  • A super chapter from inside a coal loader in the state of Utah. This sequence is a look back from our DVD "Soldier Summit Reflection" a full length movie available at www.cspmovies.com
This release combines color film of the Rio Grande and the Utah Railroad shot nearly 25 years ago as well as fresh new material. The setting is the beautiful Wasatch Mountain range and its punishing 2.4% grades where helpers are a way of life. The town of Helper, Utah is still a stronghold for Rio Grande units with showcase helper action with sets up to seven units! Model Railroad News comments Charles Smiley Presents captures some of these moments from the past through heritage film, and contrasts those scenes with rail traffic of today in "Reflections on Soldier Summit." Tracking the evolution of the railroad through various avenues, his images convey the awesome territory that the Rio Grande conquered, and the brute force of the trains that did it. One of the hallmarks of the Grande was its use of huge helper sets of six, seven, or more six axle diesels, sinister with their paint soot-blackened by tunnel dwelling, prowling the twisting, turning rails.

patricknoveski we agree 100%, the Alco's are killer and our favorites too. Especially when they are engulfed in black smoke!

This takes me back to my youth when the alco’s ruled the Utah rails and walked to or looked out my window to watch them

Alco may have stopped locomotive production but they continued to produce the 251 series prime mover, so engine parts were still available. The electrical equipment was made by GE. Any issues there could have been handled at an electrical shop. Unless the GE 752 traction motors were heavily abused they were pretty much bulletproof. Had the internet been around when Utah sidelined the Alcos (and I had the resources) I would have known about it much sooner and would have tried to bring back the 307, the former CNJ 1611. I saw that engine many times on the old Lehigh and New England that ran through my town.
