The EASY way I cut my rats nails

- This is the method I've started using to bribe tricky rats to have their nails cut! Crumble is a good boy and allows me to cut his nails the 'usual' way, but if you have a rat that isn't happy to be handled this may be a more effective method for you!

I know this comment is from two years ago but I'm looking for any help I can from experienced rat owners! My middle daughter wanted rats for her birthday this year. I did tons of research before saying yes and now we are the proud owner of two baby rat boys. We have guinea pigs so I know how to clip small animal nails but I'm having a major problem with these little babies! They are so tiny but very sharp. Any tips?
Is it bad that I’m now picturing Crumble staring at you, one paw out, and saying “we can do this the easy way or the hard way”?? 😂💙

Since you have hamster experience how do you trim your hamster nails
@@hamstergus9110 There is a video on youtube! It's not necessary if your hamster runs on its wheel a lot or something that makes your hamster trim their nail naturally
My boys are quite skittish. Once a month I put a fine wet and dry sandpaper 400 grit down in their free run maze I built.
As they run around it's like they are walking on a giant nail file.
Never had to cut their nails manually and my boys nails are always nice and trim.

I wonder if this would work if I just put it in the flat bottom of their cage now and again, let them run around on it for a while, and then removed it.
How long do you usually let them run on it?

Putting some in the cage would definitely help though

I just roll mine into a rat burrito with the feet peeking out and cut the nails like that. I also give them a little baby food after each foot to make it a positive experience!

It reminds me of when my rabbit was rolled in a burrito to check her teeth at the vets 😂

this is perfect! my rats absolutely hate being pinned down or restrained any way (they’re rescues from an abusive household so i don’t blame them, poor babies) and i’ve been having a hard time getting them to be chill

I've been attempting on and off all week to do a nail trim before my first show entries and was just getting nowhere. I saw your video, tried it and I've done both the wriggly boys I needed to do in no time! They were super happy and it was much easier for me!
I've only done back feet mind you but their fronts are not bad and I figured we've done well for a first try!

my first rats have never needed their nails trimmed so i unfortunately didn’t pay attention to my newer ones, i just noticed that their nails are starting to curl so this is super helpful!

Another thing I've heard and use is keep a brick or some sort of rough rock in their cage under their water bottle or somewhere they'll likely be walking/standing because it can help file their claws a little bit to at least keep them from being super sharp.
Emiology thank you so much for this upload! I’m a LVT at the largest animal hospital in NYC... BUT as you know from my previous question to you, I was so afraid of cutting the four girls nails. I’m going for it after watching this! Got the lava rocks too.
I used to think rats were good and mice were cute, but you taught me that rats are really nice, and friken adorable. I'm thunk about getting one of my own

I used an emory board (cardboard nail file) in the past. And a magnifying glass thingie. Very successful method. Hope this helps.
Aw, I need this for my grandpa Sammy. His back legs aren't what they used to be, so he doesn't wear down his nails properly anymore with his waddle/crawl. He's still full of energy and mischief though. ❤

I didn’t even know that rats nails need clipping! I’ve only clipped one rats nails, he had a paralysed leg (I think it was because of hind end degeneration but he started limping at 2 and he never walked on it again, vet said it was neurological but harmless) and that foot’s nails were sooo long compared to the others!
Thank you soo much! This gave me the confidence to try it and it worked!! I did end up holding them to do it but used your advice on human nail scissors and they were so perfect and made the job almost easy!

Ooh, what a good idea! Your rats are so chill, haha. I was always too terrified of cutting my boys' toes off when I tried clipping their nails, and I feel faint at the sight of blood, so... That never happened.
This method also wouldn't have worked for me because the cage I had for them only had two smaller doors rather than the whole wall flipping open. So instead of clipping their nails, I scrubbed clean a large flattened, gritty stone and a brick from the garden and placed one under each water bottle. I think it worked okay! Better than nothing, at least. Next time I have rats I'm trying this, though. 😋

My girls are NOT having any kind of nail trimming. I spent a fortune in different methods.
Put on thinking cap.
I removed all the ladders in my Critter Nation two story cage. I bought a lot of LAVA LEDGES (colored lava stones with washers and wing nuts) and made them in to giant steps. I also put a LAVA LEDGE in front of their food bowl.
Now, they trim their own nails every day!!

Did your rattie try to stop you or anything? My girl has the longest nails, but she's also the most playful and likes to use me as a climbing frame, so I end up getting cut all over quite a lot lol. Only problem with cutting her nails is I'm scared she might wriggle too much and I'll hurt her T.T

@@justasillygoofyguy yes you should be brushing your cat's and dogs teeth, I recommend at least once a week because just like humans they can have their teeth rot out or get serious diseases

This is so useful I'm going to try this technique for wiping off my messy old doe who never properly wipes off her face / arms / head much better than intermittent treats during bouts of struggling! xx
This is going to be very useful for my hamster who's nails have started becoming long since she's become sick. They don't need to be trimmed just yet, they're still fairly short, and I'm hoping the grani played I've ordered will keep them that way but just in case I need to cut them this is very useful 😅
Dwarf hamsters nails get so long! Syrians don’t usually need to be cut though

I just use a nail grinder, and some baby food to distract him, my pet Rat is named "Mango" he is a black hooded dumbo rat,.
To be honest my rat just sits there while I do his nails, with or without food

my rats sage and clove usually keep theirs down, but rosemary does NOT. the funny thing is, she will most definitely be the one least likely to cooperate 😂

Orb BiTe yea I don’t I’d want to try malt paste with my hedgie cause you’re not supposed to associate your hands with food cause they have bad eyesight and then they will end up thinking your hand is food and want to eat it meaning they’ll end up biting you
Such good boys letting you cut there nails!, you could put a sanitized rock in their cage and place it under the water bottle so that they stand on it to drink and it naturally trims their nails! Also what camera do you film on? 💞
I've never found it helps! I've had lava ledges underneath the water bottles before and it didn't seem to do much. This was filmed on a canon g7x!

My little rat boys have been with me for only a week and I'm a new rat owner. They started sleeping in separate areas, and I'm worried they've fallen out with each other. There's plenty places they can snuggle up together such as hammocks, cosy house and a fluffy tube. Is this normal?
