Allegheny Northern in N Scale
United States
Приєднався 25 сер 2014
Welcome to the Allegheny Northern, a fictitious line Owned by Norfolk Southern in which CSX has trackage rights. Originally a heavy coal haulage line, regulatory burdens and market demands have switched the tonnage from coal to intermodal, chemical, manufacturing, and a small percentage of lumber and scrap traffic. The line exists in the Allegheny mountains somewhere between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg, PA.

N scale Layout Update May '24
May was a lot of yard work and house work - so that means less train room time but a few things were still accomplished. Let's take a look at the few items that were complete, plus, as always, some trains running the layout.

Preparing an N Scale Layout for an Open House
I build my first layout when I was 13 in 1976 using the Atlas layout book. Learned alot, but never built another layout again. In the mid 90s though the early 2000 built up a nice collection, but had know space for a layout. The nearest club is around 50 miles away in Point Richmond California.
50 miles is a long run to get to a club location. i would imagine rural mid-westerners probably have the same issue with a general lack of clubs and distance between locations. That is fortunately not an east-coast problem - we have clubs everywhere. that said, small layouts that can be slipped under a bed when not in use and put on a coffee table when being used would be an option for lack of space. Modules that could be stored in a garage or closet and set up outside in a driveway during nice weather would be another option to break out the collection.
@@AlleghenyNorthern Like alot of people now we have limited space and if I still had a large enough home I be able to create something. Like you I have alot of those 80 footers, but box cars. I picked up a number of SF at a train show and like you said they would look funny on a small railroad. There cool, but I would never run them them unless on a long straight away.
Just ordered three of these from scale trains site with the father's day sale. Thanks.
Enjoy! they're very nice.

Thanks for the update the layout is looking great as always .
We just got our power and internet net back up. Seems a tornado came around 5 miles from us. Like the update and the idea you have on the lighting in the container area. About structures I like to mount mine on bases I can swap out so I can change out industrial buildings and change out rolling stock on op night
I've seen folks that do that with the buildings - that's a cool idea - lets you change rolling stock, locos - even eras if you wanted. cool stuff.
Hi C Mastracci , yea life does get in the way of your layouts from time to time. I probably have only worked about 10 hours on mine the last few months. Been busy with lawn and garden work and other projects. I do enjoy your videos and how to projects you do. But if you just do a video on running trains i would enjoy it also. I have slow down on my purchases, because I have some per orders coming in soon. Thanks for sharing. Have a good week. 😎😎 👍
sometimes it's hard to remember this is the hobby and the other stuff if more important. especially if you're in the middle of a project - i hate to be torn away from in-progress projects! but, it's a hobby for our down times and in summer - there just isn't much of that.
Awesome progress! Can’t wait to meet in Altoona it’s coming fast!
i am definitely looking forward to Altoona.

Im 55 years old and would LOVE to try and build a layout.... if i wasn't ripped off by a real estate deal of my own house for 22 years sale back in 2022 and now that entity is coming for me now, Friday the 24th was 30 days into a 60 day seizure of property by wayne county Michigan (Detroit). Long story short i lose everything ive ever owned cone 30 more days approximately, as i sold my house of 22 years and currently living (not for long) in the house i grew up in. Growing up, since about 1974 was just dad and me, my best friend. Dad died march 15 2016 and since then i lost my best friend and father but deciced to live in his house instead. Its been ib the family over 50 years and seemed like the best move. My wife since 2020 has grown to love the place too. We are both on disability, just been hanging on. We are now about 30 days max from being thrown out on the streets with nothing not even our stuff we collected and owned over our 50+ years. I know, sob story and nobody cares. I dont either anymore and almost certain ill be dead in about 30 days plus one. Not a soul on this planet could care about how much a car guy i am or how much ive always wanted to build a serious model train layout. Dont worry about it y'all, ill be dead by June 25 of this year...hust in time to beat my birthday on the 28th

@@Keyboardfanatiker oh she does fine. t-rex's a pretty heavy so they don't shift a lot in transit. Plus, there's a small amount of poster tack on her belly to keep her in place.
I also bought two Atlas books!
that's how i got started!
I would like to know your recommended locomotive company. I watched another video and the guy claimed to have issues with other companies locomotives running well is now buying only Kato.
Kato makes great running locos so I do recommend them. I'd rate them as low-to mid-level detail. Atlas is another good manufacturer - especially their Master Line Gold Series. ScaleTrains is by far the most highly detailed and I do highly recommend theirs as well. For getting started, some of the Bachmann starters aren't bad - limited in sounds and details, but decent. Their higher end models are very good. Any of those manufacturers I'd highly recommend. If you want to branch out a bit further - Fox Valley is now owned by ScaleTrains and their stuff isn't bad. Hope this helps.
@@AlleghenyNorthern Thanks! I found your comment about the ease of wiring for DDC extremely helpful!! I have decided to go DDC out of the gate. I just ordered a Digitrax starter set. Looking into adding DDC and sound to my two Kato locomotives.
Is it possible to just reverse one leg of that triangle instead of the entire downstream circuit?
without trying to confuse this, technically you're isolating one leg. the short is going to occur between the two top points of the wye. so the bottom of the wye where those two meet is where you isolate and set it to auto-reverse. the reversing section needs to be as long as the longest train using it, otherwise metal wheel sets will cause a short.
@@AlleghenyNorthern I understand now. Thanks for taking time to help a clueless modeler.
not a problem - any time.
I found lots of good info in this series. Very well done. I think any new modeler will benefit by following you.
thanks! hoping to share my struggles and knowledge through the channel so others can get a head start! this is such a fun hobby, but there's a lot to it.
Hi C Mastracci , very good information on DCC. There’s a lot of questions I still have . But I trun to my Zephyr manual and if I can’t find the answer I’ll make a call. Thanks for the information. Have a good weekend. 😎😎 👍
It comes with a pretty decent manual.
Very useful, especially for newbies. One added bit of advice...when I switched to DCC a lot of people sang the praises of "suitcase" connectors. My layout uses 16awg stranded for the bus and 20awg solid for the feeder drops. During the first few months of operation 95% of the problems I encountered turned out to be caused by these connectors. I then switched to the blue "Posi-Tap" brand pieces (part # PT16-18) and operations have been bullet-proof since (at least electrically! Lol).
that's actually the first negative i've heard on the suitcase connectors so that's good advice! all of my connections are twisted connections using a Western Union Splice and some electrical tape - except where wires might need to be disconnected - i typically solder the strands together there and then use a joiner so the strands don't become frayed. I'll have to look and see what the connectors are because they're not suitcase and they're pretty cool although i see continued use might wear them out.
good info, One thing you did not touch on was the ground wire from the command station to the booster. I was surprised to see or maybe you just did not mention about power districts. You can get by with a small layout. this is a basic DCC video packed with great advise. Question do you use a power districts on your large layout? Liked the series.
i did forget to mention the grounding wire. it's visible in the one shot from behind the unit but i skipped right over it. good call, definitely don't forget the grounding wire! i briefly mentioned power districts but didn't really get into it much. I need to do a better job a districting myself and actually wired the layout in preparation for that - i just need to set up the management. helped this entire heap was once block control so setting up districts already has the isolated sections to wire to otherwise it would be a major undertaking.
Nice Looking and Nice Info !!!!
thanks!
I wish I can hear an N scale DCC/Sound loco in person, but everyone I know does O and HO scale. Do you know how it sounds compared to an HO loco? I'm assuming HO is louder but is N scale sound like "it's almost there but not quite as loud" or is it a " night and day difference" , in volume levels ?
The volume can be adjusted louder or softer based on your preference. the difference is in the quality of speaker. the more space you have to install a speaker, the more tech you can cram in there so larger scales can produce throatier sounds. But the tech has come a long way and so even in N-scale, you get decent loco sounds that while just a little tinny - sound pretty decent.
This was a very entertaining and informative video. I've never understood much about DCC operations, but this video has pushed that knowledge along. Your speed matching reminds me of playing with Arduino and sensors. The numbers 255 and 128 were prominent in that application too. Thank you for your efforts, I feel your frustration and pain with the number games.
You're spot on - i do believe Arduino operates of the same hexadecimal coding. it can be very frustrating especially if your DCC system doesn't simplify it the way the Digitrax system does.
This is really helpful. I’m only just beginning to explore the hobby, so this and your other videos are a great resource. I have done technical communication for decades. You mentioned being new to DCC yourself. That’s actually a great perspective for teaching like this, because you know what’s confusing and where the pitfalls are. (The worst people to try to teach basics are usually the engineers who designed things.) And yes, women are definitely in your audience.
i've found a lot of the articles written and a lot of the videos made already assume the user knows something about the technical jargon and components they reference. so when you get into the video, you're already lost. that makes it intimidating to start - i was intimidated - but DCC even in basic form is so amazing for what it allows the user to do - it's the way to go for a new layout!
Great video and cool layout. Also nice to have somebody else do some switching in N scale. Switching sessions on YT seem to be H0 scale 90% of the time. Would love to get an engine with sound myself at some point - maybe even a SD40-2. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Ah, the SD40-2 - some of best sounds come from that loco!
Good info! Watched over 3 mornings. These were very hard selections to speed match for sure. I usually push 8 to silence my sound ones thisbin turn eliminates the start delay. Then i juat throttle to 1 and wait a bit when I have them hooked together and using in real time (to let the sound unit "spool up")
The problem is - i so love that startup sequence and all those sounds. you can actually set the V5 decoders not to play a startup or have delay and then they match right up but i'm simply to attached to that functionality to sacrifice it. eventually, i'll upgrade all my main locos to the v5 decoders and problem solved!
@AlleghenyNorthern That will sure solve the issue hehehehe
I also put fasted engine in back doing more pulling on train sometime helping them run together
cool
thank you for sharing your experience.
I’ll definitely have to take points from this now that I have a huge layout lol
Hi. All I just wanna say is *You have a very beautiful beautiful N scale layout* Congrats !. Greetings from the other side of the world, my friend. This is John from Santiago de Chile, South America. Cheers !.
thanks!
Enjoyed every minute.
Hi C Mastracci , I don’t think I’ll be trying to speed matching two different companies locomotives together. That was a good example of trying to match to completely different style of locomotives. Thanks for sharing. Have a good week. 😎😎 👍
It is truly a PITA. I haven't found a good way to do it - and that consist is three different manufacturers with three way different gearing. the easiest thing to do is stay in the same manufacturer - you might still need to tweak a bit, but it'll be much closer to start! the decoder difference is huge, too. Enjoy!
Looking great. Keep up the good work, before long your layout may evolve into a more grandeur spectacle 😉
Wow, this is a really old vid - i completely forgot about this stage! This layout has been in construction for an additional 7 years after this video was shot. it's not even in the same room anymore and is about 3x the size, runs on DCC instead of DC and is about 80% sceniced. check out some of the newer updates to see where it is now!
So would a very low throttle start, as a operator procedure negate the sound-file lag with a long train?
sort of but not completely. the ESU decoder wants a little bit of juice before it starts it's symphony so usually the other two locos are already out of the gate. it does, however, minimize the amount of shoving/grinding the speedy locos do. the sounds are about 2-3 seconds, and that's a lot of time when things are moving!
If you setup consist locomotives to a consist address in LokProgrammer, is there a way to have the decoder also respond to the locomotives own address? Say, you have two locomotives which are 200 and 210 setup to consist address 20. So, when you use locomotive address 20 in the controller then both locomotives will respond since they're in that consist. Say you want to then run locomotive 200 by itself and leave 210 behind. Is there a way to set it up so that when you use locomotive address 200 in the controller then that locomotive will respond independently? Is that something that can be setup in LokProgrammer?
I don't use the LokProgrammer, so I'm not sure. i do know in a consist address you can set various features to different locos in a consist such as light and sound functions but i've not seen someone actually adjust the motor performance. if so, you wouldn't need to speed match as the consist setting could do it each time you set up a consist. to my knowledge, that type of setup isn't available... yet. however, to have the ability for a consisted decoder to read back train actions and automatically compensate would be fantastic. i could see that being a future option at the rate tech is updating.
I used to have 7 digitrax sound decoders and ended up replacing 5 of those with ESU LockSound. The rest of my locomotives have LokSound except for a Bachman with Econami and another Bachmann with TCS WowSound and a BLI with Paragon 4. I speed matched them as best as I could but problem is to match them exactly with ESU is almost impossible so what I do is bring my throttle to 2% and wait for both to catch up to each other and then start speeding up. They all stop about the same. But even startup difference between Paragon 4 and ESU LokSound is very difficult to match because of the sound files used. I will only buy locomotives with ESU LokSound going forward. It was too much of a pain before and besides, the sound on Digitrax is pure junk anyways. I'll replace the other two (Kato P42 with Digitrax) at a later time with ESU LokSound. I also used to have some older Kato locomotives where I had to use TCS decoders which I sold on eBay. Again, my rule for DCC going forward is only to use ESU LokSound.
can't agree more. ESU has the market on sound decoders. BLI is not my favorite to begin with but even their decoders don't seem anywhere near as advanced as LokSound V5 decoders - from the settings, to the control, to the sound and movement interaction. I'm glad ScaleTrains and Atlas have adopted them as factory standards for their DCC & sound equipped locos - their audio library is truly remarkable.
Interesting, even for DC users. I want to switch to DCC at the end of this year 👍🏻
definitely do it - you're not going to regret it. that is until you have a nervous breakdown speed matching locos BUT once you get it - it's fantastic. and to be honest, this video is worse than most attempts at speed matching and i did that on purpose with three different manufacturers and two different decoders - it's the perfect storm of "holy hell why did i do this" just to show worst case.
Thank you for the detailed explanation. Looks like I made the right choice buying two of the same scale trains locos.
you really can't go wrong with ScaleTrains so count that as a win for awesome locos and for not having to speed match!
@@AlleghenyNorthern Honestly they are less expensive than Kato DCC Sound offerings and others. Its a no brainier to buy them.
This video was awesome. I remember being a kid alwsys playing with the train at Christmas. Been looking at making one of my spare rooms into a train room. Trying to figure out how much debt I wanna go in for this hobby lol
it is definitely not the most budget-friendly hobby, but start small and work up. not just small in scale, though i do recommend highly going with N scale, but start with a loop, some turnouts for fun, a loco and a handful of cars. once you get the bug real bad to go for a full layout - that's when things get interesting.
6:40 what station platform is that?
that's Kato's Island platform.
Good info 👍🏻
Im surpriced I have applied it sparingly with wheels turning and no matter how smooth it seems the loco clumpety clumps along not smooth at all?
i recommend using a very small brush and almost brushing it on. keep it away from the flange of the wheel and make sure you're spinning your wheels about 15-30% throttle - enough to get good rotation, but not enough to spin it wildly out of control. make sure you keep the wheels turning until it goes from that light green color to almost a green-transparent. the rotation helps it to stay smooth and the thin coat from the brush ensures it doesn't clump.
Hey I've got a question for you. I only have an fdm 3d printer (really for larger/engineering parts, not high detail models/miniatures like an sla printer), and have been trying to find someone who has a lot of experience 3d printing stuff, especially for N scale. I'm putting a mine on my layout and I'm having trouble finding mine-sized equipment (haven't found any that is appropriate size at all). I know you get a lot of your models 3d printed. Do you just find them randomly on ebay or do you have someone you specifically go to for commissions?
a couple of the pieces i picked up from folks selling their wares at train shows - most notably the N scale convention in Altoona, PA. the rest were purchased from Shapeways through their online store.
