That transition to the chorus is epic. Catchy. Satisfying. It asks us to come back again and again. Then that gong is sublime. The little keyboard solo so nicely syncopated asks us for more. Yum.
As a side note, I believe Man/Adam was created in Africa and then placed East in Eden under the Fertile Crescent a type of Rainbow shape. Revelation 4 says there is a rainbow around Gods Throne. I have videos I teach on it. Genesis 2:8
This is a love song to the continent of Africa. The composer, David Paich, had never been there, but he saw a documentary about it that fascinated him. An all-time great pop song!
Yup, Toto is what happens when the GOAT of every instrument to make a band that happen to all be studio musicians at the very highest caliber come together just like when the planets align in the solar system once in a million years. How Toto formed and became this almost 50 years ago has never happened since to my knowledge. I enjoy every time I hear these great classic songs that were part of my much younger life. And now you sir take over the baton so to speak and run with it. Spread the word for the next generation.
'" Paich refined the lyrics for six months before showing the song to the rest of the band. In 2015, Paich explained that the song is about a man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance. He based the lyrics on a late night documentary with depictions of African plight and suffering.
One of the most amazing things about this song is that they didn't even expect it to be a hit, and it ended up being the biggest hit they've ever had! I did a cover of this on my UA-cam channel a few months ago, and it turned out pretty good. The synthesizer they use in this was so new at the time that only 3 people in the world knew how to program it. They just happened to know one of them.
The writer of this song was the student of a former missionary. Dude fell in love with one of the locals, forbidden. It was his job to teach that God brings the rain. Explained.
What impressed me about this song, is all of the precisely placed, intricate sounds. They were able to capture an African vibe while staying true to the rock music of the time. There was so much potential for the drums to be overdone in this song, but they refrained from doing so. Just perfect!
Enjoyed your reaction. I was 10 years-old when this song came out in September of 1982. I wasn't a fan of the song, then. But my older siblings and parents LOVED IT. It's now one of my favorites.
Let's Gooo! Such an amazing song. Check out Tragically Hip New Orleans is sinking studio version please 🙏. Merry Christmas to you and your family and Setonhill family 🎄🙏🎅
This exudes musical melodic genius absolutely love it…we will never hear such wonderful professional musicianship like this ever again. I grew up experiencing the best times for music and when I hear new stuff today it’s so bland and very disappointing.
I was eighteen when this song hit the Portuguese radio stations in 1982. It was such a massive hit that they had to play it three or four times every hour. The 80's were a very chaotic time for music (in a good way) mainly because there were so many new bands and music styles. That was what made that time so special and unforgettable. Merry Christmas to you, Steven and family, Setton Hill personnel included.
One of the most underrated bands of the 70's and 80's is Mother's Finest. A funky rock, anti-disco group from Atlanta, Ga. Check out "Baby Love" , Truth'll Set You Free", "Piece of the Rock", "Mickey's Monkey", "Thank You For The love" "Shut up"............
The initial idea and lyrics for the song came from David Paich was playing around with a new keyboard, the CS-80, and found the brassy sound that became the opening riff. He completed the melody and lyrics for the chorus in about ten minutes, much to Paich's surprise. "I sang the chorus out as you hear it. It was like God channeling it. I thought, 'I'm talented, but I'm not that talented. Something just happened here!'" Paich refined the lyrics for six months before showing the song to the rest of the band."
If you have access to HBO or the Max streaming service, I highly recommend the Yacht Rock documentary. It features Toto, The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan , and other groups and artists who would eventually get labeled as Yacht Rock.
I just heard recently about them being a studio band. They're on lots of albums of famous groups. I can't remember what they are now. But I think they only had by themselves three hits, but I could be wrong about that. I do know that the ones that I do know about are beautiful and I love them.
Toto is one of the best bands ever, Perfect musicians, try i will remember or the mindfields album, not porcaro on drums but u will flip out with the legendary substitute…
This and the other songs you mentioned (if I remember correctly) were all on the TOTO IV album. This is one of the few records I would listen to without skipping cuts. It is such a solid album. It was the only TOTO album I owned and it was very well worn before I bought a CD to replace it. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
my understanding is David paich was watching a national geographic documentary on africa which inspired the song. this whole album fire. steve lukather song afraid of love is a great hard rock song
This definitely is a great song, I think people will be humming it in another I don’t know how many years! If you would like to hear a different take on the song check out Frogleap Studios version, Leo Moraccioli is a very talented multi instrumentalist and singer, plus for this one he is joined by friends. The best one to watch if you’re interested is the Live from Wacken open air, it’s much more fun live - I’m not asking you for a reaction, if you see fit that’s up to you. I think you would really like his style!
i think you should do a "rock & roll" Christmas !! .... rock bands that had a Christmas song .... finish it with "John Lennon - happy X-mas / war is over"
@setonhillstudios drinking that THC drink called buzzn smoking a joint of London pound cake hour later last night Jenny Kush joint I did not feel pain in my feet and legs at all I also passed out by noon woke up like 8:30 at night and back to bed by 11:00 I was gone all night starting off smoking Jenny Kush then I'm going to drink a buzzing and I won't feel out today if I forget tomorrow I hope you have a very merry Christmas
A song that almost never made the album, and therefore might never have been heard. Just consider that when you remember that this was one of THE tunes of the 80s. Steve Lukather famously hated it and said he'd run down the street naked if it ever became a hit - something he never did, by the way. It is a masterpiece, and remember most of the band were only in their early to mid-twenties when they cut this and Rosanna. Treat yourself by listening to the band do this in Australia live and watch and listen to a mostly young crowd sing their hearts out to this: ua-cam.com/video/1iNWHNvuGVk/v-deo.html
Yep 1982! Such an amazing cut. Momma got a rule gonna do a cover do it justice or not at all. Lord luvs ducks, you gotta check out Frog leap studio's Leo does the most epic covers. A metal version. 60 million views. Make sure you listen to the outtro too as you get a extra little cut! Cheers Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 blessings in 25. "Music be the food of love play On!"
Heh.... EXTRA fun fact: Weird Al sang on a version of this song, and it's REALLY good! I love both versions basically equally! You, being a musician, might very well appreciate both versions, and comparing them!
@@setonhillstudios Yeah, it's wild, because we all know Al can sing his back end off when he wants to. He does a LOT of his own original music, but to do an actual cover with the original band (IIRC)... that's "new"!
So you like seeing masterpieces! I have one for you. It's a 1 hit wonder, first really long song, one of the first psychedelic songs written and has great organ and drum performances. The name of the song was originally "In The Garden Of Eden" but the singer screwed it up and it came out "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (1968) by Iron Butterfly ua-cam.com/video/An0o46MAzm4/v-deo.html
Such a great tune, but believe it or not Steve Lukathor did not like it. Another amazing Toto tune is "I'll be over you" with Steve on lead vocals. Merry Christmas my Kentucky brother!

Is this one of the greatest songs of all time?!!
There is a fantastic live performance when they are a bit older. And they still rock it
🇨🇦 Imagine the talent required to put together a line in a song like "sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti" ! 🇨🇦
That transition to the chorus is epic. Catchy. Satisfying. It asks us to come back again and again. Then that gong is sublime. The little keyboard solo so nicely syncopated asks us for more. Yum.
Toto doesn't miss!! 🔥
“Hold the Line” is a MUST watch by Toto, in will blow your mind!
It’s on the channel!! 🔥🔥
From the first note it takes me to that “place”. It never gets old. That Gong is a sweet touch most probably wouldn’t have thought of. Great tune.
As a side note, I believe Man/Adam was created in Africa and then placed East in Eden under the Fertile Crescent a type of Rainbow shape. Revelation 4 says there is a rainbow around Gods Throne. I have videos I teach on it. Genesis 2:8
Porcaro magic🎉
This is a love song to the continent of Africa. The composer, David Paich, had never been there, but he saw a documentary about it that fascinated him. An all-time great pop song!
The three Porcaro brothers: Steve on keyboard, Mike on bass, and Jeff on drums. RIP Jeff and Mike.
Jeff was a legend
Bassist on Toto IV was David Hungate. Mike Porcaro didn't join the band until later.

“Hold The Line” is on the channel! You must have missed it! Such a great tune! 🎶
You MUST see the same song but live . Absolute insane at the end a real must see . With a base solo and the crowd follow them .
The writer of this song was the student of a former missionary. Dude fell in love with one of the locals, forbidden. It was his job to teach that God brings the rain. Explained.
It seems it's two sounds programmed to play together at the same time on the keyboard.
... now it's time to check out their hit "99" ... one of my favorites from Toto!!!
"99" is a low-key masterpiece!
A MUST SEE/HEAR cover,, Angel City Chorale "Africa"..An incredible performance. ❤

Yesss!! Great insight! 👍🏻
I heard this song in a local patio bar in Mombasa Kenya drinking Elephant Beer in the 1980's. It just seemed appropriate.
Patty-I love this song. This has always been my favorite Toto song.
The lyrics themselves are a masterpiece.
One of my all-time favorites!!
A hit the instant it starts
