I don't see a problem Nintendo doing this. If Nintendo is aiming for a $299 or $399 dollars price tag for this switch 2 consoles. If this switch 2 consoles are going to have the same power as a standard ps4 console. A $299 switch 2 console and a $399 switch 2 makes sense. The $299 switch 2 will be all digital console with no backwards compatibility and the $399 switch 2 will have backwards compatibility.
I could be wrong, but I think Nintendo will probably do one model with a cartridge slot. Removing it means those people will NEVER impulse buy a game in stores that do sell their games physically. I don’t know though- maybe even Nintendo is moving towards being done with physical in a generation or two, which would be sad. Currently I buy all the “big” Nintendo games and specific games on cartridge, and the rest are digital. I like the divide more or less how it is now on Switch.
Instead, I believe the cheaper $299 model with a 5.5” LCD and 64GB. The more expensive $349 model have a 7” OLED and 128GB storage. While the series X may hold back games that we would like not to be hold back, it does generate about half of Xbox revenue. I can’t see Nintendo holding back backward compatibility for the cheaper sku or having no cartridge slot(since most of the user does use them and Nintendo is a more conservative companies), the hardware is probably a better choice to cut cost like OLED or storage

cartridge slots cost nothing to implement, so the console would not be cheaper if you didn't have it. let's say the next console is a 3rd generation DS where the top screen can come off to dock and play on the TV, basically an evolution of the Wii U for that part. They could have one cartridge slot where it would be a DS to 3DS situation, same cartridge shape, but they add a little plastic piece to the new cartridge to prevent users from placing it in the switch. And then have a second SKU where they insert 3DS hardware into it, with more advanced glassless 3D to the top screen, and have a 3DS cartridge slot to play DS and 3DS games and this would be $50 more for the added features... but this scenario would make more sense just to have one SKU so you can make all games have glassless 3D and then maybe do a 2DS type of scenario a few years later.
I’m leaning towards one SKU myself but if they do two, I could see the premium being an OLED screen and the base model being an LCD. That way people have options; someone like you for instance Rob might lean towards the base model because it’s cheaper and you rarely play undocked vs someone who spends the majority of their time playing undocked might lean towards purchasing the OLED model for the better screen
i can definitely see them releasing two versions at launch. the cheaper model would probably either just be an lcd version or i can also see it being a "lite" version that is purely a handheld. given the fact that nintendo primarily markets towards kids, families, and casual gamers, i think a cheaper model would do quite well. parents probably wouldn't want to buy their kids the more expensive model. and casual gamers probably would opt for the cheaper sku as well.

It's correct to say that, non-trivially often, having multiple SKUs doesn't benefit overall hardware sales. Even outside gaming hardware, introducing more device variants just makes things overly complicated. Any difference between SKUs has to be clearly communicate and communicated to consumers. Too many and/or unclear feature differentiation axes just muddies the waters with end-user confusion.
Well, you do have three different versions of the Switch, even though they were launched at three different times. And they all work well with all released games so far. And they have all sold well. So I don't know, for me, it makes sense to have two or more versions since launch. The only problem could be to have them all available in high volume numbers for the first holiday season.
I think it would make a lot of sense for two version releases mainly because it’s two systems in one… so if some people want to use it mainly as a docked system they can get the more powerful one but if you use it mainly as a handheld then maybe you can get the bigger screen one.. we need choices. But at the same time I also agree that maybe just focusing on one could be better as a one size fits all also makes it easier for parents to buy

I think it would be a good idea (asuming that they are going to keep and even expand the hybrid concept) to get a second version if the main console it's priced at 500 dollars, wich I see it as posible because of the tech the rumours said it has, I think the second version should be just a traditional console with all the hybrid features removed, but that keeps the power so we don't have a series s situation, and it could be priced at 300 or something like that, so it would catch the attention of people like you Rob, that don't care about the portable nature of the switch, but only if it's that pricey, if the main switch 2 device it's like 350 or 400 dollars, then just stick with one model, and in like 2 years release what I said, or a lite version, or even both

I bought a Series S back when the PS5 was impossible to get. Primarily for 3rd party stuff the Switch was never going to get and as a Game Pass machine. I love it. After I got my PS5, my Series S has become an Xbox 360 retro console and I play it a lot. I don’t think Nintendo will do 2 SKUs at launch but will do a more premium model down the line. Even if they do go with 2 SKUs, as long as both machines have the same power, I could see the cheaper model selling well.
Great video Rob but I would like to add a little bit of a caveat. I think Nintendo will do as two SKU approach, but in my opinion is going to be an handheld only SKU and SKU with the dock. If I had to speculate on price, I can see the handheld only model range from $299 to $399 and for the dock model, I could see $399 to $449. And my reasoning for the price range is because we really don’t know how powerful the systems is really going to be, and how much memory it’s going to have, and if the dock itself has substantial computing power that can raise the price of the dock model as well. This is just a hypothesis by the way.😅
I think Nintendo should avoid the full digitalization of their consoles. Moreover they should strengthen their physical releases adding again printed manuals. This is something that would make Nintendo even more special. Physical releases are a very important part of the video game experience and it would be very sad if we lose it.
I was one of those people who chose the white Wii U on purpose! I hated that they purposely made it a memory downgrade over another color option. I love the aesthetic of white tech - especially now that so much current tech is super samey and relies on blacks and greys. Lowkey hope that Switch 2 launches with a white variant but we’ll see what the thing actually looks like

Two models is only a mistake if the difference is the design. One idea I had, if a new dock is not required, Nintendo could package a new switch without a dock (for all those switch owners who'd use the original dock), to keep it below the $400 price.
Reasonable situations for multiple sku's at launch for a cheaper entry. A dockless package if it's compatible with the og dock. Of course a switch2 and switch2 lite. I think anything else either increases the price of the base model or reduces the power/capabilities. However I don't see anything wrong with a base model and oled model at launch., but I think the point of the convo is how much power can we get for the cheapest price to appeal to the mainstream market. Which is the base model. I agree a series x vs series s situation is a terrible idea.
Listen to this idea: Nintendo should make the next Switch with USB C Thunderbolt, then sell one with normal dock HDMI output. Then 2 years later, they can just release a PRO dock with in built GPU. No need to change the structure of the console, just add in external GPU.
From what I understand, the data shows Series S outsells Series X by a notable margin. So having a cheaper model doesn't always result in the cheaper version being undesirable. It seems that people prefer the S as a cheaper Game Pass machine, maybe as a secondary system next to their PS5 or Switch.
I just dont like the multiple versions at launch when its different power levels but i don't mind extra storage versions, i hate how MS did it because it means the low end model becomes the base for devs and i want to see generational jumps really mean something like they used to.
If it's just a more powerful Switch a Switch lite 2 could work at launch. What we don't know is what improvements will be made to the joycons. We also could run into supply problems if resources are divided. I agree, Bad idea. Use success of Base model to sell future iterations.
If one of them has a more sensible screen size I think it could be great. I just cant buy into the desktop handheld experience. They had this figured out already before the switch with their handhelds and the switch was a step back. The lite is a good attempt to fix it but no docking and still a bit too clumsy to use leaves it a tough spot.

There's the Lite with 5.5 inch, Standard with 6.2 inch and Oled with 7 inch, personally I like 7 inch for modern handheld maybe 8 inch for Switch 2 but no bigger than 8 inch for a handheld, I like a 7 or 8 inch screen as Switch isn't just playing older style handheld games its playing 3D AAA games
You gave example of Series S saying people more likely to buy premium version, but there is other way around: Series S got 75% of current gen Xbox sales. But I agree that it wouldn't be a good choice to divide fans this way for Switch 2
Nintendo needs to release both versions, and just have code in a box games released physically to cater for both markets. Letting existing switch owners play their library of backwards compatibile games on switch 2. If Nintendo doesn't do it we will be seeing more expensive games released on switch 2, and I don't want to be paying £59.99 for first party switch 2 titles. Which could rise to £64.99 or £69.99 throughout the life of the console.
The new rumor that's going around is that it's going to only be 1 sku and it's performance will be close to a base PS4, I also agree with you Rob there shouldn't be two versions of a game console too, I feel they (the companies) are just throwing away money at that point.
My personal belief is that there is a possibility that there are two separate brands of hardware coming from Nintendo. One brand carries the switch name and focuses on portable gaming while maintaining docking capabilities and backwards compatibility with switch 1 games. This portable console may turn out to be the rumored "Switch Pro". I can see the second hardware brand focused on traditional console gaming while potentially also keeping switch 1 and 2 backwards compatibility. This console may be the one rumored to be able to run Uneal Engine 5 (Matrix Demo)
@@barcster2003 perhaps it would be a mistake.... however my speculation leaves room for a "switch pro" to remain a hybrid device (though portable/casual focused) retaining the same audience while a second console would enable an expansion into 3rd party support allowing games such as GTA6, Resident Evil 9 or whatever whatever else cannot be played on the switch/pro. It's kind of win/win for all. Mistake or not, it would definitely make sense of the conflicting report of Nintendo's next gen console having various degrees of upgraded processing.

Here's why two "generic boring Sony naming scheme" systems could be bad. Then again, there were several PS5 models in the first 2 years, so I doubt Nintendo will have to worry if they release one AND a cheaper or alternative variation that actually changes something. Xbox doesn't seem to have an issue either, considering the Series S still has its audience like the Series X does. And if Xbox has no problem, Nintendo definitely won't, only americans are going to complain when the handheld performs like a handheld and not a Playstation 9 for the price of a chocolate bar, or has any more than half a variant.
I'd be surprised if they don't release a digital only version of the console. Game sales are continuing to trend mostly digital I think it's over half now. So much like the PS5 it makes sense to offer the same console just with or without a slot.
They won't release a digital only version, their main audience is Japan, not america, and unlike america, Japan is still primarily a physical nation. Microsoft and Sony only do it since the west is their main focus these days where digital and online only is less likely to be contested. If they make ANY omissions they would opt for either, a bigger storage model, a model without a docking option, or both in one cheaper alternative package.

It is going to be a switch oled and a switch lite type of thing. Nintendo is not going to make / create a series x vs s power difference for their switch 2. There may be more storage and a better screen but feature wise if they make two versions that will be the only difference and the price. All their games will play the same on both versions of the switch 2.
I just hope the first model is an OLED. Will be super disappointing if they make us wait 3 years for a good screen version. I don’t even care if it’s an extra $100. Just give us an OLED option.
The 2DS comes to mind. The cheaper alternative flooding the market destroyed the desire for the majority of devs to put any extra polish on 3DS titles that would need the power of the new 3DS instead. Hyrule warriors is the only non new 3DS title that they spent extra polish for when used in a new 3ds. It looks no where as good. on the regular 3ds.
The Series S outsold the X, until very recently. Also there was a recent report that the PS4 Pro only sold about 5 million units. People don't always buy the more premium version.
I think if they go this route, it will most likely be split between storage capacity and mostly the same features otherwise. My hope is 256 GB and 512 GB models. 32 GB is definitely not enough.
Digital only and a cartridge system makes sense . I don't like it but I believe nintnedo might want to test these waters and see how a cheaper digital only system performs against what they currently believe is that physical media is still very important to them . I fear for what might happen though and how this might influence nintnedo going forward. It will be a sad day when nintnedo eventually goes all digital
I don't think the switch 2 should be backwards compatible with switch games. Nintendo should release two digital versions of the switch 2 with different storage sizes. People that want to play switch games should keep their original switch. People want to sell off their original switch console and turn a profit once they buy switch 2.

1% chance at best for even a literal switch 2 to be made at all. @@shanestevick679 keep in mind Sony/microsfot sell consoles at lost but Nintendo has always sold theirs at profit. so if to make a profit they need to price it at $500 that's why they're do. it'll sell lots too. people will pay anything to play their games. just like right now they accept that swtich is over priced 15 ish year old tech that struggles.
I bought a Series S back when the PS5 was impossible to get. Primarily for 3rd party stuff the Switch was never going to get and as a Game Pass machine. I love it. After I got my PS5, my Series S has become an Xbox 360 retro console and I play it a lot. I don’t think Nintendo will do 2 SKUs at launch but will do a more premium model down the line. Even if they do go with 2 SKUs, as long as both machines have the same power, I could see the cheaper model selling well.

Great video Rob but I would like to add a little bit of a caveat. I think Nintendo will do as two SKU approach, but in my opinion is going to be an handheld only SKU and SKU with the dock. If I had to speculate on price, I can see the handheld only model range from $299 to $399 and for the dock model, I could see $399 to $449. And my reasoning for the price range is because we really don’t know how powerful the systems is really going to be, and how much memory it’s going to have, and if the dock itself has substantial computing power that can raise the price of the dock model as well. This is just a hypothesis by the way.😅
I think Nintendo should avoid the full digitalization of their consoles. Moreover they should strengthen their physical releases adding again printed manuals. This is something that would make Nintendo even more special. Physical releases are a very important part of the video game experience and it would be very sad if we lose it.
Bought a regular switch in 2018 and barely used it. Ended up selling it. I got a switch lite about 2 years ago and i play it every single day.
Iv played not docked for about 3 hours in total in 7 yrs iv played docked for 1000s of hours iwpuld never play zelda etc portable
I was one of those people who chose the white Wii U on purpose! I hated that they purposely made it a memory downgrade over another color option. I love the aesthetic of white tech - especially now that so much current tech is super samey and relies on blacks and greys. Lowkey hope that Switch 2 launches with a white variant but we’ll see what the thing actually looks like

It was an odd choice to me - aesthetically speaking the models were so different, and just having a preference for one over the other meant I missed out on more internal storage, etc :( Before too long, we'll figure out what the deal is gonna be with the Switch 2 and its marketing. That said, I too wish they didn't make me have to shell swap my Wii U just to keep the white one, AND more memory.
Two models is only a mistake if the difference is the design. One idea I had, if a new dock is not required, Nintendo could package a new switch without a dock (for all those switch owners who'd use the original dock), to keep it below the $400 price.
Reasonable situations for multiple sku's at launch for a cheaper entry. A dockless package if it's compatible with the og dock. Of course a switch2 and switch2 lite. I think anything else either increases the price of the base model or reduces the power/capabilities. However I don't see anything wrong with a base model and oled model at launch., but I think the point of the convo is how much power can we get for the cheapest price to appeal to the mainstream market. Which is the base model. I agree a series x vs series s situation is a terrible idea.
Listen to this idea:
Nintendo should make the next Switch with USB C Thunderbolt, then sell one with normal dock HDMI output.
Then 2 years later, they can just release a PRO dock with in built GPU. No need to change the structure of the console, just add in external GPU.
Every nintendo console has had a code name released a year minimum before launch, we will get a codename this year with 2025 release

From what I understand, the data shows Series S outsells Series X by a notable margin. So having a cheaper model doesn't always result in the cheaper version being undesirable. It seems that people prefer the S as a cheaper Game Pass machine, maybe as a secondary system next to their PS5 or Switch.
I just dont like the multiple versions at launch when its different power levels but i don't mind extra storage versions, i hate how MS did it because it means the low end model becomes the base for devs and i want to see generational jumps really mean something like they used to.
If it's just a more powerful Switch a Switch lite 2 could work at launch. What we don't know is what improvements will be made to the joycons. We also could run into supply problems if resources are divided. I agree, Bad idea. Use success of Base model to sell future iterations.
If one of them has a more sensible screen size I think it could be great. I just cant buy into the desktop handheld experience. They had this figured out already before the switch with their handhelds and the switch was a step back. The lite is a good attempt to fix it but no docking and still a bit too clumsy to use leaves it a tough spot.

There's the Lite with 5.5 inch, Standard with 6.2 inch and Oled with 7 inch, personally I like 7 inch for modern handheld maybe 8 inch for Switch 2 but no bigger than 8 inch for a handheld, I like a 7 or 8 inch screen as Switch isn't just playing older style handheld games its playing 3D AAA games
You gave example of Series S saying people more likely to buy premium version, but there is other way around: Series S got 75% of current gen Xbox sales. But I agree that it wouldn't be a good choice to divide fans this way for Switch 2
Nintendo needs to release both versions, and just have code in a box games released physically to cater for both markets. Letting existing switch owners play their library of backwards compatibile games on switch 2. If Nintendo doesn't do it we will be seeing more expensive games released on switch 2, and I don't want to be paying £59.99 for first party switch 2 titles. Which could rise to £64.99 or £69.99 throughout the life of the console.
The new rumor that's going around is that it's going to only be 1 sku and it's performance will be close to a base PS4, I also agree with you Rob there shouldn't be two versions of a game console too, I feel they (the companies) are just throwing away money at that point.

My personal belief is that there is a possibility that there are two separate brands of hardware coming from Nintendo. One brand carries the switch name and focuses on portable gaming while maintaining docking capabilities and backwards compatibility with switch 1 games. This portable console may turn out to be the rumored "Switch Pro".
I can see the second hardware brand focused on traditional console gaming while potentially also keeping switch 1 and 2 backwards compatibility. This console may be the one rumored to be able to run Uneal Engine 5 (Matrix Demo)
I think this would be a mistake. They went hybrid to combine their development not to separate it again.
@@barcster2003 perhaps it would be a mistake.... however my speculation leaves room for a "switch pro" to remain a hybrid device (though portable/casual focused) retaining the same audience while a second console would enable an expansion into 3rd party support allowing games such as GTA6, Resident Evil 9 or whatever whatever else cannot be played on the switch/pro. It's kind of win/win for all.
Mistake or not, it would definitely make sense of the conflicting report of Nintendo's next gen console having various degrees of upgraded processing.

I don't think they're going to have two versions of the Switch 2, but I think they'll continue selling the Switch Lite or another cheaper model so they can have a $200 option and $400 option.
Here's why two "generic boring Sony naming scheme" systems could be bad.
Then again, there were several PS5 models in the first 2 years, so I doubt Nintendo will have to worry if they release one AND a cheaper or alternative variation that actually changes something.
Xbox doesn't seem to have an issue either, considering the Series S still has its audience like the Series X does.
And if Xbox has no problem, Nintendo definitely won't, only americans are going to complain when the handheld performs like a handheld and not a Playstation 9 for the price of a chocolate bar, or has any more than half a variant.
You can't beat the convenience of downloading a game off the eshop in ten minutes and playing it straight away.

I'd be surprised if they don't release a digital only version of the console. Game sales are continuing to trend mostly digital I think it's over half now. So much like the PS5 it makes sense to offer the same console just with or without a slot.
They won't release a digital only version, their main audience is Japan, not america, and unlike america, Japan is still primarily a physical nation.
Microsoft and Sony only do it since the west is their main focus these days where digital and online only is less likely to be contested.
If they make ANY omissions they would opt for either, a bigger storage model, a model without a docking option, or both in one cheaper alternative package.

It is going to be a switch oled and a switch lite type of thing. Nintendo is not going to make / create a series x vs s power difference for their switch 2. There may be more storage and a better screen but feature wise if they make two versions that will be the only difference and the price. All their games will play the same on both versions of the switch 2.

I just hope the first model is an OLED. Will be super disappointing if they make us wait 3 years for a good screen version. I don’t even care if it’s an extra $100. Just give us an OLED option.
The 2DS comes to mind. The cheaper alternative flooding the market destroyed the desire for the majority of devs to put any extra polish on 3DS titles that would need the power of the new 3DS instead. Hyrule warriors is the only non new 3DS title that they spent extra polish for when used in a new 3ds. It looks no where as good. on the regular 3ds.

The Series S outsold the X, until very recently. Also there was a recent report that the PS4 Pro only sold about 5 million units. People don't always buy the more premium version.
I think if they go this route, it will most likely be split between storage capacity and mostly the same features otherwise. My hope is 256 GB and 512 GB models. 32 GB is definitely not enough.
Digital only and a cartridge system makes sense . I don't like it but I believe nintnedo might want to test these waters and see how a cheaper digital only system performs against what they currently believe is that physical media is still very important to them . I fear for what might happen though and how this might influence nintnedo going forward. It will be a sad day when nintnedo eventually goes all digital

I don't think the switch 2 should be backwards compatible with switch games. Nintendo should release two digital versions of the switch 2 with different storage sizes.
People that want to play switch games should keep their original switch. People want to sell off their original switch console and turn a profit once they buy switch 2.
But they have to have a all digital version and a version that you can still use physical games with
