My favourite part is a lot of the really excited crowd reactions aren’t at the references, they’re just looking at the really impressive animation. As they should.
as the team behind it was probably already known by fans for the animation for DAICON III 2 years prior, those in the know must've been waiting for this one, and celebrating the fact that their expectations not only were met, but even surpassed

I mean, I had the same reaction when I watched this in 2010-something. I could not believe this was made by basically amateurs in 1983. It’s amazing to see people’s reactions to what would become literally one of the most important moments in not just anime history but the history of animation in general. One of the most incredible videos on this site no doubt
There were so many differences from the final product. * The entire projection (and the audio) is playing a bit slow, even though the film itself is definitely 24fps, so I assume they had technical issues with the showing. * During the retread of Daicon III, we hear _Noah's Ark_ towards its _end_ rather than its very beginning. * The followup track plays some 5 seconds later than in the final version. * There are moments during the heavy montages when they cut in with moving still frames of monsters or something, presumably because those sequences were incomplete. Upon closer inspection, they're not just incomplete-what does exist is actually animated differently from the final product, with assets flying here and there in a different order altogether. * All of the best money shots-the sequences which deserve to be labeled the best animation ever put to cel by 1983-are fully intact, indicating that they received a high priority. * The "all stars" flyover towards the end is somewhat shorter. * The computer-generated planets sequence is, conspicuously, in a very beta state and the sunrise which precedes it has not yet been animated, leaving a probably confusing moment of nothing happening. All this tells me they were probably cracking the whip clear until the day it was time to show the thing off. I could probably work up a remaster of this beta version of the soundtrack.
It's astonishing they were able to even get this out on time and from what I hear working nights in a rented out office building with the AC turned off.
@@tcvadomix Haha. It's a _bit_ slow. Really not even enough to account for a single frame per second loss. If it was 25% slow, the audio would be super slow and low and sound like a stab at vaporwave music. 😂
The unfinished bits might explain why both songs were sped up on the LD. Still didn't know that the LD version was different to what was shown in 1983... I learn something new everyday.
I've always want to say this half-year ago, thank you. My dream to see how the actual play in the convention now can be seen. Thank you for whom record this, for whom uploaded this to the internet. It's should be worldwide history of animation and comic culture, thanks again.
It's interesting how this version plays at about .9 the speed of the laserdisc version on youtube. You can actually get a better look at some of the faster moving scenes, like the macross bot getting shot by the missiles, the shot of her lifting the giant robot, and the sweeping shot of all the characters standing in a line up.
I honestly almost cried when I watched this for the first time, and I'm not much of an emotional person. I thought that this would never materialize, and that we could only imagine how these people reacted to one of the greatest pieces of animation ever created. This is quite possibly one of the greatest video discoveries of our time, showing everyone in that building being witnesses to the literal turning point of animation history.
Jeff Lynne is the singer of ELO, the band who performed Prologue/Twilight. I don't think he's ever stated/been interviewed about Daicon IV. However, Twilight was used w/ similar moments (swords, rails, etc) for a Japanese drama in 2005, so I'm guessing Jeff quietly acknowledges this.
This is a fundamental moment in anime' history. I feel humbled and grateful to have seen it secondhand! This influenced virtually all anime' made in the past 35 years.
I first saw the Daicon IV opening in a cam rip like this at a comic convention in 1984. No matter the format or the quality, the opening always gives me pleasant chills down my spine. Its really something special.
When I say I'm a fan of fandom itself, it's things like this that I'm talking about. Yes. Yes we are all spending time we won't get back in a fanatic domain. The passion that made this film happen - both the animation and this recording from in the room - that's something beautiful.
Literally, I've imagined something like this when discovered Daicon IV: "I wonder how they reacted when this was played for the first time? I do feel amazing, but I can't figure out how they felt watching this live" So glad that someone recorded!!! Fun fact: There are some images (starting from 4:16) that doesn't appear on actual Daicon IV restorations, some creepy monsters and other characters just after DC and Marvel scene. Maybe there are two versions, and the original uncut film played here, is lost(?
they kinda finished the morning the convention started, most likely they had those images as placeholders and only were able to finish it entirely after the fact, for the limited LD release
Thank you so much for uploading this, it’s great to know there was a raw reaction rip from 1983. Hearing all those con goers cheering, laughing, and commentating the whole thing has just brought tears to my eyes. Thank you
Interesting that the original played the whole ending segment of the song on the final frame while the VHS edited the song to end on the Daicon logo, this version also lacks the English spelling under the logo

It's interesting that the version we can find on UA-cam from LD rips differs just slightly from the one seen here. The words "DAICON IV" don't appear in the final frame with the convention logo and the Bunny Girl comes out for a bow here.
I noticed this too. And the sun slowly rises above the horizon in the laser disk version, whereas it just sits motionless above the horizon untill zooming out in this version

One thing I couldn’t help but notice was that the music sounds slowed down compared to the final version on UA-cam, which is interesting because the final version speeds up the original ELO sound slightly. I’m guessing the recording of this video might’ve caused the slowdown, but I can’t help but wonder if Daicon IV was meant to be slower than it is in the final version, which would’ve helped make the faces in the giant crowd scene at the end easier to see.
As this was played on the 8mm film projector, it possibly didn't have the precision digital timing control, hence the different speeds. We can also hear speed wobbles a little at the beginning. Most likely this isn't the camcorder's fault, because it has its own good enough timebase control, and the image overal is pretty stable (otherwise it would shake perceivably)
I vaguely recall in a separate video where someone mentioned that the LD rips on UA-cam might not be accounting for the playback speed differences between Japanese LD players vs. NTSC (?), or something to that effect, and are slightly faster than they're supposed to be.
