I love how you actually go through everything you did rather than just a montage of some of the steps, really gives you more appreciation for the amount of work that goes into something like this
wow. I got to 6:25 before i realized u had background music going on. Usually videos with music have it cranked louder than the speaker. Very subtle. Touch of class. Class act. new subscriber.
Wait so Rob actually plays a shovel? I always thought it was supposed to be fake for "comedic value". You know, the whole "ha he's pretending to be playing a shovel that's funny". This is pretty cool, never knew you could play a shovel.
Rob is actually the reason I discovered your channel, after his Shovel Metal video he said that you were the guy who built it, so I thought I'd go take a look at your channel and I was not disappointed ! Thanks a lot for your videos, and keep up the good work ;)
+I Like To Make Stuff For sure, but I'm just happy if I can make noise sound cool, the rest is just bonus! Impressed with the ease of installing a pickup on a random object like that. Thanks man!
So I am a Contractor/Carpenter/Woodworker and a Guitar player since about 1966 with a degree in music 79, I've never used. So naturally as a subscriber I gravitated to this video. I really didn't think it would work as well as it did. Honestly, I thought you're going to hang this on the wall with your empty beer bottle collection. Good job.
The "mistake" on the string tuner, in my opinion, is actually pretty awesome. I like the clean look of the string going underneath. You, sir, have done a fine job!
Bob, great video! I tried making one of these like this and found that, in my case, annealing the spots on the shovel (heating the steel with a torch to a point slightly above the critical temperature in order to soften the metal to a more easily workable hardness) where holes must be drilled makes for a much easier time and greatly lessens the risk of damaging your drill bits on the hardened steel of the shovel. I am not saying you did anything wrong nor do I consider myself an expert in metalworking. I am simply sharing something that I discovered through my own attempt at this project. Cheers, Dante
That turned out really cool, not what I was expecting. I can imagine a whole set of guitars made from old wood handled tools; maybe even an old felling axe.
Ok Bob! WTHECK MAN!! This is by far the coolest video I have seen on UA-cam!!! You've inspired me to start learning how to wood work. I've been a CNC lathe operator for Aero Space for over 10 years and want to move my skills into something a bit more enjoyable. Thanks for this video! It has giving me some ideas and inspiration to try new things.
I'm not really into music too much, don't really know much about it, but this is pretty bad ass... I really enjoyed his video last week and was waiting for this one! Thanks for sharing.
This is cool even if you don't play the guitar. What a cool conversation piece... once again great work. Could see this same technique being applied to different objects as well!
I saw this on Rob's channel and I was wondering how he made it, only to see this in my sub box. Another awesome project, hope to see more from you two in the future.
rob and bob. how is it that youtubers I watch are more often than not connected, even if their channels have nothing in common? I'm starting to thing I don't have as much free will as I though when choosing which channel to watch. Then again, rob seems to be friends with half of youtube. Anyway, cool job, Rob, I mean, Bob.
+zaxapitsa Yeah, I think the creator community is more connected than it seems. It's kind of like the software world.. developers often cross paths a lot because they're into the same things and visit the same sites, etc.
I wish I had the tools and money to make stuff like this! This is so awesome and +Rob Scallon played that thing like it was nothing and made it sound great! Awesome job to the both of you!
Tip: at 1:39 you were trying to grind off the rust. Boil it in water for about an hour in a container that can hold enough water to cover all of the metal. The hematite is reduced into magnetite. It wont be all of it, or perfect, but it does actually coat the metal in what is called a patina that is non-corrosive and protects the metal. The process is used in knife car and firearm coating in the old days.
Very cool, Bob! He was getting some nice bends out of that. I already have three guitars sitting, waiting for refinishing and new electronics. I don't need any more guitar builds on my list! :D
Tung oil is *totally* an appropriate finish for guitars. Many custom builders use it, including brands like Carvin/Kiesel. :) along with stainless steel frets, Tung oil necks are probably their next most popular option.
Wow! Very creative. Your videos really help. I just spend 8 hours on a lumber storage cart mixed with the really easy 2x4 table. Those are 2 tutorials that you made.
“I got a little ahead of myself and I made a mistake, as you do when you make a guitar out of a shovel” I don’t know why I thought that was so funny but it made me crack up 😂
Brilliant, love the oddness of it, get recovery with the nut, looks great with the string passing through the neck. Will this be the start of a series 'what can we make a guitar from now?' lol 👍
This is so cool! I've not been over to Rob Scallon's channel yet, but I know I'm gonna subscribe because he wore a Pizza-John T-shirt in the clip you showed. Thanks Bob!
Hey Bob - great video! I'm new to woodworking and was wondering if you could do a video on how to make a proper workbench, as this is probably the first thing I have to build in order to make more projects. I always love your videos and they're really helpful for learning about building! Keep it up!
The whole project is great, great fun to watch! I guess, another idea of fixing the nut issue would be to use the "string tree", but you've chosen a way more creative path. Cheers!
Nice job. I like the way you don't precisely measure everything but do a rough estimated and then go back and fine tune. I have done the same my whole life, always thinking - maybe I should measure stuff more before cutting :o).
2018 incoming! Just started playing guitar and stumbled across Ron's video a moment ago, been subscribed here for a long time and remember you making this, but don't recall following on to Ron's video at the time. Better late than never hey.
I love how you actually go through everything you did rather than just a montage of some of the steps, really gives you more appreciation for the amount of work that goes into something like this
Love the simplistic craziness of that build, Bob. And that dude freaking jammed on it. Insane you can get that sound from a shovel. I dig it...
+Fix This Build That Thanks Brad!
lol I dig it get it?!
:) Nope, he really plays it. He's pretty amazing at what he does!
MyNameIsNidos
If you had a string on your body, he'd probably play you as well
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Please tell me you aren't a teacher...
When you gave it to Rob, I hope you said 'Hey man! take this. no strings attached'.
+Natural Nerd Hahaha, that is a missed opportunity! Wish I had too!
I dig it.
But there was... There was one 😂 😂
Lol
now make a shovel out of a guitar
Lol
+mike gager lol
nice :)
+mike gager Just revers the vid :)
+samsite28 hahahaha thats smart
I made a shovel out of a les paul....it didnt work very well
neck broke
Rob is actually the reason I discovered your channel, after his Shovel Metal video he said that you were the guy who built it, so I thought I'd go take a look at your channel and I was not disappointed ! Thanks a lot for your videos, and keep up the good work ;)
Hahah. I love the comment, "Is it a good guitar? Well no its a shovel" great video.
Probably not a great guitar but I bet if you hang it on the wall it will start some interesting conversations.
Th Linn, I'm your first like
he insist a lot on the fact that it"s not a guitar but a shovel
Very awesome! I always love it when people make stuff do things they weren't designed to do! Very creative!
rob send me here..
Alright, that's it! I may just have to build myself a guitar now. Never realized it could be that easy!
+Switch & Lever Adding frets is a whole different matter, but I'm sure you'd have no problem with the precision needed!
+I Like To Make Stuff For sure, but I'm just happy if I can make noise sound cool, the rest is just bonus! Impressed with the ease of installing a pickup on a random object like that. Thanks man!
The trick is not caring about the intervals!

Really cool DIY guitar! That EMG gives it a bit more dirt too! Awesome!
I love how tongue in cheek this whole thing was. Nice work.
-Todd
I like how you use the webcams as cameras, very smart, cheaper and sometimes better than a real camera
Rob brought me here, actually, and I already watched all of your videos, you're awesome!
+Guido Michaelis Excellent, and thank you!!
Bob, great video! Some of my favourite UA-camrs working together, wonderful!
Build a guitar out of a Guitar Hero controller
The neck would break.
I already did this and it hasn't broke and it's not even reinforced
"Is it a good guitar? No but it's a shovel" LOL
Will you and Rob be doing other stuff in the future?
+Bo Simmons YES!
+I Like To Make Stuff GOOD! It's so cool how you two did this!!
+I Like To Make Stuff Yes! :D
Yes!
+Rob Scallon Yes!?!
Love the colab! fantastic idea!
That turned out really cool, not what I was expecting. I can imagine a whole set of guitars made from old wood handled tools; maybe even an old felling axe.
'Is this a good guitar?
no its a shovel'
Loved the humor in this vid, as a hobbyist guitar maker this was great to see!
Rob playing this shovel is what brought me here! Subscribed!
Love the music related build- awesome crossover of music, making and production
I actually play guitar and was watching rob, and then I found your channel and it got me into making things....
Crazy project... and your friend that plays this is very talented.
So gratifying to watch the creation in action. Worth the wait for sure brethren!
This is the stuff of LEGENDS! Holy *****! WOW! Amazing work
I applaud you for making this! I saw his video a month ago and I was so impressed!
This is one of the most badass things ever.
Haha, a shovel guitar was not something I thought I'd be watching tonight. Great video Bob, really cool project!
+Robin Lewis Thanks Robin!
Now that is a very cool project
Your mess up made it that much more unique! Cool Stuff!!
Ok Bob! WTHECK MAN!! This is by far the coolest video I have seen on UA-cam!!!

Thanks for this video! It has giving me some ideas and inspiration to try new things.
Awesome!!
Imma make a case for my shovel guitar. Thank goodness you have a video for that too.
And this kids is how a legend was born...
Didnt expect this collab at all! Awesome!
I loved this project! I am not into that kind of music, but that guy rocked that shovel! Great video
That was truly awesome. The making and the playing.
Just saw Rob's video... Holy SH*T dude! He rocks! You rock! And it really goes to show... "A master never blames his tools"
Saw Rob's video when he posted and I was thrilled to know at the end that you made the guitar! I was looking forward to this video, thanks! (:
I'm not really into music too much, don't really know much about it, but this is pretty bad ass... I really enjoyed his video last week and was waiting for this one! Thanks for sharing.

Really awesome collaboration \m/ Rock on man \m/
+Felix Schofeld Thanks!
This.....this just kicks so much ass dude. You really are one talent dude.
YES! It's a shoveltar :D
Some great problem solving in this video.

You really bought this old shovel back to life by converting it into an Electric Guitar. The Pan acts as the Body and the Handle acts as the neck.
I found out about your channel through Rob's. You guys are both great at what you do :)
+Mark Giles Thanks so much!
I love your channel. I just want to say that because you always make really cool stuff and there's nothing inappropriate thank you for being awesome!
A really cool and creative project Bob. Way to reuse and cut down on waste.
Very cool, Bob! He was getting some nice bends out of that. I already have three guitars sitting, waiting for refinishing and new electronics. I don't need any more guitar builds on my list! :D
I saw your project on "Outrageous Acts of Science' yesterday. nice to see you have gotten some recognition.
Thanks Rick!
This is fantastic! I'd love to see more of these one-off experiment projects.
"It;s not a finish that you would normally use on a guitar neck, but this is a shovel." I lold.
Funny thing I learned about your channel through rob's video, and of course seeing your amazing content, I stay :D
+Panerakis Thank you!!
Tung oil is *totally* an appropriate finish for guitars. Many custom builders use it, including brands like Carvin/Kiesel. :) along with stainless steel frets, Tung oil necks are probably their next most popular option.
Thats kinda funny because i saw rob's video way before i found your channel, its cool that you guys are affiliated in a way.
Rob sent me here, great project
Wow! Very creative. Your videos really help. I just spend 8 hours on a lumber storage cart mixed with the really easy 2x4 table. Those are 2 tutorials that you made.
I briefly mentioned this Shovel Guitar project on the latest Woodworking Top Videos show that just when live! Please keep being awesome!
+Awesome Wood Things Thanks!
Rob Scallon brought me here. Subscribed :)
just watched Rob shred. Nice job big man!
“I got a little ahead of myself and I made a mistake, as you do when you make a guitar out of a shovel”
I don’t know why I thought that was so funny but it made me crack up 😂
Brilliant, love the oddness of it, get recovery with the nut, looks great with the string passing through the neck. Will this be the start of a series 'what can we make a guitar from now?' lol 👍
+Rob Evans Haha, you never know ;)
+I Like To Make Stuff you could make cigar box guitar
Who dislike this video? Fender? or maybe Gibson? This is really well done!
This is so cool! I've not been over to Rob Scallon's channel yet, but I know I'm gonna subscribe because he wore a Pizza-John T-shirt in the clip you showed. Thanks Bob!
2:24 "I made a mistake, as you do when you make a guitar from a shovel."
Rob's fans incoming !

Nah but seriously, what an awesome build. Love the grittyness of the appearance. Thanks for uploading man!
awesome! Crazy build, and amazing to see Rob totally nail it too. I loved both videos. Great work guys :-)
I don't even play guitar but now I want to make one too. Awesome vid brah, keep it up.
7:06 - Plot twist, Bob: it was _Rob_ who sent me here 3:)
I'm really impressed by both your creativity and skill. _Really_ impressed. Kudos.
Thanks so much!
that's a good exercise in making something out of something you would never think of making it out of! if that makes any sence. but Great job Bob
The real Rob Scallon signature
I think Jimmy is rubbing off on you. Nice use of the ice pick. Keep up the good work.
That thing sounds AMAZING!!
Your videos are awesome. Me and my dad do all of your projects together. Keep up the good work!
+spooky5090 Thank you!!
The whole project is great, great fun to watch!
I guess, another idea of fixing the nut issue would be to use the "string tree", but you've chosen a way more creative path.
Cheers!
"So is it a good guitar?..No not really it's a shovel" Best line ever! LOL! Fun build. Next cigar box guitar!
:) Heard Rob playing it which is how I found your channel.
Awesome!
Nice job. I like the way you don't precisely measure everything but do a rough estimated and then go back and fine tune. I have done the same my whole life, always thinking - maybe I should measure stuff more before cutting :o).

Awesome UA-cam collaboration!
I hope you get a huge boost to your subscriber count.
I started this video thinking you were making a guitar similar to Rob's not the one he actually used haha.
Fantastic job.
