- **UPDATED 10/7/11: EMA says this 1003 had issues and is now up and working again with the Jefferson County system**
Unfortunately, this 1003 was decommissioned THE DAY I went to record it during the April 12, 2011 test. Instead, you hear the Whelen 4004 do a quick burst. You can pretty clearly hear the other sirens in the system activate. Most heard are 2001's.

Please read the description and comments first. The Whelen is not replacing the T-bolt. It's owned by the water company nearby and used strictly for that, while the Thunderbolt is used for the Jefferson County outdoor warning system. If Jefferson County were to replace this siren, it'd most likely be with a 2001 or possibly Modulator, but definitely not a Whelen.
If failure was success . . . .
The building at Pope Street and Frankfort Avenue is no longer a fire station, I’m not sure what it is now.
It is a restaurant.
God, 2001 ambiance is very creepy, especially they're not all the same type.
TommyBNSF that’s how it is in my town we have mods and 2001s
What happened: The Vortex 4004 all of a sudden it stopped working.
both replaced with a single 2003
The sound of those tornado sirens is 2001s
I thought they didn't use the Whelen for weather warnings, since it's owned by the plant, which is why the 1003 was left there? They should just move it elsewhere for extended coverage. Great video nonetheless, love the ambiance and quality!
@Trocks797 It makes sense, now, that they can activate area by area due to polygon warnings instead of county wide warnings. It would be cool if they could somehow connect all the sirens on a GPS and then connect it to the iMap WeatherRadio app so that only sirens in the warned area or sirens that cover the warned area would be sounded.
Sorry about the outburst in the last post, I've traveled along Frankfort Ave. near Pope Street, the Fire station is a former Louisville Division of Fire & Rescue Station which housed TeleSquirt Co. #21, although the company has moved the building is still there, unknown whether or not the tornado siren is still at the location remains to be seen.
Where your outburst post? I want to see it and read it lol
Tbolt 1003s status: no longer active
Whelens status: no longer active
Wrong- Whelen is still active, and just had a new head installed.
@JMAN123436 The Whelen belongs to Crescent Hill and is not on the counties system. They wanted to make sure it was working, so they deactivated the t-bolt and tested the Whelen during the counties test so nobody would notice. Kinda confusing, eh?
I wish both the 1003 and the Whelen could do high/low at the same time!
I here every siren but the thunderbolt. W weird because the thunderbolt is not going on.
Lupe Valdez it has been fixed
I think that the loudest Thunderbolt heard may be the one at Dunn Elementary School at 2010 Rudy Ln, which I think is about 3 or 4 miles away from these two. It's a shame that they took the Pope Street Thunderbolt down. I hope they find a new location for it soon. I wish I knew where that really high pitched 2001-SRNB is. I'm thinking it may be the one at Barrett Middle School, but I'm not sure. It's one of only a fiew 2001's I'm interested in recording.
Hey guys: The Fire Station on Pope St. & Frankfort Ave. is "Not" a Volunteer Fire Station, It was in "Fact" a Former City of Louisville Fire Station, It Held TeleSquirt #21. Please in the near Future get it right.
@timeslip325 My guess is because the guy that was working on it at the time of the test either made a mistake or just wanted to make sure it received the signal from the EMA. He was working on it after the test was over.
What about the thunderbolt is it still active or was the whelen 4004 put there to replace it
I feel like I'm hearing a 4/5 port at 1:45
@squiddy7863 Your guess is as good as mine. I know they can activate area-by-area, so maybe they activated that one late? I just assumed during tests they activated the whole city a once. Not sure...
@murrfarms Thats exactly how it used to be....up till last week. And I am not sure why they changed it. In fact, I am not sure why they even bought the Whelen....that 1003 is VERY healthy from what I hear.
It's such a shame that the city of Louisville replaced 2 very healthy sounding Thunderbolts, and installed a 2001, personally I would have 2 healthy Whelen tornado sirens installed.
@computerdude5566 The county's map is off in more ways than one. They still show a siren at the VFD on Pope St, and that is not there anymore. They also have a few sirens labeled wrong. I don't know man...
@jw870206 That would be great if it worked right, but Louisville has faced a lot of criticism with the failed activations earlier in the year, so they are probably playing it safe lol
Are there, or were there in the past, any other 1003's in Louisville? I've only seen the 1000t's around when it comes to Thunderbolts here.
Thunderbolt has been replaced by a 2001 siren
tornado siren roubik no it is still there I saw it on maps on June 2019 street view
Sirens And Trains Of Kansas it’s not active
@Trocks797 Apparently someone finds Whelen's sirens to be superior to FS's. Fail!
This thunderbolt is the internet fame thunderbolt
OWS Crazy1 No that’s silverstreet
That is one creepy ambience
Nice video! What's with the 2001 that winds up late?
@razrramonel4077 Hey, no big deal man! With most of the sirens at VFD's here in Louisville, it is an easy mistake to make. But, if you take a look at my siren map for Louisville (link in description), you will see that A: it has been dismantled and B: it is labeled correctly there! Have a good day!
Trocks797 is it still up?
@@OWS_Crazy1 1003 was sick and was replaced by 1000t and then by 2001 130 whelen remain there
That's some erie ambience
Does the whelen have a broken rotator?
Wissota Sirens & Signals yes
And How come the whelen doesnt do the full test?
It’s not apart of the siren system. It’s owned by a power plant
hey how come the whelen and tbolt are not rotating?
t-bolt isn't on and whelen rotated for a second, stopped and rotated for a second the other way, hit its stopping point.
Yes it was just at the position where it turns the other way. It takes a while for it to reverse the rotation hence why it looked like it didn't rotate
Wow that's creepy ambiance
damn whelens
what was it that was going on that day in louisville?
@razrramonel4077 .......wow, relax.
its creepu
Stupid Whelen! Never liked those sirens...
Go home tbolt your drunk
The whelen is the drunk one. it didn't go for a full signal!
