Saul has forever changed how I make my own burritos. That fried cheese then tortilla flip is amazing.

It's funny I've been doing this for years when I would warm up a store bought burrito I would put the cheese in the pan first to get it a little fried and then throw my burritos in and then flip it onto my plate and boom. A kids smothered burrito. Lol
Making a breakfast burrito, it works the same. Cook your layer of eggs - like you're making an omelette - in the pan, add cheese on top, then lay the tortilla over, press down to adhere and scootch it around to loosen from the pan, then do the flip. Add bacon bits, small potatoes, salsa, whatever, and roll it up. Perfect.

I've watched so many episodes of this series and this is the first time a level 3 chef has actually just said "I'm a level 3 chef" Rather than something like"I've worked in the restaurant business for 267 years, owned my own restaurant empire in 16 countries, and made a 6 course meal for 2 different Popes and the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan"
I just watched another in which they did the same -- and same comments on that one, too! I'm guessing after the did a few the producer started sitting down with the levels 3s and giving them a Little Talk. "Yeahyeahyeah, we get it, chef-ego go here, standard. But we have a format to work with here -- it's right there in the title! And going for... take 56!"
It's nice for aspiring chefs to hear the background of people they want to admire and emulate. Maybe it doesn't work for you but some people find it interesting. It's a highly competitive and brutal field, I like to hear their accomplishments

I love the level 3 chief. He does not seem like the guy who went to an expensive school but the guy who had made burritos way too long and perfected his craft.

He's the first level that I've noticed wasn't associated with ICE.
I think he's the only level 3 so far that wasn't from that Institution of Culinary Arts or something. He probably owns his own restaurant somewhere.

I mean, it's pretty easy to make dough in general, you make dough ahead of time too, not at the same time you are ready to cook.

i feel like in a lot of these the level 2 ends up being the better looking one, at least just on camera. and here, gabrielle makes an unreal burrito. the short rib had to be amazing. unfortunately for her she went up against a true master, a virtuoso, a god of the burrito, Saul.
You can tell how nervous Saul initially was. He's much stiffer in this video, not making eye contact with the camera as much. So awesome to see him, then and now!

My boyfriend and I checked out Saul’s restaurant last night and met Saul himself! Really nice guy. He even made us that exact burrito and MY GOD It was Unbelievably delicious. Definitely The best burrito I’ve ever tasted hands down!

I recomend u this all the time. Just make sure to use white cheese. If u use a yellow cheddar will had a strange taste. Mozzarella o queso cocido are the best. And thin tortillas, that key for a good burrito!

I actually really like all 3 of these people, 1 is super practical, 2 is a huge step up from basic cook and isn't the worst parts of the Food Network distilled into a man, and the level 3 chef made a great product by really knowing his stuff instead of just using hard to obtain expensive ingredients.

That's a Mexican cooking technique call "Tatemado" which is literally burning fruits, vegetables (make them sweeter) and fresh chiles (make them spicer)
I actually learned something really important from Saul on rewatch because I used to think Gabrielle one felt more complex than his especially considering some of thr crazy stuff level 3 do in the show, Its that one of the important skills you can have in cooking is realising when you have enough. Saul remembered the first rule of good burito which I forgot which is you dont over stuff it. He spent his time wisely building complex sauches and let the rest of the ingredients be itself. I made it from scratch recently, really really good burito!! If you make enough of the suaces its also one you can have often thanks to you the simplicity of actually layering it!
This is the first time I actually feel like I could try what the level 3 Chef does at home.
Finally we're not smoking food with hay or building the kitchen from scratch.
We're gonna start today by laying down stones for our traditional Mexican outdoor oven, then move out to the yard to assist my cow with the birth of her calf. Our burrito should really come together in mid-March. Hasta luego!

Yes, this is the first video I've seen where I actually liked the Level 3's the most, and where the recipe looked both approachable and not some gussied up recipe that stretches the definition of the food being cooked. Plus Saul's cheese technique on the tortilla was pretty cool and something I can add to my cooking skills.

All three were great. Food is a continuum of tastes and differences. I will watch more of these competitions and expand my ability and appreciation.
Saul is so chill you see everyone else with a bunch of ingredients on their desks, meanwhile he has a couple things sitting there while he cooks a chorizo and talks about his childhood

Bring Saul back again. He’s one of the few level 3 chefs that seems like he enjoys cooking and eating his own food. Sometimes the pro chefs are just so obviously dead inside, they don’t even react to the food they made.
The little proud smile when he had when he presented his finished burrito was everything 💕
