- Colin (Tim Roth, making his screen debut) and his brother Mark (Phil Daniels, who starred in Quadrophenia) are down and out. They live in a squalid flat with their unemployed father, Frank (Jeff Robert), and their put-upon mother, Mavis (Pam Ferris). They're on the dole, and Mark is constantly scrounging for cash and cadging drinks from his friends, among them Coxy (Gary Oldman in his screen debut), a skinhead.
It's very difficult to switch on the TV and watch contemporary entertainment after watching just ten minutes of this. Detailed and convincing and utterly magnetic.
So many gems here. Marion Bailey is magnificent and such a natural, understated performance from Pam Ferris as the downtrodden, accepting, Mavis
Just lovely to watch.
Phil Daniels is so underrated as an actor
This is one of my favorite films, so poinyant, it just works, this film is just so ......good
Leigh's finest - a work of unparalleled genius
I agree. 8 years later.
my fav film loved it
I watched this for Film Studies as a study of the Thatcher regime but I never thought I would have such a narrow escape from living like this. Don't ever grumble about your job if you have a steady one, because you should be glad it exists at all!
regime? she wasn't a dictator.
Tim Roth has had such an amazing career. From working class dramas like this to swashbuckling action in Rob Roy, to Tarantino. Such variety!
This is so depressing, but comforting in equal measure...brilliant piece or work!
Reminds you so much of growing up in Thatcherite Britain, very typical of the time.
Tim Roth gives one of his best performances in this film!
this film has everything you need asa human being, innocence, jelousey, survival.
Phil Daniels best role.
i love this film
this is masterpiece of UK films
all acters were splendid
comedy touch but absolutely realistic
Jeff Robert that plays Frank in this movie is brilliant. I remember this being on tv years ago and forgot how good the film and the quality of the acting really was. It's a real reminder of the thatcher years..
Watched this film when it first come out...love it.absolute genius work
Hainault forest, woodford bridge, chigwell station, fellows court bethnal green, Winston Churchill statute at woodford green. All places I know and love through growing up in east London and Essex. What a magnificent film, such a real view of those times and the people that lived in em...
A document of a period, an atmospher that is utter perfection - sheer poetry
i love when he says his address, first time i can actually hear him and the accent oh mannn so hot
Tim Roth, Gary Oldman and Phil Daniels always get mentioned, but this is also one of Pam Ferris's very first screen acting roles. She didn't do any more films for at least a decade until she played the scary-as-fuck Ms Trenchbull in Matilda. She's damn good. And horrid.
Me and my dear uncle "H" watched this so many times!!! Classic.
This is simple one of the most beautiful films that i've ever seen!!! I MEAN, I WATCHED CUZ OF TIM ROTH AND GARY OLDMAN, BUT I FELT IN LOVE WITH MIKE LEIGH TOO AFTER THIS! SUPERB!
It always amazes me how much taller Phil Daniels looks in this film compared to other performances
Doctor Octavius before his mechanical arms
"WASH IT" *SLAPS*
i love GARY OLDMAN AND TIM ROTH IN MEANTIME
What is the music he is listening to?
ive been trying to get this for ages i love it man cheers
Thats very true. He was actually 21 when he played the role. Made in Britain is a classic. Hes actually quite funny. 'Murder in the heartlands' has to be one of the best american accents by a British actor..
The ironic thing is that life in Aunt Barbara's affluent suburbs seems just as monotonous and empty as it does in the family's public housing.
Mike Leigh sometimes gives his actors destinations at a certain time/place. They might not know at which point they are being filmed. Wonder if he used that in this film?
I know, its bloody still like that now!
What that ? Its Mud. I can see its Mud!!!
whats the punk song phil plays about 6 minutes in?
At 6.06 you can see the skyscrapers in central London, nowadays the view would be a lot different.
my words exactly. Thanks so much!
@evanraufbold Made in Britain was not really a "screen" debut since it was made for TV but still fair point
this is a gritty drama
@000XxXMaisyXxX000
I remember seeing it in the TV times a couple of years ago.. not quite sure which channel, probably on Sky or cable
@chambersgirl92 Actually as a full time university student I don't pay tax on any work I do and currently I have no taxable income from anything else. Just means that I have to work my arse off for a job at the end of my degree so that I can pay back every penny of my student loan, probably with interest. I don't come from a well off family who can support me and I don't look down on anyone who hasn't gone the same road as I have and I'm not paying the new raised fees either as i started before,
I love the music in this film. Is it Andrew Dickson? Wish it was available somewhere.
Naked the Soundtrack composer Andrew Dickson it came. Out early this year .
Phil daniels has all the best lines in this film. If he wasn't in it , the film would be far too bleak.
@TashaDK That doesn't oblige you to repeat it! Both were made as single TV dramas (not movies) - making Roth's role as Trevor in 'Made In Britain' categorically his 'screen debut', on an equal footing, ahead of 'Meantime'. Both by directors of comparable artistic stature, too.
Some similar 'official' claims are outright lies. e.g. The publicity for 1981 Brit Oscar-winner Chariots of Fire claimed it was actor Ian Charleson's 'first film' when his real debut was Derek Jarman's 1978 Jubilee.
No I suppose not, but then I like dramas like this and other similar more recent stuff like This is England. It's not always interesting, and at times can be challenging viewing ... slow burning, poignant, bitter-sweet, but it's far better than most of the other shite out there.
lol he is totally different to his role as trevor
Dude, there's plenty of jobs and nobody can be assed goin for them, was in the paper a couple of weeks ago.
they race llamas now
AUNTIE BABARA! LOL
@TheGregski Doesnt make it an interestin watch though does it?
@NameNotaNumber haha what's up with that?
@MOONST0MP Their lives are fucking boring. Isn't that the whole point of the film?
@AshLuvsJonnyStew Amen to that :)
When I heard that Tim Roth , Phil Daniels and Gary Oldman where all in one film together I couldnt wait to see it. But then when I first saw it I was so disapointed in this film. Great actors but so boring!!
lol no she slaps him on the head
barbara just ooooozez sex!! and i want her badly!!
It is not his screen dubut. Get your facts straight!
The only thing poor is your taste I'm sorry to say.
I beg to differ. I can see (possibly )what the the writer/director was trying to do but he failed. Okay, the film is showing "real life" but films have to have a point to them, unfortunatly this doesnt. I should just have just gone to the job center and followed some wasters for the day, it would have been more entertaining than this film, no doubt.
This film is poor! Come on lets be honest! I bought this film after reading something telling me how good a film it was... I really shouldnt have. Poor story, if in fact there is one. Unrealistic characters eg, theatrical Coxy. Horrendous repetitive music. I just dont see any point in the film. I just hope Made in Britian is better!
as much as I agree with you, its pretty pointless replying to a comment from 7 years ago
whats the punk song phil plays about 6 minutes in?
Magazine?
