock and pistol grip) with a floating handguard and a 16" barrel. It cost me $750 dollars (about $500 less than the CZ Scorpion). And yet, my Ruger PC is reliable, super accurate, with great ergonomics. The 16" barrel adds velocity, increases accuracy, and ensures bullet expansion reliability. The PC is the ideal home defense weapon system. An AR-15 5.56 rifle in urban environments have serious liability issues, due to long distance traveling and overpenetration. The PC is more suitable for CQB, and it won't blow your ear drums out indoors, because the concusion report is significantly less than a 5.56.
Welcome to the channel! We started commenting after noticing the differences during the WFD test. It's funny, if you go to the range with just one type of ammo that's just the "smell of burnt gunpowder", but if you take multiple different loads they all have a slightly different smell.
I have two Gen 1 EP9's, with many rounds through them. Absolutely flawless performance, excellent accuracy. Glad the Gen 2 is continuing the quality and price.
OK, now that the rigorous testing is over... Put a can on that gat and run the snot out of it! SGM tactical 33rd mags work great too. Recoil is so light because there is a big synthetic rubber donut in the rear of the buffer tube. The buffer has a conical end piece that directs energy from the inside of the donut to the outside of it. Not just rearward to the shooters shoulder. Elegant and simple. Great vid as always!
I love mine. Put a cheap red dot and love plinking with it. 100% reliable but I only have about 400 rounds through it, so it’s not my home defense gun YET. But it will be.
now this is a video that i need, a comparison and trial of different kinds of mags that the ep9 can/may carry. i am considering this gun or the CZ p10c for my first gun!! nice video!
VERY good systematic and comprehensive video. I can't help thinking this would be even more awesome in 10mm, but even in 9mm it seems like a competent competitor to the - for example - Hi-Point 995. As for the high velocity 9mm, there's something to be said for the ~2,000 fps's flat trajectory for a longer reach to minimize range estimation error consequences and improved shot follow-up with the extremely low recoil you noted. Great video - an eye-opener. Thanks!
Agreed, save the +P for your compact EDC, the barrel length on this will give you the velocity you need. (And use regular pressure rounds for target practice).
Great review my man. I love my gen 1 at 25 yards with my red dot. It just keeps flipping the metal targets cause it’s so accurate. One of my favorite guns to shoot besides the star BM.
I wanted one when they first came out buy gave up when I found out that I had to order straight from them (I don't really like buying online). But after your tabletop review I said heck with it and ordered one. Should be here next week.
Great review. I’ve had the same weapon for about two years now. It has been completely reliable (400 rounds or so), and is very user friendly. It has become my primary home defense weapon. I actually prefer it to my CZ Scorpion.

It be cool to do a quick suppressed video with a couple different types of ammo just to give your impressions of how it performs suppressed. Looks fun!
You are a awesome reviewer! You should have more subs. I love the dinner part of your reviews. It's kinda like the desert of the video. Keep doing what you are doing.
Thank you for the comment about the suppressor not being the base performance of the gun. I watched another very prominent channel testing the EP 45 and he had a suppressor the whole video. And I was thinking this video is not very useful to me.
my experience with 9mm blowbacks...stribog a1 gen 2 & beretta cx4 storm; with both I feel that they recoil similar to an AR-15 with 16" barrel; Beretta stayed & stribog sold...

Over the years several people have enjoy those "tasting notes", and sometimes it can be helpful like if you shoot at an indoor range. Some loads can have a rather nasty smell and indoors not only are you sorrounded by it, but you can leve smelling like it.
Right when I'm about to grab more ammo.... Been eying this for a while. Ammo or Extar? Extar or ammo?? Decisions... Great review. Never grabbed this because I wasn't sure if it'd just be a fun novelty or if it would replace the nightstand piece.
Great review and contents. I have the gen 1 and have been very happy with mine. There was plans of Extar doing a 10mm, but I believe they've cancelled it. The gen 2 has a better look, but no need in me having both lol
Bought an ExtarEP9 in 2021 and my suppressor yhm R9 got approved a couple months ago and it shoots like a dream especially for the $!! This PCC is awesome!!! Thanks for testing this with different mags and ammo, as we have a better clue of how much value it offers at its price point.
@@markrippt4677 I changed the original handguard for a aftermarket mlok and the direct thread works 💯!! It’s truly a pleasure to shoot. 9mm price sucks for now, but if I’m gonna throw $ down range, I might as well enjoy it 😏
@@markrippt4677 obsidian is a better buy if you want to maximize your versatility with 9mm platforms…. But you’ll pay for it…. The Yhm R9 is an overall decent 9mm budget can versatile across different platforms with 5.56 and .308 with >16” barrels, 300 BO > 9” barrel. It doesn’t come with a Nielsen device tho 😒
Switching to metal for buffer retention was also a nice upgrade. Some reported the polymer one broke. Many spent extra buying a steel one from another company. So it was just another upgrade on the Gen 2 with no increase in price.
Honest Outlaw has a video up with 3000 rounds through a Gen 1 Ep9. He reported the only issue being the brace he had on that working loose but that because he had not staked it. Also optics were tricky to mount. Repeating again this was a EP9 Gen 1. Long wanted a 9mm PCC and this looks like the one I will get.
At the 2:16 part of the video there was a double fire (binary-ish) type of burst that was not from multiple trigger pulls per fired round. No one seemed to notice. I had to send my gen 2 back to extar for that reason. They said they fixed it but they didn't because it is still doing the same (binary-ish) double firing. I don't know what causes it but I believe it is dangerous. I will say it use to happen every 3rd or 4th trigger pull but since they serviced it, now it may happen twice with a 33 round mag loaded to half capacity. I had the gen 1 and never had that or any other issue with it. I wish I never sold it 😪. The gen 2 is flawed. Based on this video I'm sure I am not the only one going through this. Extar cant seem to fix it. Does anybody know what is causing it to double fire?
If I had to come up with one complaint, even though I wouldn't consider it a real complaint... The buffer and spring isn't noisy as hell, thought I was shooting a M16 A1!
I had a gen 1. The trigger was ace out of the box and it devoured anything I threw at it. Sad that I had to end up selling it. Might save up for a gen 2.
I know it might be a little bit of a sacrifice but you could pull the bullet on one of those venom rounds and see exactly what the weight is. If you have quite a bit of it and you really would like to know that’s always an option. Sometimes I use my dead blow bullet puller to see just exactly what is being loaded in factory ammunition in terms of powder and bullet type. I can usually get a good weight on rounds or at least close enough to know what they were going for. I say that because some bullets I pull can be off a few tenths of a grain in either direction. But just a suggestion.
@@GBGuns Yeah honestly it seems a little bit crazy!! If your going to put in all the effort required to load mass quantities of ammunition then at least take full credit for what you have produced. And now that you have actually pointed this out I don’t think I have seen any other ammunition in my years of shooting that doesn’t at least have the projectile weight listed. I know I have seen a few without velocity information but I don’t think I’ve seen any without bullet weight information. And if mocking them for failing at one of the least complex parts of loading commercial grade ammunition is more fun then I would stick to that cause you know why not.
Bieve it or not Fort Scott used to not kabel their stuff either. I pointed it out over and over and now they label. It's a running gag every year at SHOT show.
@@GBGuns Yeah that’s funny!! Well listen I really enjoy your content and have been watching it since you had less than 5k subscribers. Keep up the good work cause I really enjoy how you reach out into the firearms cosmos and procure some of these firearms that the average person doesn’t give consideration to when buying. You have a great niche, you have reviews for guns that almost no one else even considers reviewing and that’s awesome. The reason I say that is I have, only because of your channel, went out and actually purchased a couple of firearms that you reviewed and I have found out that some of these companies make really good guns that most people just don’t know about. So I purchased a Grand Power K100 and I love that gun it sits in my quick access safe right by my bed. It’s been a few years ago but you also turned me on to Tisas 1911’s and I have two of them now and they are awesome 1911’s that you can actually afford.
The only problem with the ep9 is that ots built so well that there really is no need to upgrade to the new generation. But when did I ever buy a gun simply based on need. Definitely getting a gen 2 as well.

Is there going to be an Extar EP9 tabletop review? Do you still plan on doing an accuracy test? Would be nice to see it go head to head versus a Stribog A3.
Has anyone done a side by side with all the "budget" AR9 style pistols? I am currently looking at the FM9, PSA PX9 and the extar. Can't find a comparison video anywhere.
I would like some advice for optics on this gun. Do you like red dot or prism? Do you like any magnification. I am searching for something between 100 and 150. I assume the rail on top is universal for most optics
The best budget red dot is the Sig Sauer Romeo 5. It can typically be bought for $100-$120. If you want a little nicer one you can get the Holosun 403r for $150.

I've never seen review where the scent of the fired round is described 😊....dig the Extar though, may soon be sitting between my FM9 and my FMmike45!!
Flawless performance you say... But for what you need this weapon?
Fun, self defense, fighting tyranny...
Thanks!
Looks like it passed the Smell Test.
Thank you for the varied ammo comparison.
I love mine. Put a cheap red dot and love plinking with it. 100% reliable but I only have about 400 rounds through it, so it’s not my home defense gun YET. But it will be.
now this is a video that i need, a comparison and trial of different kinds of mags that the ep9 can/may carry. i am considering this gun or the CZ p10c for my first gun!! nice video!
Got mine after watching honest outlaw. I have a ptr 9ct which I LOVE, but the extar is amazing for the $$. I like it almost as much as my mp5 clone
Thanks!
Thank you. I try to put out information people want to know, or at least should want to know.
Glad to see you tried the Extar EP9 and it did not disappoint. Cheers
Great video buddy. You just made up my mind!
Congrats! I vekueve that was a good move after trying this on the range. It really us a fun piece.
@@GBGuns I'm looking forward to having a little fun with it myself.
"Blinded by Science!" Cool shooter 👍 😎
Great review. I’ve had the same weapon for about two years now. It has been completely reliable (400 rounds or so), and is very user friendly. It has become my primary home defense weapon. I actually prefer it to my CZ Scorpion.
PS This was first view of your channel. Instant sub. 👍
@mmpatriot2170 thank you and welcome to the channel. You'll find a few hundred complete reviews in the library and most are part of articles. The articles have specs and more details and can be found in the pinned comment.
ETS 32 round Glock pattern magazines would be a lot of 🤩
It be cool to do a quick suppressed video with a couple different types of ammo just to give your impressions of how it performs suppressed. Looks fun!
I'd like to in the future. This this is so soft unsuppressed I bet it won't be bad with a can on it.
You are a awesome reviewer! You should have more subs. I love the dinner part of your reviews. It's kinda like the desert of the video. Keep doing what you are doing.
Thank you.
Good review. I ignored all the other mags because I only buy Glock mags. Thanks for doing!
Saying what each round smells like was new for me. Cool video
Haha, welcome to the channel. Commenting in aromas has been a crowd favorite, so we do it when it's notable.
Mine comes next week, great vid.
love my Extar and have had no issues with it at all.
Gen 2 with the Romeo5. My favorite gun I own and I own several!!
You guys just became my go to gun guys 👍
Not just because my initials are GB either haha
Thank you and welcome to the channel. We've got about 500 reviews so far. Check the pinned comment in our videos as most of them are part of a deeper-dive article. We post first to Patrons, then on our website GBGunsDepot.com, thirdly here on UA-cam.
Thank you for your information. I had heard with full magazine that came with was not feeding !
I have myself I was told by a friend of mine that ep9 is the most reliable and at the same time cheap he has not been wrong at all
I never thought I needed to know what each ammo type smelled like, but I’m glad I do 😂
Over the years several people have enjoy those "tasting notes", and sometimes it can be helpful like if you shoot at an indoor range. Some loads can have a rather nasty smell and indoors not only are you sorrounded by it, but you can leve smelling like it.
Let’s not pass up on the fact that they also manufactured Glock style mags that work.
Great review. You convinced me to get one and I love the thing!
Great review!
Great video, nice gun! Love the what's for dinner section. Nice to see the Extar handled it all.
Is the R9 a tight fit w/ the new MLOK handguard?
@@markrippt4677 I changed the original handguard for a aftermarket mlok and the direct thread works 💯!! It’s truly a pleasure to shoot. 9mm price sucks for now, but if I’m gonna throw $ down range, I might as well enjoy it 😏
@@joquin4618 Thanks man! The R9 looks brilliant. But I am thinking about a Rugged Obsidian 9. That way I can go long and short.
Only thing I'd like to see with this is a foldable brace option. If they had that I'd buy right now.
I wonder how that could be accomplished having the buffer tube poking out the rear? But yeah, it would be nice.
Love these want one glad a waited now I like the gen 2 upgrades, the forend and metal fire control group for sure.
Switching to metal for buffer retention was also a nice upgrade. Some reported the polymer one broke. Many spent extra buying a steel one from another company. So it was just another upgrade on the Gen 2 with no increase in price.
Best review ever!!! Subscribed.
Thank you and welcome to the channel. We've used this same format to review hundreds of guns.
Ty for your time and effort to make this video god bless
I love mine. Going on year 3
With a Gen 2?
@@GBGuns Not sure what gen she is.
And I believe he modified his gun, hence the brace issue. Can't blame the gun for at-home modifications.
@@GBGuns He did and admits the issue with the brace is on him in the video.
Did you mean to complain about the buffer being quiet? Is that bad?
I had a choice to get one of these or a freedom ordnance FX 9 I got the FX 9 and I don't regret it but wish I would have known more about the extar
I had a gen 1. The trigger was ace out of the box and it devoured anything I threw at it. Sad that I had to end up selling it. Might save up for a gen 2.
Thanks for the impressions
comment for algorithm gods.
Thank you!
Love it so far
Awesome review
Thank you
I know it might be a little bit of a sacrifice but you could pull the bullet on one of those venom rounds and see exactly what the weight is.
I've thought about it,but it's more fun to mock a company who doesn't label their ammo.
@@Painterrap Thank you very much, and I'm glad to hear you like your K100. As you know I'm a bit of a fan!
Trying to buy one for almost a week . site says currently unavailable .
The only problem with the ep9 is that ots built so well that there really is no need to upgrade to the new generation. But when did I ever buy a gun simply based on need. Definitely getting a gen 2 as well.
That is fast shooting impressive did you hit the target.
great vid ,thank You!
Very impressive for its price
Agreed!

So, you can't have a full magazine in the gun without having a chambered round?
As you see I’m firing 3 rounds, that’s what it’s holding 😂 LOVE IT!!!
UA-cam rules a reruthlessly, unpredictably, and unfairly applied. I have to do what I can to make it idiot proof for them. They recently deleted 65 of my videos for "facillitating the sale of a regulated good". I don't even sell stickers!
When will you have the lovely Mrs. give the EP9 a spin?
Between this and a PSA Dagger dropped into a carbine kit (roughly equal to the same price), which would you say is the best choice for home defense?
How does it compare to an mp5 or b&t apc9? I'm looking for a cheaper variation for my kids so they don't shoot my higher end stuff.
Good looking smooth operator weapon. Thanks for all you do! 🎩🎱🎯♠️🏁🇺🇲🇺🇦🌻🌸💮🌼🥇
Is there going to be an Extar EP9 tabletop review? Do you still plan on doing an accuracy test? Would be nice to see it go head to head versus a Stribog A3.
EP9 Tabletop: ua-cam.com/video/RM9oINmM9jY/v-deo.html
500 rds. zero issues. 🇺🇲
I like my EP9. Looks like I need to SBR stamp it .
It didn't ship with a brace on it.
New here , have you made any changes ? Are you still using this weapon.
Has anyone done a side by side with all the "budget" AR9 style pistols? I am currently looking at the FM9, PSA PX9 and the extar. Can't find a comparison video anywhere.
What is the diameter of the buffer tube? I would like to put a tailhook on it instead of that rubber brace. Thanks.
What don't you like about Extar's brace?
Farrow Tech makes an adapter and the parts you need.
5 star video
Can u please review UTAS ut9 !?? Thx for the vids
We'll see if they're interested.
Yep,their making some noise out there in UA-cam land. And in a good way. 🏆👀
