    Hey guys! I've suffered from herniated disc as well. Lower lumbar spine. It eventually graduated to Sciatica. Nerve pinched on left leg. Endured pain for 6 months. Doctor only option was surgery. I was flat broke and no insurance. Put off MRI for awhile (it's the most important thing you MUST do FIRST). It was expensive but eventually got it. Confirmed the bulge. Cause was a deterioration on S1 probably from an accident I had 10 yrs ago.. I researched on hydrotherapy. Swimming with a series of movement. Gravity is our worse enemy. After just a couple of times, the pain was gone. Got full function of my left leg again. It worked for me. Don't lose hope. I was in a desperate situation. I thought my life ended. It's been 3 years now and I haven't felt pain again. I hope you all get better. I am not a doctor. We all have different cases. This just worked for me.

I was lucky as I didn't have to go through this long process like you. Thank you Kim. Sorry to hear about your injury. I hope things are better now and that your surgery was a successful one. As for treating an injury as soon as possible and pushing your health care providers as much as possible, I couldn't agree more with that advice. I've seen to many cases were injuries have been carried out for too long and then all the sudden more problems develop, because that initial injury wasn't treated appropriately. I think that's some good advice that all people can benefit from in the future. Thanks for sharing that Kim and all the best as well :)

    Hey Remy, just want to say thank you for putting out valuable information. At the very least, your experiences can help people feel not alone in their fight, and it is absolutely a fight. I injured my back squatting 5 years ago. Lower left side totally gave out, felt like someone turned the light switch off between the connection of my upper torso to lower body. I had no force. I was able to get rid of that pain in my back over a course of 5-6 months. Changed my exercise routine from Olympic/powerlifting to more functional/postural movements. Got in the best shape of my life. Unfortunately life got in the way and my schedule changed and I got a away from what was working for me. I would throw my back out once or twice a year and I finally destroyed my lower back doing body Weight good mornings. Finally developed sciatica which was the worst pain of my life. Dealt with that brutal, life taking pain for 4-5 months. Decided to stop all bending during that time. Ate all natural diet. All anti inflammatory foods. Lots of turmeric. Lots of mixed veggie salads and beans. Eventually took care of the nerve pain. By the way, I never missed a day of work and my job requires me to stand all day. People saw me cry. I didn’t care. Eventually the nerve pain graduated to both leg. Like I said, no bending, but either way, I couldn’t bend. Felt like something was stuck. Felt like if I even attempted to bend, something would snap.so maybe 5-6 months go by, my biggest issue was I still can’t bend, horrible back pain still. Decided this wasn’t any way to live being immobile. Went through with surgery to mayb release that nerve. Did a micro discectomy on l5 s1. Your nerve is supposed to be white, mine was purple, that’s how compressed it was. Several weeks have gone by, and guess what? Back pain came back and can’t bend at all. I have not been the same person in 9 months. I feel like my life has been taken away from me. In my opinion, everyone is different. Listen to your own body. I am now attempting to fix this on my own. Step 1- bring down inflammation. Step2- increase mobility with simple yoga style exercises, but nothing that irritates it. I really don’t know what my back is telling me other than “I’m not allowing you to bend right now.” Imagine not being able to bend? It’s not living, especially if you consider yourself some type of athlete. And I was. Lost 20 pounds of muscle. Worked out everyday, and now I’m stuck in the bed with my Loved ones caring for me. Everyone going through their battle, keep faith. Don’t just get sucked in. Listen to people that actually have the experience like a Remy. Movement really is the remedy, but nothing to irritate it. Slowly test it but don’t force it. I never envisioned this battle was in store for me but I have the strength to figure it out. So do you, believe me.

    Thanks for putting up this video. I also had a back issue with my L4, L5 disks. I had the pain traveling down my leg and when I was at my worst I could not even sit in a car for more than 10 minutes before the pain got so bad. My mistake was depending too much on the pain medications (Norco) instead of working on the stretching and strengthening exercising. Once I weened myself off the pain medications and just stuck to Motrin and Ice when I needed it, I was able to really focus on improving my core. Anyway, thanks again for your video. I wish I would have seen it before I had my back my injury!

    I am much older than you & live in the UK but our experiences are similar in many ways. You really have to be persistent if you want anything done.Just getting an MRI scan or seeing a specialist can take ages by which time the worst of the pain may be over, the scan seems normal & you are no longer taken seriously. It is really like being in a battle.

    Great video, thanks for sharing your story. I have to say though - I was just like you. I "tweaked" my back doing dead lifts in 2009, eventually recovered. Then I ended up giving myself a disc bulge at L5-S1 from doing strenuous walking on a steep incline in 2012. The disc bulge eventually resolved itself. Fast forward to 2013, I lift and carry a heavy box of books and trigger an acute episode of lower back pain and sciatica. I get an MRI to discover that I now have degenerative disc disease. Because I kept engaging in activities that added to the wear and tear on my L5-S1, it eventually "sprung a leak." As I'm sure you know through your research, the discs don't have a great capacity to heal themselves since they lack blood flow. For that reason, all the strain and damage adds up and can result in herniation and/or DDD. So my advice to you is to stop doing stuff like dead lifts altogether. Appreciate that you have had a good recovery and avoid those exercises which put strain on your lumbar region. Trust me, you don't want DDD, it's ruined my sex life and my ability to do a lot of things. Just my personal experience, best of luck to you

      @RemiSovran  9 років тому +3

      Willhelm S
      Thanks man, I appreciate your comment! I'm sorry to hear that you had to go through all of that, especially since you experienced additional injuries such as degenerative disc disease. It's true that the discs really do have a limited healing capacity because of the lack of blood supply and this makes it such a "tough" injury to overcome. I know many people end up getting worse and eventually they will get surgery to repair the disc, which is never fun. However, if their were any positives that I could take away from my disc bulge injury is that I'm more educated than ever about my lower back and I understand what's going to cause pain or problems. Activities such as running, I haven't even performed in over 2 year because of the impact it places on your spine. Lastly, at the end of the day though, I think with any disc injury, it's all about being aware and making the changes to your lifestyle that are necessary. Thanks again for sharing that and hopefully things improve for you :)

    Thank you for sharing your story. I can't begin to tell you how similar my condition is to yours. I feel so badly that you've had to wait so long just to get it diagnosed. I share your reaction about your excruciating pain. It was so awful that you are helpless to know how to get your body into a neutral position to just move the pain rating downard from 10 out of 10 to perhaps 5 out of 10. I tried the physical therapy route and on good days, I can walk back to my car. On bad days, the sciatica was so bad I couldn't even walk to the car. My MRI revealed spinal stenosis where my L5 nerve root was crowded out. I've since received a cortisone shot, and I'm patiently recovering. God bless you. I was also an avid hockey player and I can only pray one day I can get back on skates one of these days.

Im still confused about the treatment, but its very nice to hear others experience and learning from them.

      No problem Bushra and sorry to hear about that. That's a very tough situation, especially dealing with two protrusions at different levels and not being able to work. When it comes to the treatment, it's going to be different for everyone, and in your case, since you have two protrusions, it makes things a little more difficult. However, as long as you follow a proper rehab program (e.g., avoiding painful movements/activities, strengthening the core, following a healthy diet, etc.) you should get better over time. On the positive, congratulations on graduating from nursing school and hopefully you get back to your internship soon :)

    Thank you very much for this video! I had an injury while squatting at the gym. Now I have a L5S1 herniated disc which is pinching my ciatic nerve root. I also have 2 other herniated discs above my L5 and other 2 bulging discs. I don't feel a lot of pain though. Sitting is very painful because of my left leg...and sometimes my back gets really stiff and hurts really bad. I am not taking any pain killers because I can handle the pain. No problem Keona! I have actually made a recovery and I consider myself for the most pain free. I have a bit of issues with the arthritis of my facet joints, but that's only if I get a few bad night's sleep in a row, eating poorly for a few days or find myself in a position we're I'm overdoing some activity like sitting. And when I mean recovery, I don't feel my disc protrusion has been healed, it's just healed to the point of we're i'm pain free. Keep in mind if I was still in pain, I wouldn't be deadlifting close to 400lbs:

    I have a 1cm broad based right side bulge. The hell I have been in for 6 months is insane. I have done everything, meds, physio, ice, heat, chiropractor, massage, dry needling, cupping I even bought an inversion table. When it was at its worst I couldn’t sit for even 5 seconds I would sleep on my floor for 2 hours a night. All I could do way lay on the floor all day. I got extremely depressed and almost got hooked on OxyContin because of the pain. All I had to look forward to was my next pill. I couldn’t go out be with my wife or play with my daughter, I had no life. I’m probably %80 better now i take 6km walks everyday now. I still can’t sit sit pain free and have to use a roll I’m my car or it’s torture. Unfortunately I’m a field tech and I drive 80,000km per year. I go back to work in 3 weeks I have no choice I’m out of money. I feel like I’ll never get that last 20% back I want to get back to my active life again lifting weights and running. I’m so scared I’ll blow it out again. The pain was so bad the first 4 weeks I really thought about ending my life. The extreme pain I was in day in and day out and the 5 pills I was on really depressed me and screwed with my mind. I would just start to cry and ask way nobody could help me. The medical system was useless the only thing that helped was time. I hope I get the last 20 back I’m 44 and refuse to live like this the rest of my life.

      Glad to hear your feeling 80% better. That;s very encouraging to hear. As for that final 20%, you still have 3 weeks left and I'd recommend you do your best to take advantage of those 3 weeks. Maybe you won't get to 100%, but if you can get to 85% or 90%, then that would be huge and perhaps manageable for the future :)

    I can identify with you 100% it's almost identical to my experience, I've been dealing with the same issue for about 15 months and physiotherapy also aqua therapy helps a lot with mobility and tension. I only take pain killers when the pain is irritatingly overbearing but mostly I rest a lot in caution not to do more damage to the nerve. However, now that I have been inactive, mostly on bed rest, when I do the exercises my physiotherapist recommend the pain level is high. Thankfully for this video I am encouraged to put in the work and not be afraid of the pain of recovery! All the best in your journey and I hope that you have a fully recovery soon.

    I am 63 years old and a runner, at least up until the end of 2018 when I got my dose of lower back pain and piriformis nightmare. Never had back issues but I believe I brought it on by overdoing my workouts. Like you Remi, Had no ideas until I got my MRI. L4L5 bulging disc. I was and still am having lower back pins and needles, butt discomfort, cannot sit for long, abdominal pain on the right side off and on. I also have had groin and man unit pain and burning. Had no idea about that until I found out that it is all due to the nerve in the back affecting everything in the region. It has been 6 months and still no end in sight but I continue to stretch for back issues. I would not recommend pelvis stretches because I think it prolonged my pain. It helped the pelvis but not my back. My thoughts also are to not start doing anything like running when you feel better right away. I did that for a week and felt like I regressed in my progress. I hear it gets better over time but sure is a long road to recovery!

I've been going to doctors for over 5 months now after since they get my MRI results.. Did MRI, PT, medications, home exercises!! I did everything but it's not easy!! Did MRI for my neck also and I was diagnosed with Cervical Spondylisis which is connected to my spinal as well.. It's crazy!! I'm still trying my best and keep bugging my doctors to help me ease this pains all over my body..😭 Thanks for sharing this video.. I finally found someone who explained so much about this pain situation and I would definitely show this to my husband.. I sometimes feel that he doesn't believe when I am in so much pain every single day that's why I just cry quietly sometimes instead of complaining about my pain. It hurts physically and emotionally!! Thank you for this video! I've been having low back issues off and on since my teens and just about 2 months ago had an injury at the gym while lifting. Went through bulged every 2-5 yrs to now almost daily soreness. Yes, doing the things you recommend in the vid and also found that anti-inflammatory diet and dry sauna have been helping take the pain away and help rebuild and heal the disc. I'm a female with an office sitting job, so also had the company to get me a chair with lumbar support. Daily exercises for strengthening muscles around the nerves has also been effective. I know it's going to be months before feeling ' normal' again, but taking my health in my own hands, researching, and doing all the right things will help speed up recovery.

      +Remi Sovran Wow it really took you a while to figure out youre bulge problem, i also suffer from the same L5-S1, i fell playing basketball about 8 years ago and had minor disc bulge, time went by and i never got treated and about a month and half ago i woke up and i barley could move, i couldn't place my left leg forward, the bulge had grown so much it was pinching the nerve, but luckily i have a doctor that specialize in pain, he studied in Cuba and he uses this treatment called electromodular acupuncture and this medication called ozono which he injects right in the disc to separates the vertebrate from the disc so the swell goes down and he also uses laser technology to swell down the muscles, and in about 15 days i could walk normal again, i could bend over and do stuff that i normally do, im not at 100% yet i really need to learn stretching exercises to strength my back, but i am supper lucky to have a doctor that really knows what he is doing , best of luck.

      Ya, it took quite a long time...a lot longer than I would of liked, that's for sure. Sorry to hear about your bulge and the pain you went through... never a fun thing. Interesting to hear about that treatment you had and that it worked as well. Never heard about that treatment before but that really intrigues me and I'll have to look into that. And same as well, I'm not 100% either but I'm very close to it and I'm back to practically all activites after a long rehab process. Thanks for sharing that and best of luck as well to you :)

      +Remi Sovran good to hear you are back to all activities.
      could this mean you bulge went away? wouldn't be a good idea to do a follow up MRI to know your current state?

    • @RemiSovran
      @RemiSovran  8 років тому +1

      Thank you Sirsi! I don't know if the bulge necessarily went away completely. I think it's more so at the point we're it has shrunken enough that it doesn't irritate the nerve whatsoever. Note: You can still have a bulge and have no pain. And yes you're 100% right, a follow up MRI would be a good idea but I just haven't come around yet to booking an appointment. It would be really interesting to compare though now :)

    Great to hear you got better !! I've been feeling a little better finally after a year of exercises and a healthier diet .I am very careful about lifting any thing heavy I don't want to reinjur my back....How long did it take before you could start lifting weights again ?

    • @RemiSovran
      @RemiSovran  8 років тому

      +ABEL Gonzalez Hello Abel, to answer your question, I limited myself greatly for about 6 months. I never 'completely' stopped lifting weights, but I was just super careful with the things I did and really cut out a lot of things (e.g., squats, dead-lifts, a lot of lower body stuff). Upper body stuff I could still do, but I just went very light and avoided any tasks that involved a great deal of spinal compression. For instance, did a lot of cable and resistance band exercises. Also, things like chin-ups and light bench never really bothered me as well, but I would proceed with caution if you were to perform this exercises. However, after six months, I started I slowly started incorporating more things, but it wasn't really until about till a year and a half to 2 years until I returned back to lifting normally. I still avoid a lot of things, but that's not to say I can't do things like I did before. Hopefully that answers your question Abel! Glad to hear that you have been feeling better from a healthier diet and exercise. Always great to hear! Also, ya not re-injuring your back is something you need to be careful about, because you always be more susceptible to another back injury in the future! Anyways, all the best moving forward :)

    Thanks for the info, so many people dealing with this issue myself included, it's Summer time here in San Diego and I can't even go surf which is something I love to do. I wake up stiff with pain down my right leg. I will be starting my physical rehabilitation and hopefully get this to go away. No insurance just will and prayers.
    Thanks again and I'm glad to hear you feel better.

All the best to you're physical rehabilitation and I'll be praying for you :)

    My story is incredibly similar. Young, tall, L5-S1 disc prolapse, and not diagnosed until I was in constant pain and couldn't walk. Did the same lying on my front all day, was on Naproxen (stronger than Ibuprofen) and Amitriptyline (as nerve pain relief).
    Took about the same time to get any sort of disc shrinkage, but unlike you, I ended up with permanent damage. Got permanent numbness in my left foot down the outside, and a permanent "pulled calf muscle" feeling. I'll keep an eye on the channel, try some of your core strength stuff, see if it helps.

      Ya, sorry to hear about the permanent damage Phlebas99. It's a very unfortunate situation to go through, especially when you consider the time frame. No one should ever have to go through something like that. Hopefully you find the core training and some other things on the channel helpful :) Also, you may find some useful things on my website as well, if you decide to check that out. Hi Remi! I was recently diagnosed with disc bulge. Since I am a student living alone and away from home, it's been a hard time for me. Even putting on socks and trousers is a big struggle. Thank you so much for making this video:) I am gonna stay away from painkillers and deal with the pain like a warrior haha. Could you please give me some suggestions on when to start exercising? Can I start with walking for a short distance? Currently I have to lie in bed all day because even standing is difficult for me.

    • @RemiSovran
      @RemiSovran  8 років тому +4

      - Lily
      Sorry to hear about that, I can only imagine how hard it may be to be living away from and now suffering such a serious injury. Staying away from painkillers is a good thing and hopefully you can continue to manage without them. In terms of starting exercise, it really depends were your at and how you can function currently with your disc bulge. If you can, I'd suggest, maybe starting with these following exercises and seeing were your at:
      Clams: ua-cam.com/video/EF0-n8DseSE/v-deo.html
      Side lying Hip Abduction: ua-cam.com/video/Ypz8p1v6e6g/v-deo.html
      Mini-Band Side Steps: ua-cam.com/video/kr6cRYUptHg/v-deo.html
      Tall Mini-Band Side Steps: ua-cam.com/video/BnYeP8ymb7M/v-deo.html
      Side Plank Regression: ua-cam.com/video/u3wGXvspE4c/v-deo.html
      McGill Crunch: ua-cam.com/video/aEBcFy4RQkY/v-deo.html
      Bird-Dog: ua-cam.com/video/ZUt-sPWZw8s/v-deo.html
      I'd give these exercise a try right now. If any of them cause you pain, then discontinue them as this would be indication your not ready for the progression yet. As far as walking goes, as along as it doesn't cause you pain, then I'd suggest engaging in walking for various 20 minute intervals if possible :)
      Hopefully this helps :)
      - Remi

    Hi Remi - lower back pain is remarkably unpleasant, as you obviously know. I too struggled for months before getting some official results similar to yours. Time off, started exercises, stopped exercises, perscription drugs, loss of memory, no sitting, lots of lying on the floor, etc, etc. My physio was helpful and realistic, like yours, which was awesome. Eventually walking and swimming and resting enabled my back to improve. I am also documenting my lower back recovery journey on my channel and blog. Thanks for sharing your story.

I know something I wish I did was that I wish I started making video's when I first suffered my injury. June 2022 and I am watching your video. Thank you for your story. I am going through this right now. I been having back pain since 2020 because of COVID working remotely at home, but nothing severe. The end of 2021 I started noticing my back pain was getting a little worst but I took Aleve or Ibuprofen the doctor prescribed.... it would work. March 2022 the pain in my back was so bad I went to my doctor, just like you and given meds / physical therapy. Listening to you I was doing some of the same things you did. I just finish PT and still had the pain. Since, I had such a great therapist, I continue to do the lot of the exercises on my own. The bed or floor ....laying on your stomach will be your best friend.....It truly was mines. You said something your video that rang true. The PT was just doing any and all exercises with me but not knowing what exactly the problems was. I had to fight with the doctor and insurance to get an MRI. Finally got the MRI and Bulge Disc in L4/5. Went back to my doctor for my results and next recourse. I am scheduled to see a specialist 2 months from now. The pain that I am going through couldn't wait. I contacted a Chiropractor who came recommended to me through a co-worker going through the same thing. Today was my first visit and I got a lot questions answered about my back and about the best exercises for my problem. Thank you so much for sharing your story and that horrible pain you had to go through.

      Why even bother deadlifting in the first place? So many people have back problems due to deadlifts. They should be banned! So many other safer exercises to do instead
