Thoracic Spine Kyphosis Exercises

- Today's video discusses thoracic spine kyphosis and covers exercises that help reduce pain and improve mobility. The thoracic spine is made up of twelve vertebrae (T1-T12) and naturally assumes a slightly rounded or kyphotic curve. Because the thoracic spine also has connections to the ribs, it is naturally more stable and less mobile than either the lumbar or cervical spinal regions.
Interestingly, previous research has shown that mobilizations directed at the thoracic spine can be helpful in terms of reducing both shoulder and neck pain. In the clinic, we often teach patients how to self-mobilize the thoracic spine when treating low back, shoulder and neck issues.
If you are experiencing pain or stiffness in the spine or shoulders, give the exercises shown here a try and let me know if you have any questions. As always, if your symptoms are not improving or worsening, be sure to schedule an evaluation with your local physical therapist.

Thank You Tom!
You're welcome!
I am going to try these exercises. Thank you so much.
You're welcome!
Hi
Thank for your videos. I have a question though. My wife has kyphosis (curved upper back). We bought the spine corrector barrel and looking for the adequate exercices please. Could you please refer us to some videos addressing this?
Thanks again
Great ones to do thank you
Thanks!
Which sport is best to correct lunar thoraic kyphosis ...
I have this plus anterior pelvis how to fix?
What if you cant lay your head on the foamroller? Mine just tilts forward all the time. Cant do the angel movement
Super ❤
Thanks 🔥
Hey!!
Okay so I have thoracic kyphosis and i have stareted to siffer from breathing issues because of the forward Protrusion of my face as well. I feel it makes my mandible forward as well. Its painful💔
I don't have any types of equipments can you make a video on this (how to straight your back without equipments)
I will try to do one like that soon.
I have quite a strong hunchback and I’m assuming another reasons it’s due to my prolonged sessions in front of the tv or studying for university (which I’ve only just begun).
Do you think it’s possible to fix this with proper exercises and an improvement in core strength by going to the gym twice a week, at the age of 24?
Yes, I definitely think it is possible to improve your spinal mobility and posture, but you would want to implement these mobility exercises everyday or every other day to really see improvements.
Check out hip mobility exercises thats a huge issue for curved back and bad posture.
Have chronic left neck, left shoulder burning, electric zapping, migraines.
Currently more concerned with return of acute upper right buttock, feels like a thick ice pick stabbing me, is intolerable, and moves to right hip area. X-rays are ok.
Did have a deep ache in anterior right quadriceps with painful stabbing groin cramp (did have severe sciatica down back of right leg to ankle, but that's returned back to now right hip and upper buttocks severe intolerable stabbing (is that psoas?)
Physical therapy flared and worsened this. Don't want steroid shots like they suggest, what exercises could I do?
Where is your office?
Did the physical therapist that you saw only do exercise or did they implement some hands-on manual therapy care? When pain is the severe, the hands-on manual therapy can be really helpful to get things moving in the right direction.
@@RehabScience The electric pain was too severe for hands-on manipulation. They had me move slowly, standing using stretchy bands, sitting on a machine that had pedals to cycle slowly. They wanted me to do it faster, but if I felt a slight zap I wouldn't do it faster. After this minimal visit on a Friday, I was down with the taser zapping again in buttock and leg so was worried to go back, but did. Another slow session caused another big setback, and I didn't return.
Sir I had a injury where I fell on ground in steam bath and mid back got hit with the stone back how to get rid of now mid back pain.
Ouch! Sue

Thank you!
would this help with anterior pelvic tilt too ?
No, this wouldn’t be very helpful for anterior pelvic tilt.
It’s really can fix im 14 year old I have that problem mine is so ugly so I’m trying everything but I don’t think it will fix 1 day…
Each case is different and exercise won’t always change more fixed structural issues associated with how the bones and spinal discs form. However, in many cases, improving spinal mobility and working on one’s postural muscle strength can help reduce these types of curves and how they impact function.
Are pull ups a good exercise for kyphosis . ???
Pull-ups are a great exercise in general. The dead hand at the bottom position can help stretch the shoulder joints and thoracic spine.
Sir I have the problem of thoracic kyphosis+ LT scalpula elevated. Are they treatable.
Yes, in many cases you can improve mobility and function with exercises like I have shown in this video. However, if you don't have pain, it's important to remember that asymmetry in the body is normal and having an elevated scapula on one side is seen in most people. Try not to stress out about these things unless they interfere with your function or cause pain.
@@RehabScience Ah sir Thank you. I really appreciate your hard work with subscribers.
Can body stiffness be treated? Can I bring flexibility if my body is stiff.
Does this cost shortness of breath at all ??
Not typically. However, if the kyphosis were really bad, it could restrict the ability to expand the chest and take a maximal breath, but that is different than shortness of breath.
Is this good even if your kyphosis is more structurally fixed? Honestly more concerned over the pain I get than fixing the hunch too much.
These exercises probably won’t change the shape of the curve much, but they can help reduce pain.
Is hunchback the same as kyphosis? This seems like a good stretch plan, but don't you need to do weight training like face pulls, batwing rows to straighten that hunch? Or do both??@@RehabScience
Hunchback is the same as an exaggerated kyphosis. Those other exercises you mentioned can be helpful in combination with the mobility exercises in this video. However, the exercises probably won't change the shape of the curve much, but will rather help improve mobility and decrease any discomfort in the area. Previous research has shown that exercise doesn't tend to change postural alignment much.@@jeffyeah4256
Can it help with schuerman kyphosis?
They can help with that spinal change as well.
Can i do this even coz i have scoliosis too
Yes, in most cases these are fine with scoliosis. However, each case is unique, so you will have to test them and see how your body responds.
Schroth-Therapie is the Optimum for skoliosis
If my condition is bad enough, can it give me neck issues? I have neck issues
Yes, because the thoracic spine is the next adjacent region to the neck, issues in the thoracic spine can be associated with neck pain.
@@RehabScience yup this is definitely what I have then. Had bad posture since I was a teen, I'm 37 now
@@joelthewolf I hope you find these exercises to be helpful!
@@RehabScience Thanks, ill be doing them every day.
I tried for a long time to avoid this and then ended up in an abusive relationship and all my friends turned their back on me. My back is so f*cked. if I cant fix it myself soon, im going to genuinely leave this earth forever. I have everything set up to, but its insane that despite trying so long to avoid back issues, I have one hard time in my life, everyone I thought would help me didnt, and now im done for, genuinely my future is bleak. when i stretch it feels like my spine is stuck, like it needs to be pulled from my head to decompress it. It feels like a constant weight pulling my head down, it feels like hell genuinely, it is one of the most uncomfortable things ive ever experienced and It like constantly being stuck. I want to genuinely end my suffering
I am so sorry to hear about your pain and how much it has affected you. I truly hope the exercises in this video help you. You might also want to watch the other videos on my spine playlist as there are other back exercises that might help you.
I am praying for you.
How are you doing? Please don't end it all. Your life is valuable. Get better friends.
