    This channel has fueled my love of microbiology. It turned a spark that started in my zoology class into a roaring flame. It inspired me (in part) to create an award-winning science project on microscopes, which is what motivated my parents to buy me a really nice microscope with a digital camera and the accompanying software for my computer.
    Hank, you have been inspiring my love of science ever since I found my first crash course chemistry episode almost 5 years ago. Thank you a million times over for constantly bringing this joy and wonder into my life. I would not be who I am or on the path that I am without a deep love of science, for which I hold you largely responsible. ❤️❤️❤️

    It would have been nice if you had said something about what they eat (if anything), what they're doing that produces such exotic waste chemicals, why they collect in small colonies, and why they bloom in spring. Rather than focusing so much on smell metaphors and collection strategies. Maybe the answer to these questions is "nobody knows," in which case that would have been good to know, too.

  • @fancyobsession1803

    I have a few questions:
    1. Under the microscope, how much of the z-axis do we see (besides the x-y plane)? What's the DOF that we are dealing with?
    2. How thick is the typical z-axis when samples are prepared?
    3. So far all the movement we see is left-right up-down, all we learn in school and see everywhere is that the "microcosmos" world is "flat"; how different do the organisms react/move when it's in the "real" world (where z-axis is "infinite") vs on the limited depth of the samples that we are viewing?
    4. Do micro organism even care about 3D space, or everything to them is 2D-ish.
    5. Any technology available to have a more 3D representation of the microcosmos?

Something say me I'm more sad than a person born in May because I was born in November, and the general world temperatures has been decreased till The minium temperature in Jenuary, either the May born person one was born in a Period when the temperature is rising from the minimum to the maxium so this mean it's perceive is to increas it's humor entropy in the verse of more entropy, instead I'm going to go in a underscale of humor, perceiveng an decreasing of general entropy that cause in me a kind of resistence to this humors that gifted me a kind of secret sadness but constant rational enthusiasm, either the May one have the gift of constant enthusiasm but a deep sadness;
    So We have the same emotion at a date time and we know both but in a kind of way we feel in a constant conflict;
    The one born in May and me born in November; The first have a different lenghtwave in the passage from an emotion to anothers, and consciousnessly it decrease it's happy, either me, I decrease my lenghwave till have a big sadness, and consiousnessly I get myself happy....

    Great video so happy you created this channel this stuff is so fascinating. You guys should contact netflixs and\or BBC to see if you can make a documentary(maybe even a series) that would be so awesome something like planet earth for microbes. (maybe even david attenborough, nothing against Hank just Attenborough has done a doc on basically every life group except microbes.)
    3:55 _it overshadows the green color of the chlorophyll,_ sounds like the xanthophyll's yellow is brighter than chlorophyll's green.
    I know you know better than this, that pigments absorb light, maybe I am interpreting it wrong but sounds like saying the color of the organism is caused by additive colors when saying _one is overpowering the other_ rather than subtractive like saying _only leaving the only the range between green and red unused_ As you said a sentence earlier _these pigments process different wavelengths._ So these organisms only reflect yellow/orange.

    I never heard of a photosynthetic organism that wasn't green before... I wonder if the purpose of the xanthophyll isn't also to mimic waste? It works with the unpleasant smell. Maybe this organism's aim is to deter animals from drinking it's habitat!

    • @Dragrath1
      @Dragrath1 4 роки тому

      Lots of photosynthetic organisms aren't green in fact the bacteriochlorophylls that preceded oxygen producing photosynthesis via Chlorophyll (They use H_2S instead of H_2O as their hydrogen source thus producing S_2 a solid as a waste product instead of O_2 a gas) There are also a number of different types of algae with different variations on Chlorophyll which largely work by shifting the absorbed spectrum of light. Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light reemitting green light hence it appears green but the aforementioned sulfur bacteria absorb green wavelength reemitting red and blue light hence why they appear purple.
      Interestingly after having gone off on a science binge it seems these golden algae are thought to have their unique color due to endosymbiosis of fucoxanthin(a carotenoid) containing cyanobacteria a trait they share with other Stramenopiles/heterokonts diatoms and brown algae(the latter often known as kelp) oh interestingly they apparently also include the parasitic oomycetes and the so called water molds like Phytophthora the cause of the Irish potato famine. These guys seem to be the freshwater counterparts to diatoms and kelp.
      Edit Hmm I'm getting a bit of contradictory information where some sources suggest the clade acquired their chloroplasts by endosymbiosis of an Archaeplastida algae (the lineage which red and green algae and land plants descend from) not sure which is correct....

    That explains that New Jersey state smell, you know exactly where you are driving down interstate 95 when you enter those marshlands and that rotten egg smell forces your car windows shut in 100 degree weather for relief.

    What is that number that has been showing in the bottom right?
    It hasn't always been there, and I am not a microscope user.

      I think they added it a few months ago. It's a measure of scale. It gives the length of the reference line that appears immediately above it, e.g., "100 μm" indicates that the line is 100e-6 meters long.
