    I think it depends on the rock and also whether you want them completely smooth. I get much more pleasure from using nail polish than a rock tumbler. I like the unevenness. However, some rocks are so weathered, that tumbling enhances them in a way, painting them can't. I do not understand the crowd that dismisses painting outright. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Painting also allows people with limited space, income, to enjoy their collections more. I am glad you posted this. When I run out of my current supply of nail polish, I will try it. I use nail polish exclusively on what I call my "littles." Rocks that are tiny versions of bigger rocks, I have found. When I have to downsize, in my old age, I hope to take my "littles" with me.

      HOWDY, Diann! 👋🏼 OMG, I literally made a video TODAY on using nail polish that I'll post next weekend. Everything you said is EXACTLY why nail polish IS a perfectly valid option for polishing rocks instead of all the hassles that come with tumbling. Wow, it's like you had a camera over my head today!! I love your positive outlook, and "littles" is so cute and accurate. Let me know if you try the Rust-Oleum spray method and what you think. ROCK ON!! 😃👍🏻🪨⛏️

    I prefer the tumbler polished rocks better overall. But, if it's a small stone that you like the appearance of and know it will tumble into nothing in the end, a good coat of spray on gloss appears to be a great alternative! Great idea, thanks for sharing! Thanks for the video! Eric 👍

    • @CacklingChick
      @CacklingChick  2 місяці тому +2

      Howdy, Eric! 👋🏻 I agree with you that each polish type is subjective and/or dependent on how small or fragile a rock is in terms of surviving all tumbling stages to look worth a darn. It's definitely great to have options! I appreciate your watching and feedback. Do you tumble very often? TUMBLE ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨💦

    For more delicate rocks, I keep a container of them with my acrylic pours and use any leftover acrylic to coat them. They are shiny and safe from the ravages of the tumbler.

    Great results in this experiment. The best part of it, that the colors are staying under the coat as if rocks would be wet. I did Rust-Oleum on shells, and then capture them in seed beads, and made a set of earrings and a bracelet. Looking great. The only thing I would prefer the tumbler over the spray is that if rock will be in constant touch by hand, then the coat will run off eventually, and another part of discomfort - scratches on the surface of polish spray. Has to be handle careful, otherwise it would lose the decorative look. For shells spray works great as they could not be treated in tumbler, still careful handling required.

      @CacklingChick 2 part epoxy can have an odor issue. The brand I use is very low odor and a surgical mask and nitrile glove is all I need. Deep pour resins (river tables/counter tops) do require a respirator. However, I primarily only use UV resin since I concentrate on jewelry pieces. Nitrile gloves for working and a well ventilated area for curing with a UV lamp. I have multiple lamps, so I can work on several pieces a day. I DO wear a painters mask for sanding and buffing. But, one would do that anyway.

    After they dry is it tacky? How long does the shine stay for?

    • @CacklingChick
      @CacklingChick  2 місяці тому +2

      Howdy! 👋🏼 Once completely dry, they're not sticky. The shine is permanent unless subjected to harsh treatment, such as prolonged exposure to the elements or other harsh circumstances, but don't quote me on that. The rocks I coated in this video are in a display tray on my coffee table and look exactly the same. I will be doing a 1-year follow-up video to report on how they're holding up. I suggest trying the spray on a couple of them before committing to spraying them all. Then you can decide if you truly like how they turn out. Plus, you can get familiar with getting the edges for an even coat and no dripping, etc. I hope that makes sense. I'd love to hear how they turn out or post a pic on my subreddit group: www.reddit.com/r/CacklingChick/s/5MQ4MuPI35. No pressure!! Good luck!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
