What Happened to Underground Hip-Hop?

  • If you're a teenager thats too young to understand the difference between underground hip-hop and mainstream hip-hop music, don’t feel bad, because it is not your fault. You were simply born after the period in time when the main way audiences could quickly get in the loop of new music was to turn on the radio. Unless you lived in a city with a radio station open-minded enough to provide a late night slot to a hip-hop DJ with free reign to pick his or her own playlist, or you lived near a college radio signal to hear the raw selections of an underground hip-hop fanatic’s mixtape, vinyl, and CD collection, you were stuck hearing a handful a rap-related “radio records” promoted by major record companies.

People always talk about how mainstream music is today. We used to have to listen to the radio, now you can listen to whoever you want at the press of a touchscreen. There’s more artists than at any point in history. If you can’t find good underground hip hop in 2019 you aren’t looking.

Facts. If you goo deep enough into soundcloud, youtube, or even on instagram you'll find artist and rappers with little to no recognition slowly building up a following. It's just that the mainstream stuff tends to get promoted a lot more now on these platforms

🔱 WELCOME TO THE STREAMING INVASION
If Underground Hip-Hop is dead... It’s because the listeners who are willing to financially support and back the INDEPENDENT artists are in the MINORITY.
Sadly, the majority of consumers feel entitled to the work INDEPENDENT artists create and often TAKE-TAKE-TAKE without realizing or respecting the financial effort it takes for artists to actually GIVE.
Free and promotional work have ALWAYS been a part of the game... but when you have more consumers who exclusively stick to free content, and reluctantly support artists via merchandise, albums, shows... The sustainability of each artist falters and falls victim to the revolving door participation of the “culture”. Thus, careers spark - catch interest - then quickly die down.
I’ve personally seen a lot of talented rappers dwindle out due to the fact it’s harder to balance life and the current demand for content to maintain an attentive audience willing to financially support their work. Streaming percentages are a joke and one day, I hope Hip-Hop will unionize further time gain more control of the money they deserve.

But that’s not true... just because underground hip hop is more well known than other genres does not mean it is mainstream. All it means is that rap is bigger now and that the underground is bigger than ever. There are plenty of rappers who aren’t mainstream, y’all r honestly dumb.

This is the first time I saw one of your videos and didnt feel like you weren't actually fully aware of what you were talking about. Usually im like "Okay, this kid likes rap music, & likes hip-hop music, but doesn't really seem Hip Hop (although I have no right to tell someone they arent Hip Hop unless they prove it themselves) and is just too young to know a lot of the history but at least it seems like he tries diligently to research well for each video, I can at least respect that he tries, hes not just trying to somehow benefit off of it for nothing in return like a lot of the other kids in his realm/field", but you made a distinction in this video about the difference between hip-hop music and pop-rap, (rap music isnt necessarily Hip Hop or hip-hop music, and nowadays often is not) and you actually provided me with something to think about afterwards. You're getting better homie, keep it up 🤘🏻 - pickd4prez

When people say underground hip hop is dead, they’re talking about the spirit in which that music was made, the specific genre aesthetics of it. Let’s not pretend that an UNDISCOVERED rapper doing the same things as a mainstream rapper in hopes of having the same material success as a mainstream rapper is the same as an UNDERGROUND rapper who’s content to make creative/core hip-hop music for far less money while spending their whole career signed to Stones Throw or Def Jux or something like that. At least do us the respect of being real about what people mean when they say “Underground hip-hop” and educating the folks who don’t know about underground and the many different flavors of hip-hip that they’re missing out on.

Most Undaground Hip Hop fans are aware that the majority of the Undaground Hip Hop Industry exists on streaming platforms like Pandora and Spotify. However, Spotify usually has the latest and newest tracks by a long shot. I've Customized Spotify for over 2 years to inform me when tons of BRAND NEW Undaground Hip Hop tracks come out and I create Radio Stations with the latest releases. We all use the internet now to get music out, 20 years ago major labels didn’t understand That. Groups like Hieroglyphics, living legends and even chuck D was able to capitalize the internet and using it to distribute music.

I always had the belief that underground just meant not well known.
Like I consider an artist mainstream If i can ask about 20 people (of all types of different age groups) and half of them say they know that artist, then he /she is kinda mainstream, over half means he/she is mainstream and under means he/she is underground.
Also I think mainstream music also means super polished, extremely popular music. Think Drake, Migos, Cardi B, etc then compare that to Pouya, Earl Sweatshirt, AshNikko.
Most people would know the first 3 artists, I would have to search a bit for others to know the last 3

The whole idea of underground is that the artist is usually independent or signed to an indie label and tends to experiment from the usual norms of hiphop... but u can be signed to a label and still experiment... so the labels don't make sense anymore
