      Damn near ended Albon's.
      The car is pretty twitchy and optimized for Max's _Leeeroy Jenkins_ style of driving, and Max "only" won 9 races this year (as opposed to 19 with the RB19), so I believe Liam is going to struggle with it a bit. But, being relatively new and still in his learning phase, he may be able to adapt to the car better than Checo could.
      Frankly I don't believe it's the best career move for off-track reasons, but he could certainly have done worse.

    On a side note: Advanced congratulations to Isaac Hadjar, given he's a member of the Red Bull Junior Team and F2 runner up, he's probably going to get the call up to VCARB or Racing Bulls or whatever they're calling it now. That means next season we will have (including Bearman and Doohan), 5 Rookie Drivers. After years of only getting 1 or maybe 2 new drivers per season, we have witnessed a major 'changing of the guard' moment, new drivers who may be stars of tomorrow making their starts and old drivers who have been in the sport for years prior making their exit.

Once Yuki is out you move Lawson in 2026. You get to see what Yuki can do (while he's still on a low contract), if he's bad you boot him down and promote Liam meantime you get to check that Liam really is all that... you'd get to test that cos you will know if he's at the limit of the car or not. What's the downside? Imagine if you put Tsunoda in the RB, then you keep Liam at VCARB - put Hadjar in the car and what if Hadjar beats him? you still put Liam in the car? No you put Hadjar... it makes no sense to gamble like this on Lawson, from any sporting sense - there are no downsides that I can see, even cynically that's why I (and many others) worry the decision is so personal and maybe racist --

      Merc doesn't have the luxury of a second team where they can sit their prospects and see how they perform, giving them f1 experience and in theory lessoning the shock of moving up the the big boy team if and when that happens. Merc are taking a huge risk with Kimi and it's entirely likely they will be kicking themselves for not just taking Sainz on a two season contact with optional extension when he was available.

    • @JohnnyMaverik
      @JohnnyMaverik Місяць тому +1

      @@pnw_jordan Outside of Lance Stroll most of F1 is merit based. Junior drivers have existing contracts and are cheep optional for team initially. If Mercedes feel Antonelli shows the potential to perform in f1 and the alternatives like Sainz don't excite them, it makes sense to take a risk on Kimi if you are willing to risk your constructors performance against taking a driver who likely costs a tenth of those alternate options and would be much easier to replace. Considering the cost cap constructors performance is now much less on a concern than it once was as none of the F1 teams run at a loss regardless of where they finish.

    I've given this a bit more thought, and though I personally would have preferred Yuki in the Red Bull, I think I do understand Red Bull's decision. First of all, Red Bull does not promote drivers based on seniority. So despite Yuki having been with VCARB much longer, that isn't actually a factor for Red Bull. They want to get the driver in the main team that they think will perform best. Liam has on average finished just behind Yuki, however he has had only 6 races in this season, and 11 races in total (iirc). So that kind of evens things out, when it comes to potential. And then they have seen how Liam has battled with the likes of Alonso and Perez. He said it himself: "I'm not here to make friends", and they like that. Then they look at Yuki, who I think expects to be treated fairly. Which is why he gets emotional when he isn't. And I do think that is an important fact to Red Bull. Yuki is a great racing driver, but he's not one to say "I'm not here to make friends". He's not one to try and fight with other drivers so much. Or at least, he hasn't shown that as much as Liam has. So... yeah, I do understand that Red Bull, given how they are, chooses to promote Liam over Yuki.

      You don’t know Lawson’s history and it’s obvious. He’s been a Red Bull driver for a LOT longer than Yuki, but has been relegated to the back seat for a long time due to drivers like Yuki jumping him in line due to Honda backing and the like. He’s been the development driver for Red Bull for a while and was probably instrumental in making the 2023 car so dominant. You’re missing a lot of context for how much Liam has done for Red Bull as both a brand and an F1 team.

  • @tindase

    I think one big factor that has been missed against Yuki is his not very infrequent crashes. Quite a few races, Yuki is fighting for points, then contact and he's nowhere.

  • @MaCcAM40a3
    @MaCcAM40a3 29 днів тому +3

    What I don’t understand about the Yuki argument is that Yuki has had 90 GP’s. Liam has had 10, with zero pre-season testing and zero development time. He’s come in late twice, yet his race pace is essentially on par with Yuki, their qualifying gap is 0.05 seconds apart in meaningful sessions.
    Yuki should be doing what Gasly did to him. But he just isn’t, Liam is essentially just as quick with 80 GP’s less experience. Liam’s ceiling is obviously so much higher.
    Yes Yuki has beaten Nyck (hardly a good metric) and Daniel (also in a massive decline), but the time he gets a confident rookie against him he really hasn’t dramatically outperformed him.

    Several rerasons: Yuki is a Honda driver more than a Red Bull junior and next year is the last year with Honda and Yuki would try to beat Max and we all know that would end like with Gasly with a lot of crashes and frustration, because nobody will beat Max. And also remember that if Yuki did not have Honda backing he would not have lasted more than 2 seasons in F1, he would have been replaced in the second season for sure.

    It actually makes sense after all the Horner/Marko explanations these last few days. They really want Lindblad in the Racing Bulls in '26. Imagine if they promoted Tsunoda and he has a good '25, that means having to drop Lawson or Hadjar after a seasson (and a half for Lawson). That's probably not ideal. Or having to switch again after '25 will also be inconvenient with a new driver having to find their feet in the team 2 years in a row. It's easier to bet on Lawson being in RBR for 2-3 years and have the Tsunoda/Lindblad swap after '25 when Honda leaves.

What is important is that he continue to give feedback to the engineers to improve the car during the racing season, the descriptions on how any tweeks are adding or losing value and time to the changes.
