    Interesting video! But the original roots didn’t really look “rotten” - they just looked seriously dried out, which is understandable when there’s only a small block of water-holding moss at the center and the rest is dry bark. Retail orchids often die when they get home because the nursery mixes are almost purely moss, the roots are root-bound, and well-meaning but inexperienced buyers water too often. Orchid roots need air their entire length and humidity, not wetness. Some roots will grow sub-substrate and some will be ‘aerial,’ or above ground. When I buy an orchid, the first thing I do is remove it from the pot, finger out and discard all the mix, cut off whatever’s truly rotten (mushy roots that can be smeared off to exposed their threads inside), rinse it under my tap, shake it off, then repot in an orchid pot (with many side holes for air) that’s just slightly bigger than the store’s, with my own fresh substrate. I use an orchid bark mix and very thinly layer my own special moss every inch or so to add structure. I don’t put moss on the surface. Really, I the moss is almost notional. I water it all, and am careful to wick off any water that falls into the crowns of the leaves. Radical trimming and transplanting, which this is, is extremely traumatic to the plant. It will take a long time to adjust, so near-term expectations must be low. After that, I err on the too-dry side and don’t water until the moss seems dry to the touch. Only after a few months do I add an orchid fertilizer. Worst case, all the flowers might fall off, but they’ll return the next season. I’ve actually found my orchids love to go dormant over winter, with only occasional misting.

      Yes, but when we need to repot an Orchid we do it immediately after flowering. The plant requires a lot of time to get used to the change, and it may not bloom the following year if it is too close to the season.
      Moss (sphagnum) is not recommended. It brings nothing and it is acidic. Some Orchids do not appreciate this acidity.
      The bark should not be too fresh, it contains essences, terpenes that must have evaporated, Orchids do not appreciate.

      Having doubts, I spent a lot of time checking the presence of polyphenols (like it is says) in white rice: there are none at all. In fact, most plants contain more. Tea contains a lot of it, it's known, but... it's in dry weight! All colorful plants are rich in it too.
      There is no need for vitamins either because plants synthesize them, in fact they are not vitamins for them.
      In terms of mineral salts, white rice is not very rich and almost nothing passes into the water, especially without cooking.
      I think that if the technique works, it would be as effective without anything, because the simple act of removing ALL the dead parts, changing the substrate, keeping it moist and airy, in the light, is effective.

    Wow dramatic results and quite fast. Congratulations to you. The plant was a total mess, but now healthy and vigorous. Years ago I had a 25 yr. old phaelenopsis that developed rot in its crown and lost all of its leaves, leaving only a dry stump. The 'local Experts' told me it was lost, but I kept it and watered regular and in 8 months it came back and lived for another 10 years. Thank you!

Sadly they all lost their flowers quite fast, not liking where I'd put them...they didn't grow new spikes last autumn, and I'm wondering what I can do to get them to do so this year. They're in a room now where they will experience a drop in temperature soon as it's starting to get colder at night (Ireland). Day temps are still going up to 20 some days but dropping at night now. What else should I do to get spikes?
    My sister in law keeps her house much warmer than I do, and her orchids which are by a frosted window with no direct sunlight FLOURISH, always flowering - but I don't have a similar spot, sadly.

    I’ve read that you should repot the orchid as soon as you bring it home. None of the UA-cam videos show orchids repotted when they have flowers on it. I’m confused. Should I repot it now or wait for the flowers to die and fall off?

    • @sleepyjoness
      @sleepyjoness Місяць тому

      I would wait for the flowers to die, as they might not survive a repotting.

    Helpful video but a narrative would have been appreciated as well. How long did you soak those roots? What was that moss-like ball you pulled out of the root system? Was it part of the plant or did someone put moss in the pot? Thank you for the garlic idea. Definitely trying this

    Hello, I enjoyed your video. Will for sure try this. Question. I have had this orchid for 2 years. Put it in our bathroom and it bloomed this last month 7 blooms beautiful Pink and yellow. It was looking heavy so I moved it to support it and the whole thing broke off. :( Lesson learned to leave it alone. LOL Do I trim the plant where it broke off 2 nodes back? Is there any way to preserve the blooms? I put them in water but they are starting to wilt which I know they will but they are so beautiful I wanted to make a bookmark or something, Anyone know how to preserve the color?
    Thank you!

    Will Brown Rice work just as well?

  • @1Serval
    @1Serval 7 місяців тому +7

    Really. You show us a dead brown one, then you insert a GREEN one in the rice water. Right. That's magic.

      It was the same one after washing & resting while preparing the next step. When you saw it first they were removing all the dead leaves & roots. After that when dry it was brown, then some green appeared after washing the live roots.

      Alive roots turn green with water. I usually make them wet before cutting, then I see which ones are alive still
