It's subtle, but I like how you go into slightly more detail on basic things when reviewing a lens aimed at people that may not know very well what they're doing or looking for.
Hi Chris. Love your videos. Great photos and solid information. Fun Nikon fact, they color balance all of their lenses to match. From the lowly 18-55 kit lens here, to the amazing 105mm f1.4G. Leica is the only other company that does this.
Props for mentioning the non compatibility for older DSLR-s Chris, on photogear selling forums in my country few years ago i had to always be a smartass and spam this info under AF-P lenses for sale, because these are prime targets for beginners to buy as first lenses, and it wasn't a widely known thing that they won't do anything on older cameras not even manual focus.

This lens is an absolute bargain, gem. I bought one for one of my D7100 bodies to save space in the camera bag and I was blown away by the focus speed and how close it can focus. It cost far less than any of the AF-S 18-55mm lenses Nikon made on the used market. I was so impressed that I bought another one for my 2nd D7100 just because I liked the performance.

I've got this with my Nikon d3500. This is an excellent lens, very sharp and great colours. I've taken endless pictures in different situations, time after time it produced very good results. An underestimated lens.
I used the predecessor of that lens on my D5100. Lightweight and almost perfect for hiking. It withstood light rain (for hours), heavy and wet snowfall, dust, etc. You get that lenses very very cheap used. btw: Nikon made a mistake by designing it with 55mm filter size. Most entry level Nikon DX lenses had 52mm filters (55-200mm, 35mm, 50mm, macro).
that's about the last lens I expected you to review I bought this lens for less than 50€ on ebay a few years ago. The Lens cap was the terrible cheap plastic lens design and broke on me recently, replacements with proper springs are very cheap though.
I bought one of these some years ago and have been very pleased, stop down and avoid the widest setting (you don't have to go much above 18mm for much better results) it is a great travel lens (as is the 18-140). At well under £100 if you hunt around, great value. Bokeh is so passé ;-)
I'm one of many others who used to watched your channel wishing if you were a Nikon user... yet I enjoyed as others most third-party lenses as they available at both platforms... I saw others already suggesting other lenses and I would advise you to try the 35mm 1.8g DX (35mm on Dx is equivalent to the most classic nifty fifty on full frame) ... it is magnificent prime lense that is so light, small, cheap. Interestingly this some wedding photographers use it one full frame body where the limited vignetting gives artistic results...
So i use the afs vr gii version on my full frame d700 and its been quite the dream working from 24-55 which for how much it weighs makes it a great only lens for a light weight travel setup

I guess you mean shorter F stop as in Lower Aperture numbers. I am not a lens scientist, but I guess the most short and basic of it is that its harder to make glass that remains sharp around the edges versus the center. The smaller your aperture number is, the bigger the lens hole becomes, which means more light is being transmitted through the glass edge rather than the middle, which can result in to stronger vignetting/distortion and all kinds of things. More expensive glass is sharper even on the edges

My Nikon N-Photo magazine rates the 18-55 kit lens with a score of 2.2 and the Sigma 17-50 with 1.6 (1.5 is the best standard zoom for DX which is the Sigma 18-35). But I think they include the apperture in that ranking so it probably doesn't say much. As the user before said it depends if you need the apperture/bokeh. I personally (as an ex-Nikon D5100 user) would go for the Sigma 17-70, that lens has more reach and less weight than the 17-50.

The fast AF really helps because it lets you get the first shot off quickly. All the sharpness in the world doesn't help if you are out of focus or miss the shot.
Oh, everyone were furious when I tested this lens and compared the sharpness with Fujinon XF 18-55, angry Fuji fanboys could not accept that their "best kit lens" is as sharp or even less sharp at is wide end than this cheap plastic Nikkor.
I've actually tried the fuji xt4 with that kit lens was unimpressed it's a very soft lens especially in the corners I think people hype it up for its build quality and fast aperture for a kit lens but the optics are lacking whent with a z6ii and got the 24-70 f4 kit on sale and image quality leveled up big time
The image isn't getting brighter but rather more even. Since the exposure is adjusted to keep the center the same brightness, the corners will be darker *in comparison*.
I bought this lens specifically for events and group photos, but I really don't know how to use the focus. It's practically unusable for me now, I almost sell it but all the good comments refrain me to do so. I even though this was a manual focus. What I'm doing wrong? I’m confused. Bear with me I am a complete novice. If the lens aperture only goes to f5.6 how does kicking it up to f8 even do anything? Like say it has a maximum aperture of 3.5 the camera won’t allow it to go to 2.5. I’m just confused how that works.
Is it possible for you to review the AF-P 10-20mm DX? See whether it would be a good complement for the 35mm DX prime lens or one is better of with this lens instead
You can put it on a film camera with F mount .... then it won't focus or set an aperture or have image stabilization. Note some DX cameras lenses might hit the mirror too
Can you review two Tokina lens that seems to be awesome and you don't review yet? Tokina 100mm 2.8 AT-X PRO Macro - Very very recommended and one of the best macro lenses out there Tokina 14-20mm f2 for DX. I heard great thing about it / Fastest super-wide zoom for crop sensors. Thanks.
So basically an f8-lens for good image quality, save for the corners in wide-angle. I actually like the Canon EF-M 15-45mm a lot more for what it is, because it has great image quality for landscape in wide-angle and reasonable center sharpness for portraits at tele.
It is interesting to see the only Nano Coatied DX and very expensive Nikon AF-S Nikkor DX 16-80mm F/2.8-4E ED VR up again the dirt cheap Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8.
I got this in a kit and I honestly can't stand how ugly it is when opened. It feels so cheap all the way around. That said, it is not bad, and compared to the price range when buying it used it is hard to argue it is not worth the price. Lenses under 100 euros that have autofocus? You can hardly find a prime for that money, let alone zoom of any kind. If you correct for distortion, maybe remove the tapes and wear gloves so you don't feel it's icky plastic, it can take sharp images.
Bad lens. Strong chromatic aberrations (i'll say almost incorrectables) and softness on corners when shooting on wide angle. I`ve had two copies and they were the same. Not recommended.
Love how Chris made the video just a bit more educative because it's likely beginners will see it.

Another hidden low-cost gem is 10-20 afp due to its weight/performace ratio. Hiker approved :)
If that one was an FX instead of DX lens I definitely would've gotten it (instead went for Nikon 20/1.8G).

I had that lens with my first DSLR, it was surprisingly good
The 10-20mm AF-P lens works great on a Z50 with the FTZ adapter.

if the lens is f3.5 to f5.6, how is that you're talking about going to f8 and f11?
Lenses show the lowest aperture values on them, this lenses lowest aperture at 18mm is 3.5 and 5.6 at 55mm.

The 35mm 1.8G is one of the top scorers. Just like just about any of the AF-D lenses.

Can you use this in a Film camera?
You can put it on a film camera with F mount .... then it won't focus or set an aperture or have image stabilization. Note some DX cameras lenses might hit the mirror too

Push the retractable lens barrel release button and rotate the zoom ring to the "L" (lock) position.
