    Jeremy Mims, conductor
Manuel de Sumaya (composer) was a native of the New Spain metropolis, a disciple of Antonio de Salazar and Joseph de Ydiaques. Currently, Sumaya represents the most eminent representation of Mexican baroque music from the first half of the 18th century.
Sumaya was chapel master of the cathedrals of Mexico and Oaxaca, and with him, according to testimonies that we currently have, the new tendencies of Italian concert music entered New Spain's cathedral music. His music is preserved in the archives of the cathedrals of Mexico, Oaxaca, Puebla, Morelia, Durango, Guatemala, and in the musical collection of the Museum of the Viceroyalty in Tepotzotlán.
The Missa a 8 de tercer tono (Missa de III tone for 8 voices) with violins by Manuel de Sumaya is one of the 3 Masses by this composer that has survived. It is considered his most festive and extensive mass. His 3 Masses belong to the musical archive of the Cathedral of Oaxaca and do not have a date of composition (except the Mass for 6 voices).
The Missa de III tone with violins, has a marked concert character, very typical of the time in which the composer lived, manifested in the alternation of choral parts and solo parts, with the participation of instruments. Although it bears the title Misa a 8, sometimes it has up to 9 voices, since the bass of the 1st choir, which ordinarily doubles the tenor, at times also functions as a real voice.

I would like to congratulate you on the choice of this composer who is still too little known. I myself played the mass for 5 voices (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) composed by Manuel de Sumaya. It was Sunday December 10, 2023 in Paris at the Saint-Eugène church on the occasion of the celebration of the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. A first in France! Congratulations again for your magnificent work. Listen => ua-cam.com/video/tjtpllI5EqU/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
