It was such a powerful image and sound for me as a young kid when my parents watched the news. Michael Burke was usually the presenter and he was incredibly authoritative and direct. You really couldn't help but pay attention and take the news seriously. Now though it's all garish colours and rave music lol.
This was epic . Martin's graphics with George Fenton's best version of his theme. I did my work experience at TVC in November 1988 and watched the news going out live a couple of times from the gallery and the adrenalin rush as the transmission countdown kicked in and real 80s news headlines got announced over the bed then the main theme kicked in and you're sat above the newsreaders reading rheir Autocue :)
I remember this BBC news theme really good and my sister was only a baby and she was petrified of this theme and she used to scream and cry that the television is going to blow up every time this news theme came on at 9.00pm and we all used to laugh at her and say don't worry about it it's on the television so calm down and chill out then she would stop crying but it was really funny.
The George Fenton themes are excellent, the David Lowe ones just seem like a set of beeps and beats. I can’t get over the David Lowe themes being used for 22 years now, at the start I envisaged them only being used for a short while (wishful thinking)
Can’t we like both Lowe and Fenton? I know Fenton was great and all, but the current theme is more than just a series of beeps. They were inspired by the Greenwich Time Signal, a historic sounder for the BBC.
There's an old documentary on UA-cam of how the BBC first started broadcasting from Alexandra Palace with a huge transmitter on the roof back in the 1930s. The Metropolis-style graphics shown here aren't far off the hands-on electrical engineering involved in those very early broadcasts.
The music wasn't changed at all for the run when they used this title sequence which was from October 31st 1988 until April 12th 1993 - then the following day they launched their brand new computer generated news studio and titles, which then they did introduce a new orchestral and over the top version of this original theme tune.
I believe, it was multiple layers of conventionally animated b&w mattes, that where then layered and coloured and textured in Quantel Harry and Paintbox.
One of the most majestic and riveting news opens i've ever seen, and I'm from the United States.
Do you know doors can be used to exit the house?

3 years ago...but if you haven't, try the 1993 nine o clock theme, which is this but slightly modified and actually even better.
What an intro - still sends shivers down my spine hearing it today. Bring it back!
Unlike the lame duck tune they have now. Well... its not even a tune just a few dull repeated same notes.
Iconic piece of news music ever
It still wouldn't look out of date today.

This intro is absolutely timeless. Love it!
The most bizarre, but also the coolest news intro I've ever seen.
It's a nod to the transmitter/lightning bolt that the lion holds on the BBC Coat of Arms.
An amazing piece. It exudes confidence, robustness and certainty.
As did presenters such as Peter Sissons and Michael Burke.
Nice to finally see this intro in a good quality
This is the most 50s and at the same time 80s thing I ever saw.
This is the best of all the pre-David Lowe BBC News themes
In other words, the best BBC News theme
best piece of news music ever wrote
Ah yes! The iconic Tower of Power!
0:11 🎵The nine o'clock NEWSSSS!! BBC~!!!!!🎵🎵
Of course this had to be from the late, great Martin Lambie-Nairn. Because it looked SO damn good! 👍💯🌟

Haha I was at primary school/early secondary school when this was used, so probably of a similar age to you
That music scared the crap out of me as a kid
The best o'clock news intro.
Lovely nod to the 1950s.
That theme really meant ‘sit up and watch’ back in the day
With Music Composed and Conducted by George Fenton, Who (unlike David Lowe) was an Academy Award Nominee.

Thank you i would have never thought of that , how the hell did you know that ????
Now it's been 35 years since it's debut

Magnificent

0:06 Epic I - HAVE - THE POWER!!!
This music was changed slightly in 1993 or something but sounds very similar

@@johnking5174 that was what i meant
I remember this so well as a kid shame the news intros are not as good any more.
Thanks for posting. By any chance do you have a recording of the music that led into this intro?
Used to scare the shit out of me as a kid!

I wonder if the graphics subtly imply the Union Jack??
It was supposed to represent a transmitter, however as soon as it launched in 1988 viewers complained that it sort of looked like a Nazi symbol
@@johnking5174 There is definitely a 1984/British Union of Fascists logo feel to it, but it's pretty cool regardless
How did Lambie-Nairn make this?
I believe, it was multiple layers of conventionally animated b&w mattes, that where then layered and coloured and textured in Quantel Harry and Paintbox.
That seems nice.
@@themartinlambie-nairncolle6632 I'm in a server with Quantel experts on Discord!

Mmm, fascism
Is what you think it is.
I get it because the lightnings resemble the "sieg runes" used by the Schutzstaffel, Nazi party's armed wing.
@@ryanramos1935 Or Lightning. Stylized lightning. Not everything with jagged edges is equivalent to NAZISM.
@@nottimhortons Because that's what it is
@@GryphLane Actually, I think this is partially insured by the coat of arms, and how the crest lion is holding a lightning encircled scepter.
