Can you use an eGPU with the Mac? To render with a 1080 ti?

If I'm using a Mac and am stuck with CPU rendering, what would be good enough? 6-core 3.5? 8-cor?... Thanks!

The more the better, but 4-6 is usually fine unless you are doing some seriously heavy scenes with lots of reflection/refraction.
