  • I love using Bangkok's canal river boats. However, is this the best way to explore little known areas in Bangkok? Let's find out! Join me as I hop on a Khlong canal river boat, pick a random destination, and go explore. The canal river boat taxis are one of the best ways to explore little known areas in Bangkok. They are extremely affordable and a fun way to get around. Today I will take you on a hapless journey to the Ramkhamhaeng area. I'll show you a few nearly abandoned malls, give a quick temple tour and explore Ramkhamhaeng University. I try to get into the Rajamangala National Stadium to view this giant open arena. This was another fun day where I had no agenda and just went out and explored a new (to me) area. I highly encourage you to explore random places when you travel, or even in your own backyard.

Indeed an interesting and fun way to move around BKK - I enjoyed such a ride on my way to Laos embassy in BKK (combination of water taxi and motorcyle taxi) a couple of years back, I was so cool and enjoyable experience I must say. I went to RU in 1987. There is no adminssion exams to attend this university. The tuition fee was only 18 baht for one credit, one subject is 3 credits, I took 8 subjects for a semester so it costed me around 500 baht for tuition. Students don't need to attend class if they don't want to but they have to pass final exams to earn credits. That made this university so hard to grauate because you have to be so much self-discipline. In the 80s to 90s, there weren't many universities in Thailand and more than 100,000 students attended RU that made this area so busy with dormitories, places to eat, and shops. Today, there are a lot of universities and colleges around the country which cause students don't have to come to study in bangkok. Now, the MRT orange line is being constructed passing in front of RU and will finish in a few years. Hopefully this area will come back alive again.

During my time at university That boat was my main ride on the trip. It's the best escape from the traffic on the road.
And if you get on the boat during rush hour, the crowd will be so crowded that sometimes you won't be able to put yourself in at all.
Looking back over 20 years ago What I hate the most about riding a boat is that the water in the canal smells so bad. There used to be arapaima fish that could not tolerate rotten conditions. It lifted the air on the surface of the water and floated like that.
In fact, today the water in the canal is still dirty because the development of the city is always quite contrary to the environment.

While BMTA non-aircon red bus is very cheap at 8 baht, it is relatively hot in humid Bangkok all year round. For those Thais who live along Chao Phraya River, there is an alternative. You can patronize Chao Phraya Ferry Service at price less than 20 baht or more for the longest distance. Cash only for fare. The service started about 50 years ago, using diesel engine to propel the boat. However, starting in 2020 there is a new competition of modern aircon electric boat service at a flat fare of 20 baht for all destinations. MINE Smart Ferry accepts Visa/Master Card card or you can buy fill-in card. Cash is not accepted. There is also an aircon electric tourist boat for 30 baht fare. You need to purchase a ticket before boarding a tourist boat. There is also an open-air top deck on tourist boat if you choose to face the weather and have a better view of Chao Phraya River and its environs. For crossing Chao Phraya River to the other side pier, the fare is cheap about 5 baht. However, there is a free ferry service to cross Chao Phraya River to IconSiam and AsiaTique to shop/dine.
BTW, there is also a boat service running along Saen Sap canal from the suburb to heart of Bangkok costing 8-20 baht depening on distance. It is much faster than the metro system for those who live near this canal which runs over 15 kms.
Recently the city govt BMA decided to resume free boat service at 4.5 km distance from Hua Lum Phong pier to Tewarat Market pier, not far from Chao Phraya river. The service starts 6-9 am and 5-7 pm Monday-Friday at 30 minutes interval. Sat-Sun and official holidays, 8.00-19.00 at 1 hour interval. ua-cam.com/video/m904dx1uSOI/v-deo.html

The boats have gotten a LOT easier to ride, a change from only three years ago (last time I visited was in 2020, right before COVID) - in the past you had to step over the gunwales to get into the boats - you ended up stepping on benches to get in and out. The seats were benches, during busy times you had to work your way from the inside to the outside of the boat. To my pleasant surprise, this time they've set up "entry ports" in the middle of the boats - you didn't have to step down onto the step on the platforms and over the gunwales to get on. Just step right into the boat. No more worries about getting your feet crushed or falling into the canal. My favorite place to visit by boat is Bobae Market, and also the Ramkhamkhaeng area (there's a table tennis gym there, part of the big stadium complex). 0:58 - WOW. All the years I've been visiting Bangkok and riding the boats, I've never noticed the river crossing platforms. I'll have to give those a try next time. If it's powered by the current, it's probably got some sort of angled vane underneath. If not there's probably a cable that pulls it overhead. As I said, I'm often in that area to play table tennis (get off at the Mahad Thai Pier), the main road is Ramkhamkhaeng Road. Other major attractions in the area are a fantastic night market (for me the attraction is a lot of halal food, this seems to be an area where there are a lot of Muslims) and the airliner graveyard (take the boat to the end of the line for that one). This area will become MUCH more accessible in the future when the Orange Line opens, and I'm looking forward to it. I've also used the local buses to get to the area - it is often cheaper than the river taxi, depending on whether they are air conditioned or not. Incidentally - if you're looking for a public toilet, the temples are a good place to find one (according to Walk About Wayne up in Chiang Mai). 6:55 - I think that's where the night market is (at night, of course). One interesting thing - if you go to the last stop on the boat taxi (Wat Sri Bunrueang), you'll notice, and little further on, ANOTHER pier and ANOTHER boat line that goes even further down the Saen Sap canal! I've always been meaning to take a ride on that to see how far it does (Bangkok Pat says there are electric boats that go up to Min Buri, but I wonder if there aren't other lines even further along). Whatever goes up that way isn't marked on Google Maps. If you look at Google Maps, the canal eventually meets the Chao Phraya river many miles east of Bangkok, I wonder if there are boat lines that go all the way up there. Also worth looking into (I haven't yet), at the Bobae Market pier, there's ANOTHER boat line that goes North-South - something I've got to try in the future. The boats look WEIRD - they're modern, probably electric. And there's another boat line I am aware of that goes up a canal on the west bank of the Chao Phraya.

The canal boats are a fun, fast, and cheap option to bypass downtown traffic but avoid the water mist made by the splashing boat. The water contains high levels of bacteria. You can end up with a painful strep throat and a cough for weeks, or worse. The middle section of the boat has the least mist.
