I think the reason it can't pan further downward is because it was possibly more likely designed to be mounted upside-down (the flat part mounted to the ceiling, with the dome pointing downwards). From your video it seemed as though it was able to pan waaay further "up", but if it was on the ceiling, this would be "down". It makes sense when you think about it, b/c if it was mounted to the ceiling, u wouldn't want it to pan more towards the ceiling, but rather down towards the room and the floor. Just a thought, what do you think sir?

Thanks for the video. I have just set up my 8412B and had to set it on the ceiling due to the low horizon value. That was simply enough, though.
What I do have a question about it the 2-way talk.
I have it working but I find that the speaker symbol (audio in) needs to be shut off before I can use the audio out to talk from my cell phone to whomsoever is on the camera end. If I don't do this, the feedback loop is bad. I thought push-to-speak could take care of this, but am I doing something wrong?

    I have a few questions:
    1. Does this shoot video as if it was a trail camera, as in doesn't it record a set amount of video once motion is detected?
    2. Does it shoot a continuous strain of footage and for how long?
    3. How much continuous footage can be recorded onto a 64GB SD card?
    Thanks!

Thanks for making this very nice review. This is how you show off/review a camera! Seeing is believing and there are far too many "reviews" out there that just don't show off the end result: the damn image coming out of it! ;)
Quick question though: I'm looking to see if I can connect XSplit (or even OBS) over the network to it. Does it support RTSP in the configuration options at all? I would be surprised if it didn't, especially for simply connecting VLC to view it.

Hi again & thanks for the previous info. I have a few more questions. I purchased the two cameras, the IP2M-841 & plan on buying more, including the two or three outdoor cameras.
Question 1: Do you use the Amcrest NVR or have any experience with the NVR? I’m debaiting on buying the Amcrest NV4108 1080p (8CH 1080p/3MP/4MP/5MP) Network Video Recorder or just using the micro SD cards.
Question 2: On the back of the cameras (as well as on the NVR) there is ports for an external alarm. Amcrest seems to dodge the question from multiple people who have asked the question of how does the external alarm work & what alarms or sirens work with the cameras & how do you set this up?
Question 3: I like all the whistles & bells with Amcrest but am considering returning the two that I bought & just buying the Arlo Q & maybe two Arlo Pro’s. I like that Arlo has IFTTT & the software seems to be user friendly. Any thoughts on comparing Arlo to Amcrest?

      1. Have a 1080p Amcrest NVR. If you have an idea how to handle the cables or have a drop ceiling, it'll be a good option. I like also use their IP camera with microSD card for situations where I don't want to hard wire.
      2. My home security system doesn't support the external alarm connections so haven't tried it.
      3. I reviewed the Arlo 1080p one and loved it. But, I haven't tried accessing Arlo's core function using other means. Currently only used Arlo with Arlo software. I stopped using Arlo because it would have been complicated for my setup. I like to 1 NVR with multiple brand of IP cameras.

Hi hamster after more than a year of researching this camera, I finally got this. So far I love this camera, but I can't seem to figure out how to get this to record in continuous mode on to a Micro SD card. So far it's been recording under motion/alert and the recordings would cut off when an event is still in motion. Can you guide me the step by step to get this to record continuously in a loop like a car's dash cam. On the PC web app plug in, I went to setup/storage/schedule/setup/ and check off all box for everyday, and check off general for all 6 period, but when I tried to save, it failed to save. What am I doing wrong?

AH, thank you for the great review! I have been looking at this camera for a little while now and almost ready to pull the trigger but I have one question: when two cameras are connected to the app on your device, can you HEAR both of the rooms at the same time? And when your device screensaver is on, does the app sound still run in the background? We want to use these cameras as monitors for our kids' rooms, so full time sound (or sound detection) is important to us, especially at night since they are on a different floor of the house than us. Any insight you have will be much appreciated!

    • @AwkwardHamster
      @AwkwardHamster  7 років тому

If you have the app set to view multiple cameras at the same time, you'll hear audio only the window that's highlighted.
If my smartphone's screen shuts off I don't hear audio. Not sure about screensaver since I don't use that on my smartphones.
For my kids rooms, I use an audio baby monitor. For me, the audio baby monitor is still most reliable. These IP Cameras are fancy and convenient but doesn't replace my audio baby monitor.

Yes, the IR LED lights are visible. I would suggest placing it at least 5 feet from the child. No indication it's bad for the child but any closer and you won't be able to see a clear image.

    Mike here's a FYI on the IP2M-846 . . .
    ByAnthony Garciaon February 13, 2017
    Verified Purchase
I have purchased several (GOOD) cameras from Amcrest, so when I saw this I was quick to pick one up. First thing to say is that this camera is quite a bit bigger than their other PTZ cameras in the same class.
I was a bit surprised by the size (see picture), but the fit and finish are just fine. Just be ready for this one to not be as "Stealthy" as it smaller cousins. But size is not really the issue...the problem is with how the camera zoom and auto-focus work.
For some inexplicable reason, the camera constantly will zoom and refocus on it's own without any input from the user. There are several settings in the camera setup, but none of them seem to fix this issue. And I've searched for updated firmware, but so far no luck. The picture quality is good, with nice colors and sharpness, and the PTZ controls are responsive. It also works very well with Blue Iris so no issues there.
The other quite disturbing problem with this camera, is the noises it makes. When you Pan/Zoom/Tilt the camera, it will make a quite audible high pitched whining sound, that continues to raise in pitch almost to the point where you think it might "Pop" or burn out.I'm still deciding whether to return this camera or not...but hopefully this information will help others who are on the fence about it. I would stay clear if I were you.

Hello, Thank you for your excellent review. I purchased this camera based on your review but I was curious if you had any issues with the iOS App and IE browser connection? The connection seems to drop often and it takes me several minutes resetting the view in order to get the image back online. I am not sure if you had similar problems. In addition, I was trying to use a secure connection with HTTPS:// but whenever I do this, I get an error stating "there are not enough resources". From what I can tell, the hardware is excellent but it is hampered by software issues or glitches.

Hi. I think the ios app has been more stable then the android app. I'm using Samsung S7 and app crashes about one a week. Always figure it was Android. It has been stable for us too. And we keep IE open often to watch grandpa.
If I had drop connection issues, I would check if my video quality was set too high for my Internet or my router cannot handle it. Also, check if I am running the latest firmware.

Great review! Any chance of doing a comparison between the Amcrest ProHD 1080P and the Foscam 9826 960P? I know the former might have more impressive specs, but the latter is still rated as Foscam's 'top of the line' device, and lately they have been having sale after sale on the Foscam 9826PB.
Perhaps clearing inventory before a new Foscam model is released? They just released a 2MP FI9900p outdoor camera, but are still in the 1.3MP category for PTZ cameras.

Yes. But just what I can afford. Started with Buffalo because it was inexpensive. Moved to a more premium NAS after Buffalo told me I couldn't swap out hard drives. Don't know why they even bothered calling it a NAS.
I have the QNAP TVS-463 and it has HDMI out. In a small space, like an apartment, it worked out great because most of my electronics were in 1 room anyway. In a home, I found it easier to use Roku or other TV box to stream video from the QNAP. QNAP and TVs are not placed in the same room. It was a challenge to run an HDMI cable to a separate room so wireless was the easier solution.

+AwkwardHamster need your help on this, I really want to get this camera but I am unsure about its effect on internet speed, I don't want something that consumes a whole lot of bandwidth or anything that slows down my already slow internet. Can you tell me if this camera has an adverse affect on my home's internet connection?

    • @AwkwardHamster
      @AwkwardHamster  8 років тому

Hi. higher the bitrate, the more bandwidth it will consume. Let's say your home internet is 50Mbps up and 50Mbps down and you're using a 802.11n wireless router. I don't think you'll have an issue.
But if your internet is 10Mbps up and 3 Mbps down and someone is watching Netflix, viewing the camera in that network may be fine but it may not for external traffic.
Now let's say you got this 1080P and you only plan to view it from a smartphone or tablet when you are not home. In that case, you san set it so viewing from a smartphone will use a sub video stream instead of the main video stream. The main being 1080P and the sub can be low quality setting you like. That way, you won't consume too much of the bandwidth.

How well does the camera work when you are trying to view video when you are outside your home and not on your wifi network? Does the camera connect quickly and does it stream in high quality? Do you have to do anything special forwarding ports on your router? Do you have to pay for some sort of cloud service just to view a live stream? The Amcrest webpage right now says the free tier only allows you to view 2 hours of video a month for free.

    • @AwkwardHamster

Streams live well over cellular network. I demonstrated it here ua-cam.com/video/9-KDg4hvbpA/v-deo.htmlm52s
Let's say you do not want to use Amcrest app to view the camera and want to use a 3rd party app, then you have to create port forwarding rules on the router. Creating port forwarding on 1 router is not difficult. Difficultly increases when you have more routers.
There are account issues preventing my ID from logging in to the Amcrest Cloud website. They built Amcrest Cloud on top of a previous cloud website I had an account with and my ID hasn't transferred over.

    Have a few questions:
I'm planning on purchasing a few of these to place around my business.
    1) Is it possible to setup a client software on a windows pc to see hall the cameras at the same time?
    2) Is remote access reliant on Amcrest cloud services? Or can I direct DDNS into this camera?
    3) Can the camera still record onto the SD card if wireless got knocked out?

    • @AwkwardHamster
      @AwkwardHamster  8 років тому

      1) yes
      2) no, i don't use their cloud service. you can use direct ddns
      3) yes
These IP Cameras are stand alone units. There isn't just one way to use it, it can be configured differently for everyone. What I demonstrated in the video is Amcrest's option because it's free and easy to setup. Amcrest cameras can also be managed by Network Video Recorders from other manufacturer like QNAP and Synology.

Does this camera work inverted? This way you can get the downward motion you were looking for. You said that it goes way up but not down as far as you wished for. If it works inverted, you can solve this problem. Mount it inverted from the ceiling and your up motion is now your downward motion giving you the range you were looking for. Please let me know as this will also help me with my choice of this camera purchase. Thnx!

Mike I wanted to start out slow and cheap so I have just a single 841B on the way.
As of Feb. 2017 people are saying that the Amcrest software is terrible and fatally flawed.
I intend to use the latest version of OWLR . . . then eventually grow my system to 4 cams.
I believe OWLR is able to do everything PTZ / Audio with excellent reliability.
What do you think of OWLR ???
    Can I use OWLR on ( 2) Samsung Note 3s and 1 Kindle (not fire) . . . without any issues ?
    THANKS

I tried OWLR before because they asked me to. Though I don't currently use it I think it's a good app. The popular features are free. Easy to use, can monitor multiple cameras from different manufacturers, can control pan/tilt, audio.
There are features I wish they had. Good news is they respond to users and takes suggestions for new features.
I have OWLR on my Samsung S7 and works fine. Don't remember where I put that Kindle.
If OWLR doesn't work for you, there are other free apps out there.

hi so I am on the market to buy either this one or the foscam 9831. I know that the resolution would be slightly better on this one, but besides that, do you believe that this unit is better or worse than the 9831 and why? I know that you did a review on the 9831 as well so I wanted your opinion on it?

Since it's Black Friday, I think Amcrest 1080P unit offers the better deal, $70 or less.
I wouldn't compare these head to head because one is 960P and one is 1080P.
I really like the Foscam FI9831P because it has good image quality and works with my preferred apps. Foscam app is terrible.
I really like Amcrest because it it has good image quality and their app is excellent. But, Amcrest doesn't work with other software I purchased.
If you don't need to use 3rd party software like a surveillance station, I would suggest getting Amcrest.

Thanks for the review. Just purchased one a few days ago. A couple questions:

      1. Videos are h.264 encoded. 30 min at 3am yields a 3MB file. 30 min at 3pm yields a 30MB file. Size varies.
      2. 32GB

Also, can it be connected to an unsecured wifi hotspot (my home network is too far from the detached garage)? Does it have a motion detector? How can I monitor my car inside a detached garage? It can be powered from a power bank that can output at 2 Amps, or cigarette USB adapter. I haven't tried using it with my hotspot but don't see a reason why it won't work.

Hello! Your video is very informative and very helpful, glad I stumbled upon your channel :D I'm a female student living in one of the off campus apartments and lately there's been multiple burglaries here and it's really making me anxious. I have a question and I hope you can help by answering, since I am actually very liking this unit and I am thinking of purchasing one. I was wondering if I can just simply connect the camera via wifi? I did purchase one lately, it stated "wireless" so I thought it would connect with the wifi. However I have to connect it with the ethernet cable to set up and that's what made everything a bit hard, since I only have one input/output and it's currently used for wifi. Sorry for this long message, but I just wanted to make sure that I can simply open the box and connect the camera through wifi, without having to deal with a ethernet set up. Thank you, Awkward Hamster :)

You can rotate the image 180 or however you want. This particular unit isn't rated for outdoor use but they do sell outdoor units.
I wouldn't put mine indoor unit outdoors.
Where I live I can be 10 feet away outdoors and begin to see drops in the frame rate. It's congested where I live so lots wireless interference outdoors. Point being, it depends where you live. Take your smartphone 60 feet away and see if you still get good wifi signal.

The Amcrest 1080P model is significantly better then Foscam 1080P model.
Amcrest mobile app is OK, usable, has bugs, but don't have an alternative app to use. Foscam mobile app was too limited so I avoided it.
Amcrest mobile app has PRO version that permits notifications but I haven't used it since it cost something like $0.99. It has be free one day for it to stay competitive.
