I’m very concerned about all the poking and prodding performed on my eyes every three months by the ophthalmologist. I have mixed feelings about all eye drops prescribed and exams performed to patients that don’t fix anything! Will you do a series on this?
I recently experienced the exact same situation in Vancouver BC, minus the signature for declining the X-ray. They didn’t want to do a cleaning without one, but I insisted
I went in to get a cavity filled or a cap they did all tests including xrays then scheduled a different appt for proceedure. I go in for proceedure and was then told they had to do xrays with their brand new xray machine and i had to have my teeth cleaned or they would not fill cavity if i did not do this even tho i had just had it ALL done payed for the previous week. This doctor now has a big practice in the nearby city 6 months after scamming everyone in a small town. He is specializing in dentures, go figure, right.
They told me last time that the lead apron is no longer needed for doing x-rays as the radiation is so low. While they leave the room and press the button. Culling the herd continues.
Spoke to my dentist about fluoride.. His words were. No one actually needs toothpaste. You can use some bicarb and an olive or coconut oil. Also, he agreed that fluoride is poison!!! Also, that mouth wash is unnecessary and a scam... I expected resistance regarding these things.. High five to my dentist UK 🇬🇧☺️,
🇨🇦 hygienist here. If there's inflammation I usually recommend salt water rinse. As for toothpaste, yes just the action of brushing is alone is generally 👌 for those who want toothpaste I recommend anything with hydroxyapatite. Safer than fluoride. I appreciate a Dr who does right by their pts.
I was. Told that my child needs to get fluoride to protect teeth from getting carries and then anyway my child got carries and then got a lot of caries and needs a lot of fillings so..😢
It really is, sadly. I recently had MRIs done (with and without contrast).Went to see the specialist and he insists on taking x-rays of one of the areas in question. I asked why the x-ray was needed given that I had 3 MRIs done. Was told that's what they do. I realized then it was done to pad the bill because we have 'good insurance'. Specialist orders MRIs but then I need additional x-rays after the MRIs? BTW, this happened at a a well respected medical facility. It really tarnished my opinion of them.
Hi Suneel. I am a dental practitioner in Ireland and I am very much on board with your stance on medicine and dentistry. The problem as I see it is that our noble professions no longer belong to us. They have been usurped by government and authorities. We are pressurised to conform to regulation rather than allowed to use our own clinical expertise and wisdom. @@doodle3161 I was happy to google this for you! Manufacturer's of the dental anesthetics' have assured dentists that there are no added ingredients. However, recently the university of Colorado in August 2024 did a study confirming Graphene Oxide in very common dental anesthetic's. They stated further testing and research will be needed to understand the implications. There are many articles available online for you to research in depth. As well as many videos online put out by dentists in the profession.
No, they have been taken by the rich who own the government. You need to adjust your aim. we live in america and if more of us understood this we have a constitution that allows us to replace our government with people who will ignore the rich and regulate them if we wanted. Yes standard of care is another way of saying pipe line to profit. My daughters. Husband is a professor at the Dental School of medicine. Near retirement. He absolutely hates what financially hijacked Dentistry has to do to stay licensed. 90% of it is to boost pharmaceuticals and other services. But oral care products are for the most part more dangerous to over all physical health. Sans mouth wash. Sans toothpaste with antiseptic in them. Oral hygiene with antibacterial can cause high blood pressure as well as mess with digestive system. Your mouth is supposed to have bacteria. That is the first line of digestive tract. It’s also where all your nitric oxide is produced that keeps your blood vessels supple and relaxed and able to move blood around.
This does not explain why xrays are the standard procedure in places where they are provided for a token fee (something around 20 US dollars in my city), or are not billed to the client at all. On the contrary, the need to set up and maintain a separate xray room is a substantial part of initial investment and rent expense. If owners of small dental offices could do without it they certainly would. Perhaps it's there simply for CYA purposes ("see this post-RCT xray? it's perfect and your inflammation is your own problem...").
My experience with several dentists is that there are no honesty, lack of understanding of their training, and not just the money factor. If you want money you will see to it you become the best. One dentist told me beforehand the fillings will all fall of out, and it did within three days.. When it was redone for free by his co- worker, nothing fell out!!! So what is going on???? I spoke to a friend and was told this is the pattern his friends complain about. 🎉😮

I haven't gone to a dentist yet that will clean my teeth without updating xrays every time. My current dentist refused and when I protested, she claimed these were ADA guidelines that she has to follow. So I guess the ADA prefers people go without dental care completely if they won't or can't cough up hundreds of dollars each visit for unnecessary radiation contamination.
I wish though, my son would have his teeth cleaned, though. He doesn't brush them at all, he says that scratches his teeth.... My Dad probably did that and in his 50's had so many rotten teeth, they pulled them all out for dentures. He ate liquid food for months and loss a lot of weight. Teeth are important to chewing, of course. At least brush and floss.

I don't even bother asking. I know they swear by fluoride in the UK and nothing can be done about it. However, I talked to a dentist in another country I visit regularly and I learned that there are some health concerns regarding fluoride, like thyroid issues. But they still like it for other reasons.... Beats me.

This happened to me literally last Friday. Just went to the hygienist- she wanted to do x-rays. I refused. She thought I was out of my depth and spent a good amount of time telling me why I should. I listened but in the end, I still refused. Then…! At the end, she attempted to give me the fluoride treatment. Again, I said I prefer not but thank you. She looked bewildered and told me that the fluoride would strengthen my teeth and lessen sensitivity… Basically, we can just say ‘no’ and we don’t have to justify anything. ❤ from Portugal.
Good for you for standing your ground! This Happens to me and my family too! Every time. I had to sign a sheet when i declined x-rays,, they thought i was nuts. We also decline fluoride as its a Neuro toxin . Regardless, each time they push it. The hygienists always try to lather my daughters teeth in it and i have to say ,,NO THANK YOU. I commented above to foresthiker that fluoride ruins your mouth microbiome. So does the potassium nitrate that is in sensitive toothpastes. I started eating carnivore several years ago and the tooth sensitivity that I had for over 30 years went away. You know why? Carnivore got rid of the Inflammation because I was not eating carbohydrates. Carbs in any form turn to sugar in the body and that can cause inflammation in most people. Inflammation can strike people in different areas of their body.
The same happened to me (x-ray). I live in Manila, Philippines. I just left the clinic. Walked out. Dentist was trying to make me feel small and dumb because I said I've had too many x-rays done to my face and I don't want more.
I have never had my teeth cleaned by a dentist.. I use my peroxide, some flossing and I have all my teeth, except a couple at the very end of my mouth, at 78, I shall continue with my protocol. Thank you DR.
I think you don't understand what they do in a cleaning. Just saying. And you're missing teeth toward the back of your mouth? No offense, but you definitely have teeth and mouth problems!
I'm curious as to whether you ever had your wisdom teeth removed. As a society we have been led to believe they need to be removed except in certain rare cases, but it is solely driven by profit, and ignores the important role of wisdom teeth.
I started doing that after Dr. John Bergman recommended it. When I went for my cleaning, she told me I was a master brusher. I said thank you. I had only been doing it a couple of weeks. Didn't mention what I was doing.
If the Doctor is worried about X - rays , he should absolutely panic about the root- canals in his mouth, and so should everybody else with that work done in their mouths 😮😮😮
Please bear with this long story. I am 72. In 1975 I had a wonderful dentist who must have been around 60 or more. I asked him why he did not do X-rays. He told me, "Ron, a good dentist does not need to do an xray." So, I always remembered that. About 5 years later I was reading an article in Scientific America about the dangers Gamma radiation (the type of radiation used in med/dentist xrays). The article was very alarming; one you do not forget. It stated that Gamma rays are very harmful, and even low doses are potentially dangerous. So, I also remembered that. Then my family started to arrive in the early 80's and my children and I, of course, went to the dentist. I never liked the fact that Xrays were adiministered, but I kept quiet. Then the dentist started to do these Xrays that were called ["panoramic"] or something like that. I was told that the dentist needed to be aware of any potential malformations, etc. The strangest thing finally happened: The dentist told me that my son had a "perfect mouth" and never would need any braces. However, the next time my son went to the dentist they again did the 360 degree Xray on my son. I called and stated my concern. About two weeks later I got a letter from the dentist and he told me to find another dentist. My wife, I and our children had been going to him for almost 20 years. It was gross. Finally, I had a very good friend whose daughter got a brain tumor (I do not remember if it was malignant). She had surgery - I believe - at the University of Minnesota and recovered. The surgeon told her that her tumor most likely was caused by................"dental xrays". Thank you, Suneel, for your video. It struck a chord with me.
A good dentist would never say they don't need X-ray. They would say they don't need unnecessary X-rays. The only way to see your roots without opening the tooth and literally killing it in the process is by X-ray. Just doing the operation blindly is way, way, way worse approach. That's the true scam. Any X-ray should be justified, to have a point. Also it is true that Gamma radiation, or in fact any ionization radiation is harmful yes. But quantity matters, or the dose in other words. You get gamma radiation way more just by living. The scale matters! Let's give some perspective to the "danger". You sit hour in an airplane and that equals to one dental X-ray. One dental X-ray gives you around 0.005-0.01 mSv (0.000005 Sv) worth of radiation. You get more gamma radiation just by sitting on your couch. 1 mSv is what is considered to be normal safe exposure in a year. 100 mSv is required to get mild effect. 1000 mSv (or 1 Sv) is when you likely would get radiation sickness (totally curable btw.). 4-5 Sv is when you are in real danger, it potentially is lethal. At 10 Sv there is nothing anyone can do. And to add into that, the duration of exposure matters as well. For example NASA astronauts are limited to 1 Sv in their career. But because it is in such long period, they feel nothing at all. If you would get that dose in say a hour, you would be very sick. Flight attendants gets around 1.5 mSv dose every year (0.005 mSv was one dental X-ray). One full body CT scan is around 10-30 mSv. There are people getting 400 mSv annual dose without any effects (that's same as getting 200 dental X-rays every single day). People take this radiation scare really out of context.
Thank You, Ron for your story. I've had so many X-rays including those panorama ones. My parents took me to a "dental school" instead of a licensed dentist. So, they sorta practiced on me I guess. 😞
When I left home I had to find a new dentist. So I saw one near to my new abode. He examined my teeth and said all my front teeth needed fillings. I made an appointment for the following week and left. For the whole week I anguished over this appointment and finally I cancelled it. 49 years later my front teeth are fine. So it begs the question, were any of my dental procedures ever required? The only reason I see a dentist is to maintain the fillings they gave me. Scammers are among us in plain sight.
Nowadays some dentists are over treating. I went to one and and she wanted to replace two crowns, one of which was gold. I thought about it and eventually I said I would take the deep cleaning, which was covered by insurance. I don’t believe it was necessary, but I figured no damage could be done by a deep cleaning. It was nothing--no pain because my teeth are in good shape. I got a second opinion from another dentist about the other two procedures and decided to forego them. GO somewhere else and get a second opinion. Any good dentist will tell you if the tooth is intact and OK don’t drill into it.
Well if I have an infected tooth I would want my dentist to take an x-ray to see what brewing around the tooth also, what about sub-gingival calculus hardened plaque under the gum line , some x-rays are needed to view that .Do I wanted X-rays every time I get my teeth cleaned … No … what but I want a dentist to be thorough not half ass.
@@oceansurfgirl8805 But you must be able to TRUST them! I go TRHREE times a year to my dentist because I believe it is money well spent and I trust my dentist. Moreover I have not had anything but cleanings for years and years. So I figured something was off with this new dentist and I asked for and got a second opinion. What happened is that I changed health plans and my former dentist would not take the insurance I had so I had to shop around for a new dentist. It was the new dentist who wanted to do all these procedures. As they say trust but verify.
Same thing happened to me. Dentist told me I had multiple cavities,only had money to get 2 filled. Moved before I could go back. Followed up with a dentist in another state. Guess what! No cavities....
@RaindropsOnLichen if not absolutely necessary I never do an x ray! Although the NHS in France says it's a must for any cavity, extraction, root canal etc. I simply don't do it! It's my choice to not iradiate my pacients.

This!! I was a bit behind on my cleanings and because I was over 50 I think they thought I was an easy target. They said that I had “advanced” gum disease and would have to do special monthly cleanings for a year and other procedures that were recommended that insurance wouldn’t cover. I asked them to just do a regular cleaning and I’d think about the rest. “Oh no!!! We cant do a regular cleaning, there is too much liability!!” Left there and used salt and clove essential oil to brush my teary for several weeks. Went to a new dentist and they said my gums were great! It’s like dealing with a car salesman, everything is an upsale and free based. It’s ridiculous. Also, dental insurance is ridiculous. They get quote from insurance, you pay hundreds on your portion only for them to come back 3 months later to say you owe them hundreds more because there was no way of actually know what would be covered 🙄
This is exactly what happened to me too. They told me I had gum disease. Walked out without getting anything done or signing anything. Found reviews and similar complaints with this office. Went somewhere else and was told my gums and teeth were fine. I have found that about 95% of dentists out there are like that now. You have to be extra vigilant and do your homework. Surprisingly, I went to an eye doctor years ago who was like this running all sorts of tests and I ended up with a huge bill from it. I made a complaint and they removed the charges. Believe it or not, unnecessary surgeries happen all the time too at great expense and potential risks to the patient.
Thank you for bringing this up. I didn't go for dental cleaning for more than 10 years because of the mandatory x-ray in the US. Recently I noticed some tartar on my teeth, and I had to go in spite of the x-ray. My dentist demands a full mouth x-ray at every second dental cleaning. I'm a physician as well and I know that ionizing radiation is something to avoid if not absolutely necessary. I totally agree with you that this is a scam so that the dentist makes more money.
I found fresh pet liquid to keep pets' teeth clean works to soften plaque. I brush it on day one and day 2 I use a scraper and it all comes off. Makes it soft and easy to remove.
I live in California, my dentist does x-rays for a dental exam which are generally once or twice a year. I go in for cleanings every 3-4 months because of some gum issues, they've never tried to do x-rays for any of my cleanings.
Wow! You hit on my BIGGEST pet peeve with the medical system. My dentist insisted on X-rays, then told me I needed two crowns replaced but refused to show me the X-rays. They do this crap to bill insurance. My primary care doctor pulls this same crap. We all need to be more informed as patients.
That's why it costs so much to go to the dentist. They overcharge the insurance. My "health" insurance offers me 250.00 at the dentist office. Really? I have an upper denture. I need that replaced. 250 won't cover that
Dr Dhand. I just had a very similar situation. I only wanted a teeth cleaning. This is in NC. The assistants scheduled it and wanted to know how I would be paying. At that point they told me I’d be having X-rays. Likewise, I said I didn’t want X-rays- only a cleaning. They stepped away to speak with the dentist and then told me it was an ADA requirement. Yep. He said that. I told them I wouldn’t be coming and left. I called the ADA and of course, they said they could never require Dentists to do anything and that there was no requirement of X-rays. I contacted the dentist office to share with them the words of the ADA 😂😂. I think there is a 3 way tie between medical, dental and sadly vetrinary. Buyer beware!
That stinks ! My opinion is that we put doctors /dentists on a pedestal for so long that people feel intimidated by their supossed superior intelligence. I've worked in medicine for 30 years and the best doctors with the best diagnostic skills always admitted that it is not an exact science and there is a reason they call it "practicing medicine." I had a friend who's wife was needlessly dying in an ill-equipted hospital and he was intimidated and scared to speak up because there are signs everywhere stating that the patient and family members cannot intimidate, raise their voice or confront a hospital worker inder penaltyof law. With my friend's permission I went up there and got her transferred to get the care the first hospital didn't offer.
Thank you for bringing this issue to light. I've been standing my ground on x-rays for around 20 years now here in the U.S., but it's a struggle and many dentists simply refuse your business if you won't submit. Because of this and the astronomical cost of teeth scaling, I have only been to a dentist once in the past 8-9 years.
@@lizstromsnesdolz629 don't be dense. people who go to the dentist regularly also wear dentures - probably have a higher risk of having healthy teeth pulled, given a root canal or any number of unnecessary things. dentures have nothing to do with dentist visits and vice versa. many people can care for their own car, their own home and their own body without needing professional intervention if they have good habits and take proper care of what they have. For profit healthcare is just that - and it is "not" good healthcare -- when it is 'for' profiting.
It doesn't. My dentist is aware I cannot afford $400 for a cleaning and xrays but it is the law here in Texas that you have to have xrays at least every 2 years or you can't have routine maintenance like cleanings done. I don't have dental insurance. So instead I just can't have a cleaning that's supposedly so important and should be done twice a year.
I love your approach! We need to be 100 steps ahead of the scammers! We also need to do research for natural alternatives! Don't give in to these Dr Frankensteins! 😉
As a retired dentist, having practiced in a retirement community, I would do just that. Offer the patient to do the x-rays at N/C, if I felt that the benefit of doing so would outnumber the revenue lost.
I refuse to get them. I have a friend in Europe who says they only do breast ultrasounds over there. In the US they do mammograms and then if the tissue is too dense or they feel there may be an issue they do a diagnostic Ultrasound. Why not just do the ultrasound to begin with.....MONEY!
I remember a friend of mine went to USC dental school. All his friends were just so looking forward to finishing school and making lots of money. It seemed like that's all they cared about. In some ways, I'm not surprised by this dentist. I'm sure most of them out there are unnecessarily prescribing dental procedures that we don't even need. Thank you for sharing. To unnecessarily subject patients to harmful x-ray radiation is just another level of gross malpractice.
Thank you for bringing this up. I'm 61, and when I was a little girl, my Mom took me to the dentist regularly. She was a nurse and would never let the dentist do x-rays because of her concern about radiation. So clear back in the 60's the dentsts were pushing continual x-rays, even on kids. I'm thankful my Mom was looking out for me and also taught me from a young age to refuse things from professionals, it was an important life lesson.

Hi Melinda, In the context of the discussion we are talking about routine dental x-rays, not something specific regarding an illness or injury. In this short space, it's impossible to cover all the scenarios, but I'm grateful my Mom showed me by example that it's OK to not be intimidated by a professional into allowing a procedure that may not be necessary. It's always possible to think about it, change your mind, and go ahead with the procedure, but once it's been done, you can't undo it. Obviously in a life threatening situation you might need to just go with what the professional advise is, but that's not what is being discussed here.
I had exactly the same talk with my dentist and it appears that they can refuse to see you if you don’t comply with the protocol. The reasoning I was given is because cavities form where you can feel them with a pick, between teeth. I have a thyroid issue and they told me I’d have to get a note from my endocrinologist. Who I also don’t trust!
You are so spot on, Dr. Dhand! When I went for my last cleaning, I was told I MUST have the full panarama x-ray, since "I hadn't been in for 2 years." I have excellent dental health, and am very healthy, so during the pandemic, there was no way I went during that time. I simply went for a cleaning as you did. The only request I made was that I didn't want the hygienist to use the metal picks in between my teeth. I literally get goosebumps from head to toe and cannot tolerate it for a second. It's unnecessary in my case anyway. In my 59 yrs, I have 1 teeny filling @ age 17. That's it. While waiting for the dentist to come in, I had to use the restroom. Upon passing a counter, the hygienist and the dentist were looking at my (unnecessary!!) x-rays, and whispering. They stopped abruptly as I passed. I noticed that, believe me. When the dentist came in, he immediately began to gaslight me as if I were a 'difficult patient' because I didn't want the metal picking done. His behavior was condescending, and exaggerated. The gaslighting was so extreme, I couldn't shake it the rest of the day, and I'm a very confident individual. I called and spoke to the office manager, told her of the incident, and that I would Never return, nor would I Ever refer another to that office. Stand your ground folks, and follow your instincts!! 😉
Were you able to find another dentist that would comply? If you did was it an older dentist? I've been to dental schools and know that the students are being taught this jargon. I'm praying for RFK in the Trump admin. to be able to bring major change to this medical establishment. Honestly it's just pure evil what is happening to our society.
Thank you. In US, I've never had x-rays as part of a cleaning. Previously went to a dentist who said "Let me see if you've still got the 'good insurance' ", before I see if you need some work. I left and never returned.

I'm in UK & no insurance - there is usually a dental plan but my teeth been a saga so I'm not eligible for plan, which is fine, I pay as I go, it's expensive so have to compromise sometimes, but been lucky finding genuine people more in the holistic line of dentistry, tho still hard to be sure what they're doing is good but the several dentists I've seen don't do extras when they know my situation.. money indeed 🙃
I’m in the US and don’t have dental Insurance so if they take unnecessary x-rays I have to make payments out of pocket. Then, because I choose not to get further in debt i don’t get anymore dental work done til the bill is paid off.
If you have fillings, crowns or bridges, you will get x-rays once a year in the US. X-rays will pick up fillings pulling away from the tooth, tooth decay, bone issues and so many other problems that, if left untreated, could result in more costly or medically serious services later. This protects the Dentist as well as the Patient…and no… I’m not a Dentist and do not work for one. Common sense.

America can only be healthy when people start taking charge of their health. The information has been available for decades if people were interested. Most people want to be lazy and then have someone "magically" fix their problem after it has occured.
My dentist opened multiple offices and became millionaire in no time! I used to have minimum of two X rays each visit and then I refused since I watched your program! Thank you Doctor!
@@lauriewelsh8554They better not be, that's illegal. You have one set of x-rays a year. So if for some reason you need them later, they will be outed as frauds and insurance companies will drop them. So I doubt they would.
This kind of thing just happened to me months back! I went in for a simple cleaning with no issues whatsoever that I was complaining about. The hygienist actually got quite snippy when I repeatedly refused to get an xray first. I was polite, but firm...yet she kept pushing. I couldn't believe it. Finally, when she realized I was NOT going to bend to her pressure, she seemed exasperated and got snippy. She curtly told me "Well! Don't blame us if anything bad happens!" So ridiculous. Then, sure enough, the very first thing out of the dentist's mouth to her when he walked into the room(as he looked at the screen) was "no x-ray??" I was absolutely disgusted. The whole system needs an overhaul!
I had the same experience. I have no issues they would not do a cleaning if I did not have my yearly X-rays. They said they would not do the cleaning without the X-ray. Period.

This is a great video to get out there. I attended a Dentist in Australia to get my teeth cleaned, and was told I needed X-rays. I agreed to the X-ray being the first time in a while and had the clean. The dentist recommended 6month check up, I went back in 12 months for another clean to be told I needed X-rays first. I said I had an X-ray 12months ago and don’t need one every time I go to the dentist. I felt pressured to agree but stood my ground, I was then told because we had taken so long she couldn’t do all the clean today as she had other patients. I paid for the clean and never went there again.
You are a good man, and i listen to your every word. 70 male. 2 years ago i weaned off 3 heart meds, 2 opioid pain meds, gout meds....been clean now for a year and feeling much better. No medical since early 2019....pure blood.
You have just gotten a new subscriber, Doc! I have had the same experiences with a former dentist that wouldn't accept me as a new patient if I didn't do x-rays. I had no oral complaints, just wanted a cleaning. My son's pediatric dentist hates me because I ask questions and refuse unnecessary treatments and x-rays. I am not a "doctor" but I retired from a long 22 year multidisciplinary career in health sciences. I have enough medical knowledge to make informed decisions. When I took a health administration course in college, my perspectives changed once I realized that many hospitals are for-profit. The for-profit system prefers uninformed consumers that submit to predatory protocols for profit bottom lines. Gotta stay outta the red. Truthfully, capitalism is a religion and people worship mammon. The predatory market controls the people’s behaviors. Thus, society is full of paycheck predators preying on vulnerable consumer sheep that follow the sponsored pied-pipers deemed "experts." Basic human survival instincts are non-existent in modern civilizations.
@ hmmm. I’m in Asia, here they still accept "no". I suppose the xray fee is their entire profit margin in the west. Or the lion's share. Those machines must be expensive too, almost certainly bought with installments. Terrible incentive!
Same happened to me. I went for teeth cleaning, and they insisted on xrays. I let them. And after they "found" that I have 10! teeth that "needed" to be "fixed". Mind it, the year before I had not "problem teeth" after not going to a dentist for 3 years, and this year I "had" 10! teeth that "needed to be fixed". I know my teeth! There were times when I would not go to a dentist for 10 years, and no problems. I told them that they are running a scam and that I am not going back or letting them touch my teeth. Some dentists are SCAMMERS!
well done for asserting yourself! I would have done the same. I stopped going to the dentist over 3 years ago and for the first time in my life, I have no dental problems! I use sunflower oil pulling twice a day for 20 minutes each, and clean my teeth with natural soap instead of toothpaste. I am healthy and so is my family as they do the same. Problems solved!
My dentist tries to get x-rays every year, but I push back and only allow it every 2-3 years. (In his defense, I have had a bone loss problem in two isolated areas and have enough of a tartar build-up problem that it's probably justified. Strangely enough, I NEVER used toothpaste after I was about 8 years old, and NEVER had a cavity until I was about 45 years old!)
I relocated to a rural area and went to a new dentist for an exam and cleaning. They asked how long since my last visit. I said 7 years. I was scolded that I needed to have an exam every 6 months. The dentist did not find anything wrong with my teeth or say anything about having gingivitis or gum disease. The dental hygienist remarked about my lapse in dental care. After he checked my gums for pockets he said I had too many and it would be better to have my gums like a collar or turtle neck to be easier to clean. When he started scraping my teeth I was having sharp pains and I complained. He said it was the tartar I was feeling cutting my gums. He kept wiping the instrument and his fingers on the bib. When he was finished with the polishing he gave me a mirror to look at my teeth without removing the bib. I was totally horrified by the amount of blood on the bib and the fact that he let me see it. I left the office feeling brutalized and thought he got some kind of perverted satisfaction by punishing me for my "delinquency". It was several more years before I went back and there was a new hygienist, thank God!
@@AngelBaby11117hi, that is basically normal because the tartar builds up past the gum line. I get my teeth cleaned once every 10 to 12 years. I was born in a mining town that has high levels of fluoride in the ground water. My teeth are extremely hard. I’m 62 and have zero cavities. That tartar can only be removed past the gum line with scraping and pressure. My gums bleed too when the cleaning is being done. That is a good sign you have healthy gums. I would not freak out too much. You were not abused. Just know that is a normal reaction when the tartar is getting removed from the under the gum line. Cheers !
This is my dentist’s protocol as well but I always refuse, unless I have pain, which is next to never. They already know not to even ask. And forget about any fluoride treatments 🙅🏻♀️ 🇺🇸

Yep, and in terms of pain management, we are all addicted or want to make $ selling our medication. In reality, we have a right to be out of pain and have a right to a certain quality of life!
I totally agree Dr. Dhand. So many not needed dental exrays. No wonder people get cancer in their head and neck and thyroid!! I will tell you this is even more pronounced in the veterinary offices for pets! I just wanted a dental for my little 4.5# chihuahua who was a bit elderly. The vet insisted that I give her no less than SIX vaccines before he would clean her teeth!! Imagine giving such a tiny animal six shots at one time?? I refused. I told him I would allow ONE vaccine and for him to pick one! He finally relented and they cleaned her teeth. These forced services are not right! I was sitting in the vet office when a customer came in and asked for flea medicine for their dog. The receptionist looked on the chart and informed the customer that she could not get flea meds because her dog had not been in for his check up and was behind on his vaccines!! Can you imagine this? These vets have sold their practices to corporations and these "protocols" have suddenly become their policy when it never was before. It's horrid. I know that six shots would have probably killed my little dog. What are these people thinking? Common sense has taken flight!! And concern for science and health of patient, whether human or animal, is of NO priority.
And watch out for those pet vaccines. They are now developing and using the MRNA technology in the vet world. 6 vaccines would be outrageous on any animal, but a small senior dog is crazy. Good for you.

I have had that same conversation every time I go in for cleaning. I allow them only if something hurts. It has been 20 years since my last set of ex rays. Just another scam to charge insurance. I just don’t want my head radiated unless needed.
Dental hygienist here . Waiting until a tooth hurts means the decay has gotten deep enough to reach the nerve which in turn means your tooth cannot be fixed with a simple filling and now needs a root canal and crown to save it . Or possibly you have gum disease that has caused u a gum access which means u have lost bone around the tooth which is a chronic infection and possible loss of the tooth…
@@tamb7587....interesting. because all of my fillings were done in the 1970s and 1980s without any root canals. And the cavities were evidenced by my pain, not by any x,-rays. Back then, cleanings weren't even heard of.
in the USA there is a "STANDARD OF CARE" principal that was taught to the dental world. To me it boiled down to "Cover your butt so you wont be sued". This tactic used to place the fear of health professionals into a patient to get more $ out of the visit. Certainly not ethical from many points of view. Policies, regulations, best interest groups have made this puddle of murk we wonder through for much of our existence. Sad to have had to deal with manipulative insurance companies and other such nonsense in my working years of dental hygiene. God bless and good health.
That was a great video. I'm a 70yr old women in good health and great teeth . When i moved to Florida, trying to just get my teeth cleaned was virtually impossible without getting x rays. The scam runs deeper . Several hygenest then run a text poking my gums and measuring how deep they go. I then get an analysis that gives me options on how much money I am willing to spend to prevent further gum loss. It was such BS 😂
That hygienist who was 'poking' your gums was competent and responsible, which not all are. She was assessing your mouth to get a baseline and the recorded measurements assist during the cleaning and for future evaluation. As a hygienist myself, I have worked on countless patients who did not have a conscientious hygienist like yours, and their mouths conditions were shamefully diseased.
My friend was told he had deep pockets in his gums. He went home and daily dipped dental floss in hydrogen peroxide and carefully worked on those pockets until his follow-up visit. When he returned all the plaque was gone and his gums were pink and healthy.
Hygienists are probing deep pockets around your teeth that if left untreated lead to infection, bone loss and eventually your tooth will fall out. How much money you spend depends on how much do want to keep your teeth. You spend now and have your real teeth last much longer or you can just get on the express train to dentures. Which aren’t cheap, wear out and have to be replaced not to mention all the money you”lol spend on goop to keep them from falling out while talking and eating. And… if you think “I’ll just get implants…” No you won’t. You won’t be a good candidate because you have terrible degenerative bone loss from the untreated periodontal disease that you didn’t want to pay for when it was a minor issue. 😂
So many people delude themselves about the implant route following the loss of teeth due to perio induced bone loss. It's often not possible, or vastly expensive and risky if smoking / diabetes/ poor hygiene habits continues. Faced with these realities they run to the lawyers to see who they can sue for negligence and obtain damages from their dentists. If your notes and records don't accurately record Screening for periodontal disease , pocket charts, xrays to show evidence of bone levels, a diagnosis indicating staging and a treatment plan, then guess what? The dentist who just did a little clean may well be footing the bill for failure to diagnose. After a long and stressful court case potentially. A colleague of mine hung herself due to the stress caused by such a case.
I agree. Another online doctor (MD) said that he refuses the whole mouth X-rays when he's only having one tooth worked on. The dentist wanted full mouth X-rays and he told them "No thank you, just X-ray the one tooth that's getting worked on". As far as primary caregivers, I don't participate in that either. When I have a need to see a doctor, I make an appointment. I do not participate in endless tests, procedures and needless medications. I appreciate your videos.
I'm 55, never had a cavity or any dental issues in my life. I go for cleanings every 6 months and they always want to do those x-rays at least once per year. I was told "it let's us see if there are any cavities starting and we can catch them early". My last visit was in April. After they did the xray the dentist (who never addressed me but stayed behind my head talking to the hygienist) said "yeah, there is a change in her tooth. Go ahead and make her an appointment for a filling." and then he left. Never discussed my thoughts about it. I said no, no. The tooth feels fine to me, I'm going to try to heal it. Still not having any problems.... The name of the game is "drill, fill and bill"..
🇨🇦 hygienist here. If there's no history of decay, typically 24-36 months for xrays, but xrays are clients specific. If its great oral hygiene and no health complications, good diet there is no reason for 12 months. I hate it when dentists don't take the time to explain to patients what's going on. But I have worked with some where that's what happens. Before you do anything have the hygienist explain why you need the restoration. If she can't, I suggest perhaps finding a new dr you can trust, and takes the time to explain, they do exist. There's different stages of decay, incipient caries where it's less than 50% in the enamel (outer layer). It doesn't require any attention (it can remineralize). But to help remineralize it with things like hydroxyapatite and being aware of acid exposure. If it's more than 50% into the enamel and growing rapidly is when it's usually recommended treatment because if it gets into the second layer which is dentin the decay rapidly takes over, and if it hits the nerve, the infection takes over which requires a root canal. (For the price of root canals and infection rate after most dentist I've worked with recommend implants instead if all else healthy, and no history of smoking or unstable diabetes) Ultimately ask questions, if it doesn't feel right it probably isn't. @@milliethemillinator3154 just like xrays being client specific. So are cleaning. If you're a person who has a good diet, takes proper care of your teeth, no history of unstable diabetes ect. Typically I recommend 6-9-12 months. Depends on the person, everyone has different needs. Ive seen some pts they hadn't been in 2 years and immaculate oral hygiene I was beyond impressed. But also, I've seen others every 3 months (heavy deposit, not great oral care, cluster of health issues) and they put me to work.

Thanks for sharing!!! I just had this EXACT experience when I was home in the U. S. I retired and no longer carry dental insurance as I’m on Medicare. My long-term dentist told me I couldn’t have my teeth cleaned unless I had full mouth X-rays every 1-2 years!! So I went to a new dentist and they said they couldn’t clean my teeth unless they took X-rays first. So, I was in Italy and went to an excellent dentist and he laughed when I told him what my dentist said. He said, “Americans always complicate matters. I wouldn’t do an X-ray unless there was a reason to, like pain for instance”. They do not require regular Xrays. BTW, the dentist where I was in Washington State said it was “the law” that X-rays and exam are required initially before they can work on you!!!! I’d sure like to know if that is true!! 7:26 You are exactly right!! I said no thanks, and when I went to Italy recently, I had my teeth cleaned and paid a third of what Id be charged
I would love to know if it’s also REALLY required by law to do x-rays before cleaning. I haven’t seen a dentist in 2+ years now; have been eating a mostly carnivore diet for 1-1/2 years, and my mouth is in excellent shape. Most of my tooth sensitivity to cold has left. I also drink RO filtered water, so I avoid fluoride. I carefully brush and floss every night. I also brush with a tooth powder that’s made of nano particle hydroxyapatite.
X-rays are required to assure there are no pathologies, decay and to check bone level and bone health. The insistence on either doing the X-ray or signing the form of refusal is simply to prevent any future liability IF there was a problem that went undetected. The proliferation of lawsuits in the US is behind all of this in my view. It seems silly to have an X-ray if you feel there is nothing wrong, however periodontal disease is called the silent disease for a reason, and abscess can be silent until it’s not as well. All that said, if you floss your teeth ~correctly~ daily, have routine 6 month (more frequent if you have advanced periodontal disease) cleanings and take 2-4 bitewing X-rays every 1-2 years and a full mouth set every 5-7+ years that’s all you need! I’ve been a Dental Hygienist for over 35 years, I also say NO to fluoride.
This happened to me too, I told my dentist that I want x-rays every 5 years and they were ok with that. Some people just do whatever they’re told regardless of the consequences
Thank you for your caring and honesty coming from a Dr. I went to a new dentist recently for teeth cleaning as I have new insurance and they were on the list. When I arrived they had to take x-rays before they did anything and the cleaning was to be done in a couple weeks. The assistant said she had to take 36 x-rays, what? Not sure if they did all 36 but they definitely did at least 20 to 25, I was floored, my former dentist never took this much. They did find a small cavity in a molar. 2 weeks later I went in for the teeth cleaning. they wanted to take more X-rays what? I refused and she did clean my teeth and gave me fluoride which I spit out. She stopped me and said please don't spit out the fluoride and I said no, I don't want it in my mouth . This explains why they wanted to take a lot of X-rays and then again in 2 weeks and as we know nothing changed in my mouth. This is so evil exposing people to more x-rays just for the money. Whatever happened to "do no harm"?
I had a situation where I was admitted into the hospital with a micro-bowel perforation from diverticulitis about 10 years ago. I was given a blood thinner, because it was protocol. I had no idea, so I went along with the first TWO injections (I believe they are/were about 4 hours apart). I asked why I was getting it, and was told it was for people who weren't getting up and moving around, which I was. I told the second nurse giving me the injection "I COULD (walk around often) get up, if that was what I needed to do, so why was I still be getting this injection?" ** SHE SHRUGGED HER SHOULDERS ** As in "I dont know" She could not give me a reason for it? The next nurse (when the shift changed) who came in, I asked her the same question. She came in, CLOSED THE DOOR TO MY ROOM, and proceeded to tell me that I could refuse ANY medical services I wanted. I HAD NO IDEA! I always thought that "doctors have my BEST interest at heart, why would they do anything they didn't NEED to do?" I didn't take anymore of those injections! AND I could not tell you how much I appreciated that nurses honesty! I will always remember her/that situation! ALSO, now, I don't just do what my Dr says, I QUESTION EVERYTHING. I am truly my OWN advocate! BUT - my reasoning is because I understand that Drs are over worked & they have TONS of patients (I am not their only one). I should do what's best for me, with the help from my Dr, They only sit with me for a short period of time, I should know what is going on with my body and do my VERY best to do what I can to stay healthy. It is NOT my Drs responsibility, it is mine.
Was going to a new dentist in an area I moved to for years. Nearly EVERY time I'd go for the cleaning... suddenly I would have cavities that needed attention. Had a few over many years before, but never anything like once I started with this new dentist. Each time, 2 to 4 areas that were needing work - allegedly. Once the waiting room was suddenly expanded with brand new huge TV's, new furniture, large area for the 2 or 3 assistants working the phone and greeting people all got out of complete control, it became obvious why there were always problems that needed work when I'd go. I finally just stopped about a year and a half ago, found a new dentist and the ONLY thing that has needed to be done since, ironically, was repair of the work that the other dentist had done to fix some of the fillings that had chipped. I have always refused the flouride "treatments", every time, everywhere. It's a freaking neurotoxin, so, no thanks.

My wife and I left a dentist after a few visits for a similar reason - the number of "cavities" he was finding in people was abnormal. I still believe I was given a crown I didnt need within those few visits until we figured it out and split. Unfortunately the age of the professional or "expert" has past, especially in the medical industry where hearing about profit over people has become pretty common. Trust but Verify
And they add fluoride to drinking water… the Flouride Action Network just won a legal case in September AGAINST flouride in water… it’s been in court for 7 years!!!
You’re blaming the dentist, but I think it’s the lawyers and the litigious society we live in. I’ve been a hygienist for some years now and go through this scenario everyday. I personally feel that bitewing x-rays every year and a full set every five years is appropriate, and I have them done on myself that way. If we as clinicians could see all the problems that arise between the teeth and in the jaw by just looking in the mouth and listening the patients, then there would be no need for x-rays at all. But we can’t and we’ll never know about what we can’t see. However, I also agree that patients should be able to make their own choices. The problem is: can a patient consent to what is considered malpractice? From a legal perspective the answer is no. There is a “standard of care”(set forth by lawyers and dental societys) and if the dentist fails to meet that standard, they are opening themselves up to possible litigation. Not all dentists see x-rays as a cash cow, and are looking to fleece you. The dentist I work for now has often times done them for free if he knows that a patient is in financial distress. Dr. Dhand, you said that you have had a root canal. Perhaps you could have avoided that by catching a small cavity on a x-ray, before it got big enough to reach the pulp. But, you’re a big boy and should be able to make that choice of either: (x-ray and it’s potential side effects) or (no x-ray and potentially failing to detect decay, infections, various diseases related to the bone including cancers that could be life threatening.) Anyway, just my two cents and hope this helps.
In Canada I could go to my dentist and just get a cleaning. Here in Florida they want to do 14 xrays, a panoramic scan and gum test. If you do not pass you need a deep cleaning. This is all an insurance scam. If you just want a cleaning say you have no insurance.
Not just that they destroyed all my teeth by removing all Amalgam fillings at once before they told me that the insurance didn't pay for the alternative materials I needed...they also removed the root tip on the wrong front tooth. No reaction to my waving and making noise at all and of course you can't pull away while having a running milling tool in your mouth😡
My last dentist utterly destroyed my life when I was a teenager. I wanted to end myself I was in so much pain. I remember distinctly when I had my wisdom teeth ripped out (he refused to knock me out, kept me awake during the whole thing which was stressful for a teenager.) they put TWO gauze in my bottom left wound. They only took out one. I brought it up, they said nah they don't see an extra gauze. Ok I guess I imagined it even though I was wide awake. Well cut to a few months later I have a dry socket, and the left side is not healing. I tell them about the gauze, they say "nah it's just tissue that's healing. Cut to another year later and the hole is open, it stinks of rot, and I'm telling them they left a gauze. Ok, dentist finally decides to test to see if I'm right, yes there is a gauze. He pulls it out, and out comes an explosion of blood. Dry socket took forever to heal, and I was miserable and unhappy until I was 18 years old. THEN, two years later they tell me I have two cavities, they can't see anything on the x-ray, but they decide to go in anyway because there is an occlusal stain on my left molar. That cavity never healed right, and the doctor told me he could do a root canal, and also that I had 16 other cavities. At that point I was done, and lived with the sensitivity of my back molar until it finally became manageable. It's been almost 20 years, I have not been to the dentist since. I guess those 16 cavities just disappeared because I feel fine and it's been a good long while.

I commented they look the same as the other teeth, but he insisted they were dead, and had to go. When I think back, I should have got a second opinion. After that, he kept asking when I was going to get the implants to replace them, at $5000.00 EACH!! It's ALL about the money these days!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬
I have had too many crappy dentists. One told me I had to have an X-ray or he wouldn’t be my dentist anymore. TRUTH. Also a friend was told by a dentist that he needed $10000 worth of work. My friend went to another dentist for his next cleaning and funny…he didn’t need a thing ! And hasn’t since! That was 8 years ago!
Thank you, Dr. Suneel! What a great video. I clicked on it by accident, not realizing it had anything at all to do with the dental industry here in the US. and it was just what I needed to hear. After the last two years, where I had to see several different dentists (specialists) because I wanted the best and the ones I wanted didn't take my insurance, I ended up having a lot of X-rays. Each dentist insisted on taking a whole new batch. Finally, deep cavities filled, crowns in place, root canals over with, and I am now wearing invisible aligners (braces) to have my teeth straightened, a lifelong dream. But because of your video, I have decided not to visit yet another new dental office to have my teeth cleaned because it will mean more X-rays, the whole full-mouth deal. I am already having regular X-rays every three months at the orthodontist (these are needed), so I will forego going to yet another new dentist for teeth cleaning. Oh yes, been there, done that. In 2020 during pandemic, we made appointments for dental check ups in Wyoming because we refused to wear masks. We are in Colorado. Got there, all was good initially but was told that we needed to set up deep root cleaning ( both of us) and there was no need for a routine dental. We left. Six months ago, more of the same. Went to my regular dentist in Colorado and was told I needed a deep root cleaning. They still planned on doing my regular cleaning but '"ran out of time" and it never happened. I'm almost 74, an RN and in excellent physical condition. I've followed all the principles you espouse over the last 40 plus years. I've never had a tooth pulled ( aside from wisdom teeth as a teenager), never had a toothache, do all the preventative care that can be done. HAVE fallen for the xray scam for years but no more! I think the "key" for their insistence for procedures is my husband and I have double dental coverage from our previous employers and they see a gravy train in us. I swear I am never going back.
You can clean above the gumline, and you can also clean the space below the gum line which is called root planing. (You know how pop corn husks get caught under your gum - that space, but it can get much deeper than a popcorn husk, sometimes well over 10 mm below the gum line.) Sometimes it's called deep cleaning. An instrument is inserted under the gum line and the root surface is scraped with it to remove diseased root, hard calculus buildup, plaque… Think of it like debriding a badly infected wound which removes the infection and infected tissue and prevents further disease and damage. I am a hygienist and I've seen countless new patient with severely diseased gums and bone, sometimes loose teeth as a result. They may not have been going to a practice, or have been going to a practice for many years and their practitioners did not address the disease. Some people were upset because they thought I was the scammer so I would give them a mirror and show them the damage to their guns and I would let them see me pull up the debris from under their gums. Grossed some of them out. Part of my point is there is scamming everywhere and it can be hard to know if it's happening to you. For the RN above I couldn't say for sure but everything you've said about your health and self-care has only a little bearing on whether you need root planning or not. Maybe your original practitioner should have been doing it all along and wasn't, or somebody is trying to scam, or although not common in your age group - your mouth could be perfectly fine. You could get an assessment by another practitioner and they should be able to tell you the measurements of your gums, and show you bone loss and calculus on the x-rays. If the disease was really bad they could show you your teeth are loose just by wiggling them.
@@bluejayspeanut Get a bit of food under the gum is painful, the only time I go mouthwash & toothbrush crazy. Doing that must be torture. Plus it leaves a gap for a while, room for even more food to get trapped. A vicious circle.

Root canal teeth got infected do to they only put in a temporary filling that they did not tell me was temporary those 2 teeth severely infected which went into the jaw bone and now I don’t even look into a mirror anymore because all I see is how ugly I am not that I was beautiful but to see that ugly reflection of myself overwhelms me with such a horrible emotional pain inside. I now see and worse feel ugly.

You hit the nail on the head! I went to the dentist to have my tooth fixed and they wanted to do panoramic x-rays and then another kind of partial panoramic. Nothing to do with what I came for then they wanted to do deep cleaning and they said they wouldn’t do any dental work until I did the deep cleaning series which was about $3000. Needless to say, I never went back to that Dentist what a scam they training their staff to push the needless procedures to rack up more money. I’m done with it.

Yes, it’s ridiculous. First, you know they just have to do the bite-wing x-rays, then this 360 degree panoramic x-ray that isn’t covered by insurance (not covered last time I went). I haven’t been back. My out-of-pocket was $1500.
I have had this exact same experience in my dentist's office! I am not a doctor, and they had such a negative reaction to this that I ended up feeling bad. I said I didn't want the radiation unless it was absolutely necessary ( and I had no problems with my teeth). They finally agreed but said in a scolding voice that I would have to have it next time. Thank you so much for talking about this, because they talked to me as if I was being difficult because I don't want x-rays every time!
This is the issue you need to understand, just because you don't feel pain DOES NOT mean your teeth are fine. How do we know it is necessary if we can't see cavities in between the teeth with out the xrays. All I can say is I hope you are flossing!

No radiation is good, but sometimes necessary. Go online; a quick search on a few reputable sites will give you a really good idea of what the exposure is, and what an average yearly exposure is from the environment. Then form your opinion.

Wow.. you got all that right. I’m 76 and have had to go through this protocol for years and years. I’ve decided no more. I will refuse X-rays unless I have an issue. I go to Dr once a year. Get labs drawn and that’s it. As an ex-nurse I review them myself. The further we stay away from medical “care” the better off we are. Thats my motto and I’m sticking to it!
I hope you at least have mammograms. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer that was found with a mammogram. She didn't have any lumps or other symptoms. The cancer was found early enough that she only needed a lumpectomy. She was lucky.

It’s the love of money . My dentist retired and my cleaning charge increased from $65 ( and I refused X-rays ) to almost $400 with the new dentist and her fancy office and xray equipment ( I had X-rays done ) . What a scam . I’m finding a new old school dentist .
Had the same dentist in Miami for 20+ years. Never had that 360° X ray there, was Never offered a deep cleaning with root scaling either. Here in Tallahassee the hygienist was not interested in doing a regular cleaning after I refused a 2 session deep cleaning to be paid out of pocket Looking for an old school HONEST dentist here in Tallahassee One that is skilled enough to do his own root canals too. I have been refusing dental x-rays for the past 5 years. My dentist retired and a new dentist took his place. I was told by this new dentist if I don't get x-rays he will no longer be my dentist! They have always had me sign a waiver saying that I refused x-rays. He said that he can't give me the care I deserve if I don't have x-rays. I told him that I have no problems but they still wanted me to do the x-rays. I have to pay out of pocket for any dental and it seemed like an unnecessary expense. I just figured this was a way for them to drum up some money and find something wrong so they could fix it.
Go carnivore and you can forget about the dentist. You barely have to brush your teeth if you are full carnivore. Search it up, there are testimonies of people’s experiences.

Yes, I knew from your introduction to the X-ray requirement that they "needed" an X-ray in order to bill the insurance for as much as they could get away with. I have stopped going to my Dr. because the ladt time I made an appointment they told me to go online to their website, download & complete a 2-page questionnaire which would be required in order to see the Dr. I know what happens to "private" health data these days & it's anything but private. So I declined the appointment. What a let down. I'm in my early 70s. I love your caring & honest program. God bless you.
Im a british dentist and a subscriber. In the usa, i find overtreatment takes place , in the uk, i find patients are often undertreated. To some extent economics is involved. However, for a new patient , xrays are indicated to assess a baseline for the oral tissues. Detection of cavities, gum disease, bone levels etc. If sunil had his teeth cleaned but gum disease went undiagnosed, the dentist would be open to litigation . To some extent its watching your own back. Risk assesment for decay has to be assesed. The higher the risk ie previous level of fillings, the more the risk etc so x rays would be indicated. To decline a cleaning unless x rays are taken would mean that true informed consent was not being sought. A good practioner should justify an x ray exposure . In the uk we have guide lines from the royal colledge of surgeons which explain x ray criteria. In any case, overuling the patient is assault in my book. In the past xrays were performed far too often. The new approach is more patuent centred , in the uk anyway
As a single mother of three ( father passed away , when i had a 3 n half , a 2 year old , and 3 months pregnant ) . I could not afford a dental private practice . Which its why i nearly always had to use the government dental hospitals. This has been one of my most regretted things i have done in my life . Because now i have hardly any teeth left , due to The criminal treatments i got in these types of places ( Australia) . Three times , i had a dentist pull teeth out , when there was no need , and he/they ( twice ) put his foot on the chair , to use more force to pull it out , which i practically fainted. my tooth/teeth were in no need for an extraction . This left me with so much fear of dentist , which in turn put me in a worst disadvantage situation . 😪
This happened to me last week. I was called in for a cleaning, and had no issues with my teeth. Before I could sit in the treatment chair, the hygienist announced that she would take a series of X-rays before getting started on the cleaning. After talking my ear off, the dentist told me it would be illegal to clean my teeth if they didn't X-ray me first. That clever assertion added insult to injury. At that point, I walked out, because he could not permit me to decline without admitting that he had just lied. I think they have convinced themselves that there is zero risk to radiation, regardless of the patient's combined exposure. To this young dentist, the X-ray is just another carefree source of revenue. The patient's preference and freedom to choose are of no interest.

Thank you, Dr Dhand. I'm a RN in rural Minnesota, US. I was to the dentist for a cleaning, as well, recently. The hygienist reminded me I had not gotten x-rays for the past 2 years. I told them I don't want x-rays, as I have had no issues with my teeth (plus I have to pay out of pocket for this). I had to sign a paper stating I declined the x-rays. At the end, the hygienist told me my teeth looked excellent. What a bunch of extra expense. If I was having a problem, I would of course, want x-rays. But my teeth, are thankfully, very good. This is a racket to make more money. I got out of that appointment for $135, thankfully.
Your teeth may look excellent from the outside, but unless your hygienist has x-ray vision you don't know what is on the inside. Maybe it's fine? Maybe not? What a patient "feels" in their mouth is a very poor indicator of what is going on. What we see clinically tells part of the story, but not all of it. I can't tell you how many times I've seen patients with very large cavities and infections that are completely asymptomatic and not visible clinically. That being said, I think you should be able to make that choice to have x-rays or not, just understand that your dentist might not be able to diagnose present decay, infections, diseases that have the potential to be more costly(both financally and health wise) than if they were caught early.
Thank you for posting this! I live in Canada and have refused dental X-rays as well but have never been asked to sign a refusal form. Unfortunately, it’s only since cvd that I really starting questioning health care protocols- so I have many years of being brainwashed to recover from!
I’m a dentist in Sweden. I generally agree that exposure to radiation, including dental x-rays, should always be clinically and diagnostically motivated. Sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised if some clinicians insist on X-rays for financial and billing reasons rather than solely for the health benefit of the patient. However there can be and often is diagnostic value and information in X-rays also from en dental cleaning situation. A couple of examples: 1. Fillings with incorrect shape or rough surface attracting dental plaque. 2. Widened and/or deepened periodontal pockets/periodontium caused by dental plaque. However, these conditions though would unlikely be present without also deepened periodontal pockets that can be detected by probing the gums clinically BEFORE opting for the X-rays. Therefore in conclusion I agree with Dr Dhand that the dental X-rays shouldn’t be done as a routine without a prior clinical reason.
Finally an actual dentist on here who knows what the value of X-rays are and while they shouldn’t be done excessively and unnecessarily, they are critical to quality care. I would prefer anyone working in my mouth with sharp instruments and drills in a very small space to have as accurate of a view as possible. Also without a panoramic X-ray I would have never know that my seemingly non existent upper wisdom teeth were actually in my sinus cavity which was why I was having chronic sinus infections. How would I have ever known without an X-ray?
I'm in Sweden too. Every year no matter which dentist I go to, (I've moved a few times last 30years), they do yearly x-rays of the whole mouth -all teeth as a routine. I'm amazed you don't as it seems to be protocol here... Where are you located?

@@65silvanina Same for me (also in Sweden). The x-rays today use digital technology and have much less radiation than before. I think that is why they consider it safe.
Personally, I'd rather know in advance if there's a problem and would be pre-screened any day The sooner you catch a problem, the sooner it can be caught and addressed I'm all for a pre-screening just to make sure there's no serious problems that MIGHT need attention LATER If you don't do your pre-screenings, what if something's found too late and there's nothing they can do? This is why I personally am all for pre-screening, but it should be at the patient's consent The doctor can ask, and the patient has the option to choose Prescreening will always be the way to catch potentially serious problems early, and I'm all for it, but I need the option to choose if I need it Dentistry though, is Hands-On, so they NEED to KNOW for your safety if you have a serious problem that needs addressed before the cleaning so they don't end up hitting a painful spot you may not even know you have Remember, a no dentist wants to hurt their patients by hitting a spot that patient may not know they have

This radiation is being transmitted into sqashed breast tissue. Look into the increased rates of breastcancer. Do some research and make an informed choice. I will never have another mammogram. I've seen very interesting research and made that decision.
Same thing happened to me in the US. I left the office because they wouldn't proceed with the cleaning without the x ray. Most Americans completely capitulate to anyone with a title and they were baffled by my refusal
It’s not a title. It’s an educated professional taking care of you. A cleaning appointment also includes an examination of the health status of your mouth. That can’t be done without seeing between and inside of teeth.
OMG! Thank you! From the states here. You are so right. I have been battling this for years! Had to change dentist because I refused X-rays that didn’t need to be done. The dentist said if I refused I would have to find another dentist. So I did. It never made sense to me to get X-rays that I didn’t need. Im going to send this to my new dentist.
Uk here - I’ve had this argument with my dentist for years. I’ve explained that other health conditions mean I have to have X rays and CTs so don’t want more X rays unnecessarily. They say it’s to see if a problem is looming. It’s now on my notes no X-rays unless I have a dental issue but it’s an awkward conversation each time. So too was my refusal of prescription toothpaste with higher fluoride. I was laughed at by the assistant for saying I had concerns and didn’t want it. I stand my ground
Have had exactly the same with my dentist and I gave exactly the same reasons for refusing. I had a private dentist who insisted on doing by annual x rays, and refused a radiation apron when I asked for one. I was intimidated into going along with this until he retired. At the new dentist, I said they could take one set of initial x rays and that was it. Somehow I have been persuaded into a second set - there won't be any more.
yeah it is awkward indeed, and we shouldn't have to live like this, we have the right to refuse treatment without having it turned into a debate with every single provider. This is why I hate going to doctors, and my politeness is very short to deal with all the BS and the sour looks they give you.
Oh my gosh!! I am so glad to hear a physician agree with what I've said for years!!! I have refused Xrays for years and actually had to find a different dentist who would accommodate my decisions as a consumer of their service. As an aside, I got xrays taken when i was in my 20s and was told I had 7 "cavities". I didn't allow them to do anything to me that day and I never went back to that dentist. I'm now 63 and to this day, I have all my teeth and NO fillings. Dentistry is a total scam in my opinion.

I’m very concerned about all the poking and prodding performed on my eyes every three months by the ophthalmologist. I have mixed feelings about all eye drops prescribed and exams performed to patients that don’t fix anything! Will you do a series on this?
I recently experienced the exact same situation in Vancouver BC, minus the signature for declining the X-ray. They didn’t want to do a cleaning without one, but I insisted
I went in to get a cavity filled or a cap they did all tests including xrays then scheduled a different appt for proceedure. I go in for proceedure and was then told they had to do xrays with their brand new xray machine and i had to have my teeth cleaned or they would not fill cavity if i did not do this even tho i had just had it ALL done payed for the previous week. This doctor now has a big practice in the nearby city 6 months after scamming everyone in a small town. He is specializing in dentures, go figure, right.
They told me last time that the lead apron is no longer needed for doing x-rays as the radiation is so low. While they leave the room and press the button. Culling the herd continues.
My brother had only enough cash on him for a cleaning. He too was told he must have an X-Ray or the cleaning could not be done. He left.
Spoke to my dentist about fluoride.. His words were. No one actually needs toothpaste. You can use some bicarb and an olive or coconut oil. Also, he agreed that fluoride is poison!!! Also, that mouth wash is unnecessary and a scam... I expected resistance regarding these things.. High five to my dentist UK 🇬🇧☺️,
🇨🇦 hygienist here. If there's inflammation I usually recommend salt water rinse. As for toothpaste, yes just the action of brushing is alone is generally 👌 for those who want toothpaste I recommend anything with hydroxyapatite. Safer than fluoride. I appreciate a Dr who does right by their pts.
I was allowed to diss the Fluoride wash they wanted to give me. For these same reasons.

I was. Told that my child needs to get fluoride to protect teeth from getting carries and then anyway my child got carries and then got a lot of caries and needs a lot of fillings so..😢

It really is, sadly. I recently had MRIs done (with and without contrast).Went to see the specialist and he insists on taking x-rays of one of the areas in question. I asked why the x-ray was needed given that I had 3 MRIs done. Was told that's what they do. I realized then it was done to pad the bill because we have 'good insurance'. Specialist orders MRIs but then I need additional x-rays after the MRIs? BTW, this happened at a a well respected medical facility. It really tarnished my opinion of them.

The problem as I see it is that our noble professions no longer belong to us. They have been usurped by government and authorities. We are pressurised to conform to regulation rather than allowed to use our own clinical expertise and wisdom.

@@doodle3161 I was happy to google this for you! Manufacturer's of the dental anesthetics' have assured dentists that there are no added ingredients. However, recently the university of Colorado in August 2024 did a study confirming Graphene Oxide in very common dental anesthetic's. They stated further testing and research will be needed to understand the implications.
There are many articles available online for you to research in depth. As well as many videos online put out by dentists in the profession.

Yes standard of care is another way of saying pipe line to profit. My daughters. Husband is a professor at the Dental School of medicine. Near retirement. He absolutely hates what financially hijacked Dentistry has to do to stay licensed. 90% of it is to boost pharmaceuticals and other services. But oral care products are for the most part more dangerous to over all physical health.
Sans mouth wash. Sans toothpaste with antiseptic in them. Oral hygiene with antibacterial can cause high blood pressure as well as mess with digestive system. Your mouth is supposed to have bacteria. That is the first line of digestive tract. It’s also where all your nitric oxide is produced that keeps your blood vessels supple and relaxed and able to move blood around.

This does not explain why xrays are the standard procedure in places where they are provided for a token fee (something around 20 US dollars in my city), or are not billed to the client at all. On the contrary, the need to set up and maintain a separate xray room is a substantial part of initial investment and rent expense. If owners of small dental offices could do without it they certainly would. Perhaps it's there simply for CYA purposes ("see this post-RCT xray? it's perfect and your inflammation is your own problem...").
My experience with several dentists is that there are no honesty, lack of understanding of their training, and not just the money factor. If you want money you will see to it you become the best.
One dentist told me beforehand the fillings will all fall of out, and it did within three days.. When it was redone for free by his co- worker, nothing fell out!!! So what is going on???? I spoke to a friend and was told this is the pattern his friends complain about. 🎉😮

I haven't gone to a dentist yet that will clean my teeth without updating xrays every time. My current dentist refused and when I protested, she claimed these were ADA guidelines that she has to follow. So I guess the ADA prefers people go without dental care completely if they won't or can't cough up hundreds of dollars each visit for unnecessary radiation contamination.
Good maybe we can get the price to go down on dentistry so we can all have a beautiful smile. Dentists charge to much… lol even for fluoride
I wish though, my son would have his teeth cleaned, though. He doesn't brush them at all, he says that scratches his teeth.... My Dad probably did that and in his 50's had so many rotten teeth, they pulled them all out for dentures. He ate liquid food for months and loss a lot of weight. Teeth are important to chewing, of course. At least brush and floss.

This happened to me literally last Friday. Just went to the hygienist- she wanted to do x-rays. I refused. She thought I was out of my depth and spent a good amount of time telling me why I should. I listened but in the end, I still refused. Then…! At the end, she attempted to give me the fluoride treatment. Again, I said I prefer not but thank you. She looked bewildered and told me that the fluoride would strengthen my teeth and lessen sensitivity… Basically, we can just say ‘no’ and we don’t have to justify anything. ❤ from Portugal.
Good for you for standing your ground! This Happens to me and my family too! Every time. I had to sign a sheet when i declined x-rays,, they thought i was nuts. We also decline fluoride as its a Neuro toxin . Regardless, each time they push it. The hygienists always try to lather my daughters teeth in it and i have to say ,,NO THANK YOU. I commented above to foresthiker that fluoride ruins your mouth microbiome. So does the potassium nitrate that is in sensitive toothpastes. I started eating carnivore several years ago and the tooth sensitivity that I had for over 30 years went away. You know why? Carnivore got rid of the Inflammation because I was not eating carbohydrates. Carbs in any form turn to sugar in the body and that can cause inflammation in most people. Inflammation can strike people in different areas of their body.
The same happened to me (x-ray). I live in Manila, Philippines. I just left the clinic. Walked out. Dentist was trying to make me feel small and dumb because I said I've had too many x-rays done to my face and I don't want more.

I'm curious as to whether you ever had your wisdom teeth removed. As a society we have been led to believe they need to be removed except in certain rare cases, but it is solely driven by profit, and ignores the important role of wisdom teeth.
I started doing that after Dr. John Bergman recommended it. When I went for my cleaning, she told me I was a master brusher. I said thank you. I had only been doing it a couple of weeks. Didn't mention what I was doing.

Please bear with this long story. I am 72. In 1975 I had a wonderful dentist who must have been around 60 or more. I asked him why he did not do X-rays. He told me, "Ron, a good dentist does not need to do an xray." So, I always remembered that. About 5 years later I was reading an article in Scientific America about the dangers Gamma radiation (the type of radiation used in med/dentist xrays). The article was very alarming; one you do not forget. It stated that Gamma rays are very harmful, and even low doses are potentially dangerous. So, I also remembered that. Then my family started to arrive in the early 80's and my children and I, of course, went to the dentist. I never liked the fact that Xrays were adiministered, but I kept quiet. Then the dentist started to do these Xrays that were called ["panoramic"] or something like that. I was told that the dentist needed to be aware of any potential malformations, etc. The strangest thing finally happened: The dentist told me that my son had a "perfect mouth" and never would need any braces. However, the next time my son went to the dentist they again did the 360 degree Xray on my son. I called and stated my concern. About two weeks later I got a letter from the dentist and he told me to find another dentist. My wife, I and our children had been going to him for almost 20 years. It was gross. Finally, I had a very good friend whose daughter got a brain tumor (I do not remember if it was malignant). She had surgery - I believe - at the University of Minnesota and recovered. The surgeon told her that her tumor most likely was caused by................"dental xrays". Thank you, Suneel, for your video. It struck a chord with me.

A good dentist would never say they don't need X-ray. They would say they don't need unnecessary X-rays. The only way to see your roots without opening the tooth and literally killing it in the process is by X-ray. Just doing the operation blindly is way, way, way worse approach. That's the true scam. Any X-ray should be justified, to have a point.
Also it is true that Gamma radiation, or in fact any ionization radiation is harmful yes. But quantity matters, or the dose in other words. You get gamma radiation way more just by living. The scale matters! Let's give some perspective to the "danger". You sit hour in an airplane and that equals to one dental X-ray.
One dental X-ray gives you around 0.005-0.01 mSv (0.000005 Sv) worth of radiation. You get more gamma radiation just by sitting on your couch. 1 mSv is what is considered to be normal safe exposure in a year. 100 mSv is required to get mild effect. 1000 mSv (or 1 Sv) is when you likely would get radiation sickness (totally curable btw.). 4-5 Sv is when you are in real danger, it potentially is lethal. At 10 Sv there is nothing anyone can do.
And to add into that, the duration of exposure matters as well. For example NASA astronauts are limited to 1 Sv in their career. But because it is in such long period, they feel nothing at all. If you would get that dose in say a hour, you would be very sick. Flight attendants gets around 1.5 mSv dose every year (0.005 mSv was one dental X-ray). One full body CT scan is around 10-30 mSv. There are people getting 400 mSv annual dose without any effects (that's same as getting 200 dental X-rays every single day).
People take this radiation scare really out of context.

When I left home I had to find a new dentist. So I saw one near to my new abode. He examined my teeth and said all my front teeth needed fillings.
I made an appointment for the following week and left. For the whole week I anguished over this appointment and finally I cancelled it.
49 years later my front teeth are fine. So it begs the question, were any of my dental procedures ever required? The only reason I see a dentist is to maintain the fillings they gave me.

Nowadays some dentists are over treating. I went to one and and she wanted to replace two crowns, one of which was gold. I thought about it and eventually I said I would take the deep cleaning, which was covered by insurance. I don’t believe it was necessary, but I figured no damage could be done by a deep cleaning. It was nothing--no pain because my teeth are in good shape. I got a second opinion from another dentist about the other two procedures and decided to forego them. GO somewhere else and get a second opinion. Any good dentist will tell you if the tooth is intact and OK don’t drill into it.
Well if I have an infected tooth I would want my dentist to take an x-ray to see what brewing around the tooth also, what about sub-gingival calculus hardened plaque under the gum line , some x-rays are needed to view that .Do I wanted X-rays every time I get my teeth cleaned … No … what but I want a dentist to be thorough not half ass.

Moreover I have not had anything but cleanings for years and years. So I figured something was off with this new dentist and I asked for and got a second opinion. It was the new dentist who wanted to do all these procedures. As they say trust but verify.
It really happened to me, teeth filled that didn't need to be. That was 45 years ago.
Same thing happened to me. Dentist told me I had multiple cavities,only had money to get 2 filled. Moved before I could go back. Followed up with a dentist in another state. Guess what! No cavities....
I'm a dentist in France. I don't do an x-ray without a good reason or if I have a doubt, and never for a cleaning! Oh my God!

This!! I was a bit behind on my cleanings and because I was over 50 I think they thought I was an easy target. They said that I had “advanced” gum disease and would have to do special monthly cleanings for a year and other procedures that were recommended that insurance wouldn’t cover. I asked them to just do a regular cleaning and I’d think about the rest. “Oh no!!! We cant do a regular cleaning, there is too much liability!!” Left there and used salt and clove essential oil to brush my teary for several weeks. Went to a new dentist and they said my gums were great! It’s like dealing with a car salesman, everything is an upsale and free based. It’s ridiculous. Also, dental insurance is ridiculous. They get quote from insurance, you pay hundreds on your portion only for them to come back 3 months later to say you owe them hundreds more because there was no way of actually know what would be covered 🙄
This is exactly what happened to me too. They told me I had gum disease. Walked out without getting anything done or signing anything. Found reviews and similar complaints with this office. Went somewhere else and was told my gums and teeth were fine. I have found that about 95% of dentists out there are like that now. You have to be extra vigilant and do your homework. Surprisingly, I went to an eye doctor years ago who was like this running all sorts of tests and I ended up with a huge bill from it. I made a complaint and they removed the charges. Believe it or not, unnecessary surgeries happen all the time too at great expense and potential risks to the patient.
Report them. This happened locally and a doctor list his license as a result. He was recommending very expensive work.
Thank you for bringing this up. I didn't go for dental cleaning for more than 10 years because of the mandatory x-ray in the US. Recently I noticed some tartar on my teeth, and I had to go in spite of the x-ray. My dentist demands a full mouth x-ray at every second dental cleaning. I'm a physician as well and I know that ionizing radiation is something to avoid if not absolutely necessary. I totally agree with you that this is a scam so that the dentist makes more money.
I found fresh pet liquid to keep pets' teeth clean works to soften plaque. I brush it on day one and day 2 I use a scraper and it all comes off. Makes it soft and easy to remove.

I live in California, my dentist does x-rays for a dental exam which are generally once or twice a year. I go in for cleanings every 3-4 months because of some gum issues, they've never tried to do x-rays for any of my cleanings.
Wow! You hit on my BIGGEST pet peeve with the medical system. My dentist insisted on X-rays, then told me I needed two crowns replaced but refused to show me the X-rays. They do this crap to bill insurance. My primary care doctor pulls this same crap. We all need to be more informed as patients.

They have to show you the x-rays. In fact, I have a copy of every x-ray I have ever had since 1970. They always make me a copy.

Dr Dhand. I just had a very similar situation. I only wanted a teeth cleaning. This is in NC. The assistants scheduled it and wanted to know how I would be paying. At that point they told me I’d be having X-rays. Likewise, I said I didn’t want X-rays- only a cleaning. They stepped away to speak with the dentist and then told me it was an ADA requirement. Yep. He said that. I told them I wouldn’t be coming and left. I called the ADA and of course, they said they could never require Dentists to do anything and that there was no requirement of X-rays. I contacted the dentist office to share with them the words of the ADA 😂😂.
I think there is a 3 way tie between medical, dental and sadly vetrinary. Buyer beware!

That stinks ! My opinion is that we put doctors /dentists on a pedestal for so long that people feel intimidated by their supossed superior intelligence. I've worked in medicine for 30 years and the best doctors with the best diagnostic skills always admitted that it is not an exact science and there is a reason they call it "practicing medicine." I had a friend who's wife was needlessly dying in an ill-equipted hospital and he was intimidated and scared to speak up because there are signs everywhere stating that the patient and family members cannot intimidate, raise their voice or confront a hospital worker inder penaltyof law. With my friend's permission I went up there and got her transferred to get the care the first hospital didn't offer.
My policy is very simple I do NOT trust no doctor, no dentist, and no Vet. Period.

I've been standing my ground on x-rays for around 20 years now here in the U.S., but it's a struggle and many dentists simply refuse your business if you won't submit. Because of this and the astronomical cost of teeth scaling, I have only been to a dentist once in the past 8-9 years.

For profit healthcare is just that - and it is "not" good healthcare -- when it is 'for' profiting.

It doesn't. My dentist is aware I cannot afford $400 for a cleaning and xrays but it is the law here in Texas that you have to have xrays at least every 2 years or you can't have routine maintenance like cleanings done. I don't have dental insurance. So instead I just can't have a cleaning that's supposedly so important and should be done twice a year.

As a retired dentist, having practiced in a retirement community, I would do just that. Offer the patient to do the x-rays at N/C, if I felt that the benefit of doing so would outnumber the revenue lost.

I refuse to get them. I have a friend in Europe who says they only do breast ultrasounds over there. In the US they do mammograms and then if the tissue is too dense or they feel there may be an issue they do a diagnostic Ultrasound. Why not just do the ultrasound to begin with.....MONEY!

I remember a friend of mine went to USC dental school. All his friends were just so looking forward to finishing school and making lots of money. It seemed like that's all they cared about. In some ways, I'm not surprised by this dentist. I'm sure most of them out there are unnecessarily prescribing dental procedures that we don't even need. Thank you for sharing. To unnecessarily subject patients to harmful x-ray radiation is just another level of gross malpractice.
Thank you for bringing this up. I'm 61, and when I was a little girl, my Mom took me to the dentist regularly. She was a nurse and would never let the dentist do x-rays because of her concern about radiation. So clear back in the 60's the dentsts were pushing continual x-rays, even on kids. I'm thankful my Mom was looking out for me and also taught me from a young age to refuse things from professionals, it was an important life lesson.

In the context of the discussion we are talking about routine dental x-rays, not something specific regarding an illness or injury. In this short space, it's impossible to cover all the scenarios, but I'm grateful my Mom showed me by example that it's OK to not be intimidated by a professional into allowing a procedure that may not be necessary. It's always possible to think about it, change your mind, and go ahead with the procedure, but once it's been done, you can't undo it. Obviously in a life threatening situation you might need to just go with what the professional advise is, but that's not what is being discussed here.

I had exactly the same talk with my dentist and it appears that they can refuse to see you if you don’t comply with the protocol. The reasoning I was given is because cavities form where you can feel them with a pick, between teeth. I have a thyroid issue and they told me I’d have to get a note from my endocrinologist. Who I also don’t trust!
You are so spot on, Dr. Dhand! When I went for my last cleaning, I was told I MUST have the full panarama x-ray, since "I hadn't been in for 2 years."
I have excellent dental health, and am very healthy, so during the pandemic, there was no way I went during that time. I simply went for a cleaning as you did. The only request I made was that I didn't want the hygienist to use the metal picks in between my teeth. I literally get goosebumps from head to toe and cannot tolerate it for a second. It's unnecessary in my case anyway. In my 59 yrs, I have 1 teeny filling @ age 17. That's it.
While waiting for the dentist to come in, I had to use the restroom. Upon passing a counter, the hygienist and the dentist were looking at my (unnecessary!!) x-rays, and whispering. They stopped abruptly as I passed. I noticed that, believe me.
When the dentist came in, he immediately began to gaslight me as if I were a 'difficult patient' because I didn't want the metal picking done. His behavior was condescending, and exaggerated. The gaslighting was so extreme, I couldn't shake it the rest of the day, and I'm a very confident individual.
I called and spoke to the office manager, told her of the incident, and that I would Never return, nor would I Ever refer another to that office. Stand your ground folks, and follow your instincts!! 😉

I’m in the US and don’t have dental Insurance so if they take unnecessary x-rays I have to make payments out of pocket. Then, because I choose not to get further in debt i don’t get anymore dental work done til the bill is paid off.
If you have fillings, crowns or bridges, you will get x-rays once a year in the US. X-rays will pick up fillings pulling away from the tooth, tooth decay, bone issues and so many other problems that, if left untreated, could result in more costly or medically serious services later. This protects the Dentist as well as the Patient…and no… I’m not a Dentist and do not work for one. Common sense.

This kind of thing just happened to me months back! I went in for a simple cleaning with no issues whatsoever that I was complaining about. The hygienist actually got quite snippy when I repeatedly refused to get an xray first. I was polite, but firm...yet she kept pushing. I couldn't believe it. Finally, when she realized I was NOT going to bend to her pressure, she seemed exasperated and got snippy. She curtly told me "Well! Don't blame us if anything bad happens!" So ridiculous. Then, sure enough, the very first thing out of the dentist's mouth to her when he walked into the room(as he looked at the screen) was "no x-ray??" I was absolutely disgusted. The whole system needs an overhaul!

This is a great video to get out there. I attended a Dentist in Australia to get my teeth cleaned, and was told I needed X-rays. I agreed to the X-ray being the first time in a while and had the clean. The dentist recommended 6month check up, I went back in 12 months for another clean to be told I needed X-rays first. I said I had an X-ray 12months ago and don’t need one every time I go to the dentist. I felt pressured to agree but stood my ground, I was then told because we had taken so long she couldn’t do all the clean today as she had other patients. I paid for the clean and never went there again.

You have just gotten a new subscriber, Doc! I have had the same experiences with a former dentist that wouldn't accept me as a new patient if I didn't do x-rays. I had no oral complaints, just wanted a cleaning. My son's pediatric dentist hates me because I ask questions and refuse unnecessary treatments and x-rays. I am not a "doctor" but I retired from a long 22 year multidisciplinary career in health sciences. I have enough medical knowledge to make informed decisions. When I took a health administration course in college, my perspectives changed once I realized that many hospitals are for-profit. The for-profit system prefers uninformed consumers that submit to predatory protocols for profit bottom lines. Gotta stay outta the red.

Same happened to me. I went for teeth cleaning, and they insisted on xrays. I let them. And after they "found" that I have 10! teeth that "needed" to be "fixed". Mind it, the year before I had not "problem teeth" after not going to a dentist for 3 years, and this year I "had" 10! teeth that "needed to be fixed". I know my teeth! There were times when I would not go to a dentist for 10 years, and no problems. I told them that they are running a scam and that I am not going back or letting them touch my teeth. Some dentists are SCAMMERS!
well done for asserting yourself! I would have done the same. I stopped going to the dentist over 3 years ago and for the first time in my life, I have no dental problems! I use sunflower oil pulling twice a day for 20 minutes each, and clean my teeth with natural soap instead of toothpaste. I am healthy and so is my family as they do the same. Problems solved!
My dentist tries to get x-rays every year, but I push back and only allow it every 2-3 years. (In his defense, I have had a bone loss problem in two isolated areas and have enough of a tartar build-up problem that it's probably justified. Strangely enough, I NEVER used toothpaste after I was about 8 years old, and NEVER had a cavity until I was about 45 years old!)

I relocated to a rural area and went to a new dentist for an exam and cleaning. They asked how long since my last visit. I said 7 years. I was scolded that I needed to have an exam every 6 months. The dentist did not find anything wrong with my teeth or say anything about having gingivitis or gum disease.
The dental hygienist remarked about my lapse in dental care. After he checked my gums for pockets he said I had too many and it would be better to have my gums like a collar or turtle neck to be easier to clean.
When he started scraping my teeth I was having sharp pains and I complained. He said it was the tartar I was feeling cutting my gums. He kept wiping the instrument and his fingers on the bib.
When he was finished with the polishing he gave me a mirror to look at my teeth without removing the bib. I was totally horrified by the amount of blood on the bib and the fact that he let me see it.
I left the office feeling brutalized and thought he got some kind of perverted satisfaction by punishing me for my "delinquency". It was several more years before I went back and there was a new hygienist, thank God!
@@AngelBaby11117hi, that is basically normal because the tartar builds up past the gum line. I get my teeth cleaned once every 10 to 12 years. I was born in a mining town that has high levels of fluoride in the ground water. My teeth are extremely hard. I’m 62 and have zero cavities. That tartar can only be removed past the gum line with scraping and pressure. My gums bleed too when the cleaning is being done. That is a good sign you have healthy gums. I would not freak out too much. You were not abused. Just know that is a normal reaction when the tartar is getting removed from the under the gum line. Cheers !

I totally agree Dr. Dhand. So many not needed dental exrays. No wonder people get cancer in their head and neck and thyroid!! I will tell you this is even more pronounced in the veterinary offices for pets! I just wanted a dental for my little 4.5# chihuahua who was a bit elderly. The vet insisted that I give her no less than SIX vaccines before he would clean her teeth!! Imagine giving such a tiny animal six shots at one time?? I refused. I told him I would allow ONE vaccine and for him to pick one! He finally relented and they cleaned her teeth. These forced services are not right! I was sitting in the vet office when a customer came in and asked for flea medicine for their dog. The receptionist looked on the chart and informed the customer that she could not get flea meds because her dog had not been in for his check up and was behind on his vaccines!! Can you imagine this? These vets have sold their practices to corporations and these "protocols" have suddenly become their policy when it never was before. It's horrid. I know that six shots would have probably killed my little dog. What are these people thinking? Common sense has taken flight!! And concern for science and health of patient, whether human or animal, is of NO priority.
People should start using their brains and just say NO. Also call them out on their nasty little tricks.
And watch out for those pet vaccines. They are now developing and using the MRNA technology in the vet world. 6 vaccines would be outrageous on any animal, but a small senior dog is crazy. Good for you.

Dental hygienist here . Waiting until a tooth hurts means the decay has gotten deep enough to reach the nerve which in turn means your tooth cannot be fixed with a simple filling and now needs a root canal and crown to save it . Or possibly you have gum disease that has caused u a gum access which means u have lost bone around the tooth which is a chronic infection and possible loss of the tooth…

in the USA there is a "STANDARD OF CARE" principal that was taught to the dental world. To me it boiled down to "Cover your butt so you wont be sued". This tactic used to place the fear of health professionals into a patient to get more $ out of the visit. Certainly not ethical from many points of view. Policies, regulations, best interest groups have made this puddle of murk we wonder through for much of our existence. Sad to have had to deal with manipulative insurance companies and other such nonsense in my working years of dental hygiene. God bless and good health.
That was a great video. I'm a 70yr old women in good health and great teeth . When i moved to Florida, trying to just get my teeth cleaned was virtually impossible without getting x rays. The scam runs deeper . Several hygenest then run a text poking my gums and measuring how deep they go. I then get an analysis that gives me options on how much money I am willing to spend to prevent further gum loss. It was such BS 😂
That hygienist who was 'poking' your gums was competent and responsible, which not all are. She was assessing your mouth to get a baseline and the recorded measurements assist during the cleaning and for future evaluation. As a hygienist myself, I have worked on countless patients who did not have a conscientious hygienist like yours, and their mouths conditions were shamefully diseased.
My friend was told he had deep pockets in his gums. He went home and daily dipped dental floss in hydrogen peroxide and carefully worked on those pockets until his follow-up visit. When he returned all the plaque was gone and his gums were pink and healthy.
Hygienists are probing deep pockets around your teeth that if left untreated lead to infection, bone loss and eventually your tooth will fall out. How much money you spend depends on how much do want to keep your teeth. You spend now and have your real teeth last much longer or you can just get on the express train to dentures. Which aren’t cheap, wear out and have to be replaced not to mention all the money you”lol spend on goop to keep them from falling out while talking and eating. And… if you think “I’ll just get implants…” No you won’t. You won’t be a good candidate because you have terrible degenerative bone loss from the untreated periodontal disease that you didn’t want to pay for when it was a minor issue. 😂
So many people delude themselves about the implant route following the loss of teeth due to perio induced bone loss.
It's often not possible, or vastly expensive and risky if smoking / diabetes/ poor hygiene habits continues.
Faced with these realities they run to the lawyers to see who they can sue for negligence and obtain damages from their dentists. If your notes and records don't accurately record Screening for periodontal disease , pocket charts, xrays to show evidence of bone levels, a diagnosis indicating staging and a treatment plan, then guess what? The dentist who just did a little clean may well be footing the bill for failure to diagnose. After a long and stressful court case potentially.
A colleague of mine hung herself due to the stress caused by such a case.

I agree. Another online doctor (MD) said that he refuses the whole mouth X-rays when he's only having one tooth worked on. The dentist wanted full mouth X-rays and he told them "No thank you, just X-ray the one tooth that's getting worked on". As far as primary caregivers, I don't participate in that either. When I have a need to see a doctor, I make an appointment. I do not participate in endless tests, procedures and needless medications. I appreciate your videos.

I worked as a Dental Technician in the 80’s, 90’s, and that never happened then! WOW!
I'm 55, never had a cavity or any dental issues in my life. I go for cleanings every 6 months and they always want to do those x-rays at least once per year. I was told "it let's us see if there are any cavities starting and we can catch them early". My last visit was in April. After they did the xray the dentist (who never addressed me but stayed behind my head talking to the hygienist) said "yeah, there is a change in her tooth. Go ahead and make her an appointment for a filling." and then he left. Never discussed my thoughts about it. I said no, no. The tooth feels fine to me, I'm going to try to heal it. Still not having any problems.... The name of the game is "drill, fill and bill"..
🇨🇦 hygienist here. If there's no history of decay, typically 24-36 months for xrays, but xrays are clients specific. If its great oral hygiene and no health complications, good diet there is no reason for 12 months.
I hate it when dentists don't take the time to explain to patients what's going on. But I have worked with some where that's what happens. Before you do anything have the hygienist explain why you need the restoration. If she can't, I suggest perhaps finding a new dr you can trust, and takes the time to explain, they do exist.
There's different stages of decay, incipient caries where it's less than 50% in the enamel (outer layer). It doesn't require any attention (it can remineralize). But to help remineralize it with things like hydroxyapatite and being aware of acid exposure. If it's more than 50% into the enamel and growing rapidly is when it's usually recommended treatment because if it gets into the second layer which is dentin the decay rapidly takes over, and if it hits the nerve, the infection takes over which requires a root canal. (For the price of root canals and infection rate after most dentist I've worked with recommend implants instead if all else healthy, and no history of smoking or unstable diabetes)
Ultimately ask questions, if it doesn't feel right it probably isn't.

@@milliethemillinator3154 just like xrays being client specific. So are cleaning. If you're a person who has a good diet, takes proper care of your teeth, no history of unstable diabetes ect. Typically I recommend 6-9-12 months. Depends on the person, everyone has different needs. Ive seen some pts they hadn't been in 2 years and immaculate oral hygiene I was beyond impressed. But also, I've seen others every 3 months (heavy deposit, not great oral care, cluster of health issues) and they put me to work.

Thanks for sharing!!! I just had this EXACT experience when I was home in the U. S. I retired and no longer carry dental insurance as I’m on Medicare. My long-term dentist told me I couldn’t have my teeth cleaned unless I had full mouth X-rays every 1-2 years!! So I went to a new dentist and they said they couldn’t clean my teeth unless they took X-rays first. So, I was in Italy and went to an excellent dentist and he laughed when I told him what my dentist said. He said, “Americans always complicate matters. I wouldn’t do an X-ray unless there was a reason to, like pain for instance”. They do not require regular Xrays. BTW, the dentist where I was in Washington State said it was “the law” that X-rays and exam are required initially before they can work on you!!!! I’d sure like to know if that is true!! 7:26 You are exactly right!! I said no thanks, and when I went to Italy recently, I had my teeth cleaned and paid a third of what Id be charged
I would love to know if it’s also REALLY required by law to do x-rays before cleaning. I haven’t seen a dentist in 2+ years now; have been eating a mostly carnivore diet for 1-1/2 years, and my mouth is in excellent shape. Most of my tooth sensitivity to cold has left. I also drink RO filtered water, so I avoid fluoride. I carefully brush and floss every night. I also brush with a tooth powder that’s made of nano particle hydroxyapatite.

X-rays are required to assure there are no pathologies, decay and to check bone level and bone health. The insistence on either doing the X-ray or signing the form of refusal is simply to prevent any future liability IF there was a problem that went undetected. The proliferation of lawsuits in the US is behind all of this in my view. It seems silly to have an X-ray if you feel there is nothing wrong, however periodontal disease is called the silent disease for a reason, and abscess can be silent until it’s not as well. All that said, if you floss your teeth ~correctly~ daily, have routine 6 month (more frequent if you have advanced periodontal disease) cleanings and take 2-4 bitewing X-rays every 1-2 years and a full mouth set every 5-7+ years that’s all you need! I’ve been a Dental Hygienist for over 35 years, I also say NO to fluoride.

I went to a new dentist recently for teeth cleaning as I have new insurance and they were on the list. When I arrived they had to take x-rays before they did anything and the cleaning was to be done in a couple weeks. The assistant said she had to take 36 x-rays, what? Not sure if they did all 36 but they definitely did at least 20 to 25, I was floored, my former dentist never took this much. They did find a small cavity in a molar.
2 weeks later I went in for the teeth cleaning. they wanted to take more X-rays what? I refused and she did clean my teeth and gave me fluoride which I spit out. She stopped me and said please don't spit out the fluoride and I said no, I don't want it in my mouth .
This explains why they wanted to take a lot of X-rays and then again in 2 weeks and as we know nothing changed in my mouth. This is so evil exposing people to more x-rays just for the money. Whatever happened to "do no harm"?
I had a situation where I was admitted into the hospital with a micro-bowel perforation from diverticulitis about 10 years ago. I was given a blood thinner, because it was protocol. I had no idea, so I went along with the first TWO injections (I believe they are/were about 4 hours apart). I asked why I was getting it, and was told it was for people who weren't getting up and moving around, which I was. I told the second nurse giving me the injection "I COULD (walk around often) get up, if that was what I needed to do, so why was I still be getting this injection?" ** SHE SHRUGGED HER SHOULDERS ** As in "I dont know" She could not give me a reason for it?
The next nurse (when the shift changed) who came in, I asked her the same question. She came in, CLOSED THE DOOR TO MY ROOM, and proceeded to tell me that I could refuse ANY medical services I wanted. I HAD NO IDEA! I always thought that "doctors have my BEST interest at heart, why would they do anything they didn't NEED to do?" I didn't take anymore of those injections! AND I could not tell you how much I appreciated that nurses honesty! I will always remember her/that situation!
ALSO, now, I don't just do what my Dr says, I QUESTION EVERYTHING. I am truly my OWN advocate! BUT - my reasoning is because I understand that Drs are over worked & they have TONS of patients (I am not their only one). I should do what's best for me, with the help from my Dr, They only sit with me for a short period of time, I should know what is going on with my body and do my VERY best to do what I can to stay healthy. It is NOT my Drs responsibility, it is mine.

Was going to a new dentist in an area I moved to for years. Nearly EVERY time I'd go for the cleaning... suddenly I would have cavities that needed attention. Had a few over many years before, but never anything like once I started with this new dentist. Each time, 2 to 4 areas that were needing work - allegedly. Once the waiting room was suddenly expanded with brand new huge TV's, new furniture, large area for the 2 or 3 assistants working the phone and greeting people all got out of complete control, it became obvious why there were always problems that needed work when I'd go. I finally just stopped about a year and a half ago, found a new dentist and the ONLY thing that has needed to be done since, ironically, was repair of the work that the other dentist had done to fix some of the fillings that had chipped. I have always refused the flouride "treatments", every time, everywhere. It's a freaking neurotoxin, so, no thanks.

My wife and I left a dentist after a few visits for a similar reason - the number of "cavities" he was finding in people was abnormal. I still believe I was given a crown I didnt need within those few visits until we figured it out and split. Unfortunately the age of the professional or "expert" has past, especially in the medical industry where hearing about profit over people has become pretty common. Trust but Verify
And they add fluoride to drinking water… the Flouride Action Network just won a legal case in September AGAINST flouride in water… it’s been in court for 7 years!!!

You’re blaming the dentist, but I think it’s the lawyers and the litigious society we live in. I’ve been a hygienist for some years now and go through this scenario everyday. I personally feel that bitewing x-rays every year and a full set every five years is appropriate, and I have them done on myself that way. If we as clinicians could see all the problems that arise between the teeth and in the jaw by just looking in the mouth and listening the patients, then there would be no need for x-rays at all. But we can’t and we’ll never know about what we can’t see. However, I also agree that patients should be able to make their own choices. The problem is: can a patient consent to what is considered malpractice? From a legal perspective the answer is no. There is a “standard of care”(set forth by lawyers and dental societys) and if the dentist fails to meet that standard, they are opening themselves up to possible litigation. Not all dentists see x-rays as a cash cow, and are looking to fleece you. The dentist I work for now has often times done them for free if he knows that a patient is in financial distress. Dr. Dhand, you said that you have had a root canal. Perhaps you could have avoided that by catching a small cavity on a x-ray, before it got big enough to reach the pulp. But, you’re a big boy and should be able to make that choice of either: (x-ray and it’s potential side effects) or (no x-ray and potentially failing to detect decay, infections, various diseases related to the bone including cancers that could be life threatening.) Anyway, just my two cents and hope this helps.
In Canada I could go to my dentist and just get a cleaning. Here in Florida they want to do 14 xrays, a panoramic scan and gum test. If you do not pass you need a deep cleaning. This is all an insurance scam. If you just want a cleaning say you have no insurance.

Not just that they destroyed all my teeth by removing all Amalgam fillings at once before they told me that the insurance didn't pay for the alternative materials I needed...they also removed the root tip on the wrong front tooth. My last dentist utterly destroyed my life when I was a teenager. I wanted to end myself I was in so much pain. I remember distinctly when I had my wisdom teeth ripped out (he refused to knock me out, kept me awake during the whole thing which was stressful for a teenager.) they put TWO gauze in my bottom left wound. They only took out one. I brought it up, they said nah they don't see an extra gauze. Ok I guess I imagined it even though I was wide awake. Well cut to a few months later I have a dry socket, and the left side is not healing. I tell them about the gauze, they say "nah it's just tissue that's healing. Cut to another year later and the hole is open, it stinks of rot, and I'm telling them they left a gauze. Ok, dentist finally decides to test to see if I'm right, yes there is a gauze. He pulls it out, and out comes an explosion of blood. Dry socket took forever to heal, and I was miserable and unhappy until I was 18 years old. THEN, two years later they tell me I have two cavities, they can't see anything on the x-ray, but they decide to go in anyway because there is an occlusal stain on my left molar. That cavity never healed right, and the doctor told me he could do a root canal, and also that I had 16 other cavities. At that point I was done, and lived with the sensitivity of my back molar until it finally became manageable. It's been almost 20 years, I have not been to the dentist since. I guess those 16 cavities just disappeared because I feel fine and it's been a good long while.

After the last two years, where I had to see several different dentists (specialists) because I wanted the best and the ones I wanted didn't take my insurance, I ended up having a lot of X-rays. Each dentist insisted on taking a whole new batch. Finally, deep cavities filled, crowns in place, root canals over with, and I am now wearing invisible aligners (braces) to have my teeth straightened, a lifelong dream. But because of your video, I have decided not to visit yet another new dental office to have my teeth cleaned because it will mean more X-rays, the whole full-mouth deal. I am already having regular X-rays every three months at the orthodontist (these are needed), so I will forego going to yet another new dentist for teeth cleaning. Oh yes, been there, done that. In 2020 during pandemic, we made appointments for dental check ups in Wyoming because we refused to wear masks. We are in Colorado. Got there, all was good initially but was told that we needed to set up deep root cleaning ( both of us) and there was no need for a routine dental. We left. Six months ago, more of the same. Went to my regular dentist in Colorado and was told I needed a deep root cleaning. They still planned on doing my regular cleaning but '"ran out of time" and it never happened. I'm almost 74, an RN and in excellent physical condition. I've followed all the principles you espouse over the last 40 plus years.
I've never had a tooth pulled ( aside from wisdom teeth as a teenager), never had a toothache, do all the preventative care that can be done. HAVE fallen for the xray scam for years but no more!
I think the "key" for their insistence for procedures is my husband and I have double dental coverage from our previous employers and they see a gravy train in us. I swear I am never going back.

What is deep root cleaning? Surly there can be no such thing. Can you imagine exposing a root to clean it!!!!!! The mind boggles at the thought.
You can clean above the gumline, and you can also clean the space below the gum line which is called root planing. (You know how pop corn husks get caught under your gum - that space, but it can get much deeper than a popcorn husk, sometimes well over 10 mm below the gum line.) Sometimes it's called deep cleaning. An instrument is inserted under the gum line and the root surface is scraped with it to remove diseased root, hard calculus buildup, plaque… Think of it like debriding a badly infected wound which removes the infection and infected tissue and prevents further disease and damage.
I am a hygienist and I've seen countless new patient with severely diseased gums and bone, sometimes loose teeth as a result. They may not have been going to a practice, or have been going to a practice for many years and their practitioners did not address the disease. Some people were upset because they thought I was the scammer so I would give them a mirror and show them the damage to their guns and I would let them see me pull up the debris from under their gums. Grossed some of them out.
Part of my point is there is scamming everywhere and it can be hard to know if it's happening to you. For the RN above I couldn't say for sure but everything you've said about your health and self-care has only a little bearing on whether you need root planning or not. Maybe your original practitioner should have been doing it all along and wasn't, or somebody is trying to scam, or although not common in your age group - your mouth could be perfectly fine. You could get an assessment by another practitioner and they should be able to tell you the measurements of your gums, and show you bone loss and calculus on the x-rays. If the disease was really bad they could show you your teeth are loose just by wiggling them.
@@bluejayspeanut Get a bit of food under the gum is painful, the only time I go mouthwash & toothbrush crazy. Doing that must be torture. Plus it leaves a gap for a while, room for even more food to get trapped. A vicious circle.
I allowed them to do root canal, costs $1,600.00, I paid in cash. Well that was the beginning to the end of my teeth. Root canal teeth got infected do to they only put in a temporary filling that they did not tell me was temporary those 2 teeth severely infected which went into the jaw bone and now I don’t even look into a mirror anymore because all I see is how ugly I am not that I was beautiful but to see that ugly reflection of myself overwhelms me with such a horrible emotional pain inside. I now see and worse feel ugly.

You hit the nail on the head! I went to the dentist to have my tooth fixed and they wanted to do panoramic x-rays and then another kind of partial panoramic. Nothing to do with what I came for then they wanted to do deep cleaning and they said they wouldn’t do any dental work until I did the deep cleaning series which was about $3000. Needless to say, I never went back to that Dentist what a scam they training their staff to push the needless procedures to rack up more money. I’m done with it.

Yes, it’s ridiculous. First, you know they just have to do the bite-wing x-rays, then this 360 degree panoramic x-ray that isn’t covered by insurance (not covered last time I went). I haven’t been back. My out-of-pocket was $1500.

I have had this exact same experience in my dentist's office! I am not a doctor, and they had such a negative reaction to this that I ended up feeling bad. I said I didn't want the radiation unless it was absolutely necessary ( and I had no problems with my teeth). They finally agreed but said in a scolding voice that I would have to have it next time. Thank you so much for talking about this, because they talked to me as if I was being difficult because I don't want x-rays every time!
This is the issue you need to understand, just because you don't feel pain DOES NOT mean your teeth are fine. How do we know it is necessary if we can't see cavities in between the teeth with out the xrays. All I can say is I hope you are flossing!

No radiation is good, but sometimes necessary. Go online; a quick search on a few reputable sites will give you a really good idea of what the exposure is, and what an average yearly exposure is from the environment. Then form your opinion.

YOU SIR, I won't call you doctor, you don't deserve! I have been in the dental profession for over 40 years and still working. Over the years I can't count the number of patients that "saved" from more advanced treatment and yes lives. Just recently a new pt came in and I took xrays, the pt wasn't too happy, WHO IS?, being a new pt a long term rapport was not established. While treating him I asked him if he knew that a filling was loose? He said no. With a mirror I showed him and the filling actually popped out. Seeing is believing. What about the pt that refused xrays and then agreed. DId not mention anything, I notified the dentist...........WHO IS A DOCTOR. Sadly, that pts life changed. Further treatment and surgery the pt lost their jaw, BUT NOT HER LIFE! I can come up with many many reasons for annual check films, which is not excessive but appropriate. YOU WHEEL YOUR MEDICAL DEGREE WITH POWER AND YOU MAKE PEOPLE THINK YOU KNOW EVERYTHING. YOU DON'T. YOU NEED TO RETRACT THIS ABUSIVE, MISLEADING AND MALPRACTICE RECOMMENDATION. Your medical license deserves to be suspended. You have no idea how much harm you have caused. ARE THERE DENTIST YOU "DO MORE THAN THEY SHOULD"? SURE, MEDICAL DOCTORS TOO. Wow.. you got all that right. I’m 76 and have had to go through this protocol for years and years. I’ve decided no more. I will refuse X-rays unless I have an issue. I go to Dr once a year. Get labs drawn and that’s it. As an ex-nurse I review them myself. The further we stay away from medical “care” the better off we are. Thats my motto and I’m sticking to it!
I hope you at least have mammograms. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer that was found with a mammogram. She didn't have any lumps or other symptoms. The cancer was found early enough that she only needed a lumpectomy. She was lucky.
Mammograms are evil. They CAUSE cancer and what's more a HIGH level of diagnosis of cancer are INCORRECT and this is PROVEN. THEN the treatment they inflict in you makes you sick. Please wake up. @@MsPea

It’s the love of money . My dentist retired and my cleaning charge increased from $65 ( and I refused X-rays ) to almost $400 with the new dentist and her fancy office and xray equipment ( I had X-rays done ) . What a scam . I’m finding a new old school dentist .

20+ years. Never had that 360° X ray there, was Never offered a deep cleaning with root scaling either.
Here in Tallahassee the hygienist was not interested in doing a regular cleaning after I refused a 2 session deep cleaning to be paid out of pocket

I have been refusing dental x-rays for the past 5 years. My dentist retired and a new dentist took his place. I was told by this new dentist if I don't get x-rays he will no longer be my dentist! They have always had me sign a waiver saying that I refused x-rays. He said that he can't give me the care I deserve if I don't have x-rays. I told him that I have no problems but they still wanted me to do the x-rays. I have to pay out of pocket for any dental and it seemed like an unnecessary expense. I just figured this was a way for them to drum up some money and find something wrong so they could fix it.
Go carnivore and you can forget about the dentist. You barely have to brush your teeth if you are full carnivore. Search it up, there are testimonies of people’s experiences.

He indulges my self care practices, sometime with a grimace, sometimes with an attentive nod! Yes, I knew from your introduction to the X-ray requirement that they "needed" an X-ray in order to bill the insurance for as much as they could get away with. I have stopped going to my Dr. because the ladt time I made an appointment they told me to go online to their website, download & complete a 2-page questionnaire which would be required in order to see the Dr. I know what happens to "private" health data these days & it's anything but private. So I declined the appointment. What a let down. I'm in my early 70s. I love your caring & honest program. God bless you.
Im a british dentist and a subscriber. In the usa, i find overtreatment takes place , in the uk, i find patients are often undertreated. To some extent economics is involved. However, for a new patient , xrays are indicated to assess a baseline for the oral tissues. Detection of cavities, gum disease, bone levels etc. If sunil had his teeth cleaned but gum disease went undiagnosed, the dentist would be open to litigation . To some extent its watching your own back. Risk assesment for decay has to be assesed. The higher the risk ie previous level of fillings, the more the risk etc so x rays would be indicated. To decline a cleaning unless x rays are taken would mean that true informed consent was not being sought. A good practioner should justify an x ray exposure . In the uk we have guide lines from the royal colledge of surgeons which explain x ray criteria. In any case, overuling the patient is assault in my book. In the past xrays were performed far too often. The new approach is more patuent centred , in the uk anyway
As a single mother of three ( father passed away , when i had a 3 n half , a 2 year old , and 3 months pregnant ) . I could not afford a dental private practice . Which its why i nearly always had to use the government dental hospitals. This has been one of my most regretted things i have done in my life . Because now i have hardly any teeth left , due to The criminal treatments i got in these types of places ( Australia) . Three times , i had a dentist pull teeth out , when there was no need , and he/they ( twice ) put his foot on the chair , to use more force to pull it out , which i practically fainted. my tooth/teeth were in no need for an extraction . This left me with so much fear of dentist , which in turn put me in a worst disadvantage situation . 😪

This happened to me last week. I was called in for a cleaning, and had no issues with my teeth. Before I could sit in the treatment chair, the hygienist announced that she would take a series of X-rays before getting started on the cleaning. After talking my ear off, the dentist told me it would be illegal to clean my teeth if they didn't X-ray me first. That clever assertion added insult to injury. At that point, I walked out, because he could not permit me to decline without admitting that he had just lied. I think they have convinced themselves that there is zero risk to radiation, regardless of the patient's combined exposure. To this young dentist, the X-ray is just another carefree source of revenue. The patient's preference and freedom to choose are of no interest.

Thank you, Dr Dhand. I'm a RN in rural Minnesota, US. I was to the dentist for a cleaning, as well, recently. The hygienist reminded me I had not gotten x-rays for the past 2 years. I told them I don't want x-rays, as I have had no issues with my teeth (plus I have to pay out of pocket for this). I had to sign a paper stating I declined the x-rays. At the end, the hygienist told me my teeth looked excellent. What a bunch of extra expense. If I was having a problem, I would of course, want x-rays. But my teeth, are thankfully, very good. This is a racket to make more money. I got out of that appointment for $135, thankfully.
Your teeth may look excellent from the outside, but unless your hygienist has x-ray vision you don't know what is on the inside. Maybe it's fine? Maybe not? What a patient "feels" in their mouth is a very poor indicator of what is going on. What we see clinically tells part of the story, but not all of it. I can't tell you how many times I've seen patients with very large cavities and infections that are completely asymptomatic and not visible clinically. That being said, I think you should be able to make that choice to have x-rays or not, just understand that your dentist might not be able to diagnose present decay, infections, diseases that have the potential to be more costly(both financally and health wise) than if they were caught early.
Thank you for posting this! I live in Canada and have refused dental X-rays as well but have never been asked to sign a refusal form. Unfortunately, it’s only since cvd that I really starting questioning health care protocols- so I have many years of being brainwashed to recover from!
I’m a dentist in Sweden. I generally agree that exposure to radiation, including dental x-rays, should always be clinically and diagnostically motivated. Sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised if some clinicians insist on X-rays for financial and billing reasons rather than solely for the health benefit of the patient. However there can be and often is diagnostic value and information in X-rays also from en dental cleaning situation. A couple of examples:
1. Fillings with incorrect shape or rough surface attracting dental plaque.
2. Widened and/or deepened periodontal pockets/periodontium caused by dental plaque.
However, these conditions though would unlikely be present without also deepened periodontal pockets that can be detected by probing the gums clinically BEFORE opting for the X-rays.
Therefore in conclusion I agree with Dr Dhand that the dental X-rays shouldn’t be done as a routine without a prior clinical reason.
Finally an actual dentist on here who knows what the value of X-rays are and while they shouldn’t be done excessively and unnecessarily, they are critical to quality care. I would prefer anyone working in my mouth with sharp instruments and drills in a very small space to have as accurate of a view as possible. Also without a panoramic X-ray I would have never know that my seemingly non existent upper wisdom teeth were actually in my sinus cavity which was why I was having chronic sinus infections. How would I have ever known without an X-ray?

@@65silvanina Same for me (also in Sweden). The x-rays today use digital technology and have much less radiation than before. I think that is why they consider it safe.
I feel the same way about mammograms and other "pre-screening" tests. The statistics don't support the idea that pre-screening actually saves lives.
Personally, I'd rather know in advance if there's a problem and would be pre-screened any day

Prescreening will always be the way to catch potentially serious problems early, and I'm all for it, but I need the option to choose if I need it
Dentistry though, is Hands-On, so they NEED to KNOW for your safety if you have a serious problem that needs addressed before the cleaning so they don't end up hitting a painful spot you may not even know you have
Remember, a no dentist wants to hurt their patients by hitting a spot that patient may not know they have

To reduce exposure to cancer causing radiation. This radiation is being transmitted into sqashed breast tissue.
Look into the increased rates of breastcancer. Do some research and make an informed choice.
I will never have another mammogram. I've seen very interesting research and made that decision.
Same thing happened to me in the US. I left the office because they wouldn't proceed with the cleaning without the x ray. Most Americans completely capitulate to anyone with a title and they were baffled by my refusal

A cleaning appointment also includes an examination of the health status of your mouth. That can’t be done without seeing between and inside of teeth.

The dentist said if I refused I would have to find another dentist. So I did. It never made sense to me to get X-rays that I didn’t need. Im going to send this to my new dentist.

Uk here - I’ve had this argument with my dentist for years. I’ve explained that other health conditions mean I have to have X rays and CTs so don’t want more X rays unnecessarily. They say it’s to see if a problem is looming. It’s now on my notes no X-rays unless I have a dental issue but it’s an awkward conversation each time. So too was my refusal of prescription toothpaste with higher fluoride. I was laughed at by the assistant for saying I had concerns and didn’t want it. I stand my ground

Have had exactly the same with my dentist and I gave exactly the same reasons for refusing. I had a private dentist who insisted on doing by annual x rays, and refused a radiation apron when I asked for one. I was intimidated into going along with this until he retired. At the new dentist, I said they could take one set of initial x rays and that was it. Somehow I have been persuaded into a second set - there won't be any more.
yeah it is awkward indeed, and we shouldn't have to live like this, we have the right to refuse treatment without having it turned into a debate with every single provider. This is why I hate going to doctors, and my politeness is very short to deal with all the BS and the sour looks they give you.
Gotta love the 5000 ppm prescription fluoride they're handing out like candy now when 50 ppm is hazardous to human health.

Oh my gosh!! I am so glad to hear a physician agree with what I've said for years!!! I have refused Xrays for years and actually had to find a different dentist who would accommodate my decisions as a consumer of their service. As an aside, I got xrays taken when i was in my 20s and was told I had 7 "cavities". I didn't allow them to do anything to me that day and I never went back to that dentist. I'm now 63 and to this day, I have all my teeth and NO fillings. Dentistry is a total scam in my opinion.
