- EPJ Residence is a cleverly designed home on a narrow plot in Ernakulam city. Located on a site near a busy commercial area, the house includes open garden spaces to create a peaceful escape from the city noise. The surrounding warehouses and a vacant plot match the client's need for privacy and limited interaction with neighbours, making the home a quiet retreat for a family of three.
The design features a forecourt that leads to a reflective pool and a double-height living room, creating a smooth flow between indoor and outdoor areas. The forecourt includes a covered garage, and the reflective pool, decorated with tropical plants and a central Plumeria tree, adds a calming effect. Large swing doors connect the pool area to the living room, enhancing the sense of space and openness.
The house layout includes cozy dining, kitchen, and bedroom areas at the back, with an additional courtyard providing more privacy and green space. A straight staircase leads to the first floor, where two bedrooms overlook the central pool and living space. These bedrooms also open to a long balcony at the back, offering views of the rear courtyard. A staircase from this balcony leads to a roofed gathering area on the top floor, providing wide views of the city.
The design philosophy focuses on creating a peaceful haven in the city. Moving from the noisy urban environment to the calm interior of the home is made possible through a series of thoughtfully designed spaces, including the forecourt, pool, passage, and living area. The EPJ Residence showcases how living in an enclosed garden-like setting can offer a restful and urban living experience.

how do you deal with the mosquitos and other bugs
Classy...
Design looks impressive but is it practical for safe and comfortable living? In Kerala mosquitoes is a major issue and think this kind of open space are just not livable
Definitely, for that you have to define living. Kerala is a tropical state with lots of sun and rain. So is Bali. Does the open resorts and villas seem empty?. We architects(humans) design habitable housing for other humans. Habitable meaning to provide shelter from primary environmental conditions. We are building houses in an already pre existing microcosm. That doesn’t give us the upper hand to restrict any other forms of life, just for our comfort. We solve one problem at a time. Then we keep on solving problems. Thats how the non living building interacts with the living environment. Now in your particular question i am not sure about what the architect has done specifically, but to some extent we can use specific landscaping, water features and elements like fishes to reduce the effect of mosquitoes to an extent.
People generally have a misconception that once the building is done no need to take care of it. Timely Maintenance determines the overall quality and lifespan of the structure. Consider a terrarium, just because we filled the bowl with soil, filled it with decorative elements, moss and a few drops of water doesn’t help it to be alive without effort. Nature doesn’t work that way. There would be algae, parasites, dead waste and worms in the bowl which has to be cleaned and maintained. So is a house. 😊
❤
It's heaven on earth. How about Mosquitoes?, as I gave good numbers of videos, rather NO ONE SPEAKS ABOUT MOS.......
