- I searched and searched for a good way to make my layout's roads. Did not like anything I seen, so I went ahead and figured out how to paint them in with cheap acrylic paint and some masking tape.

For a first timer your road looks pretty darn good. The stripes turned out especially well. I recently started airbrushing and really enjoy it.
I was blown away by the stripes. I got my first roads out of the way. the next roads will be better for sure. I'm looking forward to learning airbrushing techniques for sure

Looking awesome, Ron! Would you believe that after building probably over 500 to 1000 car,plane, truck, military vehicle and boat kits since 1955; along with repairs to O gauge trains-- I have yet to buy or even use an airbrush for modeling?
Yikes ! Strictly been paint brushing or similar! So, I give you credit for taking the plunge into the airbrushing arena and your roadway results are great!

Good job on the roads, Ron. The tip on the plumber's putty is also welcome, but I found a sticky putty that teachers use to temporarily hang pictures and posters on the wall that's very similar to the plumber's putty. It's called poster tack, or something like that. Found it in my local Dollar store, believe or not, years ago.
A trick I tried years ago is I went into my local WarMart store and went to the paint department. I looked thru the paint samples and chose the paint samples I thought looked closest to grass, dirt, concrete and blacktop. Then, I took the paint samples outdoors and compared the samples to grass, dirt, concrete and blacktop. I threw away the samples that weren't any good. Then I went back into WarMart and to the crafting aisle and looked thru the craft paints until I found those paints that were closest to my paint sample cards. I bought the craft paints, took them home and used them to paint my grass, dirt, concrete and asphalt roads. I was very pleased with the look the paints gave to my layout.

Thanks for the helpful video. Airbrushing definitely has a learning curve but I can do things with it that spray can or brushing just wont do. I've still got to lay down roads on my HO layout. But on my American Flyer layout, I cheated (well, sorta) I just cut strips of roofing shingles and used blackboard chalk to put the lines down. Your yellow center lines are straighter than some nearby towns I've seen some pretty wavy lines. Gotta wonder what those guys were on when they painted them stripes...
Thanks for watching MygrandpasTrain! Yes there seems to be a lot of different techniques to road building. I researched a lot before I did this. I like processes that are fast and inexpensive. Plus every time I mess up a process, I get one more smarter for the next time :-)
In HO scale....the rule is: " If it looks good at 5 feet away, then it's a winner!
In G scale, if it looks good at 10 feet away. Then it's OK!

Yellow is the worst colour for coverage mate. I've tried different tips, but it remains difficult to deal with. Sorry to hear about your Max, dogs have this habit of meaning as much as anyone in your life. I feel for you. My dog is 18 years old, i dread the day i have to make that decision. Good evening Steven, Yeah that dang yellow. Must use dandelion petals for a base dye or something. Thank you for Max. 19 years is a good pull for your 4 legged friend. That decision will be tough for sure.
Your roads look pretty cool, very imaginative. You’re right about thin layers of paint, they build up over each other, very nice. Keep up the cool work, and keep your chin up…

Thanks for the tip on the butyl tape. I have a ton of it left over from a fan install in my van roof. Never thought to use it as a substitute for BluTac, (which I can never find). Also, your road-striping procedure is a winner, too!

A lot of older model railroaders taught me to use tar paper that you would put down on your roof under the asphalt shingles. For a blacktop road it looks awesome.

Ive heard of that technique. I just didnt want to buy a whole roll of it. Sure it's cheap enough but then I have to store it.
Looks really nice, great tips along the way. If you haven't, you should filter the craft acrylic before putting it into your brush. It can be clumpy. I have a good thinner and a cleaner recipe for craft paint if you're interested.

Thinner:
100ml denatured alcohol
250ml distilled water
1/8 tsp glycerin
Cleaner:
75ml windex w/ammonia
175ml denatured alcohol
10 drops glycerin
100ml = 1/2 cup + 1Tbs
150ml = 2/3 cup

Hello Dan, Awesome your at 031 radius'! I dont even want to start a 3 rail layout till I have 48" or 56" radius. Get it closer to "prototypical". I'm not sure what the 2020 needs. I'm not really "up" on the Lionel stuff like other Fellers are

Lots of good ideas, I have a few of the Walthers streets and am not very impressed by them. But I have a hint that might help you with the paints. Black and white are known as 'neutral' colors, in the sense that they have no level of 'warmth' as opposed to say yellow, blue or red. Black and white are either the absence of any of the visibable wavelengths = black, or white which is the presence of all visible wavelengths. Ok, that is out of the way. The next bit is very practical. A lot of white is needed to lighten another color, and very little black is needed to darken a color. Which is exactly what you found in this video. So, as a sort of hint, if I want to lighten by a certain amount I'll use say 3 dolps of white... If I want to darken a color I'll use just one dolp of black. At your local artist supply store, like a Mchaels or similar you can get something called a color wheel. That is very useful when trying to get a particular color that you want. Anyway, YMMV as usual.

When you're airbrushing, try more air, less paint. Maybe also hold the brush farther back. I find the best results when the paint is almost dry when it hits the surface. Exactly opposite of painting a car (or something shiny) where you want an even coat.

Nicely done on the roads Ron! I made my own using foam core (video last year). I think I went over the subject when I rebuilt Union Station. Well, that area is gonna get redone at some point. I'm still messing with the dam & bridge scene (and the scratch build of course).

Mix a little plaster with your black paint and tape your roads off use a 6 inch putty knife put it down. You can make pot holes. Like in Louisiana HWYs. I use this in a school project . Got a “A”
Congrats on your "A" project grade. I didnt want to do the plastering technique. I did a lot of research about that style. Perhaps my next layout will have plaster roads :-)
Looks like you enjoyed making your streets. I made mine using thin sheets of Silly Winks from Hobby Lobby these are 11x18x1/16" thick foam sheets for about a dollar each. I used the black sheets and painted it with watered down grey craft paint. For a more weathered look I lightly sponge painted the center lines. I used a hobby knife with light pressure to make cracks and lightly painted them black to look like tar patched streets. The texture gives a good representation of asphalt streets.
Sounds like another great technique and the price lines up real nice also :-)
Brush strokes can be eliminated by using a leveler for the paint. I usually use my airbrush. I really liked your idea of painting the cork so it looks like ballast. I see you're not wearing your striped hat and overalls. I've got 'em too along with the red scarf but sometimes I wear the purple one. I would have used the airbrush for painting the sidewalks. Nice video. I wonder if dipping a sponge in the paint and dabbing it would work? Also, I have that airbrush. Its a good one. I learned how to use it, set it up and to clean it. You'll like it once you get going with it

I use black poster board from a craft store. Super cheap and always changeable. Your roads came out very nice.

If you are feeling artistic, add a couple of black lines on your road the width of your cars to simulate Saturday night drags and fun loving kids.

many companies sell street paper that is basically a roll of street printed tape, however It probably looks pretty bad in real life unless you are a good modeler, and the name that bachmann gave it "play tape" does not inspire confidence.
Ive seen pictures of that stuff. Very primitive, but I would have enjoyed it back when I was a little one for sure. I used strings that held my paper route bundles of papers together.

@@classicmodeltrains I had a nice time. I hope that yours was excellent, as well. If you want Santa Fe cars, don't pay more than thirty or forty bucks each for them. I would put the RPO and combo car closer to the top and maybe go a bit higher if you really want them. NYC's are a bit harder to find, so the price moves up a bit. Pennsylvania cars move up some more and Southern tops things out. I don't even look for B&O and Reading. They are hen's teeth. The other ones from out west are like chicken lips, also. Texas Special and C&NW. I don't even know how to price these cars, as I have never even seen them, except in some pictures. The Budd RDC cars do show up now and then. Gook luck and keep coming out with these excellent videos.

Ahhh, Airbrushes, a real Love Hate relationship. I've had a number of them, still do own a few. Love to use them, "HATE" cleaning them, especially after finding my son used and put away my new Paasche without cleaning.

The Butyl tape I ordered it from my RV parts wholesaler. I'm not sure the manufacture, but every roll I've ever got my hands on seems to perform flawlessly.

I went to my first model train show this weekend in Tulare , Calif . and it was really fun . Prices for this stuff left me with sticker shock that's for sure . I think I'll stick to watching guys like you working on cool stuff . Thank you for what you do .
