    I get why it scored lower on carryability but I'm grateful to live in a state where those legal issues don't currently exist. I've been looking to get one of these for some time now, after having owned two other Protech autos.

      Is the color the same as the swat? I'm seeing the operator is a tad darker in photos but that may just be cameras and screens issue.

    You can't make a knife with a tip that thin in the steels you mentioned. They're far too brittle and would break with normal use. Also, the buttons rotate so they don't wear out. If you used it in one spot for long periods, the much softer button wears out faster. Meaning you'd be replacing a very expensive button with just a year or two of use on it.

      S35VN is tougher and more wear resistant over 154.

    • @k-ozdragon
      @k-ozdragon 2 роки тому +1

      @@anthonyb2990 It's definitely more wear resistant, but tougher at the thin thickness used on these knives, it is not. The higher carbide content makes it more glass-like in structure. While this increases the wear resistance, it does make it more prone to fracture. The added niobium helps make this steel durable, but honestly I've found niobium steels to trade off wear resistance for added strength & machinability. Both are great steels, but needle point tips like on this knife are more stabile using lower carbide steels.

      Please educate may. Source the claim. Cpm 154 is less prone to fracture than 154cm. Therefore, there are a lot of less brittle compositions that would warrant strong points or tips. Are you taking heat treat into consideration? 154 cm is equal to a 420 or vg 10. You throw a crucible cpm s35v, 45, 20cv magnacut and you have the perfect materials for pointed pocket knives. I wont argue this point because I have the metal compositions and percentages in front of me. Your statement that 154cm is less prone to fracture is incorrect. The truth is 1. It is cheaper and maybe easier to treat. But If your statement was correct mideorech, heretic and protech would have failed big time on manufacturing different compositions on acute tips. Bro, we have seen the highest quality of cts xhp , bohler m390 , k390 kick ass in the "fracture department". Mateo is 100 percent right. 154cm is what kershaw uses. The Godfather deserves a cts xhp at the least. We could pull out charts. But bro, this is in peace and I dont mean to put an ego in this. Science based and rationale should always determine the goal....the truth. God bless.

      @@Apex_grind562 Steel works on a sliding scale. When you gain in one area, you lose in another. Adding carbide to steel makes it more glass-like, which means it is far more prone to fracturing. It becomes more brittle. That's the price you pay for gaining in edge retention.
      If you want proof, just watch Forged In Fire. You absolutely could *not* chop into a metal pipe with s30v. You can barely drop a normal knife on the ground without the tip snapping off, let alone baton it into steel. That's because they are all using carbon steels, which are incredibly strong, but not so great at holding an edge like a super steel & also are not stainless. So they gain immense strength while losing in both stainless ability & edge hold capabilities. Steel science is the attempt to find combinations & methods that end around this basic law of steel.
      You can simply remove heat treat from your calculations. Two different steels with the exact same heat treat will still behave in this manner. Higher carbide content = less strength. The only thing that has improved this in recent years is CPM technology. If you want proof, just study the fundamentals of steel. Or just go look at the various charts online. Higher carbide content gives better edge retention, but lowers strength. 154cm at 60hrc outperforms every steel with a higher carbide content. That includes XHP, which is also much more expensive than 154cm. There's a reason no one makes needle point knives in these steels.

      @@Apex_grind562 "Toughness and edge retention are generally opposing properties and it is difficult to improve both of them at the same time. There is no such thing as a steel that is a “10” in both toughness and edge retention. Or even a 7 in both categories. In general, higher carbon and higher vanadium steels have higher wear resistance and edge retention but lower toughness. In general, the more carbide the steel has and the larger the carbides the lower is the toughness. For high wear resistance and edge retention you want a large amount of hard carbides. And for high toughness you want little or no carbide. So the major tradeoff is in how much carbide you want in the steel for edge retention without dropping toughness too much for the intended knife and user."

    Any model of the protech godfather is difficult to find these days. Protech seems unable to keep up with demand. I'm a little disturbed to hear that yours came lacking the edge one would expect to find on a knife in this price point. Perhaps a bad day for the inspector?
