In this video I show you how I make cold process pink himalayan sea salt soap bars.
I love salt soap, they exfoliate nicely, are very hard right out of the mold and the lather is really awesome when the soap is made with coconut oil.
Because salt inhibits lather I used 100% coconut oil in this recipe. Coconut oil is the only oil that lathers well in the presence of salt.
Coconut oil can be drying to the skin so I used a 20% superfat. I also didn’t add any extra lye even if I added citric acid to this recipe. Instead I just let the superfat be a little higher. Read more about citric acid in soap making below.
I calculate my soap recipes with this lye calculator: soapee.com/calculator
    ○ Cold process himalayan sea salt soap recipe:
    400 g coconut oil (100%)
    58.6 g lye (33% lye concentration)
    117 g distilled water
200 g pink himalayan sea salt
    Optional:
    8 g citric acid
    1 tsp pink clay
    10 ml fragrance oil
Cure the soap for at least 4 weeks before using it on your skin.
    ○ Citric acid information
When citric acid and lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap.
A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water.
These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap.
A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases.
Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level.
How much citric acid should be added to soap?
Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight.
    How to use citric acid
Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye.

So, i tried many mixes and it's great (finally i put chamomile flowers from tea bag instead, it's a great scrub)!
(and soon I'll try poison ivy leaves loundry - cause i am financially ruined this end of month)
Do you have any advice on how to dry the soaps so that they don't turn into bad? Cause I've had some soaps that they have turned into like an old meal (green matter and even mini flies coming around)?
In my home it's vety dry or very wet, it's hard to balance the level of water in the air of the place..
Anyway thank you for all your ideas, it's so lovable❤️👍👌🙏

Hi, I've been watching your videos for months - many many times. The recepies are really working - Thanks a lot! This is the only recipe that didn't work.. Stiffened very very fast at the time I started to add himalayan salt (gradually) I couldn't find out the reason since I used a very sensitive calculator... Next hour, all batch was kind of Rock! :) then I grated the whole batch (it was sandy) then I made a cream by adding more coconut oil, apricot kernal oil and essential oils... Anyway, hope someone knows why I had this problem :) Cheers

    • @tellervo.
      @tellervo.  2 роки тому +7

Thank you, salt can definitely harden soap pretty fast! I wouldn't add it gradually, but all at once, stir quickly and pour it into a mold immediately. If you don't use individual molds you need to cut the soap within a few hours🙂

Gorgeous soap ❤ I made Himalayan salt soap but I would like to know if it is normal that it breaks into small chunks but not exactly at the end of the soap. I guess it is because of the thickness of the salt even when it's grinded before. Thank you your beautiful and inspiring videos ; from Chile , the thinest country at the South of the world.😊

Salt quantity is determined by the OIL weight. Some people do the salt at 50% of the total oils used, but others 100%, others very much less, 25%. And some people, just use salt water, brine, to make the Lye Solution. Lots of options, experimenting, and of course creativity for you. Have fun....

Can i add any other oils into this recipe?bcoz it will dry out the skin, right?if possible, how much should i add?

    • @tellervo.
      @tellervo.  2 роки тому

You can’t just add any oils and make changes to a soap recipe without adjusting the other ingredient amounts. If you want to make your own recipe, please use a lye calculator to figure out the amounts needed. This soap is made with 100% coconut oil because unlike other saponified oils, it lathers in the presence of salt. To counteract the cleansing effects of coconut oil, this recipe was formulated with 20% superfat.

@@tellervo. Thank you for your reply I did make the pink Himalayan soap and I just cut it this morning I really should’ve put it in a silicone mold like you did for separate bars because it was tough to cut which I kind of figured it would be. But you know I had a problem we’re all the salt settled to the bottom of the soap bar. I was worried about this when I poured it because I could kind of tell that was going to happen is there any way to prevent that or is that just the way the soap ends up being? I would really appreciate if you could get back with me on this one because I plan on making this soap again. Thanks in advance

The style of this video is so "Peaceful Cuisine's" style of shooting videos and a few other Cooking channels out of Asia that likely copied him as well.
The soap came out really nice but at the end of the day, we should heavily consider crediting other youtube channel's shooting style, if we're going to use it for our own channel and allow people to think we came up with it on our own. --If that applies to this channel. If not, then of course this can be simply ignored.

@@tellervo. mmmmmmm..... this is peaceful cuisine's style. And "doing what you love" doesn't have to involve his style without crediting it. When you don't credit it, you're claiming it. His style is very distinct and it's solely his signature. Anything else is a rip-off and again - should credit him as inspiration at the very least - to be fair. It's just respectful not taking it on as your own - or claiming this is your style from your own mind, by "taking full credit" for it in the comments--- when too many of us know - it's not. That is all.
BUT---- your soap's are wonderful and thank you for that- you are doing a fantastic job! - however on the former subject---whatever you do from here is your choice based on your character. Either way, at the end of the day - the cost of just ripping and copying so hard from others creative style makes everyone sound and look the same on youtube.
