Enjoyed your review as always. The map behind you is very nice! I got my Eco this week. I picked it up in a 1.1 stub (white) and am enjoying it very much. I have had great luck with TWSBI as my USA and Mini are still going strong with no problems or cracking. I picked this one up so I could have another large stub nib to use fun inks with it. Love the price and feel ok taking it to work and other places and not worrying about it. Also, the clear demonstrator look is a favorite so I can enjoy looking at my inks.
Really great video as always ! Thank you very much !! I like the new filming environment and quality of the video ! Your videos had improved a lot since the begining ! :D Bought mine few days after release in 1.1 mm and could'nt be happier !
+Nicolas Cloutier Thank you!
Love this pen! Thank you for a great review
Great review! I love the frames that you are wearing! I have been in the market for a new pair of glasses, wouldn't mind a pair like that.
You are great and really enjoy your videos. If I want a short review that is well done and gives short pros and cons,I like to always go to your videos. Thank you!
Susan Holton Thank you!
You can never please everyone, but you will always find people who will like whatever you do. Just do whatever you want!
Also, the problem with the ECO is indeed overfilling it. They made a super good flowing feed but now you have to really wipe the excess ink on the nib after filling it, otherwise it will start dripping like crazy, it does make some kind of vacuum. I had that problem with mine and I remember seeing air bubbles forming inside the section, each accompanied by a massive drop of ink...
+andresruval Interesting, thanks for that explanation!
Great review, man! I got my Eco about 2 weeks back and I noticed that mine was much much drier and much finer than the one in your review so I just increased the flow by looking at some videos from The Pen Habit. So just saying to others that its pretty easy to make it wetter for an EF and that the fineness of the line might be different. Not sure if mine was just a defective one or just an accident but still a very nice pen
Thanks for the reply, point taken. I would like to say their after sales service is top. I cracked the barrel on my Eco, i spoke to Philip Wang and he posted me a replacement. Thankyou to him.
Hi - just wanted to thank you for the reverse writing sample, which provides very useful information for viewers who sketch or draw with fountain pens. Even with an EF nib, the ability to flip the pen and make finer lines can be a real bonus. Just a general thanks as well for all your reviews - they're a gift! ( my vote is for varying the inks - it packs even more useful info to the reviews - and the colours are nice).
You're very welcome!
Just bought one as my first fountain pen. Eager to try it out.
As always a very nice review!!!
Thanks for this one! I've been putting an ECO into a shopping cart and taking it back out for weeks. I have a VAC 700 (too big for my little hand) and have been drawn to the inexpensive ECO because of its section. It isn't metal. The thing that puts me off is the cracking issue. Perhaps I'll wait until your Seriousnibbage ECO episode with Azizah and enter your draw! I like the addition of the wall map, BTW. - roc
I love my TWSBI ECO's (I have one with a Fine and one with a Medium nib). I am a big fan of the 580's and my Vac 700 is one of my favorite daily writers. I had no expectations positive or negative when the ECO's were released, just that people had been waiting for these to finally come out. I was just hoping they would be enjoyable writers. After the first couple days writing with them I was completely hooked. Besides the Vac 700 the ECO is my favorite TWSBI so far.
Another great review Stephen. Have a great day,
Thanks, Stephen. I bought one and received another as a gift. Great everyday writers and fine for leaving at the office. Cap design is rather chunky for my taste, but I expect this pen was designed with younger folks in mind. I wish the barrel was hexagonal to match and prevent desk roll. I look forward to the SN episode.
This is probably one of the best "entry" or "budget" pens at the moment. It is very well designed, feels well made, comes with tools, a case, piston filler, good nib, demonstrator etc. Personally I think it beats a Lamy Safari in terms of value. Go TWSBI! :D
I bought it a few months ago. its my daily use pen. its awesome! So far no cracking and i also have a twsbi diamond 580 and that's also a solid pen.
Man... thats fountain pen passion for you - I am hooked and impressed.
+meditating010 Thank you!
My TWSBI Eco cracked at the section after 5 days . It got replaced, so far so good
Great review Sir. You address all the details. Even explaining the company customer service policy.
Thanks....
looks like If TWSBI continue to produce more colours and various editions of the ECO. They could enter the Lamy Safari market maybe.
What do you think?
Are people still having issues with their Twsbi Eco's developing cracks?
No alcohol could also warn against drunk letter writing. Hahaha.
I really love my ECO, my favorite pen so far!
Hey Steven, could you review one of the namiki maki-e pens?
Nice, respectful review. I share concerns over the cracking issue. For my money, I like it when you use different inks in your pen reviews..it's like a little bonus. Whichever inks you choose to use, Dr. Brown, I'm good. ;-)
+John J Thank you!
Ive had both my vac 700 cap and 540 cap crack. It was above the metal ring where the resin is by far the thinnest. Anyways both were replaced by twsbi in no time for free. I would never worry about buying anything from them. Hope that helps u with your concerns:)
It does, somewhat.. but here's my position on fountain pens. I want to use them. I don't get into the granularities of tinkering and collecting as many do; I fully understand why people like that. For a pen to crack on me, even if a white -gloved technician hand-delivered a replacement to me, it's still down time and I have to think about the pen. All I want is to ink up, and begin writing or drawing, and forget about the pen. I think that TWSBI makes attractive pens with compelling features and should they truly solve the cracking problem, I'll likely get one myself. ;-) ps:I have no clue where the strikethrough came from.
+John J i just wrapped the cap with tape and continued using them. also the new caps didnt break for me (yet) so they probably fixed that issue:)
yes I'm familiar with that technique; same as many of us do for our Preppies. Very nice!
Could what TWSBI was refering to be that the o-ring for the cap creates a slight pressure area in the cap, and if put in your pocket, or a hot day, both the air in the cap and the air trapped in the pen create a motive force to expel the ink (obviously not a jet of ink, but enough to be classified as leakage)? Have you experienced what they talked about, or tried to induce what they are talking about to see what they are refering to?
Thank you!!
Actually I prefer to see different inks beeing used. Recently I bought a bottle of Diamine Apple Glory because I liked it so much in the writing sample. Always nice to discover something new. P.S : The Diamine Sepia is also really nice. Very good shading.
Between this and Fabercastell loom , which one will you recommend (based on nib smoothness and little bit wet too ) ?
Thankx and great review ,have a great day ahead :))
Soumyajit Sarkar The Loom
Ahah i was looking for your review of this FP yesterday and ... :D, Thank you :)
+sbrebrown Do I always have to keep twisting the end cap to get the ink flowing? Because when I keep writing for a long time, the ink stops flowing automatically to to the nib. Did I do something wrong when I assembled it? Please help.
You shouldn't have to unscrew the end cap. It's probably just another faulty TWSBI that needs to be sent back for replacement.
Thanks sbrebrown for helping out.
IS the nib in the ECO interchangeable with the 5340 or 580? BTW I have a 540 with EF nib that is just amazing - never cracked going on two years and incredibly reliable - I love the pen. Also have the terminated MICARTA II with EF it also has been a workhorse pen - I would have bought more if I knew they were going to terminate production. So I'm a fan of TWSBI.
I thought the nib did fit but not as a unit, so you have to pull it.
I recently got into fountain pens and have a Pilot Plumix and a recently purchased Pilot Metropolitan.. I really thought I would like the Metropolitan but I just can't seem to write comfortably with it. The grip portion seems rather thin for the weight of the pen and I find myself having to keep a strong grip on the pen to keep it where I want it in my hand. I don't write with the pen resting all the way in my hands web, I write with more of a calligraphy grip i guess where the pen is up near my knuckle at the top of my hands web. I am wondering if maybe a TWSBI ECO would suit me better. I would love to buy one but as I just went back to school at 29 and I'm not working I am lucky I can afford to eat let alone buy another pen.. I gotta come up with a way to make some money (legally lol) while in school without hurting my grades by working a traditional job.
Considering how much plastic is in it I wonder how durable long-term it is.
Stephen, thank you for this excellent review. I am seriously considering purchasing an Eco, so this was quite useful for me. If I may ask, do you possibly remember what tablet or notebook you were using for your writing sample in this video? I realize it’s been quite a long time since you made the video, so I understand completely if you don’t remember! 🤔☺️ Again, many thanks for your excellent reviews, which are also quite entertaining!
I think it was a Rhodia notebook
sbrebrown Thank you very kindly!
What an adorable pen, I think I'm gonna buy it. Only I'm a little afraid it will be scratchy.
Stephen,
I know you can't use the interchangeable nib units from the 580 or the mini or the 700, though the mi I nibs and feeds fit. my question is does the barrel separate from the nib section? or is it all one piece and only the piston comes out the other end?
thanks.
It's one-piece
+sbrebrown thank you sir!!
Hi Stephen
I have the 580 AL, but it's a little big and heavy for long writing. Is the Eco smaller and slimmer?
dank je wel
:-)
Yes, it's a little slimmer
+sbrebrown thank you. Maybe I'll buy it. I like the white version and twsbi in general. My 580 never leaks or anything.
Liked simply for the review of the instructions haha
I know that alcohol can crack certain kinds of acrylic. Maybe that is what they are warning against.
Funny but accurate comment about your attempt to use a consistent ink. People are weird.
I'm a fan of a Swedish band called The Flower Kings. Some of their fans complain that their music all sounds the same, that their CD's are virtually interchangeable. On some of their CD's they included odd bits and recordings of improvisations (improvisation is something they do in their live shows). Then fans complained that the band was including too much filler/ material that was not representative of their vision of the band.
Brian Goulet uses the same ink and paper for the writing samples posted on his website. I wonder if he gets complaints about this: 'You're favoring Rhodia over other paper brands!'
You can't please everyone all of the time.
Thanks for your work! Your videos are consistently* informative and entertaining.
*Maybe you ought to make some clunkers every now and then, just to change things up.
Jan Kafka Thank you!
Hi Stephen,
Hope you are fine.Greetings from Kerala, India.
Could you tell me which nib I should go for TWSBI Eco?..I usually use medium JOWO or Faber Castell nibs.
Thank you.
Wish you & your family a safe and healthy journey ahead through these unusual times..
Thank you, to you as well. Then I'd go for a medium TWSBI nib as well
For $30 you get a piston fill pen that holds a great amount of ink, lasting almost forever, that writes better than any $30-$70 pens I have used. Also you have the O rings which are functional and quite an engineering trick. Good luck in finding a better pen for $30.
ok completely unrelated but where do i find the mill cuckfield videos
+sbrebrown thanks Stephen . Please make more professor and mill videos
What is that intro ?
I like the pen so far, but there's just one weird problem - every week or so I must press the nib into the pen, because it gets a bit loose and comes out a tad. Other than that, it's a very good pen for the price.
So I’m not alone. My Eco’s nib also tends to “creep” out and must be reset. Good to know it’s not a defect!
Hey man! Can you please recommend a real nice black ink that would suit the ECO?
+Marios Pantouvanos Aurora Black.
That was a quick response! thank you!
Hai Stephen!
I have a Question about the Twsbi Stub 1.1 Nib. I buy a Twsbi-Eco with 1.1 Stub, in first case to get that tool helps me to disassemble my Pelikan M805 which I really love to write with.
I take the Stub on the Twsbi to get a pen with a little calligraphic style in writing. But my Stub 1.1 writes very thin, significant thinner as my M805 with M-Nib.
I use Pelikan-Ink in the moment, it's a little on the dry side of the inks I own, but I've thougt a Stub 1.1 Nib must be broader then my M- or B- Nibs on the Pelikan.
Can you tell me if my experince with the Twsbi Stub 1.1 is in the normal range and it's that thin, or is there's something wrong with that nib.
Nice Greetings from Bremen, Germany
Andreas
It's 1.1 mm wide, but Pelikan nibs run on the broad side. So in principle, it's possible that the Pelikan M is as broad as this TWSBI 1.1 mm.
+sbrebrown It's not as broad as the M-Nib of my Pelikan it's more than between EF and F compared to Pelikan. If it where like my M-Nib, I'll be lucky, cause my M writes more on the wet side (not really far away from my B, which is a bit more on the dry side).
The Stub 1.1 writes very fine?
It should write a line that is exactly 1.1 mm wide. If it doesn't, it's broken.
+sbrebrown Thanks a lot, I'll try it.
Greetings
Andreas
Can i buy desperately a medium nib for my eco?The Fine point nib it is a bit scratchy. Insufficient instructions for assembly the piston filling mechanism, i had to find a video in the You tube to put back the piston assy.Chinese job..half done.
+George Argyris Yes, you can.
+sbrebrown ..were from..?Thank you for the answer.
+George Argyris Anderson pens?
+sbrebrown I will do research.I write back to inform our pen fan friends.Have a nice day!
+sbrebrown ...We dont have spare nibs for the Eco yet, however it uses a size 4 nib. So you can find any size 4 nib and swap it on. It also uses the same nib as the Mini. So you could swap a mini nib over but getting some size 4 nibs is probably easier and a little less expensive.

Thats the answer from TWSBI and Mr.Philip Wang.
The five boxing wizards jump quickly.
YOU ALWAYS USE AKKERMAN ROYAL BLUE!!
JK JK
But I always did enjoy admiring all the different inks in your collection.
About the ink, is your decision but I do prefer to see in your nice pens different colors that blue is quite boring 😉.
+1
If you had to choose, would you keep this one or the 540 / 580?
As for the inks, just use the ones you like better! :)
+Luca Simoncini Hey there !!! I've finally found a fellow Italian who is also a fan of Stephen :-)
+Luca Simoncini I own this and the 580, and I actually prefer my eco. The grip is really nice, and you can angel nib in any position along the triangle.
Gunsmith Fiamma Non credo che siamo gli unici due ;)
Spero proprio di no, visto che Stephen è un mito :-)
+Gunsmith Fiamma Grazie mille :-).
I guess with this one you wont be up set if you loose it but you'll kick your self a bit mmmmm nice pen despite the materals used
would be worried about accidentally turning the knob
Stephen your remarks on the amount of silicone that comes with Twsbi pens is getting a little tiring. At least they do provide it and the spanner.
+Clive andrew Gibson I have to assume that viewers haven't seen all of my previous videos.
Writing sample 9:33
I find it funny that on your other videos i can easily go watch another video of yours, but on this video every suggestion is another TWISBI video, same happens with your lamy videos
UA-cam is funny
If i have to sit down and think rationally about TWSBI's policy here; it sounds like ECO is just a little brother of 580, with less fancy clothing. Now the question is do we really care about the fancy clothing i.e., the material it is made of rather than the nib it has? If ECO "writes" just as well as 580, i'd rather buy eco and save a few bucks for something else. When i say it writes just as well, i mean it has the same nib However, a lot of people would really care about the material. TWSBI being a respectable company would definitely want to keep up their reputation and use good materials but would also want to make some profit on a less expensive pen. Here is my open question: What is the difference in material between ECO and 580 that makes ECO so affordable? Are we compromising on the life of the materials id we are choosing ECO; or the looks; or some other aspect? In any case, great review, Stephen, just like always!
+Shikhar Kumar One of the things you lose is the ability to disassemble the entire pen; I think that was key to cutting costs, as the section and body are now one piece, friction fit. I think it also lost some of the cost on trim, polish, etc. I think it's just a less flashy TWSBI, equipped with their smaller nib size.
+makey95 I agree! I bet they must have done something like that to cut costs. In any case, i think it is still a great entry level pen, probably giving Lamy and Pilot a good run for their money since this is a piton filler, while others are not. I think this has started a new class in itself. Let's see how others react!
I think the fewer parts was probably the biggest part of cutting costs; I still think the Pilot Metropolitan and Lamy will reign supreme (convenience of cartridges for students, along with lower prices depending on one's region), but a piston filler for this price is pretty great! I think a company called "Dollar" also does cheap demonstrator pens that I've heard decent things about.
+makey95 In India you can find piston fillers for literally two to three dollars. Dollar is a Pakistani cousin.
About the Logo of TWSBI on the cap, it's composed of three chinese words "文" at different angles (0, 135, and 270 degrees), and the word 文 means "writing something" or "language and culture" as they said in official website. Although the TWSBI has became one of rising brand in fountain pen companies in recent years, none of their products I have ever bought. The reason is pretty simple that I know the problem of quality control in Taiwan products... since I am lived here for 30 years.
@sbrebrown this was a pre-stoic video as the ink comments annoyed you :)
Pilot metropolitan or this?
Ritin Pachnanda Metal or Plastic?
