I'd say the cayenne saved porsche more than the boxter. I know a lot of car people don't like the cayenne, but without the cayenne porsche may not even exist right now
@Sink it was actually based on tuareg/Q7. But It's a Porsche!!!!! You would expect better from those two. Today Porsche sells the most fuel efficient high performance cars. Because of the 911 coupe design
One very important car not mentioned here is the Peugeot saviour, the 205. Huge part of its success was the Group B 205 T16, which became the most successful car in Group B World Rally Championship. Group B's immense popularity and the success of the 205 T16, winning the driver's and the constructor's title in both full seasons it contested, made the 205 sales sky rocket, which saved the struggling Peugeot from going under. Cool to see one of my favorite brands was saved by one of my favorite cars of my favorite motorsport.
Hmm, the 205 was a great car, but not sure that the rally success was what drove it. Even now I remember the "Oh, what a feeling, the 205" TV ads that made a mere number sound exciting. Then it won Car of the Year etc. Because it was simply incredibly well designed. Plenty of them were going strong when 20+ years old (my wife had one and we often saw others of similar vintage). One typical detail design point; wheel arches with no recesses where mud could build up, hence no rust in this usually weak spot for so many cars. And of course every boy racer wanted the 1.9 GTi.
Is it ironic that DB7 saved Aston Martin yet the company has been bankrupt 7 times in its history? I guess this company really can't avoid number 7 even in non-James Bond related context
The DB7's front end styling became some of the most influential ever, through a process that was somewhat controversial. Ford's styling department designed it for Aston-Martin and it became a very distinctive hit. During the 2000s Ford sold Aston-Martin and started using the same theme on their own cars. Aston-Martin was pissed but without a legal leg to stand on since the original styling was done by Ford.
I feel like an oil crisis, financial recession or a war are the only reasons people actually voluntarily bought all of these econoboxes and smol cars :v The only exception being the Gallardo and Boxster, although you could argue they're more economical than their bigger sister models. How can you Not include the VW GOLF, or "Rabbit" as I think it's called in the U.S..? I recall reading somewhere that Volkswagen being hit with declining sales of it's original air-cooled rear engine, rear wheel drive, "Beetle" 2 Door sedan, even with the later versions, desperately needed a new affordable car. They turned to an Italian designer(maybe Pininfarina?) who produced an angular even "boxy" looking, water cooled front engined, front wheel drive 4/5 seater sub-compact. It was a stark contrast to the German Automakers' previous designs to say the least, but with German build quality and sporting performance in the "GTI" models, went on to become a Top Selling small car in Europe and then across the globe. Without the "Golf/Rabbit" for VW., there may well not have been any new Lambo's, Skoda's or even Bentleys, to mention just a few...
Actually, the design of the Golf was done by Giugiaro. The angular design was a result of the demand for simplified production as the use of lead to smoothen body countours was not only expensive but became prohibited for the reasons of endangering the health of workers and crashworthiness. Fun fact: Before the decisionmakers had the good sense of dubbing the car "Golf", it was named "Blizzard" - no joke.
