Khon Kaen is my new favorite city in Thailand! In particular, for experiencing Thai culture, delicious Isaan food, fitness options, and a friendly expat community. Plus, there are very few tourists compared to Phuket or Chiang Mai. After one week, I am excited to return to Khon Kaen for an extended period of time. Thanks to Martin and his wife, Stian, Namtan, and Andy and his wife for participating in this video.
Thanks for the video and thoughts! A few questions sparked up for me: Are there thai language schools in town? Is a foreigner able to purchase that $200,000 3bd 2ba property? How is the nearby motorcycle riding?

I lived in Khon Kaen 14 years ago. All foreigners were saying that it will be the next Pattaya.... No way, nightlife 14 years ago was way better than now... I was there 2 weeks ago. Better go to Udon Thani
The people are so beautiful both inside and out. I will be in Thailand and just added Khon Kaen to my list. Thanks for the video of this incredible place.
Khon Kaen would be hard to beat, with small cities in Thailand the price drops by 50% or more and the people are way more nicer. Cities in US/Europe of same size have more or less the same price as big cities.
You should see my little village 2 hours from Khon Kaen on the KK/Loe/Petchabun border up in the mountains, super paradise!! Built an ultra modern 5 bedroom two story house for 2.1 million.
That sounds like an incredible place you've built-ultra-modern and in such a serene location! I'd love to visit and see your village and home. Thanks for the invitation! For arranging a visit or just to chat more about life in rural Thailand, you can reach me at philip@andmarketing.us
All I can say is WOW… I had no idea… I’ve spent 5 months in Thailand, Hua Hin, Bangkok and currently in Pattaya… Love Thailand but have to say that I haven’t been super happy in either of those areas… I’m not a “sexpat” like so many other retired “Farangs”, I’m not a drinker, etc… I’m 70 but into running and fitness in general, loved the gym you showed… I just got my multi-entry retirement visa and in the process of figuring out where I want to live long term… I live the Pattaya area right now (I’m in Najomtien) but just something about it that doesn’t feel right for me… I like all the urban conveniences but want something more laid back and quiet… Khon Kaen looks exactly like what I’m looking for, also way more affordable than Pattaya… I’m in the States right now for Xmas but when I return I’m going straight to Khon Kaen to check it out for myself… Question, does it get Smokey there during burning season, like Chaing Mai? Thanks so much for this video… Looking forward to seeing your others… 🙏🏻
Wow, it sounds like you've had quite a journey finding the right spot in Thailand! Khon Kaen could indeed be a great fit, especially if you're seeking a quieter, more affordable lifestyle with urban conveniences. Regarding your question about the smoke during burning season, Khon Kaen does experience some air quality issues similar to Chiang Mai, though typically not as severe. It's great to hear you're planning to explore it further, and hopefully, it meets your needs for a peaceful yet connected lifestyle. Safe travels 🙏
Definitely, KK is awesome for expats looking for peace, friendliness, modernity, affordability,i hospitality, and delicacy. As a Thai, I also think Isan is great for retirement.
I've been living in Thailand for almost 10 years and although I have always lived in or near Bangkok due to my GF's job, Khon KAen is one of my favorite cities. I've found amazingly that even 5 or 6 years ago, many people in Khon Kaen hd a higher level of English proficiency than in many parts of Bangkok, likely due to the University town effect. But can't wait to get back for a visit...secretly hoping my GF's company will transfer her there someday.
This is my experience too, Khon Kaen's high English proficiency, likely influenced by its university culture, is indeed notable. It’s great to hear your appreciation for the city. Wishing for that transfer for your girlfriend's job to come through soon.
Hello fron Australia mate great video my girlfriend is from Khon kaen I met her in Hua Hin. I will visit Khon Kaen with her in a few weeks so I love this information. Thank you 🙏
I was in Khon Kaen many times and there is some beautiful spots and it is the real Thailand for sure, but you are missing one thing. The Sea. There is more great towns around Thailand beside the sea that are the real Thailand as u put it without having to go to Phuket or Pattaya. 😮
Thanks for introducing new cities to farangs. Isan really is up and coming region. There's a high-speed rail and brand new double track rails being built right now. After they are all done, we should see some real explosion of new developments. So do not overlook Isan😊
Man I also want to buy those street sweet potatoes too! :D They look so good and novel in cookie shapes. :) Khon Kaen sounds like a nice place.. what I wonder is if it can retain enough of its culture with all of the foreigners move there in the next few years. Here's hoping its not another Phuket. I guess time will tell?
I am glad to see people are looking outside of the usual tourist areas. I live in central thailand and love it however have visited hua hin Rayong and korat and loved them all. Pattaya once and hated it never went again. Bangkok is good to visit for a few days but have enough after a few days and glad to get home.
It’s good to hear you’re exploring beyond the typical tourist spots and finding places you enjoy. Central Thailand has its unique charm, and it seems like Hua Hin, Rayong, and Korat left a positive impression on you. I can understand how Pattaya might not be for everyone and why Bangkok is best enjoyed in short bursts.
No, Khon Kaen has reverted from better times. Post Covid there are very few expats and bars are quiet. Most bars and restaurants are geared towards the The Thai customers. Khon Kaen is true Isaan. Very reserved and modes, no in the face nonsense just normal day to day living. I came here 2002 and retired permanently 2012. I live in a rural village and its perfect for me. I took a trip in October November to Pattaya, Koh Larn and Bangkok. I was glad to get back home. A lot of live music now on the build up to New Year Countdown. Soo easy to visit the city and return home to the countryside and never bored. I certainly hope the expats start coming back and the place comes to life again. A point with Pattaya, I would have been better in Mumbai. Harassed constantly to buy suits, watches and sunnglasses by annoying Indians. Ruined the Thai experience.
I agree, the atmosphere in Pattaya and other tourist hubs can be overwhelming, especially with the aggressive sales tactics you mentioned. It’s understandable why you’d prefer the peace of Khon Kaen.
I'm planning a visit to Thailand in a couple of months. I'd like to visit this place. How to get there? is there an airport? Or have to travel from Bangkok? Never mind, I seen the flights :)
@THE-BASEMENT 😄 hah is this your answer. I am not throwing my money away if other people do it , all right !!! No long term visa, no residency - no investment.
Talking total shht pal. Nowhere has a "Booming housing market" in Thailand. Resale is desperate. No capital.appreciation and takes a very long time to sell. Expat living here 18 years bought and sold many houses in 3-4 different regions.
Great video mate You really covered so much in this one video , and I think you did a hell of a lot of work to put it together , but the result was awesome . Love your positive attitude , and as a male in my late 50s Gym is my church and couldn’t imagine my life without it . This city looks like a perfect choice for people like me who actually don’t want a crazy night life scene , and places like Phuket that have been ruined be the russian maffias that have been allowed to buy up everything and turn the place into an over run and overpriced holiday destination . So your videos are well needed to give ex pats a better choice of value for money and a great balance of city living but with growing infer structure and a sensible local government with a good strategy to encourage foreigners to come to a more friendlier, peaceful , respectful and affordable place to live .
Thanks, Dale! I appreciate your feedback on the video. It's great to hear from someone who shares a similar lifestyle preference. I'd like to interview you for an upcoming video to discuss your experiences further. Let me know if you're interested.
That would be great phillip , as I really love your channel and the way you interview people but just letting you know that Im currently live in Melbourne Australia and not in living in Thailand just yet , but I am now 8 years away from retirement age , while myself and my thai wife work as hard as we can to put ourselves in a position to be able to build a small house on her farm back in a little village called Na Doc Kham which is around 40 mins from the city of Loei in the esan area . I actually started a You Tube channel of my own about a year ago here in Australia which I called it . Dale & Nishas Road to Thailand , I made aound 7 videos at the time but due to loosing my job at the time and having to find a new rental property at the time , I lost the time and dicipline to continue with it . But I was starting to enjoy it , as well as learning how to improve my editing to get better in each video , so im sure I will get back to continuing with it once again when I get motivated and create some good content that I can use based on my situation as a farrang married to a thai woman and sharing our own experience in how we met , our struggles with immigration ,and how my wife and thai step daughter have settled in to life away from Thailand and learning english and assimilating into a western life style . Also how they have all had to cope with all of the difficulties of being in a foreign country with the weather and food being so different to thailand . Anyway phillip , I think you get the just of where I am at in my journey so far , so it would be great if we can maybe hook up for a chat on either a facebook messenger video or some other app or link if you would still be interested in having an interview on your channel one day , as I think it may just interest some of your subscribers that may be similar to myself and my situation in wanting to bring a thai woman to their own country , but also having a goal of returning back to thailand to live or retire . And I think that your current idea of giving your viewers a look at other smaller cities around thailand is a great idea , as too many ex pats get sucked in to thinking that retirement life needs to be the level 1 , and level 2 cities that you mentioned , when in reality , there are so many other better options available . Cheers dale 😊
Thanks for the video.. but I fear people highlighting this and other less touristy cities.. . will inevitably meet the same fate as the Phuket you're fleeing from
Only a simpleton or someone seeking to survive on a tight financial budget could forego the bordem and monotony of living in Isaan, surrounding by nothing other than thousands and thousands of rice fields.
while I'm happy for people to buy their own houses, i wish more would buy bitcoin and stop throwing their money away on stuff that never performs and eventually makes them poor

Right beneath Chaing Mai, so it has to get smokey.

Very good overview of Khon Kaen.
Thanks! Def worth a checkout since I want to move a little bit to the more rural parts of thailand but not to the middle of the desert!

Khon Kaen has a lake atleast
" Authentic Thailand " just a over used catch phrase ! Every where is 'Authentic Thailand " Real Thailand is right in front of you every where.
They're in a Western style shopping mall. I can never understand moving somewhere to live the same way you lived in the place you left.

No, keep the ex-pats out. Isan is about the only pristine part of Thailand anymore that has not been ruined by ex-pat louts.
What kind of drone is that ? Cool gimmick love it . Curious how you get it to follow you .
Thanks. It is the DJI Neo

How is the burning season there? When does it start, also?
The fact, that you dont know if they will renew your visa .....and you have invested money there, turns me away
Stop making excuses. Other people have done it, so can you.

love khon kaen and udon thani even more. but i don't think could stay long term due to burning season and floods.
Very good video! Are there any Christian churches in this area?
Thailand is a Buddhist nation. Let's hope there are few to none Christian churches. Keep Thailand Buddhist.
Where ever two or more are gathered in His name, there will be a church…😊
