    Hi Alex, Loved to see the vid! Now i've done something similar with timecontrol and putting devices "off/on"... I've done that with Home Assistant (HA) (the base for my house, since i wanted all smart-home to be "offline" working. I've used the Unifi controller and connected it with HA... HA can now "see" when devices are connected to the wifi (or switches), in my case my mobile phones. So i 've created an action... turn at a rondom time lights on around dawn, and turn them off again IF phones are not at home (since i will turn them off myself when at home). Same goes with leaving the house turning things off. Now with that creativity there was an issue... because the phones randomly disconnect from the wifi to save batterypower, it created some inconvenient situations... :)...
    What i did next was... i've added one "D1 Mini" in my car, wich connects to my home wifi... When the cars is "home"... it will not turn "off" the lights at a certain time. Now it also brings another advantage... since my car isn't the youngest and don't have a pre-heating unit in it (yet) i have made it so that when my alarm goes at 7am, IF the car "notices" (temperature sensor) that it is freezing, it changes the alarm to 10 minutes earlier. Very usefull and saved me by getting on time in the office. Extra effect from adding this to the car is to be warned IF the battery of my car is unhealthy and will notify me. Eventually will be adding more automations in the car more (like pre-heating). The D1 uses barely anything to say power so it's no problem to have it in the car running permanently.
    The same concept is used in the office... when i arrive there, before I am IN the office the lights are already turned on, since the Unifi controller there "notices" the car too. And there u go... Basicly so many more features can be added, it all depends on the creativeness or strangeness of the brain... :)...
    Anyway thank for for showing us around!

    UDM pro has an operating temperature of -10 to 40 degrees Celsius. In UK you probably ok with the low end but your roof isn't insulated on the pitch, whilst your ceiling joists are (as they should be) - you'll easily exceed the upper operating temperature for the UDM and probably the less robustly made other switch, modem, hubs etc....
    That kind of kit should be in a fan cooled rack somewhere with fresh air and/or air con.
    Hope you have a fire extinguisher near the loft...

    The power for your desk is very cool however I'd be careful turning the OLED off by the plug, when in standby it runs a panel refresh in standby mode to prevent burn in, if you turn it off by plug It cannot run this, particularly important if you are using it as a monitor.

    Your network gear uses way more power than all the lights combined so if you really want to save power, put all the network gear on smart plugs except for the UDMP, smart plugs hub and one centeredly located Access point for you to connect to and shut the rest down at night. Then run a time schedule so it automatically starts at a particular time in the morning.

    • @edewaal97
      @edewaal97 Рік тому

      What network gear are you talking about? If you mean the switch, router and wireless systems, I don't understand why you would turn them off. The security systems connect through that and you don't want them disconnected obviously I think? What do you mean?

    • @mrdinny
      @mrdinny Рік тому

      You would turn them off at night if saving power is your priority as they consume a lot of power compared to trying to save power by turning off lights. The optimum is to leave the UDMP and one central AP operational to run your Internet and a couple of cameras.

    Curious about the backbone in the loft, considering heat processing power creates heat, could be better utilised for home heating in cold climates unless I'm mistaken?
    I'm in a hot climate, so the loft would fry any processors, so they're kept at the floor level in the garage as the coolest place. Would be nice to move the desktop out of the office (which heats the room up) into the garage one day.
    I can't think of any better efficiencies or convenience otherwise.
    I'm a bit nervous about starting home automation, however Home Assistant seems to do everything so I'm not locked into brands and I think choosing a relay for the garage door automation would be ideal. Door locks and presence detectors seem useful but confusing (powered rather than replacing batteries all the time).

    Nicely done this smart disco, lights everywhere. Question, Where and how do you or would you use other smart appliances, (dish-)washers smartfridges etc. Reason I ask is that we just don't use the smartfunction on the washing machine and the dishwasher broke down. Would I buy a smart dishwasher and how does this come to it's right? What is the benefit from such machines in a smarthome? I feel that the "smart" in a lot of appliances breaks down to having the buttons on the machine replaced by another user interface; phone or tablet. Do I need to wash my wool jacket whilst in a bus? I still need to be with the machine to put stuff in or take it out. What are your thoughts?

I want to be able to control my main lights so it's not possible to completely cut the power with the main switch, but have the hue dimmer switch covering the light switch, without having to change the wiring.
