The grape that got me into wine. And this is the first video where I’ve had all the Chianti and Brunello producers and almost all the other recommended producers. I do prefer my Chianti 100% Sangiovese. Pretty much love anything from 2016 that I’ve tried.
I read an article debating if Chianti Classico wines should be 100% Sangiovese since the area has always made blends. For me, I love the wines matured in botti as I my Italian wine to taste like an Italian wine.
Yes, many people believe that Chianti Classico should be 100% Sangiovese. But then again there are many great wines that are not. I guess, I don’t mind the local ones (grapes), but I do believe that Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot might be too expressive and do overpower the delicate Sangiovese. 🤷♀️
@@NoSediment seems that the blends with Merlot or CS are trying to be baby super Tuscans…. But that said…..drink what you like. Plenty of choices for all palates.
Thank you, Agnes! I really like your videos. Lots of information, humour and I like your recommebdations. I now have La Magia Brunello in my cellar, Chianti Classico Fonterutoli and … of course some whites from the Wachau 😃
Always love your videos. Short and packed full of info. Since I like Chianti wines. I therefore like Sangiovese wines. I may want to branch out more in other styles and producers. I need to pay a visit to my local Total Wine and More store!! Thanks Agnes!
Thank You 🙏🏻! Yes, there are so many styles available within the Chianti and Chianti Classico category, it is worth exploring, especially if You like Sangiovese! 🍇
Love a beautiful, acidic Sangiovese based wine. You can pay a lot and get a superior Brunello or Supertuscan, but I love paying a reasonable amount and getting a superior Chianti Classico. Such a great value to quality wine.
I have always been about ‘value for the money’. It is not hard to find a great wine for a high price. And Chianti Classico most certainly are amongst value wines. I am not so sure for how long though. It is seen already in the Gran Selezione category, some are crazy expensive. 😞
Hell yes, it’s the absolute measure, I love it, it’s my first type of grape that spoke to me, love cabs but Sangiovese is the King of grapes, my favorite grape hands down. The Rule of major if you will.
Great to hear that! For me, it took some time to start to appreciate it and love it. But I can say proudly now - I like it very much and it is commonly opened and enjoyed at my house! 🍷
My problem is that I remember Tignanello as this very affordable great wine, and now when I see its price, I cannot bring myself to pay the money. :( it got very expensive very quickly. 🫣
@@NoSediment I went back to check how it's been with the Tig and now I have the same problem :) The price hike is steep to say the least. Is it because the step up in liv-ex ranking or just generic hype, nevertheless, I'll pass it as well in the future.
To be honest I don’t really know the reasoning but my guess is that it was deliberate decision made by the Antinori team - to position this wine at the premium category. Because the sudden price increase was almost like overnight thing. 😓
I completely understand, for the longest time I would laugh about myself. Saying that I love Brunello, but am not a big fan of Chianti Classico wines. But that style has grown on me, and I really appreciate the high quality of these wines right now. And I agree, they are more “sour cherry” and higher acidity.🍷💯
Probably Chianti Classico based on the “very sour” comment, but if you want the best Chianti Classico you need to find 5+ year old Riserva or Gran Selezione from good years for Tuscany. Currently the ones you want to hunt down are from the 2016 vintage. But I won’t deny that a wonderful Brunello is simply amazing. Chianti isn’t all Chianti Classico btw, although that’s the most popular appellation for Chianti, there are several other Chianti appellations and they’re all much less sour while young than the Chianti Classico appellation offers
Hmm.. these are two elements in wine. Acidity is something we all understand, for example lemon is acidic. And wine can be sweet, but still have high acidity (lemon doesn’t loose its acidity, even in there is sugar on it). The other element is tannin - and tannin can be taste, but also feeling. For example strong black tea can have high tannin presence, it feels drying and sticking to gums. Some people refer to it as slightly bitter. So, for example, Sangiovese has high levels of acidity and high levels of tannins. 🍇 I hope it helps. 🤷♀️🤷♀️ ??
We were having dinner at Trattoria Zaza and ordered a bottle of Tignanello without knowing anything about it Until later when the waitress told us it’s a really good bottle and we shouldn’t ask to chill it … I just like my red wine slightly chilled lol
I think that is okay. A lot of people like their red wines to be served slightly chilled. And since You are paying for that bottle, You can do whatever You want with it. 🤷♀️ anyway, I hope You enjoyed it! 🍇🍷
Maybe one day you could talk of the rise of Cali's Sangionese. The Californian climate is far more similar to Tuscany than it is to Bordeaux so Italian grape varieties make sense. Italian grapes flourish in warm, dry, heat and they are more likely to produce outstanding fruit over there.
You are absolutely right, Italian grapes make sense in California. Unfortunately I have not tasted enough of them, and have not really studied deeper, therefore I don’t feel as comfortable to talk about this subject yet. Maybe next time I am there. 🤷♀️ 😉🍇💥

Sangiovese: Italy's Touriga Nacional or Tempranillo (whether you're in Portugal or Spain) ;) PS Actually Tempranillo also takes vast acreage in Portugal under the name Tinta Roriz (in the Douro) and Aragonez (in Alentejo)
A video after my own heart… Sangiovese is possibly my favorite red wine grape. It made me fall in love with wine and my palate has never waivered… 🎉
How?!? How is that possible, I mean Sangiovese is not an easy grape to start with (tannin and acidity)! Wow! 😅 Usually people start with Primitivo! 😜
@@NoSediment It's the sweet n sour red fruit flavors!

I have started to appreciate it more and more. 🍷 And what about the white?

There's a winery making great Sangiovese in North Carolina, USA - Raffaldini. I recommend a try!!! Cheers.
