      pretty crazy that o rings are probably the cheapest part of these engines however they are the Achilles heel

    Hey Alex, I watch every single video of yours, almost since you start this channel.
    I have an interesting idea for a future episode - why not try contact the engine maker and ask him for interesting facts about the making or the designing of the engine? I believe that such a legendary manufacturing process (AMG engines with the maker's plate on them) will be quite interesting topic.
    Whish all the best and keep being one of the best automotive channels on the tube!

    Gotta admit I'm now back to looking at SL55s instead of SL65s after watching this. However seems like a great time to also do slightly higher spec cams (assuming they make them). And of course maybe a billet wheel upgrade for the turbos.
    Either way looking forward to more of this video series!

  • @RogerM88

    Why not rebuild it tougher? With a 3d metal print vacuum canister, replace the rubber seal with a copper washer, and replace some segments of the rubber lines near the engine with metal.

    • @chrisel2286
      @chrisel2286 3 роки тому +2

      Because you don't know if it will be better until you reassemble and test it for leaks.

    • @RogerM88
      @RogerM88 3 роки тому +5

      @@chrisel2286 this design with plastic and rubber lines, have a lot of issues due to the heat cycles. With metal parts near the engine, you would be more sure to prevent future leaks. The switch from a rubber seal to a cooper washer might not work. But a metal vacuum canister, and some segments of the rubber lines in metal, would prevent possible future leaks.

    • @chrisel2286
      @chrisel2286 3 роки тому +1

      @@RogerM88 I agree that replacing plastic and rubber parts with metal will improve longevity, but practically speaking, any improvement will require some testing. In this case, for the DIYer or home shop, that means fabricating your replacement parts and then installing them, reassembling the engine and testing it by running the car for a period of time and then, if there are issues, tearing it down and revising your plan. Since each iteration takes about 50 hours of over head labor, and this guy says that none of his Mercedes tech friends have had to do this job before, I'd be hesitant to risk trying to improve it. Instead, put in the factory parts which you know will last 10-15 years.

    I must be missing something as I cannot see how that O-ring which is internal to the entire housing could be part of an external leak. if it in fact this was the case would it not create pressure/leak into either the oil side or the coolant side which would mean it would have to pass the gasket as well?

    • @gedd6750
      @gedd6750 3 роки тому

      I was thinking pretty much the same thing.
      Would you just not loose oil pressure to the turbos and the oil leak back down in to "tank" ?
