    Some of my pet peeves: people who have not left their own city, town, Village, Backwoods and don't realize that depending on where you live in the world asphalt can be pronounced "ash-fault" Or "ass-fault" and don't know what the difference between concrete and cement. Just like with Glue, cement is a binding agent in the process of making concrete which you would pour the foundation of a building or for instance the basement of a house or you could pour a concrete driveway. You would lay pavers to make a walkway or driveway, but you would pour a concrete Foundation or driveway. Once the concrete has been poured, it has now been placed.
    Good job on the roads, there are so many different techniques out there. I'm looking forward to seeing the progression of your layout.

      just because you live somewhere else, doesn't mean pronunciation changes. accents and inflections can be different, but adding letter is something else. location is not an excuse for ignorance in phonetics. Concrete is not poured, it's placed. We get lazy in the industry and say 'pour' because it's become the common generic term, it is however, technically wrong. Just like cement and concrete are used interchangeably even though as you've stated, they're different. It's not a common mix up in the field, but is in job meetings with non-construction people.

    Hi something to remember, if you are modelling pre 1963, the center of each lane in a road will be much darker than the outer parts where the tires run, because 1963 was the year the car manufacturers started adding PCV systems, before this there was a "road draft" pipe that hung down a few inches above the road, it discharged blowby and oil. If you look at a highway from the '50s you can see it quite clearly, just a tip.

    Pavement and concrete are always an interesting challenge to model. I like that you've thought of it from the perspective of what pavement is made of and how it weathers.

      Just finding another way to put all those civil engineering courses to good use! The techniques need a little improvement, but i have a lot of roads to 'pave' so i'm sure there will be an update to this in the future.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  3 місяці тому

      AH! the concrete is easier. I use the AK Interactive concrete texture, add a highly diluted black wash - and if necessary a gray dry brush. i'll have to show that in an upcoming video. it works very well.

    I paint my own figures, Preisner ones are the ones I like best. If you have never tried painting N scale figures, I air brush the figures on the sprues with flesh colored paint first. That way your faces, legs and hands, which leaves just clothing left to do. I use a tooth pick to do this, put a drop of pant on a larger spot and use the tooth pick to move it to cover. Nice technic on the road the results look cool.

    • @AlleghenyNorthern
      @AlleghenyNorthern  3 місяці тому

      i was going to see how much air brushing i could do. i think your method is probably the best approach. i have some pretty fine brushes - i'm going to see if they're of any use for some of the smaller details. fortunately, i have some wild colors from some of my non-train projects, so i should be able to use those for some decent looking outfits for my n scale wardrobes!

      @AlleghenyNorthern  3 місяці тому

      @@MacTrom1 Well... there's one other option. it involves real photographs and some pricey photo-software BUT in theory - you could custom make them. if you did, you could print them on a non-glossy photo paper or cardstock and laminate the images to some styrene. it would be a lot of work but you'd get a unique interior and i'm thinking if the perspectives of the photos ended up being off just a bit - the small nature of n scale might hide it. OR... alternatively, you could 3D print a full interior and model it out. that would also be a lot but both options would be pretty sweet to see.

      @@AlleghenyNorthern ah yeah. I’ve also tried the google search for shop front interiors but didn’t care for them. I’m at a limit to budget and capabilities so I look for the easiest results. I do have plans for woodland scenic combo set of DPM and just plug lighting with their interior roomettes.

    Maybe it’s just the way the camera is picking it up, but it looks like too much constant between where the cars are parked and where the FedEx truck is. I just don’t see a plausible way for the stark contrast to be achieved in a natural way. Maybe road salt could weather the parking spots a bit, but not that drastic. Just my opinion.

      i applied the powder to the spots and pulled the brush towards the road and because of the rough texture, the spots took on most of the powder. i ended up going back first with a dry brush and then with a damp paper towel and taking some of the powder off because it was just a tad thick in the spots. i was debating whether or not to make it a more consistent gray across the spots to model old spots with a newer road but decided ultimately on a more uniform look across both.
