  • This is the story of our sailboat sinking in category 5 Cyclone Yasa, a sailing disaster while cruising the Fiji Islands. Couldn't believe the way this hurricane was forming. It was hard for me to look back and throw this footage together, and even more tough during the few hours of sheer anxiety during this incident. I hope that you enjoyed this story, and learned something from it too. Never underestimate mother nature. Grateful to be alive this Christmas!

    Interesting video. Would be interested in more information and thoughts. Did the captain not want to be identified, concerned with his reputation? After all, it was not your boat. Is there anything that could or should have been done differently?? What line broke loose? What kind of ground tackle was available? Would any ground tackle have been available?
    I would be interested in a forensic post sinking examination of the sinking. Were there any attempts to salvage the boat?
    I have heard that ships sometimes go out to sea to ride out hurricanes. I assume that strategy is only for some much larger vessels.
    Interesting subject....

    I have to ask, as someone who wants to buy a sailboat, live aboard it, and travel the world like you did. Solo mostly, unless I get married someday.
    Looking back at the fate of the Pantagruel, is there anything you would have done differently, or do you think you made any mistakes dealing with the Cyclone? I really am having a bit of a crisis watching this video, wondering if I can avoid this, or how I could survive if I did caught in it. I'm sure that was probably expensive as well. Did you have insurance for the boat and all your belongings on board?
    R.I.P to the Pantagruel, she was a fine vessel. It seems like she gave you and all of those other people memories they will never forget.

    On a picnic with my family back in 2016 we went to natadola. That place is known for dangerous swells and under strong sea currents. So that day me and my cousins decided to go exploring on the other side of the lagoon. We walked across because it was low tide with ease. We climbed up the cliff and was enjoying the view. Not aware of the time nor the changing tides we set off deeper into the lush vegetation. After an hour and a half of roaming we decided to return. WE WERE STUCK ! The tides came in. We decided to wade across unaware of the under sea currents. I was 17 back then and my cousins were all 15. Half way through the lagoon we were pulled by the currents. Tossed under the waves and hitting the sea floor. I managed to swim out. Upon resurfacing I couldn't see my cousins. One of them managed to get to shore but 2 were still missing. I dived back under the waves and saw they were substituting each other by climbing on each others back to breath air and repeat. I managed the get to them and we just drifted out to sea. Further and further we went. No one noticing us. The one who made it to land passed out. When we lost all hope a hand touched one of the girls backs. It was local Fisher men on a boat. We were drifting out to sea facing the shore unaware of the villagers on a boat behind us. It's like they came out of no where... I got on with my cousins and we jst were traumatized but grateful for being saved. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Forever grateful to the villagers that saved us.

      Vinaka CJ. Your story has touched my day and I appreciate you sharing that with me. It is during those hard times that visions get a bit fogged and it's hard to see out of them sometimes. Sometimes it even starts to seem like hell, and then we make it out of them to tell the story, live on, learn, and grow from our past experiences. That's what life is man! Thank you for sharing that experience with me.

    Oh damn. I'm impressed you managed to document it all. I don't think you need criticism at this point. I wasn't there - you were. I'm sure you did everything that came to mind in the situation.
    As a fellow sailor, I wish you good luck onwards and I'm grateful you share this as it might present some learning opportunity. I'd like to see, or read, more about the preparation and the current status/results of the wreck. Will you try to recover the ship?
    ----
    And regarding your question about near-death. I've been there a handful of times, unfortunately. Being near death is not always the same as being in objectively clear and present danger of dying. It's a mental state of fear turning into tolerance, or even acceptance, that death is the outcome of the situation you're currently in. Since you are alive to post this video, I will assume (please correct me if I'm wrong) that you overcame this feeling of doom, and made it out. You might have made decisions that you regret, or don't understand, in hindsight. You might wonder why you couldn't think of *this obvious solution* or *that obvious stupid thing I did* when it happened. Many priorities will change with the near-death experience. You survived, as did your fellow crew. I suggest you make a conscious decision as an individual and as a crew, that this was your win. A boat, however much love we pour into it, is a tool. A material thing. It can be recreated, not the same, but for the purposes, similar. Shipwrecks are deeply symbolic in many human cultures. The symbolic meaning not always connected to the actual presence of a wreck.
    There's still a sea out there, and you're still here to sail it. If you want! If not, no one should think less of you for going ashore.

    • @TravelWithJaro
      @TravelWithJaro  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Tobias!
      I would have to fully agree with you on that one, it was just a feeling of doom. Especially with the winds being so strong during this Category 5. We did everything we could in preparation. The cyclone had switched positions and made us wish we had taken a different route. We tucked ourselves in the most sheltered place possible, had 8 connecting lines tied to surrounding trees, and didn’t think we’d move. We had 2 metal chains, as well as an anchor out. After having the lines snap at 3 in the morning. The winds had began pushing us up against this set of rocks, connected to the island. As the tide rose from 3-6 in the morning, the boat had gone under and luckily we all got out safe. However, if the rock had not been there, the situation could have ended far differently. The boat is now FLOATING. They had a salvaging company come to retrieve it and pumped these tubes beneath the boat, brought it up. It is now on its long journey to recovery. Luckily things have gone the best way possible in a very stressful situation. Thanks for sharing your input Tobias! Have a great day. 🙌🏽
