6:41 the scoundrel is a trap in the sense that people will get distracted by the card draw and treasure, and ignore the fact that it's just a 2/2 haste with upside. 100% constructed playable imho.
I think Song of Totentanz is standard and pioneer playable. It's better than a fireball if you have something like Domri out to pump the rats. Then 5 mana makes 8 hasty power.
I'll definitively be playing Charming Scoundrel in my Haste Tribal deck. Curving a 1/1 + make a Treasure into Ognis and make 2 Treasures seems pretty deece, even if the Scoundrel dies on the swing you'll still have 6 mana on Turn 4 and can play the new Bargaining Hasty Dragon which sounds like a good time.
There's something about ramping from Charming Scoundrel to Redcap Gutter-Dweller... They deal with it, you have 3 1/1s... if there was a way to exploit that...
5:14 I think the treasure mode on Charming Scoundrel might be a bit better in Standard than you give it credit for just because there isn't another red Wily Goblin effect in Standard right now. 1/1 with treasure + upside has consistently proved to be Standard-playable with other cards like Prosperous Innkeeper and Courier's Briefcase. Charming Prince, on the other hand, was mostly only of interest because it loops with Yorion the same way Flickerwisp does. I'd probably play Riveteers Requisitioner over Charming Scoundrel most of the time, since in practice it does a lot of the same things on a much better body. I started messing around with Requisitioner after I saw you playing it in brew videos, and it has consistently overperformed for me in Standard and even in Explorer. 👍 Blitzing a Requisitioner at an Invasion of Gobakhan feels like cheating every time I do it. 33:42 Torch the Tower was never supposed to be in the same Standard with Voltage Surge. WOE was developed before they decided to extend rotation to 3 years.
Wild to me that he thinks scoundrel is bait. It's a 2/2 haste with upside in red. The other modes on this card are just gravy and maybe enable it to be played in other decks, like using it as ramp. Having another card hit for 3 on turn 2 after kumano is going to be huge.
It's actually a base 1/1 with an etb that could make it a 2/2. Also, if you pick one of the other modes, they have not been competitively played in Standard in the past like Wily Goblin. Plus, it has to outperform Bloodthirsty Adversary and Feldon.
@@jasonkorf7700 Yes. Which you will always chose, making it a 2/2 haste that deals 1 damage on the way out. Which is better than the current 2/2 haste mono red plays in 9/10 cases.
@robotdeniro-csgo5986 It doesn't beat out Bloodthirsty because Bloodthirsty in the late game allows you to cast a burn from your graveyard and is a base 2/2 with haste. It might beat out Feldon, however, since it is a base 1/1 instead of being a base 2/2, it could cause a potential blow out against Cut Down when coming in on chapter 2 of Kumano faces Kakkazan. Whereas Feldon and Bloodthirsty don't have that issue.
@@jasonkorf7700 Hence why is said 9 out of 10 times. Red getting to 5 mana almost never ever happens. Seeing bloodthirsty be cast at 5 is like a unicorn and people run that card that is baseline 2/2 haste in red is simply already good enough. If that 2/2 haste is doing an extra damage that puts it ahead on average.
@robotdeniro-csgo5986 That's the point, both Bloodthirsty Adversary and Feldon are both baseline 2/2's with haste with some upside. Charming Scoundrel is base 1/1 with haste that can become a 2/2 with haste with its etb. Had wotc made Charming Scoundrel a base 2/2 with haste with those options there wouldn't be a debate, but since they made it a base 1/1, there is a debate on whether it's a trap card or not.
I think if charming scoundrel had an extra point of power, we’d be talking. Too bad, would be a fun card to play with but at that stat line it’s pretty terrible
Yeah I wish Charming Scoundrel made the wicked role every time and then you pick between treasure or rummage. Maybe that would be too good but I don't think so. As is I find it pretty meh. Versatile but boring and weak.

I want to play it in a Jetmir deck with Devilish Valet + Jinnie Fae.
@@spetznaso9781 That's evil. 😈
I think the Toxic rat lord might be worth considering in Standard
Thanks for the reviews Jim. Always looking forward to dancing dude without music. We all feel like that on some days...
Jim, hope you have already queued that famous Kool & The Gang chorus for the soundboard
Imodane doesn't even work with blasphemous act =(
Grabby Giant is also kind of interesting because it ramps into itself Play the spell on turn 2 and the giant on turn 3
I think Embereth Veteran could have some hypothetical upside in standard buffing an evasive creature (phoenix chick)

Totentanz is german and means dance of dead :)
It is pronounced Toe-ten-tonth, like month with t and the stress is on the first syllable :D
Thanks Mr. Jim I have been waiting for your inputs and thoughts for the New Set.
Slap curiosity onto Unruly Catapult and have fun drawing an extra card every turn!

I'm gonna try so hard to make Food Fight work with the mopey DMU Karn who generates Powerstone tokens.
just go with Visions of Phyrexia
I think Charming Scoundrel is at its best in Big Red. Also it triggers Celebraiton on its own with a Treasure.
If stonesplitter bolt was x+2 to a creature or planeswalker, and bargin also deal x to any target, would it be good, or busted?
Gnawing crescendo is sweet. Good aristocrats card as well.

Wily Goblin didn't see play in Standard when it was Standard legal.

Battlegarb going in slicer 😊 edit: monstrous rage also going in slicer in place of brute strength
Virtue of Courage has big Experimental Frenzy energy though without a Runaway Steam-Kin it's probably not going to be nearly as good in its formats.
witchstalker frenzy going to make my boros convoke happy
Rdw may be a dark horse in standard
Wow, Flare got a power creep!
Also the Ranger has a bow and doesn't have reach?!?! Dammit bowmaster you're ruining it for everyone
I think Food Fight + Charming Scoundrel and Voldaren Epicure is a thing.
I think more towards Powerstones like Visions of Phyrexia since the powerstone can pay for half the sac-cost
