We BUILT An UNBELIEVABLE Driver Out Of A $700 Ford Bronco II

- It's ALIVE!! It took an extra day to wait on one final part to allow the Holley Sniper to control the ignition timing (you don't have to install it like this if you want a mechanical advance) but it was so worth it! The carb life is no more for the $700 1984 Ford Bronco II with a 2.8 that struggled to get out of it's own way. Now the throttle response is modern, it starts hot or cold, and fuel mileage should increase from the 12mpg it was seeing before. We took it out for a drive and not only does it feel like a usable truck, it's only a second off of the original 1/4 time on a prepped track with no load and only a driver. We need to get this to the track and smoke the record!

it's amazing how much people that have never touched a wrench and just watch youtube know better then people that are actually doing it...
Top response to this video.
pretty much why I stopped making videos.

@@_RiseAgainst Exactly.
This Bronco, for instance, clearly needs a different color engine. Maybe blue - or gold! Yeah, gold. That would make it go super fast.
@@Ingens_ScherzI say K-LS 20 swap it with a double clutch. If not your basically driving a huge vagina around.
JR said, "I'm gonna set it to one!," and I heard, "I'm gonna send it to Juan!" I just figured that Juan was really good at tuning.
A dependability issue with Holley distributor is that the crank sensor wires need to be shielded. If you didn't throw out the shield from wiring harness. I recommend that you use it on that crank sensor.
It’s great to see Josh and Gabe back in the posts two class act friends!!! Happy Memorial Day to you guys too!!! from a British Infantry vet (10 years) 👍👍👍
Overnight Part from USA is always a win! ... Overnight parts from Japan...only for Vin Diesel and Paul Walker
I always liked those bronco 2’s. Makes me miss my old 86 ranger.
Made me miss my 86 ranger as well!
Now seeing that you can make them some what driveable with today’s cars I would totally own one, I’d do the exact same thing to make it have some throttle response and actually use the engine it has vs make lots of noise but barely move lol
Me too.... but those bronco 2s flip over easily
@@overthehillsandfaraway1889That’s bull . Lol
My son and I have had all the SUV’s that Ford made “Except” the Bronco II. So we are on the the look out for one of these beauties. Keep up the good work guys!
Ford maverick new truck ew
@@AlejandroP1980s I wouldn't classify that as a truck. More like an import compact car with a bed on the back.
None of the 2.8L engines were fuel injected, only the 2.9L was fuel injected. some of the other changes were that they went to a timing chain set from a timing gear set. they also improved the heads so they were less likely to crack. they also went from solid lifters to hydraulic lifters. and of course the 2.9L had multi port fuel injection where as all 2.8L engines were carbureted.
they were junk like most V-6's from the 80's. My stepdad had an '84 two-toned brown, 5-speed, 4x4. He put dual exhaust on the 2.8 lol. I loved that thing when it was running. The 4x4 did really well in snow too.
Ok, you convinced me that the Sniper EFI really is easy.
Love watching your Bronco project. I have two 1989 B2's, love them both. One is for wheeling with a 4.0L the other has a 2.3L turbo out of a 88 Turbo Coupe. Not to mention they look great....Go Bronco II.
Awesome! You guys are a great team! I really enjoy watching you guys work together! I wonder how many old motor homes would benefit from that Holley kit. Keep up the great projects!
Never stop doing what you do man. Thanks for the videos, always entertaining and informative.
10:53 "It does feel awesome." That ceiling liner: -.-
Yea but tut he liner has nothing to do with performance
Replacing the head liner is simple. lol
@@that1guy82 he didn't say it performed great.
You guys are always inspiring and bring a and affordable ways to fixing cars. I have a bronco II and now I want to add this new lease on her life.
Second the comments on the 2.9L MPFI, had one with a 5 speed in my old Ranger back in the day. No torque but great throttle response and would pull to redline with no complaints, and took a beating without breaking a sweat. Love the old Bronco2/Ranger projects like this.
So I have been rebuilding one of these with my youngest daughter for the last year (literal return a derelict to near new and replacing everything from axles to carb to sending units to wiring) - Also an 85 with a late 84 production date. I get moving to fuel injection, but will state that replacing the carb with a brand new new and correctly tuned carb does damned near the same thing, provided the original sensors are working properly. I will also say that once these things are running properly, they are an absolute ball to drive.
2:24 Love the real burl oak dash - just like a Rolls Royce
Man, that's an amazing change! I had an '84 2.8 back in the day and it couldn't get out of it's own way. Holley Sniper for the win!
You dont have to defend nothing buddy! You and Josh do what you want! I think all you do on your channel is awesome! people are gonna hate no matter what! its your thing do what you wanna do! by the way the shop looks great! looking forward to the next Video adventure!
I had a 90 bronco 2 Eddie Bauer. I miss that truck. It was my first automobile. Love what your doing
Congrats guys. Great job. My mom bought a Bronco II brand new. Remember it well.
I love it! That is exactly what I want to do (with a manual transmission of course). I dig it!
84 production date is 85 model.
Sometimes.
Thanks for the content.
That was a time when September was the new model year unveiling.
California model? They used to have different requirements in state
Keep doing what you do guys.. Advance it's the only way to go in life!!👌🏾 love the Bronco!!!
Good to see you’ve given the old bronco a new lease on life. Hope it proves to be reliable.
I cant believe people argued about the year.. That is indeed an '84, the steering wheel is a dead giveaway.. '85-'88 had a different two spoke wheel.
also all 2.8s ('84-'85) were carburated, and 2.9s ('86-'90) had port fuel injection...
I had an '86 Eddie Bauer Bronco II with the 2.9L EFI and a 5-speed manual. Powertrain was awesome. Body rusted away to nothing. But I miss that truck to this day.
Love this! Man, I'd love to do this to my '67 Mustang once she's restored.
It's awesome to see it purr like it should!
Those B2 are really cool. Dad had 2 and I learned to drive on them.
Im actually going to restore one as a daily driver and put the progress on UA-cam as soon as I get some shop space
I’m getting mine on Tuesday to daily
Awesome build!
Really cool, my dad had an 84 also. Rotted out unfortunately and went to scrap. Still ran, manual. Glad to hear the starters all sound like crap!
My dad bought one brand new when I was a toddler. It was black and gold with a wsu shocker sticker on it. Probably got it at rusty eck
What a perfect color scheme 🔥
JR it's funny...I was talking to my dad about all of the SUVs he's owned over the years and his 1984 Bronco II XLT was his favorite. I do miss that thing as a kid.
Great job and great video!
Nice job, guys.
Great job gentlemen
06/84 meant it was a 85 year model back in the day when I was a bodyman
10th digit of VIN is E, so it is definitely a 1984. Unless it is a 2014, which is the other year for the E year code.
Nice work
That throttle response was amazing 😲🔥
Had an ‘86 Ranger 4x2 with the 2.9L and a 5 speed. That wood grain dash sure brings back some memories...
Awesome man
You need to adjust those valves, they’re mechanical
Sniper for the win. Good job guys.
Nice! please keep the improvements coming on the B2
There’s more on the way! 💯
That motor is pulling so strong now …..well done 👏🏻👏🏻
I got the same setup for my 84 bronco. I’ve got a 460 big block and it always struggled a little with starting. Sniper is the key! Just wait for the fuel pump to finish its pregame routine before you turn the key and boom!
I had a MK2 ford Granada with the 2.8 cologne, it had Bosch k jet. 148bhp, lovely engine extremely smooth, good sound, very very tough but extremely thirsty!
Love the Bronco II. I owned several when they were selling them back then. At one time I bought my wife and myself both matching Bronco II's. My dealer gave us a great deal on a pair. Would love to come across a clean one today to fix up as a daily driver.
Am really looking forward to hear about fuel economy, performance and reliability improvements.
I’m surprised why more UA-camrs don’t do more EFI Conversion.
Really nice Bronco.
I had an '85 Ford Ranger with the 2.8. I know exactly what y'all are talking about...that thing was a DOG, but I LOVED it! Wish I still had it.
The side x side looks awesome. Can’t believe how good the purple looks.
had an '86 Eddie Bauer Bronco II with the 2.9. For what it was, it ran pretty strong - it was a nice little daily.
Love your videos John, your content is awesome 👏
I’m not a huge bronco fan but it’s always fun watching you do work on your cars. You inspire me to take my projects to the next level
definitely an improvement
I am putting one of these on my AMC 304 in my CJ6. Cannot wait.
I predict he hardest part of the install will be finding a power source for the pink wire
Holly Sniper is a great product!
It is a definite improvement, it sounds far better than I would have ever expected! I kind of wanted to do a 4.0 swap into one for a while.
I'm actually planning a 4 litre swap in mine. It's plug n play but it'll need a new ECM for sure to run.
The 2.9/4.0 is a whole different critter despite them sharing a base block. I loved my 4.0 OHV 5 speed 4x4 93. I want it back.
No need to defend yourselves guys you are doing great work and creating entertaining content in the process!
I have three of these and have been into them for a while. Never seen a fuel injected 2.8 from the factory. My 1985 had a computer controlled carb,, but not injection.. I fully plan to Holley sniper the 2.8 we have knowing that when the 2.8 gives up, the kit will work fine on the 5.0 that will replace it.
Hay I had a 84 bronco 2 with a 2.8 v6 and it was the only motor like it in the world back in 1992 my dad that is a high performance machinist took it and bored it 75 over and put chevy 305 pistons in it it had roller rockers and a high performance cam and crank loved loved that truck
I had one of these a few years back and it was my (and my girlfriend's) favorite. It was a white bronco ii 1990 with a 2.9, but it blew a head gasket or cracked a head. I tried to fix it but it just kept leaking coolant into the oil just like before. I've been trying to find it ever since to fix it properly now that I have the time. I found it for sale once, but by the time I had seen it, it was already sold and the seller wouldn't tell me where it went. We have a lot of memories tied up in that silly little truck and I miss it like crazy, but now I have a 1989 Bronco which is my pride and joy. I'd still love to find it again because my girlfriend has wanted her own ever since.
"Upgraded to running and driving like a normal car". Now that sounds 100% realistic.
Nice job really interested in the Holley Sniper after watching you and Vice grip garage.
She looks great, brought up to date. Enjoy the Gold Medal Edition Bronco II Josh.
good thing the ceiling liner is in great shape!
The 1984 and 1985 Bronce IIs all came with the 2.8L carb engine. It was just an electronically controlled carb, reason it had an Ecu. I had a 84
I like Deutsch connectors or metripack for smaller signal wires like that. Weatherpacks are so bulky
Seems fine
You have a great show
You can't beat those old Bronco II's!
I had a 88’. It was my first vehicle. Never had enough power to get out of its own way but it would go anywhere in the mud and snow
Had one 25 yrs ago and was always impressed with the v6 it would smoke so.e tires!!!
My buddy we with FiTech on his 71 monte used holly first but had faulty comp sent back got 2 fitechs for the same price, he loves it
Buddy of mine in high school had a bronco 2. It was a blast lol
Watched this and now I have to go watch the Healey first start in 10 years. ✌
Just bought a 79 Mercury Capri with the 2.8L V6 for a daily driver, and I'm definitely doing that. I was thinking of going 4bbl with an Offenhauser intake, but the intake alone is worth as much as the Sniper EFI...Since I mostly want drivability and ease, the few HP gain from the 4bbl aren't worth the trouble and price.
I hope to find some nice headers later, but these aren't common.
You’ve convinced me to put sniper EFI on my Scout and my Jeep now
litterally my favorite vehicle if all time
Always wanted to convert my Darts factory 318 to fuel injection but never found a deal on the early stuff available back when I was daily driving it. They don't always make more power but the drivability is so much better and smoother. I compromised with a 9800 aftermarket Thermo Quad with a electric choke. Super smooth, makes power, and sounds awesome when the secondaries open. Most folks hate them but if you understand how to adjust them and find jets they are set and forget. Maybe someday when I resurrect it I'll try finding a decent fuel injection set up if I don't say screw it and drop in a 5.7 Hemi...
The next 3 things to do are:
1) remove and throw away the crankshaft driven fan/clutch, then replace it wit a fresh water pump and 15"electric fan.
2) adjust the valves.
3) really feeling froggy, get a performance valve job 1st ..)
JUST DO IT!!
Holley EFI
Jensen Tape Deck
Sketchy Tires
Yup... Makes sense...
Now this is what I like!
You can bounce the front end off the ground with the break and gas. I used to do it just to trip people out but that one may have a better suspension on it than mine did but I still loved that thing. Oh yeah if the fuel pump is in the tank on yours, make sure you keep at least a quarter of a tank in it or it will burn up fuel pump after fuel pump.
The Mk1 FORD Capri also had a 2800 Essex V6 option, if you can find em, there was a 4 barrel intake available, cams and headers...Imagine that combo fuel injected in a little rear drive sports car.
My first car, 71’ Capri. Wold love to have it now and do this conversion.
@@robertbeirne9813 I had a ‘74 with the 2liter, 4speed manual. Those clips holding the shifter linkage arm’s I had issues with...in hindsight I could have probably modified those with rod end and have em bolted on solid with no play..
Congrats on getting it running! I agree with your assessment on the build date 06/84 translates to an 84 model. Most auto manufacturers shut down their assembly plants at indeterminate dates but typically around summer for traditional fall or following winter new model introduction. June 1984 would be typically a tail end 84 production or an early 85 model. The VIN number has the final say on the model year.
Mine was manufactured 04/83 it was marked a 1984 model
That sticker's great as long as nobody's changed that door! Verify with the dash vin. Worked in junkyards for 30 years, never saw an injected 2.8
I would have to see the title before I believed it was an 84. A June build date can be 84 or 85. Either way I love seeing an old truck kept on the road.
Year code is E. It's a for sure 1984.
Jesus, the UA-cam Couch mechanics are out in force. The VIN is right there. 1FMCU14S1EUD60294. It's a 1984.
@@sigmahyperion955 you are a delightful person. I didn't think about running the vin after a 14 hour work day. But keep on being a prick.
Most 1985s were 2.8 carbs also, pretty much identical to the 84s lol
Personally I think anything that goes out of the way to keep mostly original equipment and put old rigs like this into potential daily use again is a great thing. It makes them more tunable, more fuel efficient, and also makes them more appealing to those who might enjoy the styling and feel of an older vehicle but isn't really into tuning a carburetor or unclogging a stuck injector every time the wind changes. Keep doing what you do and remember comments help the metrics so let the haters hate... keep up the good work @watchjrgo
I purchased brand new, a 1985 Ford Ranger 4x4 with the 2.8 V-6. It was factory equipped with quasi fuel injection. Which essentially was an electronic carburetor. I know because I removed and replaced it one day for a reason that now escapes me.
Listen I didn't see any subscribers in the wrenching on those cars. You do what you feel is right for you. You have to live with what you build, and that's why I like mid-west you-tubers because not only the personalities but the more realistic builds. You and your buddies Josh and Gabe, VGG, Junkyard Digs, Dylan,Thunderhead and even crazy Tyler Hoover make you-tube great again.
I love this car now 💖 very well done 👍
9:47 - EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!!!
JRGO I want to see more of this BII
Awesome!
Another great vid 👍
Watch it start right up. Not that time. Now. Wait, that was just a test. Now, I mean now. That didn't count. I had my fingers crossed. But now its gonna start right up. OK now. Now. Now. Goddammit
I’m the next episode of WatchJRGo: fixing the wind sail of that roof!
Great video!! Add an MSD Ignition box, split fire plugs and an MSD distrutor. 25-30 more hp. straight H Pipe mustang exhaust another 30 you’ll be T 240 Hp with all the mods
If he was going to do that he should buy the hyperspark stuff since it's still sniper controlled and it's basically msd with sniper logo since Holley owns both.
And he will probably have to, those Holley coil drivers don't seem to last long.
