Buddy Holly - this is one of the people Don McLean was writing about in "The Day the Music Died", along with Ritchie Valens ("La Bamba") and others. Buddy is totally classic old rock. Listen also to "Peggy Sue" and any Buddy is great stuff. Jim Croce, SRV, John Denver, most of Lynyrd Skynyrd all died in plane crashes.

Patsy Kline is another great taken by plane. Early artist didn't just tour alone. Promoters would create entire show line ups and send them out by bus. These caravans could be out for months doing 4 or 5 shows a week. Early acts could be on the road hundreds of days a year.

Buddy was one of the first to write and produce his own music. Back in the day, artists sang songs from their record company's catalog. Buddy was revolutionary and could've 'repelled the British invasion' had he not died in 1959. A couple of my Buddy Holly faves (other than the most known songs) are True Love Ways, It Doesn't Matter Anymore, and Not Fade Away.

It wasn't just Buddy Holly's music that was such an influence on those that followed him. He was one of the first who wrote and performed his own music and the configuration of the band was an influence as well. The Crickets pioneered what became a standard R&R quartet: lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass and drums. The Beatles salute to the Crickets was right there in their name, one kind of insect for another. One of the best love songs ever was Holly's True Love Ways.

Not only did the plane crash inspire "American Pie" by Don MacLean, but this song is what he is referencing in the Chorus with:

and singing This'll be the day that I die..."

Buddy Holly was the Pioneer of rock and roll in '57 and '58 really bringing it from rock-a-billy to rock and roll. He pioneered the use of orchestra with rock for instance with "True Love Ways." Just one of his contributions. He was 22 when he died. Little known is that one time he had opened for Elvis Presley.

The line from "American Pie" "them good Ole boys drinking whiskey and rye singing this'll be the day that I die." was about this song. McLean was a huge Holly fan and wanted to memorialize Holly as the innovator that he was. That single line will forever remain an iconic reminder of a talent lost way to soon and fill our imaginations with what could've been.

Buddy's music relates even with today's music. His friend, protege, and band mate at the end was Waylon Jennings. Waylon started the Outlaw Country movement with Willie Nelson. Much of the rougher edged country today is direct from that making them third generation from Buddy. Buddy was one of the greatest innovators ever in either genre. Watch "The Buddy Holly Story" and you'll understand how great his impact really was.
P.S. Watch "La Bamba" as a follow up movie as it is the story of Ritchie Valens. Ritchie and the Big Bopper we're the other two artists on the plane with Buddy when it crashed in Clear Lake, Iowa.

Buddy Holly was the troubadour and pioneer who died at twenty-two years old. He only had eighteen months of fame. The following groups played his songs: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, Blind Faith, to name just a few. Each one of Buddy's songs is different from the next. He was one of the first rock and roll performers to write and perform his own music, use strings, double-track his voice, and use a variety of percussive tricks all in 18 months. He wrote the blueprint for rock and roll along with his contemporaries. Buddy was part of the FIRST class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. I would be elated if you reacted to "Well alright," "Everyday," "Early in the Morning," Listen to Me" or "It Doesn't Matter Anymore," and you will see how diverse he was.

The Beatles were HUGE Buddy Holly fans. Paul McCartney said: “I still like Buddy's vocal style. And his writing. One of the main things about The Beatles is that we started out writing our own material. People these days take it for granted that you do, but nobody used to then. John I started to write because of Buddy Holly. It was like, 'Wow! He writes and is a musician'.”

Elvis saw one of his earlier shows. He told Buddy he should get a drummer. This was the creation of the foundation of all rock bands today. They were the first to do rock with a drummer, bass and lead guitar and the lead singer. All rock and roll is based on the sounds this combo has to offer. Buddy was also the first to split mono in to stereo. So yes Buddy Holly and the crickets were the first rock and roll band. Then the day came when the music died. RIP love the voice.

"The day the music died" that you heard in Don McLean's "American Pie" referred to the day Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper perished in a plane crash. You did Los Lobos' version of Valens' "La Bamba", but you should also do "Chantilly Lace" by The Big Bopper. "Peggy Sue", "Oh Boy!" and "Maybe Baby" are other great Buddy Holly songs.

Buddy Holly really helped to pioneer putting guitar forward in Rock and Roll. His guitar playing was put up front on nearly every song and along with Chuck Berry, they paved the way for The Beatles to step forward with a guitar driven band, which led to Led Zep, which led to....on and on. Yes Buddy Holly is indeed a rock n roll pioneer.

That'll Be The Day came out in 1957, it was one of his early big hits. He was 22 when he died on February 3, 1959. He was on the Winter Dance Party tour, which was going through the Midwest. The tour buses that were being used were not properly equipped to handle the frigid cold and broke down so he decided to charter a plane to take him and his band to their next stop. Waylon Jennings, who was part of Buddy's band at that time gave up his seat to the J.P Richardson, aka the Big Bopper, who had the flu, and Tommy Aslup, the bass player gave up his seat in a coin toss with Ritchie Valens. The plane took off around 1am on February 3, but crashed about 5 minutes or so after take off, killing all 3 singers and the piolet instantly.

The double bass player was Joe B. Mauldin. I couldn't believe my eyes and ears when, about twenty years ago, we saw The Crickets play a wonderful show at the Assembly Halls here in Chingford, Essex in England. They were great, just getting up and playing for what seemed like two hours and featured many of the songs that Sonny Curtis wrote which were recorded by artistes such as Gene Pitney, e.g. I Fought The Law. Wonderful innocent times.

BTW, if I have it right, the guitar Buddy is playing - the Stratocaster - became popular after this performance. A ton of people who wanted to play rock bought one. This list includes Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and David Gilmore (Pink Floyd).

The Beatles were originally a cover band... their repertoire contained 100's of songs of all types. They learned different styles and sounds that they incorporated into their own writing and melody. The Beatles used techniques and progressions that they didn't find in sheet music and that no one else had done; they heard it in their heads and put it to sound on their guitars, piano, bass and drums. It made their music fresh and alive which was the power of their popularity. They were totally unique on the scene, from personal style to the sounds they made.
Guys like Sting saw them on the Ed Sullivan Show and said to themselves, "oh yeah, I can do that." School kids like Tom Petty, Duane and Greg Allman and others took over their parents' garage to learn to play music on the radio; most of the "rock gods" got their start that way and traveled a long road to achieve commercial success with their own sound and proficiency. The result were 3:00 minute masterpieces played on AM Radio to kids around the world. Later, "album rock" made inroads to FM stations that commercially catered to longer and more complex songs than the 3 minute Top 40 record spin.
Buddy Holley, Elvis, Carl Perkins, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis were a few of the rock pioneers that introduced the genre to a whole group of teenagers in the 1950's. Their little brothers and sisters heard these early records and were well primed to hear the "next step" by the time the Beatles came along in 1964.

The Beatles used to do at least 13 of Buddy's songs in their live shows, many of them can be heard on the Beatles' Anthology albums, their Decca audition album, and their Live at the BBC albums. They did a short snip of Maybe Baby in the Get Back Sessions that's showing on Disney+ right now. They recorded Words of Love for their first album. Paul owns the rights to all the songs that Buddy wrote. Another tie-in to the Beatles' name was that it was similar to the Crickets.

Buddy only released one album and a handful of hit singles before he died. But if you listen to all the songs he recorded that weren't released, you can hear that he was already interested in exploring the limits of this new musical form called rock and roll. Who knows how much more he had to give that we lost the day the music died. Fun story: when Elvis was first getting popular, you could book him to play a concert for $100 a night. So a promoter in Texas booked him to play five shows in five different Texas cities in one week - big money in the mid 50s. And at two different shows that week, two young men saw Elvis perform and decided to give music a try. Those two men were Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. We owe that concert promoter, and Elvis, so much.
